7) Bulawayo News Bulawayo Publicity Association Dear Member The major fun event this month is Valentine's Day with entertainment being laid on by various clubs. The National Railways of Zimbabwe will be running two steam train tours - one on the 16th February from Bulawayo to Figtree and the other from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls on the 13th February. Jazz Invitation will celebrate St Valentine's Day with a Jazz evening at the Groove Club at the Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel Antelope Game Park is offering a Valentine's weekend with a special Valentine's dinner on the 14th February on the banks of the Vungu River and a bush finger lunch in the game park the following day. The main business event is the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce Matabeleland Chapter's International Trade and Investment Conference to be held at Zimbabwe International Trade Fair on 12th and 13th February. The Ascot Shopping Complex is being repainted in bright colors and looks most attractive and clean. Amongst the shops there are a chemist, bookshop with good selection of children's educational books, an Italian restaurant, butcher shop, dress shop and a shop selling a range of nightwear and underwear, as well as TM Supermarket. Mary's Restaurant opposite the Medical Centre has been painted a happy sunshine yellow inside and outside. The Bulawayo Club is no longer a boutique Hotel run by the Amalinda Collection Group but has reverted to being a members club. It is being repainted and refurbished and should be open by April. The Youth Hostel opposite Old Miltonians Club has sadly had to close its doors due to financial constraints and is now being run as a pre-school. Solomon's Supermarket in Fife Street is just one of the supermarkets that has been taken over by the Choppies Group, which has also taken over various Spars owned by Mr R Modi. Main Street, as you probably all know by now, has been renamed JMN Nkomo Street where his statue proudly stands. Jeys Marabini Ndlovu, a leading guitarist in the Jazz African music world, will be giving a concert at the Indaba Book Cafe, Corner J Tongogara Street/9th Avenue on Saturday 8th February, starting at 6p.m. The evening will include a three course meal. Congratulations to Krishna Travel & Tours in 55 Robert Mugabe Way which, through its owner Dipti Mahdoo, has recently been awarded the Amadeus Legend Award. Amadeus is a technology company dedicated to the global travel industry. It provides the technology which keeps the travel sector moving. The Bulawayo Motoring Club's season will start with a drag race on February 22nd at the motor racing circuit on the Falls Road. STATEMENT FROM ZIMRA - please note Goods that are excluded from the Travellers' Rebate Following the announcement of the 2014 National Budget by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Economic Development, changes have been made to the rebate of duty on travellers' effects covered under Section 114 of the Customs and Excise (General) Regulations, published in Statutory Instrument 154 of 2001 through Statutory Instrument 169 of 2013. The duty free allowance of US$300 per person granted on goods imported by travellers for their personal use no longer includes cooking oil and laundry bar soap. The list of goods that are excluded is now as follows: goods which are incorrectly declared; goods which are imported for commercial purposes; alcoholic beverages in excess of five litres per traveller of which two litres may be spirits: goods which are imported by any member of the crew of an aircraft, ship or vehicle arriving from outside Zimbabwe; stoves; refrigerators; blankets; cooking oil; and Laundry bar soap. This implies that the importation of such goods will attract duty despite the fact that the value might be under the duty free allowance of US$300. Please take note of this latest development in order to avoid any inconveniences at ports of entry. MANDARIN CHINESE FOR BEGINNERS National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is offering a BEGINNERSi COURSE IN MANDARIN CHINESE. This course is designed as an interactive workshop to teach basic Mandarin listening, speaking, reading and writing skills tailored to the needs of professionals and future professionals. Its focus is on learning to communicate in a variety of everyday situations. The course will be taught by Sara Van Hoeymissen (PhD in Chinese Studies, University of Leuven, Belgium). Sara studied Chinese intensively for five years and has been using the language professionally for over ten years. She is an experienced language instructor who takes a learner-centred and results-oriented approach to teaching. Lessons will start on Saturday 1 March 2014. The course will run for 8 weeks from 9:00 to 12:00. The registration fee for this course is US$ 125. Fees include tuition, refreshments, teaching materials and participation in the final test. No prior knowledge of Chinese language or Chinese culture is required. A Certificate of Successful Completion will be issued to candidates who pass the final test.
