Fittingly, the Zimbabwe Academy of Music will host a series of poetry discussions led by the veteran author, winner of the Ingrid Jonker Prize for Poetry, who has selected ten transcendently 'musical' poems to explore with other enthusiasts in a friendly and communicative forum. There is a suggested donation of 1 or 2 dollars per session to cover costs. Participants are asked to read the relevant poem beforehand. 3) Roses And Raspberries ROSES The Director and Staff at the Museum would like to thank the Fire Brigade for their rapid response to a smoke alert at the museum on Wednesday 24th May. Luckily there was no damage. Instalite Electricians are to also be thanked for their prompt response and for finding the fault, and for doing this free of charge as a community service. I am so sorry to read the story about the people who picked up the kittens in the hiilside area andthe poor animals turned out to be suffering from rabies. I hope that the people concerned are okay. I wish that City Council was doing their job properly and cleaning up all bushy areas in residential suburbs. In vacant school grounds you now find mealies growing everywhere. We are paying rates but nothing is done in keeping the ares tidy and in order. Ticks are also carriers of rabies and these poor kittens might have been bitten by ticks. If they cannot keep the areas clean and neat at least spray the areas. People that are also leaving the country should not abandon their pets, especially cats, rather have them put down if suitable homes cannot be found. I think City Council needs to jack up its ideas instead of just taking our money. Rates payer Raspberries With reference to the comments about rabies in the last Morning Mirror, warnings were made in Morning Mirrors No.525 and 526, by VAWZ. I know it referred to Harare, but we live in Africa where rabies is endemic. There have always been out breaks of rabies in Bulawayo and surrounding areas, I have heard of both cattle and a horse contracting the virus in the last 18 months. Please educate your children about this problem and do not let them pick up kittens, puppies etc unless you know where they are from. I speak from experience, I was badly bitten by an injured dog I was trying to save I also had to have rabies injection which at the time had to be sourced outside the country, very scary and expensive. As to the authorities not notifying the public, in the last few weeks I have seen a rather graphic poster of a dog with rabies put out by the Veterinary department. If you find animal's that you do not know their origin or an animal that is ill contact the SPCA or the Government Veterinary Department, they are both very helpful. If it is a wild animal e.g. a jackal then contact National Parks. Rabies is deadly, do not risk your life. Keep your own pets up to date with their jabs, cats are becoming more vulnerable due the genet cats encroaching on our suburbs to find food. Another concerned resident.

I'm thrilled to tell you Wankie Friends & Trivia is still going strong - we celebrate our 5th birthday on 19th May. The approaching June issue, like all previous June issues will be dedicated to the Wankie Mine Disaster of 6th June 1972, it touched so many of us, we lost family, friends, neighbours, colleagues. Last night Twalumba stayed at the Painted Hunting Dog project in Hwange. This is a fantastic project, looking after a beautiful wildlife species. Today Twalumba is on her way to Bulawayo via Lupane where she will visit the Environment Africa team and the Lupane residents. In Bulawayo Twalumba is being received by the National Parks and Wildlife Authority on their ZITF stand where she is the guest of honour at their Media cocktail tonight.
