5) Condolences/In Memorium/Wreath Funds Ken and Marjorie MacDonald tragically killed in Bulawayo. Both so very special to Bulawayo and the entire community. Deaths: I was very upset to read about the deaths of Marj and Ken MacDonald. What stalwarts they were in Bulawayo - so, so many people will remember them - especially Marj - with being a barmaid, then owning her own nightclub, then having her own shop - all the while, doing the best she could for people who needed her help. So many of us have left Bulawayo, but I hate to think of my dear old hometown without those two in it. Rest in Peace Marj and Ken. Carol MacKenzie. McKie - Audrey Dearest friend and ex work colleague of Tracy Smith-Rose (Parkinson). You will be sorely missed, go well Auds. Only one week after it was launched Carlos unexpectedly passed away leaving behind his wife and young children. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. It has been over 7 months since I was handed the reins of SCS, what an experience it has been and continues to be! Meeting and helping our once proud and independent pensioners who had worked hard to provide for their retirement and are now left with nothing except memories of how life used to be, before losing everything to rampant inflation. In recent months SCS has faced serious challenges in respect of dwindling donations due to the worldwide recession. Three weeks ago, we had to take the painful decision to remove the facility of supplying over the counter medication to conserve funds. Until further notice SCS can only supply chronic medication until funding improves. At this point I must say a huge thank you to those who have continued to support us and those that have recently donated, some of you on a monthly basis. Without your unstinting help in these trying times, we would have closed long ago. I continue to closely monitor all expenditure, although we still require around $3,000, £2,000 or R24000 each month to operate at our current level. Should we be able to afford it in the future, we have had an offer from a dentist who will supply services free of charge once a month if we pay for consumables. This will provide a much needed service. I end this newsletter with a huge thank you to all of you that continue to support SCS, enabling us to help those who through no fault of their own, find themselves having to rely on others for help. Then there was the highly successful music festival, during which the world premiere of The Song of the Carnivores took place at the Large City Hall. This featured over 500 school children from all over Bulawayo together with international musicians who performed to music composed by Richard Sissons. There are plans to perform in SADC countries as well as in London. Wonderful publicity for Bulawayo! The Zimbabwe Pharmaceutical Society and College of Primary Care Physicians Congress and AGM was also held during this time at the Holiday Inn. The Bulawayo Publicity Association was kept busy with tourists from various countries, amongst them Germans, Greeks, Japanese and 6 from Czechoslovakia. They were all happy to be in Bulawayo and very complimentary about the assistance given by the staff. Some of them carried Zimbabwe guide books and were delighted to show us the recommendation from the Editor to the effect that BPA was the focal point for visitors when arriving in Bulawayo. Reports from members of the local tourist industry who attended the Indaba Travel Show in Durban, one of the world's major travel shows held annually, reported that there was a lot of interest in Zimbabwe and it is hoped that this will show results in view of the World Tourism Organization Congress which is to take place at Victoria Falls next year. THE AFRICAN TRAVEL AGENTS CONGRESS was held at the Victoria Falls just after the Indaba and was attended by over 400 members of the TRAVEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY. Mrs Bhulu of Glen Lodge and Mr Ngwenya, proprietor of Elgiboh Travel and Tours, reported that it was very successful and they were very pleased with the networking they were able to do. Mr Ngwenya said that he had met and had talks with several CEOs of companies as well as the President of ATA. They were all positive about tourism to Zimbabwe but said that it was important to set up all-inclusive tours which they could sell, and that this should include transport into and outside of Zimbabwe. It was also pointed out that websites were important as it was one of the main sources of information, as well as DVDs, as opposed to brochures. The Association is happy to announce that it is progressing well with its plans to produce a DVD of Bulawayo and western Zimbabwe resorts as a whole. ART ON THE STOEP, an exhibition of talented women painters, will be held in the gardens of 16 Park Road from 10.30 to 5p.m. Also on display and sale will be decorative glassware and embellished silverware. Refreshments will be available. Entrance is $2 per adult. THE LUPANE WOMEN'S CENTRE, some 171kms from Bulawayo on the Victoria Falls Road offers accommodation for up to 34 guests and has a restaurant attached. There are also conference facilities. The Centre is an excellent stop-over for refreshments and has the added attraction of a variety of crafts for sale, as well as vegetables and herbs and eggs from their own fowls.
