Dave on 23O899 or Maggi on 242235 World Rhino Day: an Update from Dambari Wildlife Trust World Rhino Day, 22 September, is on our doorstep and this year Zimbabwe looks set to mark this important day in style. In fact it should be called World Rhino Month as so many events are planned throughout September to celebrate the rhino and its importance to our country. The National Rhino Day parade will this year be held in Bulawayo, on Saturday 21 September, after being showcased for the last two years in Harare. The parade promises to provide an entertaining morning in the city with Twalumba (the life size rhino made from tin cans) leading the procession from town to Centenary Park where there will be singing, dancing, art displays and speeches from the Minister of Environment, Director of National Parks and local dignitaries. The parade will raise awareness of the plight of Zimbabwe's rhinos and reach many people who may not otherwise hear about rhino - a unique endangered species whose importance has been recognised both internationally and nationally, where it is a special part of our natural heritage and a popular tourist attraction. Dambari Wildlife Trust is holding its second annual Rhino Day golf competition on Saturday 21st September at Bulawayo Golf Club. This year there will be a floating trophy in addition to the usual prizes and raffle. There will be some quirky approaches to the holes that will test the skill of the golfers. All proceeds will go to the work the Trust is doing for wildlife in the Matopos Hills. Further information is posted on our Facebook page and in this edition of Morning Mirror. Matopos Rhino Initiative Trust is, on Sunday 22 September, holding a fundraiser at the Sandy Spruit entrance to the Matopos National Park. There will be fun runs and rides as well as a spit roast. The Trust is aiming to raise funds for another 10 km of fencing for the Matopos Rhino Intensive Protection Zone which will clearly demarcate the area and assist Parks in protecting the rhino. Companies who sponsor a kilometre have the option to advertise their name and logo along the fence. The Midwest Rhinos Cricket team will, on the 28th and 29th, be holding their annual Wicked Cricket tournament in Kwekwe. The Rhinos, Kwekwe Sports Club and the Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy work together to raise local awareness of rhino issues through sports events. Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in conjunction with Mukuvisi Woodlands, other wildlife NGOs and the Lowveld Conservancies are also planning World Rhino Day activities to mark the day in and around Harare, Masvingo and Chiredzi.
