DIOXINS BEWARE !

Dr Edward Fujimoto has a lot to say about dioxins and saying how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies to foods that  contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics, releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Dioxins are carcinogens (cancer causing agents), and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends that we should be using glass, pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, but without the dioxins.

So such things as TV dinners, reheated foods, soups, etc. should be removed from the container, and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad, but you don't know what is in the paper. It is just safer to use tempered glass, pyrex, etc. He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

To add to this: Saran (plastic) wrap, placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food.

Instead, you should use a paper towel.

Dear Friend

Island Hospice, like so many other charitable organisations, is currently experiencing a very difficult time financially. In our particular case we really do not want to reduce the numbers of our nursing and training staff as they, I am sure you will agree, perform a vital role in the community.

Accordingly we are hoping to not only raise the money needed from you , the Bulawayo public, to enable us to carry on giving you the service that you have come to expect and appreciate, but also hope to educate the public, particularly our junior citizens, as to what exactly Island Hospice is all about.

We are starting off with Tackie Day on Friday May 30th. and we are hoping that all the schools will participate in what should be a fun occasion. At the same time we are asking the business sector to also join in and thus show their support.Because of the fuel problems it is impossible for us to canvass you personally by delivering posters so what we are asking you to do, when you receive this letter, is to print off the attachment - which is a small poster - and display it/or them if you have a large workplace, so that all your staff members can participate too.

One more request, if you are willing to join in on this fundraiser....and we really do need you desperately... can you e-mail any of these addresses so that we can organise the collection of the donations after May 30th.

I can confidently say that there is not a family in Bulawayo whose lives will not be touched one day by the service that we perform...whether it is a family member, friend or colleague...so we are asking you to support us now so that we can go on supporting you.

Thank you
Yours in Hospice

GOOD JOB WANTED FOR COOK / DOMESTIC WORKER

My ex house worker in Harare, David, has a job that is very poorly paid and he is obviously not really appreciated by his employers. I did everything I could for him before I left but with the current economic climate he's not doing too well. He's an extraordinary man. A staunch Christian in his late 50's. Superb cook and brilliant at flower arranging. Very good with animals. He's currently earning Z$10,000 which is absurd, he's worth his wait in gold.

ANTI HI JACK TRUST

The Anti Hi-Jack Trust is now up and running in Bulawayo between the hours of 8 am - 12 pm. The contact number is 011-701323. I give out my address and home phone number ONLY to victims.

I have had to deal with over 17 victims since middle March, but know of a number of hijackings daily, but need the victims to contact me.

The Trust has the following objectives:

  1. To help the victim through the Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome

  2. To give speeches and talks to various companies and groups.

  3. Liaison with the police.

We are not here to recover their vehicle, though we do advise the police country wide as soon as we are notified.

At the moment it is only myself that is doing all of this, plus trying to get sponsorship for our Bulawayo office in the form of money donations, which is used for the running of the office and mainly to help the victims if they require some assistance that they cannot afford. So far I have approached 4 major companies in Bulawayo who were very eager for me to give their staff and family members a talk - we charge companies $ 15 000-00 for a talk .

Harare office has taken off well and I have been involved in the Trust since it began in 1998.

HELP !!!

I am producing the school play this year and I need some help from you all.

Using a time machine, the children in the play visit the year 1967 and they have to learn the Windmill Dance. Was there such a dance in the 60's? and does anyone know it if there was? If you were not around to know about that era then please ask around in your office building or ask your parents. Thank you all!

I can be contacted on juliandy@botsnet.bw

BIRD WATCHING AND FALCONRY WEEK-END

16TH- 18TH MAY, MAIN CAMP, HWANGE NATIONAL PARK

A variety of walks and drives including a special night drive will be given by well-known Ornithologist, Dr Peter Mundy and Main Camp’s resident guide/birder Elias Banda. Walks have been organized to take the best advantage of time of day, season, habitat and bird species. Morning walks will be in the Main Camp area in mostly Acacia bush to look for Burnt-necked Eremomelas, Titbabblers, Violet-eared Waxbills, Cisticolas etc. Drives with the experts to look for raptors and grassland birds will take place later each day. On Saturday evening we have special permission to drive into the Park on this full-moon night to look for nightjars, plovers, owls and other nocturnal species. Upon entering the Park at night each car will be given a small radio to keep in touch with the ornithologist in the lead car and learn more about the nocturnal birds sighted.

World-renowned falconer Ron Hartley will be here to talk specifically on the raptors of the Main Camp area and he will also be bringing with him a number of Falcons and small raptors. Birders will have an up-close opportunity to see these birds and to witness the art of falconry with the birds showing the speed and finesse with which they fly. All birds are fitted with radio collars and Ron will be explaining just how these are put on the bird and how they function.

There’s plenty of entertainment organised for the week-end including a performance by ‘Miombo’, the talented conservation drama group. An ‘Icebreaker’ has also been organized on Friday evening at 8pm in the Waterbucks Head bar, to get to know one-another and to meet the Ornithologists Dr. Mundy and Elias Banda.

WALK ON MOTHER'S DAY

We have informed the Zimbabwe Republic Police of this event and request that they allow us our constitutional right to walk through the streets of Zimbabwe freely and without fear. We know Zimbabweans to be people of compassion and that members of the police force have mothers who are capable of imagining and feeling our pain. Our children are hungry, our men are angry and we can no longer comfort them. Help us to sow love where there is hatred - this is the work of a mother!

Those unable to attend but wish to express their solidarity can donate towards organising costs in cash or in kind. Petrol for mobility is our major need.

For more information, please contact Jenni (+263) 11 213 885 (Byo) or Gertrude (+263) 11 411 842 (Harare)

Matron needed urgently

Is there somebody out there who is finding it hard to make ends meet and can't afford the rent?

A kind and warm hearted lady is needed to fill the position as Matron/housekeeper at the Barbara Burrell Home for the Blind in Bulawayo.

The position offers a flat and includes all meals and laundry. There are 14 very nice elderly residents which enables the Centre to be run as a home rather than an institution. The applicant will also need to have a drivers license.

MUSIC BY MOONLIGHT - WEEK-END 13th to 15th JUNE, 2003

Can you imagine sitting under a full moon, with a glass of wine in your hand and listening to the music of members of the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra, the well-known Trio Conbrio ñ whilst in the background elephants are splashing at a water-hole in Hwange National Park!!! National Parks Main Camp has put together this most innovative and exciting week-end for you to experience the magic of full moon, beautiful music and wonderful wildlife. The week-end begins on the evening of Friday 13th June after your check-in at Hwange National Park, Main Camp, or any of the fine safari lodges surrounding the Park. You will be welcomed with traditional marimba music and lively dancing from the Main Camp school group. Drinks are available from the bar and an excellent dinner menu is served at the Waterbucks Restaurant.

On Saturday morning lie in, take a morning walk with one of the experienced guides or drive into this famous Park and look for animals such as elephants, giraffe, zebra, warthog, sable and if your lucky even a pride of lions. At lunchtime back at Main Camp there is plenty of time to socialise and enjoy light classical music by Trio Conbrio at Waterbucks Head plus a special performance by the very talented, conservation drama group, Miombo. This group performs plays written to spread the conservation message by means of mime, song and dance. The afternoon is free to explore the Park, perhaps take a drive down to the Kennedy vlei and sit by the waterhole.

Saturday evening is the highlight of the week-end and begins with a moon-light drive into the Park at 7pm to your theatre at Nyamandhlovu game-viewing platform. Informal seating with evocative lamp-light has been arranged below the platform or safari operators may bring their open vehicles and clients can view from the vehicles. Trio Conbrio will be playing a full hour of well-known light classical pieces including the beautiful Out of Africa theme. Bring your picnic dinner and while you eat and drink enjoy the music. This is the first time that music has ever played in the open under the moonlight in the Park, so thanks to the innovation of National Parks, you can be part of this piece of history. To add to the evening there will also be a special performance by the Miombo choir.

There will be time at the end of the performance to quietly observe the wildlife drinking at Nyamandhlovu pan before it is time to again drive through the Park back to Main Camp. At all times your safety is paramount and throughout the performance armed National Park scouts will be patrolling the area.

After a leisurely breakfast on Sunday morning there is time for game viewing in the park, perhaps a drive to the platform at Guvalala. Trio Conbrio have kindly offered to give a second recital in front of the Waterbucks Head restaurant from 12:30. This gives an opportunity to all those who were unable to get into the Park last night, especially children and young people from the surrounding area, to appreciate both the instruments and the sound of classical music.

  • Date: From 7pm Friday 13th June to Sunday 15th June

  • Venue: Main Camp, Hwange National Park
