"Bolt" was a ballet to a politically correct story that fell foul of the authorities and had only one performance in Shostakovich's lifetime. It was finally revived by the Bolshoi 74 years later in 2005 and an instant success. "Cherry Town" comes from a quarter of a century later in 1957 and is a genuine operetta full of catchy tunes. The film was made in 1963 and there is little that 'differentiates it from standard 1950s Hollywood fare featuring the likes of Doris Day or Bing Crosby, though the lunacy of some of the set pieces is more reminiscent of the silent era. Special thanks to the 26 on Park for waiving the venue hire costs, to the Red Hat Ladies who provided delicious cakes and sandwiches, Mrs Fiona Lander, BHN and the models who helped with a fashion show, Mrs Jenny Bent and her 'brave' models who did fun fashions, Mrs Sandy Whitehead and Mrs Colleen Peters who gave informative and thought provoking talks, Marina Jackson, Sharon Brown and Arlene Mpofu who assisted with the demos and give aways. The event raised $840.00 towards settling our monthly commitments of utilities, fuel and vehicle maintenance, salaries and other running expenses and once again proved that though this is a Mans' world, it aint nothing without a Woman! Well done gals!! On Friday 3 August two men one tall and fairly slim the other short and quite large walked into the office with a short large woman. The woman asked for a glass of water while the men walked into the showroom. I tended to the men in the showroom who pretended to be there separately, who were constantly talking over each other, basically distracting me. When we were done in the showroom we walked out to the office when I noticed the lady was no longer there. This was virtually not even two minutes. The men left and I went over to my bag and immediately noticed that my purse was missing. I ran outside and the whole lot of them had vanished.. I lost close on $400 in a matter of two minutes. I am told that the exact same crew went to Wayne's butchery in Hillside but this time stealing the whole handbag. If people can be aware of their description and tactics maybe this lot can be caught out. R.C. PLUMTREE ROAD A concerned Bulawayo resident is doing a fabulous job providing swing trash bins for use by our citizens. This is being sanctioned by Bulawayo Municipality but we need more bins. ZANE in Australia I am delighted to let you know that ZANE Australia is now a reality. This was initially due to the inspiration of Lindsay Sherman and Alex Reed who have used Trivia evenings to fundraise for two years in Sydney. After the event in 2012, a group of people offered to help. The result is we have a great team emerging which is energized and focused. On the board we have : Steve Pulman, Jenna Harris, Craig Marshall, Lindsay Sherman, Kevin Gillett, Leanne Bray, myself and Robert Beckinsale who represents ZANE UK on the Australian board. Tom Benyon (OBE), who founded ZANE in the UK in 2002, is the Patron of ZANE Australia . ZANE Australia is able to receive donations and arrange fundraising events. We will be able to move any money raised directly to Zimbabwe in a systematic way. In the future we hope to achieve Deductable Gift Recipient DGR) status with the Australian government. There are strict guidelines and outcomes that need to be met and measured over several years,so hence it is a long process to achieve.This means that your donations will not be deductible at this stage. Inside Zimbabwe the situation for pensioners goes from bad to worse. The retirement homes are our core concern and our primary aim is to keep them open and functioning as efficiently as possible. We also are involved in work amongst the poorest communities. Tom Benyon has done a herculean task of fundraising all these years, but even his efforts are not enough anymore.
