1) Editorial

Bulawayo has some interesting places to visit and some excellent restaurants but nothing quite compares to the restaurant HeeHoo and I went to in Jozi!!

It was the fortieth anniversary of Safripol, one of HeeHoo's suppliers and they went out of their way to say thank you to their hundred or so customers last week

First of all we were bussed to the Glenshiels Manor House in Westcliffe, one of the glorious old Johannesburg homes designed by Sir Herbert Baker during the gold rush in the 1890s.

After a superb "High Tea" which included amongst other delicious things - Moet & Chandon champers, the most exquisite red velvet cake, smoked salmon canapes and of course Earl Grey Tea, we were then moved to the new Wits University Art Museum in Bramfontein just three minutes away from the Nelson Mandela Bridge. It was a feast of delights.

Wits Art Museum is home to an extraordinary collection of African art, including contemporary and historical art from South Africa and art from West and Central Africa. It hosts a dynamic program of events and art exhibitions. The Museum is one of Johannesburg's premier tourist attractions, along with the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. It is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct, just three blocks from Nelson Mandela Bridge. WAM is in the hip, regenerating area of Braamfontein, which is also home to many students, interesting shops and places to eat.

Finally we ended up at Randlords, twenty two stories up in a building on De Korte Street boasting the most extraordinary view of Johannesburg. It is the ultimate address for exclusive corporate and private events. Randlords is open to the public on select special event days.

This restaurant was indeed something special and apart from brilliant decor and an excellent menu, it boasted very attentive service, and some amazing entertainment in the form of four beautiful young and vivacious women on violins and cello.

Now the reason I am telling you all of this is that the majority of the people I have spoken to had no idea that these outstanding attractions even exist in the centre of one of the most famous cities in all the world.

"No one goes into the centre of Johannesburg" I have heard time and time again, but the good news is that the Johannesburg CBD is now probably one of the safest places in the city !! We walked from the museum back to Randlords just to prove it - so come on Jozi residents, come and see for yourselves.

And thank you so much to Safripol for a brilliant night out, and congratulations on your fortieth anniversary!!

INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY ACTION RETURNS TO BULAWAYO
The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe is pleased to advise that preparations for the Africa Cup of Club Champions tournament to be hosted at Bulawayo's Khumalo Hockey Stadium are well underway, and another week of superb hockey is on the cards. The tournament will run from 1st to 8th December 2012.
12 men's and 8 women's teams have entered, making this largest international hockey competition on the continent this year. The teams could not ask for a better facility than the refurbished Khumalo Hockey Stadium, which is regarded as the premier hockey centre in Africa.
The African Champions, Sharkia, have confirmed that they will be participating to defend their title, whilst the Ghanaian teams will pose a strong challenge. Zimbabwe will be represented by Hippo Valley and Hulettes Hockey Club, in the men's tournament, whilst BAC women will carry the local flag in the ladies tournament. Teams from Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe have confirmed entry.
Many of the players who participated in the African Olympic Qualifiers in Bulawayo last year, and who impressed the spectators with their skill and play, will be participating in their club colours. This makes for a week of exciting hockey and the competition is expected to be intense.

'Snow White and the Huntsman' is the new fantasy film based on the Brothers Grimm's classic fairy tale. Directed by Rupert Sanders, it stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, it 'offers an appropriately dark take on the fairy tale that inspired it' and 'is an ambitious - at times mesmerizing - application of the latest cinematic technology which tries to recapture some of the menace of the stories that used to be told to scare children rather than console them'. I am asking for your help in finding a pair of crutches for an old lady who had a knee implant which has now gone bad on her -
Medical Aid does not pay for these . Is there any body out there who can sell/donate a pair for the Old Lady aged 83 this year. She has 1 crutch which is not good enough, as she also has a back problem and is stooped all the time. I feel it would be better if she is able to stand upright.

At last Glencoe received its first rainfall of the season. It was such a treat to be able to go into the garden and nursery and enjoy it instead of worrying about how to keep it all alive with such a limited amount of water - so far, so good! On Thursday, we received some new plants which included the new Euphorbias, Diamond Fizz and Diamond Blush - wonderful white summer flowering perennials. There are the three very popular Durantas, Sheena's Gold, Blue Sapphire and Goldmine and something different - a Tabasco Yellow Chillie which I am assured is very, very hot. We have Jatropha, different verbenas just to mention a few of a huge selection of plants which range from succulents to ferns.
This year we are trying to encourage everyone to plant at least one - preferably more - indigenous trees/shrubs. Huntsman Trees, run by Brian and Lene Williams have a vast selection of trees and shrubs to chose from. For information on the trees please contact either Tropica or Huntsman Trees (email: huntsmantrees@gmail.com). They have compiled a list of suitable trees and shrubs for the average sized suburban garden which is very comprehensive and very useful.
