ISLAND HOSPICE
BULAWAYO Island Hospice Service Dear Friend Island Hospice, like so many other charitable organisations, is currently experiencing a very difficult time financially. In our particular case we really do not want to reduce the numbers of our nursing and training staff as they, I am sure you will agree, perform a vital role in the community. Accordingly we are hoping to not only raise the money needed from you , the Bulawayo public, to enable us to carry on giving you the service that you have come to expect and appreciate, but also hope to educate the public, particularly our junior citizens, as to what exactly Island Hospice is all about. We are starting off with Tackie Day on Friday May 30th. and we are hoping that all the schools will participate in what should be a fun occasion. At the same time we are asking the business sector to also join in and thus show their support. Because of the fuel problems it is impossible for us to canvass you personally by delivering posters so what we are asking you to do, when you receive this letter, is to print off the attachment - which is a small poster - and display it/or them if you have a large workplace, so that all your staff members can participate too. One more request, if you are willing to join in on this fundraiser....and we really do need you desperately... can you e-mail any of these addresses so that we can organise the collection of the donations after May 30th. jacety@mwewb.co.zw I can confidently say that there is not a family in Bulawayo whose lives will not be touched one day by the service that we perform. whether it is a family member, friend or colleague... so we are asking you to support us now so that we can go on supporting you. Thank you Worm warning over contact with dogs Doctors are urging people to wash their hands after playing with dogs, after research shows they could become infected with a worm that causes blindness simply by stroking an infected animal. A report in New Scientist magazine says experts previously thought the worms only spread to people who came into contact with dog faeces. Now the findings suggest that people could be at risk from dogs themselves and should therefore be extra careful about washing and worming their pets. The worms can grow up to 20 centimetres long in the intestines of dogs. If a human becomes infected, the worms can grow in the back of the eye, causing lesions that can interfere with vision or be mistaken for tumours. On rare occasions they can lead to blindness. If the worms migrate to other organs, such as the liver or lung, they can cause toxocariasis, which has symptoms similar to glandular fever. According to Ian Wright, a vet practising in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, who conducted the research, about 20 people a year in the UK become infected with the worm. In the US, about 10,000 people a year, mainly children under 12, become infected. Mr Wright examined 60 dogs and found that a quarter had eggs of the worm in their hair. Three of the 71 eggs they recovered contained mature worm embryos, which can infect humans. About 25 per cent of the eggs contained embryos that had started to develop. The researchers found up to 180 eggs in 1 gram of dog hair. This is a much higher density than is found in soil. The eggs, which are only a millimetre long, are very sticky and could easily be picked up when stroking a dog, Mr Wright says. He recommends dog owners regularly wash and worm their pets, and wash their hands. "Wash your hands before meals and after a good cuddle," he says and adds that owners should also take special care with hygiene if infants and babies share the house with dogs.
