NEWS FROM RON FORDE Remember Ron Forde, who worked at the Adventist Dental Practice in Suburbs, Bulawayo for many years. ? "I left Bulawayo in 1999 and am teaching at my Alma Mater, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California. I enjoy my new work very much, but you have no idea how much I miss Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, and all my patients and friends. I also share deeply the problems the people of the country are enduring. I check on the internet daily to stay abreast of what's going on, and I ache inside. May God bless you, your families, my former patients, friends and the beautiful country of Zimbabwe." Cordially, ANIMAL RESCUE SITE Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. I should have been on the 1150 flight but as usual left things to the last minute and the rail system snafued me between Swindon and Reading. What should have been 30 minutes took over 11/2 hrs, so I caught a taxi at Reading and he got me to Terminal 4 with 15 minutes to go! They kindly gave me a boarding card and told me to run to Gate 18 which of course was the furthest away. I would have done the OM Striders proud and I dived for the finish line as they closed the door – guess that sums up my athletic abilities. The friendly BA ground-stewardess could barely hide her smile as we watched the plane being loaded. Never mind, she said, the next flight is at 2230 hrs tonight getting you into Athens at a restful 0400hrs!! I am sure BA run a tote on how quickly someone can get from check in to the boarding gate – funny, in the movies they always seem to make it! Thank heavens for Olympic Airways but I then had to get from out of the boarding area of Terminal 4 to the check in of Terminal 2 – no mean feat itself! Well, what has all this to do with the heading – nothing at all really. Except that in Zim they would have admired my sprint down the travelator and kept the door open. I’m afraid things are a little more prescriptive here in the 1st world. That leads me to the Hot Dogs. This place is totally wrapped up in rules and regulations especially wrt safety and protecting the minorities. This has got to the ridiculous when a colleague of ours was prevented from selling Hot Dogs at a school function because the boiling water was deemed to be dangerous! Julie is not allowed to ride her bike or scooter to school (even with mum trotting alongside), in case she rides into the wall and sues the school for putting it there! The trouble is that the more the “system” tries to replace our common sense the greater the chance for accidents, as people stop thinking for themselves. Enough of the whining – it is actually wonderful to be part of an efficient and free society. The summer is truly glorious and the countryside is brimming with foot, bike and bridal paths, leafy glades and bubbling brooks. Its very safe and we are all revelling in that most desirable state – peace of mind! Did I say safe? A few evenings back we were preparing for bed when a dreadful rasping moaning sound, something like a combination of a large python and the buck that it was constricting came through the front windows. Memories flooded back as I reached for my pistol, my knob kerrie – but alas – I had happily disposed of these in Bulawayo. So with my trusty 7 iron and 3 million candle spotlight I stepped out gingerly into our postage stamp front garden. And there they were – Mr and Mrs Hedgehog doing their Discovery Channel thing. Either that or it was Mr and Mr punching it out for the honour. Whichever, it was obviously quite painful which is understandable, considering the prickly problem of achieving the objective. So I returned triumphantly indoors having once more defended my family from the dangers of the wild world! We can’t wait to be back in Bulawayo in August. Best wishes +++++++++++++++++++++ THE "COLLECTION" IS BACK IN DURBAN Remember that great band from Bullies the Collection ?
