4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds Tony Bradnum, our precious dad, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning 3 September 2014. Our minds can't settle on the fact that he is no longer with us. And our hearts can't cope with having lost both parents within 13 months. We have so many wonderful memories of a man who always loomed large in our - and our children's - lives. He held the floor, he told stories and jokes, he was kind and generous and loving. Heaven has gained a big man, and we have lost a legend. Friends, please join us on Wednesday 10 September at 3pm at Stella's home for a service to honour the life of our wonderful dad. Alan & Paul Bradnum, Stella Allberry, Ruth Martin and families. THOMPSON - DAVE It is with great sadness that we learnt of Dave's passing on 29 August 2014 after a long struggle with his health which was bravely borne. Dave spent many years at Plumtree where he was well respected by all who had the good fortune to come into contact with him. He was a great teacher and contributed immensely to Plumtree's well being. In an address to the Old Prunitians in Harare recently Mike Mountain mentioned that "An account of Plumtree staff would not be complete without Dave Thompson, larger that life and cheeky to boot!" 7) Bulawayo News Bulawayo Publicity Association It is pleasing to hear from tourists coming into our offices that several travel guides have recommended the Bulawayo Publicity Association for its good information and helpfulness. Your subscriptions therefore dear member, are being put to good use in promoting Bulawayo's image. August was a busy month tourist-wise with family groups coming into the office for information and tourists travelling through Africa on overland tours. Many of the family units were campers staying at the Matopos. New members in August were Dickie's Restaurant, Bulawayo Club and Montgomery Gardens Lodge. This Lodge is situated 7kms from the city centre in Richmond on the Victoria Falls Road. It has 30 rooms, a swimming pool; Wi-Fi and conference centre and is popular for weddings. As you might know, the Bulawayo Club has now reverted to the members The Bulawayo Public Library received a large donation of books from Rotary Clubs in United States of America, some of which have been sent to the Ascot Library. The Librarian had to choose from the 20 000 books sent to the Rotary contact in Johannesburg and grateful thanks must go to the donors who made Miss Ndlovu's transport to Johannesburg and return possible as well as the transport of the books to Bulawayo. The Ascot Library now has a very good selection of books so you are invited to browse around and become members. Zimplats also donated a large selection of text books to the Public Library. The Library is also extremely grateful to Pocock Estate Agents (Mr Friend) for their helpfulness and patience with regard to the arrears in the payment of rent for the Ascot Library. WASHen 2014: The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Company has launched a water, sanitation, hygiene and energy expo, WASHen that will run from 25-26 September 2014. The theme of the sectors-specific exhibition is 'Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development'. The objective of the event is to provide a platform where water sanitation and energy issues can be showcased and discussed by individuals, organizations and specialists in these sectors. 9) Harare And Gweru News PRESS RELEASE: TRADITONAL & ORGANIC FOOD FESTIVAL 2014 The second edition of the Traditional & Organic Food Festival will be held on 27 and 28 September this year, from 9 am to 4 pm at the National Botanic Gardens in Harare. This follows the successful launch of the event at the same venue in December 2013. Last year's inaugural festival drew an encouraging number of people. It was planned as a celebration of natural and healthy eating. This year the intention is still the same: to promote the production and consumption of traditional and organic foods which are now internationally regarded as the healthier options. Several groups have collaborated in setting up both editions of the event. These organisations include ZAVSAP (Zimbabwe Adding Value to Sustainable Agriculture Produce), CADS (Cluster Agricultural Development Services), ZOPPA (Zimbabwe Organic Producers and Promoters Association), ZIMSOFF (Zimbabwe Small-Scale Organic Farmers Forum), STEP (Sustainable Tourism Enterprises Promotion), BIZ (Bio-Innovation in Zimbabwe), FoodMattersZimbabwe and representatives from various government ministries, in particular: the Ministries of Health and Child Welfare; Agriculture and Mechanisation, Industry and Commerce; and Women's Affairs. There has also been support from the Food and Nutrition Council as well as the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. The overall aim is to encourage producers and consumers, who some call co-producers because of their potential to influence how production happens, towards food systems that produce, process and market healthy and nutritious foods in a sustainable way. Nearly 40 stallholders will display a variety of food and drink, both for buying and, in some cases, for tasting. Information will be provided as well. There will be stalls run by small-scale organic farmers and food businesses, government ministries, NGOs; among others. Farmers will be coming from different parts of the country. Pop-up restaurants will be selling lunch, snacks and drinks that are in line with the theme of the festival. A diversity of traditional, nutritious foods from Zimbabwe and other countries will be available. Entertainment will be provided by local artistes: Sniper Storm, Edith weUtonga, Vera, BaShupi, Steve Chikotie, Zim Jam Signal and the Kubatana Unite Marimba Ensemble are in the line-up. There will also be cooking and other food processing demonstrations. Carl Joshua Ncube will be showcasing his culinary skills. An exciting programme of activities has been planned for primary school age children in the KidsZone. They will be able to do colouring, mask-making, and create objects from recycled materials. They will also be introduced to traditional dance and the playing of traditional musical instruments. Mindful that habits start early in life, the children will get an opportunity to learn about healthy foods and lifestyles. The SPCA will arrange donkey cart rides and a pen of farm animals; as well as a short talk about them. A reduced entry fee into the National Botanic Gardens has been negotiated for the Traditional & Organic Food Festival. Children under the age of 12 will enter for US$ 0.50 and everyone else will be charged US$1.
