BULAWAYO city is set to celebrate 120 years of existence in June this year. On the 1st of June 2014, Bulawayo will celebrate 120 years of existence after the city attained town status and had its advisory board set up in 1894. The City Fathers are delighted that the city had grown from humble beginnings as the Royal Kraal of King Lobengula to a metropolitan city. 'This is a milestone in our history and we are delighted to be able to celebrate our achievements. Bulawayo has grown from the royal kraal of King Lobengula to a metropolitan city,' said the city's Acting Mayor. As the city celebrates 120 years of growth, my council and I take great pleasure in being part of Bulawayo's celebration of its past, present and future.'A progressive city and a force to reckon with.' Bulawayo held its centenary celebrations in 1994. As part of the commemorations to mark Bulawayo's 120 years of existence historian Pathisa Nyathi hopes to bring us snippets from life in the city in the days gone by. The focus though will be on the African townships and the experiences of their inhabitants. There are several people alive today who experienced life in those early days. 'We shall seek interviews with such people so that they share their experiences with those of us who were not privy to the goings on in Bulawayo during those eventful days', said Pathisa. Here we are thinking of themes such as recreation and entertainment, sport, in particular Highlanders Football Club, education, health, spirituality/religion, trade unionism, nationalist politics and white reaction to the same, urban guerrilla operations, industries and many others. King Lobengula's capital was KoBulawayo. The first settlement which served as King Lobengula's capital was KoBulawayo (now being referred to as Old Bulawayo) located near a long snaking hill called eNyokeni. It was not far from Hope Fountain. The establishment of a new capital was in line with Ndebele traditions. A new king did not occupy the same settlement where his father lived. It was believed the protective charms used to fortify the settlement would weigh heavily on the new monarch, with disastrous consequences on his person. The initial stages in the establishment of a new site were fortification of both the new king and his capital town. Accordingly, King Lobengula underwent a period of seclusion during which he was being fortified and counselled in the intricacies and etiquette of ruling and leading his father's people. That initial stage saw the king living with a limited number of people. Only when the counselling, fortification and construction of the new settlement were done with, did other people join the royal household within the Royal Enclosure and the Peripheral Enclosure. The royal settlement had to be protected, both physically and metaphysically. The Royal Enclosure had a double-walled stockade made from mopane logs fetched a long distance from the site. The Peripheral Enclosure extended right around the Royal Enclosure where the King and his household lived. Within the Royal Enclosure there were royal queens, sons and daughters of the king. There was also the senior induna, Magwegwe Fuyana and some helpers within the Royal Palace, notably Sihuluhulu Mabhena and Sivalo Mahlangu, the son of Mveleleni. There were other personal attendants of the king such as the doctors, praise singers and several others. The Peripheral Enclosure completely surrounded the Royal Enclosure. The entire area was within two stockades. This was the first frontline in the physical protection of the king. Further out there was a circle of villages that constituted isiphika, the hood. In dress terms the hood is worn over the shoulders or around the neck. More importantly, it surrounds the head, here symbolising the capital town. In addition an historic exhibition commemorating the 120th anniversary of the city of Bulawayo opened at the National History Museum in Bulawayo on Thursday. This is one of the many activities lined up by the city to celebrate the historic milestone. The opening of the exhibition titled, 'Bulawayo at 120 years' coincided with the Museum Golden Jubilee celebrations. Bulawayo's history and its growth into a great industrial centre and one of the country's main tourist attractions shows the residents' desire and commitment to growth and development. This historic display therefore takes pride in the various milestones of Bulawayo as we trace down the city's timeline. The past 120 years have been full of adventure and events which have contributed to the present day Bulawayo. It has been marked by certain landmarks which also include the natural history museum which coincidentally celebrates its 50th anniversary in existence in Bulawayo.' The exhibition runs until the end of the year. The executive director of National Museums and Monuments, Dr Godfrey Mahachi, in his speech marking the 50th anniversary of the museum, chronicled its history since it was first mooted in 1901. 'In 1901 when Cecil John Rhodes visited Bulawayo for the last time he received two requests, the first from the Chamber of Mines to appoint a geologist and the second from the Rhodesia Scientific Board who wanted a museum to house their growing collection minerals. On 1st of January 1902 the Rhodesia Museum came into being,' said Dr Mahachi. On 20 March 1964, fifty years ago, the Natural History Museum officially opened its doors to the public but completion of new public and individual displayed has continued up to the present time. It is an impressive circular building, and with its stunning displays and value bale research collections it is the best museum in Southern Africa. +++++++ 2) Notices and Events SPECIAL CHARTER STEAM TRAIN TO CELEBRATE THE 12OTH ANNIVERSARY OF BULAWAYO Bulawayo City Council in conjunction with NRZ are organising a special steam train to Figtree and return..this will be on SUNDAY, JUNE 1st. Distemper is a very contagious disease of dogs. Outbreaks are uncommon nowadays thanks to mass vaccination, but individual dogs and kennels do succumb to this distressing and often fatal disease. Causes Distemper is a disease caused by the canine distemper virus. It affects dogs primarily, but in Europe other animals, such as foxes and ferrets can be affected. The virus is closely related to the measles virus. It is primarily spread by contact with affected dogs. The virus is present in eye and nasal discharges that readily form aerosol droplets. Infected dogs may shed the virus for several months. Although the virus is relatively unstable outside the dog, it can be carried on the clothing and subsequently infect any unprotected dogs. Spread is very rapid in any group of dogs, especially in kennels and at dog shows, hence the necessity to vaccinate dogs. Like canine viral hepatitis, introduction of an infected puppy is the commonest source of an outbreak. Puppies from an unvaccinated mother, unvaccinated dogs and the immunosuppressed are most at risk. The infection begins by attacking the respiratory system, but in time many organs may become infected, including the brain. Symptoms In the days following infection, the first sign will be a fever which may only last a few days. This is then followed by a second fever which lasts longer and is accompanied by other signs. Minor form Many dogs will have partial immunity, either from their mother, or from a lapsed booster. They might only show slight malaise, perhaps with runny eyes and nose and a cough. It is these dogs that are most likely to spread the full disease to unprotected dogs in the community. Various forms of the disease exist: Respiratory form: Which is characterised by difficulty in breathing, nasal discharge, sneezing and coughing. Secondary bacterial infection is possible. Digestive form: With vomiting and diarrhoea. Cutaneous form: A dermatitis with a thickening of the skin on the nose and pads (hence the old name of 'hardpad'). This form may be associated with nervous signs. Nervous form: Fits or gradual twitching of the muscles and paralysis of the limbs ('chorea') can be seen. This may be coupled with a characteristic half-cough caused by nerve damage. In this form, the initial disease has often passed unnoticed. Ocular form: Signs of conjunctivitis (runny eyes) and other less obvious ocular changes. Diagnosis Clinical diagnosis Although Canine Distemper is difficult to diagnose definitively, a presumptive diagnosis can usually be made using a combination of clinical signs and some diagnostic tests. Diagnostic tests Certain samples from the dog, including blood tests, spinal fluid, secretions from the nose or tissue samples can be taken to help with diagnosis. However, there is no test that is fully reliable, and absolute confirmation may be impossible. Treatment The causative virus cannot be treated. Any secondary bacterial infections can usually be treated and supportive treatment will also be necessary. Treatment could therefore include: Antibiotic treatment to control any bacterial infections, if present. Medication to control symptoms, such as diarrhoea, vomiting, coughing and fits. Nursing care to remove soiling, eye/nose discharges etc. Support to encourage eating and drinking. Anti-inflammatories Infected and in-contact dogs MUST be isolated from other susceptible dogs and strict hygiene precautions are needed to prevent spread (change of clothing/disinfectants).Unfortunately treatment is not always successful, and the prognosis is especially poor for dogs that show neurological signs. Prevention Prevention is by vaccination. The distemper component should always be included in the primary vaccination course given to puppies, and is often included in routine booster vaccinations. Based on your pet's specific situation, your veterinary surgeon will decide the best vaccination protocol to meet your pet's needs. An up-to-date vaccination is obligatory before going into kennels. In the event of an outbreak of disease, strict isolation and hygiene precautions must be instituted. ++++ 7) Bulawayo News CAN YOU HELP Barbara Viljoen is in DESPERATE need of double - boilers to cook her famous LEMON CURD ! "In June, 1972, one of the greatest natural disasters to hit the country took place, when an underground explosion occurred in Wankie No.2 Colliery. Four hundred and twenty-six miners lost their lives - thirty six Europeans and three hundred and ninety Africans. Apart from the one hundred and seventy-six Rhodesians who died, there were ninety-one Zambians, fifty-two from Mozambique, thirty-seven from Malawi, thirty Tanzanians, fourteen Britons, twelve South Africans, nine from South West Africa, four from the Caprivi Strip, and one from Botswana. The disaster provoked reaction throughout the world, and messages of sympathy poured in from all quarters, and included those from Queen Elizabeth, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the British Foreign Secretary, the Pope, and the Prime Minister of South Africa, Mr. B. J. Vorster. I visited the colliery the following day, and I think this was one of the most depressing and indeed most distressing days I have ever spent in my life. The wives of the African miners were wailing. Most of the European relatives were in a severe state of shock, and one felt completely helpless at not 'being able to do anything to relieve their distress' The whole country was stunned by this disaster, and with the well-known generosity of Rhodesians, various organisations as well as individuals immediately set up funds for the relief of those who had been affected by the disaster. It soon became apparent, however, that if several separate funds were organised, the overall administration of these would inevitably present a lot of difficulties. I therefore got in touch with all those who were contemplating such a course, as well as those who had already advertised, and suggested that they should be amalgamated into one individual fund. This was readily agreed to and as a result the Wankie Disaster Fund came into being. The response from all sections of the Rhodesian community was instantaneous and overwhelming. Contributions varying from small silver coins donated by Africans to large sums given by commercial firms and organisations were received, and within a very short space of time, contributions from within the country and indeed from various sources overseas, pushed the fund to over $400 000. The main object was, of course, to provide for the welfare of all of the surviving dependants, so that they would be able to maintain the same standard of living to which they had been accustomed. Quite apart from fairly large grants which were made to cover immediate and pressing cash requirements, a system was evolved whereby monthly sums would be paid to the dependants for food, education and other essentials. In view of the fact that so many of the African victims came from outside our borders, a great deal of trouble was experienced in tracing relatives, and eventually a special representative was employed to travel around the country to endeavour to locate those who had either returned to their Reserves, or were being looked after by their own families. He succeeded in tracing no less than one hundred and eighty, but even so he was considerably restricted in his efforts as a result of the disturbed conditions in many parts of Rhodesia due to terrorist activity. It is interesting to note that by the middle of 1978, no less than $333 000 had been paid out from the fund, and today it still stands in an extremely healthy position. No less than six hundred and fifty widows and children receive support, and this does not take into account those previously mentioned who are living in sensitive areas where they cannot be contacted. She later went to undertake interdisciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore. In 1982, she formed the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology. This led to the creation, in 1993, of Navdanya, a network to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources (biodiversity), especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. Dr Shiva is very concerned about the effect of genetically engineered (GE) organisms on the environment, food sovereignty and the rights of farmers. She is the author of thirteen books and over 300 articles and has been presented with numerous awards, among which are: the Right Livelihood (1993), the Order of the Golden Ark (1993), the Save the World Award (2009), the Sydney Peace Prize (2010) and Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2012). During her visit to Zimbabwe, Dr Shiva will share her ideas and experiences with people from all sectors of society, including key decision-makers, smallholder farmer organizations and the media. She will address a public meeting on Saturday 7 June at 2 pm at Book Cafe.
