"Ok so I know this is really an odd question but does anyone out there have any contacts in Zimbabwe that could help us with a donation of Oxtail. For the past 2 years we in conjunction with the Verity Amm Soup Kitchen in Bulawayo have held a Mothers/Father's day celebration in June for approximately 100 pensioners. However Montana Meats is unable to assist us this year and we are getting really desperate. Our normal donor for the short rib is still able to help us. We are talking about 20-25kg. Even if different people are able to help with small amounts to help us get the total required. Please this is a real treat for our Golden Oldies and is one of the few really special things we can do. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I can be contacted on pensupzim@vodamail.co.za or +27 796082676." 8) Bulawayo News Wankie Colliery Mine Disaster Memories from Wankie folk of that tragic and traumatic day 6th June 1972 A few years ago I created a Group on Face Book called 'Wankie Rhodesia - 6th June 1972' and invited folk to write about their thoughts and memories of that tragic day. Here below are some of those memories. 'Morning Franky, Tuesday, 6th June 1972 started out as one of those beautiful early winter mornings in southern Africa. I was working in the hospital and about 9.30 received a call from my Mum saying that Kamandama had exploded & I should ask the medical team to get there as quickly as possible. Some people thought my Mum was being histrionic. Was the first news we received .... Glynnis Quirke was standing next to me when I received that call and she said "Oh, my Eddie". Shortly, thereafter, the phones were ringing & people arriving at the hospital needing medication - sedation after hearing the news. The world seemed to respond so quickly to this disaster .. proto teams from France & South Africa .. other volunteers who tried to go underground to retrieve friends. My Dad, and many others, landed up in hospital with methane poisoning. Food being made to feed the families waiting for any news at the top of the incline shaft. The explosion was seen very many miles towards Vic Falls .. a mini Hiroshima! There was actually very little chance of any survivors - methane gas & a fire - mercifully the brave people underground died very quickly. However, my heart also goes out to the General Manager, Gordon Livingstone-Blevins, who had to make a decision to seal off the mine. The 432 were already gone, so it was very futile to afford any other people losing their lives. A tragic time by the whole community .... but we should also remember that about 400 black people also died, and we didn't know their names. This whole thing about the beached whales at Kommetjie got me thinking. Those whales didn't have a chance .. Their 'radars' were way off beam, and some of them were actually very sick. Horrible for the people to have to decide to euthanase them. So many people were against the decision Gordon Livingstone-Blevins made about closing the mine. Someone, no matter how awful, has to decide. In the Wankie disaster there were others to consider ... All those rescue teams who came in to try help, but, their lives were also at stake if they continued going underground.' Susan Grave (Carden) - "I remember the day so well. I was sitting on my verandah at 1 Sikabala Road (bottom of Prospect Hill) with my new friend Rena Larkin and her 6 month old baby daughter. We were chatting and having tea and just getting to know each other. We heard the bang and saw people stop on the Hill and look back at something. I went outside and saw this pall of black smoke drifting through the sky. I tried to make some phone calls but got nowhere eventually we walked over to her house and met Margaret van Aardt. She was on her way to Emma's and I asked her what had happened, when she told me I could not turn around to face Rena behind me for a few minutes. Her young husband was working underground at No 2 Colliery. I will never forget that moment. One of many sad stories to tell after this tremendous disaster that happened in Wankie that fateful day. This is in remembrance of Brian Larkin. We went to every memorial service whilst we lived in Wankie, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. Ned was invited for quite a while after he left the mine. On that fateful day, Ned was a member of the Mine Proto Team, and he went down for the initial inspection, but they soon saw there would be no survivors. Ned went back to the Opencast, where they had to produce coal, coal and more coal, as quickly as possible. Ned has his own memories. Sadly we will never make the journey to Kamandama again. Our thoughts and prayers are always with those who died and their families left behind.' Heather McCoy - 'Nigel remembers watching plumes of smoke as he was on break at Thomas Coulter. Nigel, his Dad and Grandmother from England had been down 3 weeks prior to this. Therefore could not believe it, it seemed so safe. It was just so sad.... We visited it often when we lived in Wankie in the 90s.' Tracy Boad (nee Downey) - 'I remember the day very well, the ball of smoke in the air could be seen for miles, and I helped going back and forward with food etc. Was very so sad watching all those poor, wives, mums and daughters crying and the sons like Len van Heerden and Gabs Ramalho trying to put on a brave front all looking so distraught, their fathers were two of the men who lost their lives underground that day. Everyone trying to be supportive and help wherever they could but in actual fact there was very little anyone could do. A member of the proto team from SA was Angus Koen, an ex Wankie employee, they all worked long hours. The crying and the whaling of the black women is something that I will always remember.' Hazel Clarke - 'I was Receptionist at No 2 Colliery. I remember a loud thud, then 2 more. Ran onto verandah; plumes of dust and smoke pouring from the Ventilation Shaft. The Mine Manager said "They haven't got a hope" Sue Smuts stood crying. I was told to go back to my office and man the switchboard. Mothers, wives and everyone started phoning wanting to speak to someone who was still underground. It was awful. Julia v Heerden & I worked 12 hour shifts on the switchboard until she had a nervous breakdown. Her Dad was underground that day. I was only 19 but it was the worst week of my life. Julia was the Lady Tracer in the Survey Department. I could not believe that she was so brave. But the Doctor said that is what tipped her over the edge; she tried to hold it all back. Then the 'walls' collapsed and she was a shaking wreck, poor kid. I think she was about 23 then. Every day Frikkie Schoonraad would bring 4 toasted egg & bacon sandwiches to work. He would have two and then give Sue Smuts and me the other 2 which we would have with tea at 11 every morning. I think the blast was at 10 past 10. She came to me at 11 and asked if I would like a sandwich, I could not bear to even think of eating never mind Frikkie's sandwiches. We both had a cry and gave each other a hug and then it was chin up, chest out and get on with it. Sheila Papenfus used to come down to the offices every afternoon at 2 with a cooler bag with ice bucket, glass, Gin and Tonic and wait for her husband Basil to surface! She said she knew when they eventually found him the first thing he would want would be a G&T.' Louiza Frohlich - 'Remember it like yesterday. I was in our house in Cornwall Road with my youngest son Gary who was a year old, and heard banging at the side door... it was my Mom. She had run all the way from Meikles after hearing the news that Kamandama had exploded! You can imagine the state she was in knowing that her only son Graham (Doc) was down that mine!! All the lights had dimmed and I phoned the power station... as that was where my husband Graham was working at the time, to be told there was an emergency and that he would contact me!. I will never forget when my Dad arrived home from No 3 Colliery and said "Lynne no-one is coming out of that mine ever... stay near your Mom." Then he broke down and cried as I had never seen him do before or ever up to the day he passed away. 'That day and the next are a blur, but can remember sitting outside at Kamandama mine head... waiting, with the wailing of all the African mothers, wives and families getting louder and louder.... we all felt like wailing. It is something I hope I never have to go through again... trying to accept the death of my younger brother, who was just beginning to discover the joys of living... the heartache my Mother endured until her death 2 years ago, only you who have lost loved ones would understand. On the 6th June each year it was relived over and over again and always will be until the day I leave this world for a better place. God bless all who lost loved ones that day, our prayers and thoughts are always with you - we will forever be joined by this tragedy.' Lynne (nee Barclay) & Graham Lee - 'I was making loads of credit transactions at Standard Bank Ltd. while Steve Smuts guessed what I was singing... Abba or ...something else! Ian Dickson was usually party to this... remember guys? Brian Auld and Jean De Wet just rapped us on the knuckles every so often! There was a kind of hush at the bank that day... nobody knew what had really happened...whispers!!! Nobody knew who was really affected... A very sad day in Wankie for so many families and others too. God Bless you all.' Ange van Heerden - 'I was working in the clinic at No. 3 colliery when the nurses got the message to stand by. The rest of the day was one of eerie silence. No-one went out or phoned or spoke. We were all waiting for news. My son Stephen was at school (Gifford in Bulawayo) and he phoned for news in the evening. My daughter Della was in her last year at Thomas Coulter. All my neighbours lost someone in the disaster. Truly a tragic day for the entire town.' Wendy Homes - 'I was at work in the Typing Pool at General Office and we felt the tremor when the blast occurred, plus the power failed. We knew something big had happened but at that stage didn't realise just how big. Then word came in that there was a huge explosion at No.2 Colliery Mine Shaft (Kamandama). Emma Sanderson (then Brazer) who worked in the accounts department at that time, came running into the Typing Pool in an awful state and was worried for the safety of her hubby Vic who was underground and sadly perished that day. The weeks that followed were terrible and it seemed to be the coldest winter that year. A sad chill was all over Wankie. Paddy was at No.1 Cokeworks on the day of the disaster and he too remembers it well. Never to be forgotten. So many lovely people perished that day - black and white.' Paddy & Vera Hegan - 'Remember coming back from school (Thomas Coulter) and listening to the RBC - we were all glued to the radio waiting for the latest. My family was one of the fortunate ones - my Dad, Willie Dauth came out alive. A profoundly tragic loss for the Wankie community.' Laraine Van Der Merwe - 'In 1972 I would have been tucked up in bed at Langdon House, Eveline School. It would have been winter and those hostels were really cold. I would have been looking forward to the Rhodes and Founders.' Heather Coventry (Boad) - 'Wankie Colliery Mine - Head Office. I was in Emma Brazers's office, a short distance down the passage from mine. A few of us were chatting while Emma worked on her huge machine. The lights started to flicker - not another power failure! We joked about it... I dashed back to my office to attempt to finish off the tally I was working on before we lost power. As I punched away I became aware of strange things happening... hurried steps back and forth down the passage, people were darting about, phones ringing, an abnormal drone of voices, panic, Joan Rab, my boss was in and out of our office - there was definitely something odd going on. There was chatter outside the office door... I heard a voice say 'what on earth is going on', 'No. 2 has had an explosion!' was the reply. Could such a statement be true? The past few moments were the beginning of a horrific nightmare that would change the lives of hundreds of people in our little coal mining town. My husband Des, planned to celebrate his 21st birthday the next day (7th). I remember Des returning home at the end of the longest day we could remember and said to me, 'I'm cancelling my party, I can't celebrate my birthday, we've lost Doc'. Doc Barclay, was the only appi underground that day.' He was so, so young. Franky Rumbold (Burns) - 'No 13 and the Wankie Mine Disaster 1) in 1968 there was an explosion and the mine was evacuated at 10.30 am minus the zeroes = 13 2) on May 24th 1972 the miner reported a methane gas build. This was 13 days before the disaster 3) The section where the explosion is believed to have happened was 1.12 EAST 12+1=13. The following is true but strange; 1)TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA is the fear of the number 13 2) I started work at Wankie Colliery on Monday the 13th 3) I arrived on a Saturday my house was not ready so my family and I were booked into the Baobab hotel room No 13 4) The number of people killed in the Disaster was 427 4+2+7 = 13 5) The date was 06/06/1972 added together = 31, reversed = 13 6) The year 1972, 1 from 9 =8 +7=15-2 = 13 7) The first house we lived in was in Ridge Drive No 13. D J Parsonage - 'I remember I was working in the Butchers and all the machines stopped, one of the women there had a husband and brother down the mine and we had no idea except the town went very quiet, we ended up putting some men up at the house from Zambia. Will always remember... the one man brought his wife and she looked around at the furniture and said, 'not bad for mine furniture?' Silly the daft things you remember.'
