2003 and beyond.......

DEMOGRAPHICS

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:

  • 57 Asians

  • 21 Europeans

  • 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south

  • 8 Africans

  • 52 would be female

  • 48 would be male

  • 70 would be non-white

  • 30 would be white

  • 70 would be non-Christian

  • 30 would be Christian

  • 89 would be heterosexual

  • 11 would be homosexual

  • 6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all would be from the United States.

  • 80 would live in substandard housing

  • 70 would be unable to read

  • 50 would suffer from malnutrition

  • 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth

  • 1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education

  • 1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.

The following is also something to ponder...

  • If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

  • If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

  • If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.

  • If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.

  • If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace .... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

  • If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada.

  • If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Our monthly grocery, meat and vegetable hampers are made up to contain the following items, and the average cost per hamper is $14,720.00. We have large stocks of foodstuffs in our storeroom and the aforementioned costing has been calculated using the prices paid when purchasing the goods most of which were in January. Replacement of stocks will obviously be much more expensive. We continue to receive donations of foodstuffs which are a tremendous help in keeping the average costing down.

  • 1kg sugar 500g milk powder

  • 500g salt 5 assorted tins/baked beans/spaghetti/meatballs/sweetcorn/etc

  • 1 box Pronutro OR Oats 1 packet lobels biscuits

  • 1 laundry Bar Soap 1 x 100g sweets

  • 1 tablet toilet soap 250g tea

  • 1 750ml dishwasher 1 tin jam/mamalade

  • 1 bottle body lotion 1kg rice OR pasta

  • 1 500ml mazoe orange 1 small toothpaste

  • 4 pkts Maggie soup 4 x 250g steak mince

  • 2 pkts Maggie relish mix 2 x 375g beef sausages

  • 500ml cooking oil Vegetables/ small quantities of cabbage, tomatoes, onions,

  • 2 toilet rolls butternut, spinach, or whatever is available at time of packing.

The distribution parcels are very gratefully received by all the recipients and it is very rewarding to note that the general appearance and well-being of some of these folks has decidedly improved since we started the exercise. I firmly believe that we have on our list several persons who were suffering from the initial stages of malnutrition. Thankfully, due to all you wonderful caring contributors, we have averted that catastrophe.

Once again, on behalf of the recipients, I thank you one and all for your generosity and concern.

Kind Regards,
Lyn Abbot

TRICKSTER/CON ARTIST

A very plausable coloured lady of +/- 35 is going to businesses offering them flour, cooking oil, mealie meal and sugar at a very competative price.

She has a very noticable gap in her front teeth and is about 5' 3" tall.

She gives the impression of knowing you or your staff from some time in the past.

I know of two companies plus our own who have given her money without receiving the goods.

She gave us a mango cell number but that number is out of service.

COTTAGE NEEDED URGENTLY

TIM DEAN OF SALON ELIZABETH NEEDS A SMALL COTTAGE IN THE KUMALO AREA. TELEPHONE 286243 HOME AND 237135 BUSINESS.

Zimbabwe Drums

The drums are calling, old man, and they're louder by the day,
They are calling you to judgement and now's the time to pay,
For the wrongs you've done your country and the trust you have
betrayed,
So hear those drumbeats swelling, hear well and be afraid.

You came to power on waves of hope that you would make your mark,
In a land that shone in Africa like diamonds in the dark.
In simple faith the people put their trust within your care,
And were repaid by the Fifth Brigade and the CIO and fear.

Twenty years of motorcades and lavish trips abroad,
A nation's heritage is lost through patronage and fraud.
The chefs grow fat while people starve and famine stalks our homes,
On idle farms the weeds grow rank and cover cattle bones.

The youth are taught your slogans but even as they sing
The drums of change are beating for the truth is seeping in.
The demagogue has feet of clay and lies will not sustain
The shattered land that once seemed free and will be so again.

Too late to blame the drought, the Brits, the whites or MDC
For all know where the finger points with cold finality.

So hear the drums, old man, and listen to them well,
They foretell of your end days and they have much to tell.
For he who sows the seeds of hate will reap the grapes of wrath,
So tremble in your bed at night, at the end of your sorry path.

‘O’ level English Study Guides

’amaBooks of Bulawayo have just published a study guide to the‘O’-level poetry anthology for Zimbabwean schools, Many People Many Voices. Specifically, this book covers the African poems in the four sections of Many People Many Voices that have been set for November 2002 until June 2006: Love; Belief, Myth, Legend and the Past; Nature and Seasons; and Living Creatures. The book is available in all good Zimbabwe bookshops.

’amaBooks will be publishing another study guide, to the ‘O’ level English text I Will Marry When I Want, by Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Ngugi wa Mirii, in mid-June 2003.

Both the ’amaBooks Guidelines were written by John Eppel, who has a Master’s degree in English from the University of Natal and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of London. He has been teaching English for over 30 years and is Head of English at Christian Brothers College in Bulawayo.

John Eppel is also a prize-winning poet and novelist, having been awarded the Ingrid Jonker Prize for his collection, Spoils of War, and the M-Net prize for his first novel D.G.G.Berry’s The Great North Road. Two further collections of his poetry and four novels have since been published.

The 'amaBooks novel by Wim Boswinkel, Erina, is still available in bookshops.

“Erina is a story of the Second Coming, a girl child this time, born not in Bethlehem, not in Rome, not in Waco (Texas), but in a remote village in the middle of Africa. Erina will shock those who deserve to be shocked and delight those who deserve to be delighted”.

If you have any difficulty obtaining the books, please contact ‘amaBooks through amabooks@gatorzw.com

SMALL HOUSE NEEDED FOR FARMING FAMILY

I've been looking for a small house in Bulawayo for my elderly parents for sometime now - either to buy or rent. A fairly central location like Suburbs or close by would be ideal as my father is virtually blind and cannot drive and my mother is disabled and shouldn't drive. They are currently living on a small holding out at Esigodini and rely on me to take them shopping when coming down to Bulawayo to watch sport and to fetch and carry my son who is at Falcon College.

Whilst at the moment this is fine, my son leaves school at the end of the year and, fuel is becoming so difficult to get, I would feel happier if they were nearer the shops in the event that I cannot get down at any stage. My husband and I live on a farm approximately seven hours away so, and up to now we have been blessed to have enough fuel to get down on a monthly basis - it may not always be that easy to locate fuel in the future.

Please Margaret, if you hear of anything suitable would you be kind enough to email me on phenning@mweb.co.zw

THOUGHTS FROM THE SCHOLEFIELDS

Just to say you're all in our thoughts as you gear up for this week of stayaways. It got a very brief mention on the news yesterday and haven't heard anything today. Let's hope and pray that it has some effect on this awful regime and things can at least go forward from here.

Good luck.

FROM MIKE AND ANGIE HODGES

Imagine an early Saturday morning, the temperature is about 20 degrees and rising at a degree every half hour so it is very pleasant........... until you see the golf course - the first tee is covered in a coarse kikuyu grass just to tempt one .... that and the 10th tee are the only evidence of any grass on the course!

Local rules - tee up on the fairway................ see the fairway and weep!

Do not under any circumstances use a good set of clubs - borrow someone else's if possible. In the rough you can tee up on anything within a club's radius - you have to have this rule or any ball is unplayable! Find a tuft of grass, spinifex, tree, soft ground (there is one hole with a small piece of sand nearby) and hit off that or your club is history.

DONT GO INTO THE ROUGH! Playing golf in the outback results in a lot of lost balls - or if you have plenty of time - a lot of found balls. If you think that hitting the ball straight down the fairway is safe forget it! Any shot can, and often does, hit a small stone and veer off at 90 degrees into the rough. Any shot going into the rough NEVER hits a stone and bounces back onto the fairway (Hodgy's Law of golf).

For those who don't know anything about the art of golf, the spoon attached to the flag is for digging the sand out of the cup.

The temperature rose to the mid thirties by lunch time and we had only done nine holes - the back nine were much easier so it took only another two hours. Thoroughly dehydrated by the time we hit the 19th. But only downed two (half strength) beers in quick sucession and then home -why? Because the bloody drink driving laws are so harsh that no-one risks getting caught!

The ball washing device is a cunning invention - it is an oblong tin with two scrubbing brushes screwed in to each side and facing each other. In the centre is a plastic strip about 15mm thick with a hole the size of the ball at the bottom. place the ball in the plastic and jerk it up and down between the brushes. the tin is filled with detergent and in a few seconds you have a pristine clean ball. Very useful as the balls pick up the red colour from the sand and rocks very quickly and become difficult to find - even on the fairway.

Green fees -Aus$5. Membership of the club Aus$50. (about US$3 and $30 respectively).

For those of you who might want to know what I went round in ....... forget it, suffice it to say that here the handicaps go out to 27 due to the course and ther is no chance of mine being reduced.

Enjoy
Mike

Eulogy to Martin King

It is with deep sadness that I must tell you of the passing of Martin King at the age of 55 after a long battle with cancer here in Australia.

Martin was my very dear friend, who has fought beside me tirelessly for the last 5 years on our personal crusade to bring the state of Mugabe's Tyranny to the awareness of the world. It was his very dear wish that he would survive the tyranny of you know whoMagus but that was not to be.

Martin was brought up in the farming community of Marandellas in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe in the 1950's and 1960's and as young teenager he used to go out hunting before and after school to provide the food to support his mother and fellow siblings. He was very careful to shoot only animals without young as he cared very deeply for the wildlife and bush of Africa. He had a hard start to life but it instilled in him a very deep and passionate feeling for his fellow human beings, the natural world and Rhodesia /Zimbabwe a country he loved deeply.

Martin abhorred racism, injustice, arrogance, or intolerance of any sort, a driving force in his quest to fight the dictatorship of you know who which is the epitome of arrogance, racism, injustice and intolerance.

No need to worry Martin your efforts were not in vain..............

I will miss Martin terribly, his cheerful countenance and infectious laughter, his passion for what is right. The world will be a poorer place without Martin but his will to fight injustice must fight on and this it surely will. You will always be remembered in our hearts for your valiant stand against tyranny and justice.

May you rest in peace my true and dear friend farewell.

My deepest felt sympathy go out to Martins family and friends at a time of great loss.

FROM A FRIEND OF MARTINS

SAD THOUGHTS

"This is becoming a really interesting place. The only country in the world where your largest note - $500 - can't buy you a beer, which is $650. A roll of 1-ply toilet paper costs $1000.

There are approximately 72 sections on the average roll, so it is cheaper to take your $1000, change it into $10's, wipe your butt on 72 of them and get $280 change.
