From an early age he was interested in music and began learning the guitar as a teenager. During his student years, he became increasingly devoted to music and started writing songs to express his own particular style. Influenced by the likes of Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill, Simphiwe Dana and Oliver Mtukudzi, Bongeziwe founded a group which played afro-folk music sung in English or Xhosa. Initially he showed little interest in exploring his Xhosa musical roots, but he gradually came to realise that it was an important part of his identity and a significant aspect of cultural expression.. Mabandla’s music is a fusion between traditional Xhosa music, soul, hip-hop and dub style. It is serene, harmonious and accessible to a wide audience. 7pm, Saturday 16th June 2012 @ Horizon, Pioneer House, 8th Ave/Fife St., Bulawayo Tickets: $5 at the door.
