JUDO first Saturday of every month, come and be trained by the BMAA judo fight team for free* What a fantastic start to the year for our judo team. At the end of last year, on our behalf, Debbi Jeans (your national Judo coach) proposed BMAA for a full set of competition Judo mats to be supplied by JAZ (The Judo Association of Zimbabwe), her proposal was a success. Because of this BMAA can now triple the amount of Judokas (fighters) on the mat at any one time, and hope to do so this year. Under our team captain Dusty Smith, our judo fight team will head off to Harare this month to meet the teams there and attend the Judo Association of Zimbabwe's AGM, then fight off with the other clubs for national ranking points. This is the first time the provinces have come together like this for as long as anyone can remember. A true sign of sporting progress. We would like to thank Debbi Jeans, Pat Warren and all those at JAZ for their unconditional support, and we hope to provide great fighters for Debbi and Pat to work with to create one of the best Judo teams in Africa. The passion and leadership exists at JAZ to achieve this. BOXING The Thursday boxing session, is slowly going from strength to strength, the new talent in the room is showing lots of heart and evolving fast and I'm hoping for some good technical results in Februarys end of month sparring. The guys and girls have worked hard on the their footwork this year and because of this are getting off good combinations and managing their energy levels well. KRAV MAGA Naught, to extreme violence in the blink of an eye* We replaced the Friday MMA class with the Krav Maga, purely because those who did attend the MMA, didn't really want to put the work in and the class became fickle. (I'll say it again for the wannabe, There are no short cuts in fighting.) The Krav Maga is now a full class with a waiting list and enjoyed by all that attend. That said, we have a window for a second class, please ring for details. JUNIORS, KIDS. NIPPERS, LIGHTEES, Parents! We are currently looking to re-establish junior classes (ages 5 to 15) for both boxing and Judo, but all too often they clash with school events. If you're interested in your child learning one of these great martial arts, please contact us so we can place a set lesson that fits around these schedules. As a father of three, I have paid out loads in the past, in lessons and gear, only to find out two weeks later they don't want to do it anymore, don't panic, all junior lessons are free for the first two months and gear provided, if after that time they enjoy it enough to ask you if they can come back, you can take out one of our junior memberships. 3) Roses And Raspberries HILLSIDE POLICE STATION On Monday 27 February at around 4.00 pm my son was approached by a uniformed officer at Hillside shops, while I got out to the get the paper. The engine was running and he was not obstructing any traffic. The policeman asked my son for his ID and Learners Licence, which he had left at home. They then detained him (he is 16 years old) and instructed him to sit, while I drove back home to retrieve his ID and licence. On return I was asked to pay a fine and they threatened my son with 12 hour detention for not having his ID on his person. The policemen were drunk, with a strong smell of alcohol on their breath. The Act reads that it is my right to produce the licence within seven days. This was not adhered to. Something needs to be done about our police force. CS Press statement Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) members have collected 99 974 petition signatures calling on a reform of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation and reduction of licensing fees for areas that only have one television channel. Since Monday seven separate protests involving 680 members have been conducted in Bulawayo where petition signatures were handed over to local Post offices which are the paying point for the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation. The post offices visited were Tshabalala; Sekusile in Nketa; Mpopoma; Mzilikazi; Entumbane; Magwegwe and also the Main post office in town. The post offices were selected to be a focal point of the protest due to the armed and dangerous offices of the state broadcaster in Montrose suburb of Bulawayo. Most post office managers received the petitions and indicated that they would pass on the message on but one manager referred the activist to Nonceba Mkandla at Montrose Studios who is apparently in charge of ZBC Bulawayo. WOZA call on all Zimbabweans residing outside Harare to join the call for a lower licensing fee and for a total reform of programming. It is with much sadness that my Dad, Ponny (Martin Herbert) Schmulian, recently passed away in Bulawayo on 2nd February 2012. We (his children, Jack, Redel, Joanne and families) have just been in Bulawayo (from the USA, SA and UK) for the funeral and to be with my Mom, Pat, who lives in Bulawayo. I have to say that each time I visit Bulawayo I am amazed at the friendliness and kindness of the people there. We have experienced circumstances when complete strangers have put themselves out for us, from worrying moments in car breakdowns to just when guidance was needed. But with this visit in particular - I cannot tell you how moved we have been by the kindness and support that we received while we were there. We are extremely grateful to Lynn Martin, an amazing lady, who was with my Mom when my Dad died and gently and so professionally helped her through a most traumatic event - she is not just a brilliant and experienced nurse but she also understands old school empathetic nursing care - the sort of care that is making a Zimbabwe nurse now the most sort after carer in UK! Hylton Solomon was extraordinary. He took over all the administration from the outset and hand held us every step of the way - with great kindness. We wanted to say thanks to Marge Macdonald for her friendship and consolation to my Mom and Temba Sibanda, my Dad s partner, who has been for many years, a solid brick and friend to the family. And to Harry Schmeiser, Rifka Solomon and the entire Chevra Kadisha who gave their time out of the goodness of their hearts - a big thank you from us all. 7) Guardian Angels, Donations and Wish Lists Bulawayo Island Hospice offers palliative care and support to all terminally ill patients throughout the city of Bulawayo and its surrounding areas. This service is confidential, secular and free of charge. The number of patients in our care has increased and currently we have 153 'Active' patients on our register. Despite all the challenges we face we still manage to try and make a difference in the lives of those needing our services. As the month of March approaches, we look back and reflect how the past year faired, and most nonprofits - including Island Hospice Services - start to focus on the year ahead of us. Island Hospice Service does good work and labors diligently to improve the lives of those who suffer from cancer and other terminal illnesses, but we cannot do this without support from our friends. Please take a moment to reflect on the importance of our work and consider a gift.
