Hello Zimbabwe ! from the Wellington Boot in N.Z. !! Well as you know we've been here just over 3 years now and every step has been a battle. I was working for Youth Suicide line in Auckland and then was offered a job at the local radio station in Christchurch in the South Island. I took over as editor for the radio news-desk and then went on to "talkback" at night which is huge here. Talkback radio must be the most debilitating radio I have ever been involved in. Most of the callers you get are so negative and bitchy. It's just amazing how people can moan here when basically none them know what a hard time is. I am at present finishing off my NZ qualifications for teaching up to Intermediate school. We have a nice home in Redwood, a quiet suburb in the North of Christchurch. Our front goes out on to an open area park where the children play after school and at weekends. Very green and extremely clean! Khayla (my grand daughter ) walks approximately 100 metres to her school, which is very handy. Khayla will be 8 in September and is in her third year at school. She is a bonnie wee lass, long blonde hair, a sunny disposition and very bright. She is doing brilliantly at school and has just been assessed at the top of her year with the reading ability of a 10 to 11 year old. (Maybe my love of literature hasn't been wasted) Alex has found it more difficult to adjust. She misses her home and friends very much, as do Alex has done an Advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism, and is also doing her computer levels 2 and 3, she is also working. All of that keeps her a very busy girl. It's not always greener on the other side of the fence and life here is very different to what we enjoyed in Zim. There is a future here, a bright future for youngsters! And I guess that's important. But not a day passes that I don't think of home and my friends in Zim. Some days I even wish I could just get on a flight and return. I long to get in the car and drive to the Matopos, or just smell the rains, hear the cry of a fish eagles. I even miss the smells of Africa! Do you think I should return and go into POLITICS too.... we'd make a formidable pair!!!!!!!!! grin! As I head towards my 60th birthday in August I realise that it won't be long before I'm a pensioner!!!!!!!! That should make you grin!! I think one of the most difficult things I have had to deal with is the deaths of people I love in Zimbabwe. Friends that have died and no time to say goodbye! I have found that so difficult Margie, you will never know! Some of the names you missed in your wanderings down memory land of RBC/ZBC days were Toni Fairfield...with all the hair, she was on Radio Jac and news, Trish Johns who is now in Perth, well known for her news reading and Radio Jac! Mike Mills, Kevin Rawnsley, John Batwell, Darryl Insley, all voices from the past hey! I keep in touch with Jilly Baker and Trish and also hear all the news about Geoff Aitkins. He is now 76! God how time flies! Love Noreen (I have Noreens e mail address if anyone would like it ) I really enjoyed your 'Before DSTV' section of the last MM. It brought so many very pleasant memories flooding back. it's nice to wallow in the past every now & again, it's certainly no crime! I thought I'd share a few of my memories as well..... Remember 'foofie slides'? & how one's mum thought they were so dangerous (they were actually!). Summer days by the pool (or Borrow Street if you & your mates didn't have one), doing 'belly flops' knowing there was enough water to fill up the pool.... Eating Greengage or Cherry Lollies & getting into a mess because they always melted before you'd eaten them... Mr Maroukis at Maxies Hillside shop letting us have liquorice strips with 2 cents off 'cause we didn't have enough.... buying second hand Beano's, Spiderman comics & Archie & Jughead & being grateful as anything..... when you called your friends' parents 'uncle' & 'auntie'..... how it always seemed to pelt down at one o'clock just as you were setting off for home from school & getting drenched in minutes... a nice hot lunch waiting when you arrived in your bedraggled state.... Fishing at Hillside Dams & never catching a thing except for a old boot..... Watching Ian Warren & Mike Westcott's antics on Sat night TV...... listening to similar between Martin Locke & Geoffrey Atkins on Friday morning General Service..... Sally Donaldson & 'Forces Requests'...... the pleasures of listening to Radio Montrose (of which you were a part!) while struggling with homework left too late.... the disappointment of Radio Jacaranda when it reached us!! Walking through the bush (which was everywhere!) & getting blackjacks all over you..... blowing dandelions & wishing for luck..... wondering why Uncle Ken was acting so 'silly' after that extra Lion Lager..... Great puddings your Mom made at home - Vinegar pudding, fridge cake, trifles (except for the 'yuck' part at the bottom!)....... how the Imperial freezer always seemed brimful of food & went on forever, the pantry full of Colcom hams & assorted tins.... 'Midnight Feasts' including the last bar of Toblerone from you last trip Down South......& of course our special treat - Vienna Schnitzel rolls from Fritz with the tray attached to the side of your car!! I could go on (well I have actually!) but your article helped to trigger off an avalanche of good memories. Keep up the good work Margaret & all the best to you & yours, Darrell BEAUTIFUL PEDIGREED, REGISTERED PERSIAN KITTENS SECOND TIME AROUND I have a shop called "Second Time Around" in which I buy and sell used goods and sell on commission. Main Camp, which is the venue for this special week-end, and the surrounding area, are home to an excellent variety of birds including waders, storks, song-birds and raptors. Activities will take part in a number of differing habitats from Acacia bush, Teak forest to mixed bushland, all on Kalahari sand with water from pumped pans. The week-end will cater for bird watchers of all levels, from beginners to the more experienced. Various walks and talks will be given by well-known ornithologists Dr Peter Mundy, Ngoni Chiweshi and Main Camps resident guide/birder Elias Banda throughout the week-end. Walks will be organised to take best advantage of time, season, habitat and bird species. Morning walks will be in the Main Camp area around the Acacia bush to look for Titbabbler, Burntnecked Eremomela, Violeteared Waxbills, Cisticolas etc. Mid-morning to midday will be the time to drive with the experts either to Nyamandhlovu platform or Kennedy 1 to look for grassland species and raptors. On Saturday evening we have special permission to drive into the Park on this full-moon night to look for nightjars, plovers, owls and other nocturnal species. Upon entering the Park at night each car will be given a small radio so you can keep in touch with the ornithologist in the lead car and learn more about the nocturnal birds sighted. World-renowned falconer Ron Hartley will be here to talk specifically on the raptors of the Main Camp area and he will also be bringing with him a number of Falcons and small raptors. Birders will have an up-close opportunity to see these birds and to witness the art of falconry with the birds showing the speed and finesse with which they fly. All birds are fitted with radio collars and Ron will be explaining just how these are put on the bird and how they function. A full week-end of activities is planned so you can take advantage to learn from one of the experts or just drive yourself into the Park and do your own bird-watching. To add further interest to the week-end there will be a number of small prizes for the most birds seen – a complete check-list of the Main Camp area will be handed out at Reception upon check-in. To lighten the week-end the Main Camp Primary School Marimba Band and Dance Group will be performing as will the very talented new conservation drama group, Miombo. This group performs plays written to spread the conservation message by means of mime, song and dance. Please note there are no extra costs for these activities, although both dance groups would appreciate donations. It is suggested that visitors drive to Hwange Main Camp on Friday so they are in place for Saturday morning activities.
Note: Several other special week-ends are planned; Symphony Under the Stars 14th & 15th June; Tree Identification 13th & 14th September; Art In The Park 11th & 12th October.
