SPAS AND PAINTED TOENAILS

SheHoo Must Sing and I were treated by Daddy to an afternoon at a Spa in Sandton as an addendum to the birthday gift ! As you may know, the word spa is the acronym for salus per aqua, Latin meaning "good health through water." It was an absolute revelation to a Third Worlder especially one with socialist leanings !!

But what a glorious few hours we had. The Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg is quite the swankiest place you have ever seen. There were no less than four gloved and morning suited security guards between the heavily fortified gate and the parking garage, and then a sleek merc arrived to collect us at the garage to drive us the fifty meters or so to the spa. Even the gardeners seemed to be dressed Saville Row !!

My jaw was hanging at the beautifully elegant decor and SheHoo Must Sing, who is more worldly than I, told me to stop gawping and look as though I was born to such magnificence !! SheHoo Must Sing was obviously born to this Babylonian Lifestyle, took it in her stride and strode through the foyer as though she owned the establishment !! I ambled along behind her trying to maintain a "To the Manor Born" haughty sneer !!

We were ushered into this tranquil sanctuary of beauty and cosseting, by the most beautiful woman you have ever seen, all the while welcoming us and discussing in low svelte tones about our promised "Treatment Journey" . I hoped and prayed I would look like her when I emerged several hours later !!

Mint tea was served in china cups while we filled in a dossier more comprehensive than one is faced with at a doctors surgery and we were ushered into a dressing room, where we had to "bare all" and slip on pre-warmed thick-pile, fluffy cotton gowns and slippers. The Saxon Spa Signature Therapies are many but we had opted for a Swedish Massage for SheHoo and a Deep Tissue Muscle Massage for my aching bones.

The room I was taken to boasted dimmed seductive lighting, the soothing scent of jasmine filled the air and I was transported to a place I had never been before. A compilation of pampering and bullying as this diminutive little lady pummeled and cudgeled my not inconsiderable girth into a quivering mass of jelly.

Reflexology followed while SheHoo Must Sing did the facial thing !! I was not about to allow these elegant and beautiful ladies to get to grips with my many years of harsh climatically induced wrinkles on my face - Oh No !! Feeling woozy and dozy after my body bashing, I was led gently to the steaming aromatic hot rock pool, where more self indulgence ensued as they plunged me from hot to cold and I could even feel those excess pounds of adipose falling like butter off my ample thighs and buttocks !!

We opted out of the mud wrestling, oh sorry I mean the mineral mud bath, I wondered vaguely how they changed the mud between various bodies !! The beautiful ladies assured me that their mud is high in mineral salts, curative properties, CO2, argonite, calcite and trace iron deposits," The mud was from a river valley formed by granite tectonic blocks, which created a rift valley. I hesitated to tell her that our water in Bulawayo looks like that frequently !

Words fell from the beautifully sculptured lips of the masseurs like " sound therapy, free flow, ritual and holistic". The spa offered an abundance of pampering such as Rhythm Massage, Rain of the Gods, Sensory Spa and Tasting Evenings, and Aroma Hot Stone Massage. The promise to return was beguiling, the only pre cursor being if HeeHoo's bank balance could maintain this style of life !!

Cosseted and coddled were were led off to champagne flutes and salmon canapes served on a silver salver, and with heads swatted in cashmere wraps, to a row of languorous luxurious sun loungers, where more torture ensued. SheHoo had recently returned from Mogadishu so her feet probably needed this foot buffering and bashing !! I am ticklish so it was not a very soothing experience, I must have looked like a writing worm, clad in my cuddly white robe as I jiggled and giggled through the agony of having ones feet rasped and razored until they felt like little soft baby feet. My toes were then embossed with bright cherry red lacquer, something that would possibly have been detected on Lady Gaga's toes !! And a similar fate awaited my hands and nails !!

The other spa clients were obviously used to this life of decadence and SheHoo Must Sing quietly handed me the brochure opened at the page entitled "Spa Etiquette" - obviously I was gaping again !!

Hi Ladies
My name is Bronwyn Palmer, I'm from Harare and am planning a trip down to byo to do a week of Brazilian Cacau Keratin Treatment. I will be starting on saturday 27th August 2011 8:00am sharp till Thursday 1st August. If I have an excess of ladies I will stay until the3rd August 2011. I need a minimum of 10 ladies to be able to cover my costs of coming down. I will also be able to do a few ladies, gents and children's cuts between the Brazilian treatments.
The treatment takes between 2hrs 30mins to 3hrs for each lady depending on the length of the hair. The longer the hair the longer it takes. Short hair will be $200, medium to long $250-$300.. After you have read the information below, and if you have any further questions, please give me a call0773247721. Other wise please call and book with me between sat 27/08/11 and 01/09/11.
BRASIL CACAU KERATIN TREATMENT
by Cadiveu is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment available. Authentic and genuine Brazilian Keratin Treatment. MADE IN BRAZIL. BRASIL CACAU removes 95% of frizz or curl on natural or chemically treated hair. It effectively rebuilds hair damaged by excessive chemical services. BRASIL CACAU improves the condition of the hair by adding a protective Keratin layer around the hair shaft thus eliminating frizz, smoothing the hair cuticles and enhancing your colour. The end result is straighter, smoother, incredibly shinier, stronger, frizz free hair, which is more manageable and humidity resistant.
NO HARSH CHEMICALS.
It can be applied over coloured, highlighted, bleached, chemically straightened or curled hair and assists in strengthening and adding amazing shine and control to any hair condition. Don't be forced to wait 72 hours...! Our results are instant! Unlike other keratin treatments, the minute you leave the salon, you can wash your hair, wear a pony tail, use clips and pins, go to gym or swim. Your hair will be straighter, smooth, frizz free and extremely radiant.
Q. How long will the BRASIL CACAU treatment last? A. Three to four months provided the BRASIL CACAU range of aftercare products are used. BRASIL CACAU treatment is a cumulative treatment. The more often you have the treatment applied, the healthier your hair will be and the longer the results will last. Q. What happens to my hair after the BRASIL CACAU treatment is at the end of its life cycle? A. Your hair will revert back to its original state about 12 weeks prior to the treatment. It will be in a better and stronger condition than before the treatment. Q. How will my hair look after the BRASIL CACAU treatment? A. It will be much shinier, full of volume, effortless to manage, stronger, straighter, healthier and frizz free. Humidity will no longer be a problem. Q. Will BRASIL CACAU make my hair dead straight? A. That depends on the type of hair you have. If you have straight, frizzy hair, the treatment will eliminate the frizz and give the hair incredible shine. If your hair is wavy, BRASIL CACAU will make your hair naturally straight and healthy. If your hair is very curly, the treatment will remove most of the frizz, enhancing the natural curl or wave. if you have any further questions, please give me a call 0773247721. Other wise please call and book with me between sat 27/08/11 and 01/09/11.

The American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas explores Mahler's life and works in a documentary with "a wealth of solidly researched detail that is both musically provocative and visually stimulating... he brings Mahler's music to life in a way that makes even the novice appreciate its astounding unity and diversity" (BBC Music Magazine - five-star rating). Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
GLADIATOR
Thursday 1 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. - N.B. time!
"Impressive tale from the days of the Roman Empire with Russell Crowe as a dedicated general who refuses to transfer his loyalty to the new emperor Commodius and suffers the consequences, winding up as a gladiator. Crowe is so good in his Academy Award-winning performance - and his character so compelling... the spectacle is grand" [Maltin's 2011 Movie Guide]. Admission: $3.00 [free to film members]
SPARTACUS
Thursday 8 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. - N.B. time!
"Epic saga with Kirk Douglas as a rebellious slave who leads a crusade for freedom against the forces of the Roman Empire. There are staggering battle scenes and delicious performances from Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and especially Peter Ustinov, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his scene-stealing work" (Maltin's 2011 Movie Guide). The film won three other Oscars and also stars Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis and Herbert Lom. Admission: $3.00 [free to film members]
KHACHATURIAN: SPARTACUS - BALLET
Friday 9 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. - with supper interval.
"Internationally acclaimed as the greatest male dancer of his generation, Carlos Acosta stars as the rebel slave in the most spectacular of all Soviet ballets. Filmed in Paris after triumphant performances in Moscow and London, the Bolshoi's classic production presents the Cuban star at the height of his physical and dramatic powers, the greatest Spartacus of our time" [Jenny Gilbert]. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
LESLIE HOWARD (PIANO)
Thursday 15 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Leslie Howard celebrates the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth on 22 October 1811 with several of his works as well as music by another great composer-pianist, Sergei Rachmaninov: Liszt: Variations on a theme of J.S.Bach: "Weinen Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" Liszt: Sarabande and Chaconne on themes from Handel's Opera "Almira" Liszt: Romancero Espagnol
Rachmaninov: Three piano pieces from November 1917 Rachmaninov: Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op.36 (original version, 1913) The performance of the Romancero Espagnol will be the first anywhere in Africa! It is a 20- minute fantasy - of enormous difficulty even by Liszt's standards - based on traditional Spanish themes.which was only recently discovered and has been edited for performance by Leslie himself. The rest of the programme features two of Liszt's lesser know pieces derived respectively from music by Bach and Handel. After the interval come the last three short pieces that Rachmaninov wrote before he left Russia for ever and his magnificent Second Sonata, not often heard but a work to rival the popular piano concertos. This concert should be one of the year's highlights, if not the highlight... Admission: $10.00 / $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

3) Roses And Raspberries
ROSES
From Margaret Bernard of Pet Hilton a big thank you to Air Health International and Dave Riley of Masca for arranging the best possible medical treatment in Johannesburg - private ward in Sunninghill Hospital, and two weeks after care at a ten star step-down facility - Orchard Lodge. (www.orchardlodge.co.za)
email - vanessa@orchardlodge.co.za tel: Jhb (011 483 3743).

Once again, big bunches of roses to the Wimax/Econet guys, particularly Nyasha and David at Ascot, for their fantastic back-up service. Certainly more than "world class" as they respond after hours, public hols and even in their own personal holiday time!! They have driven out to my home on several occasions and spent almost 2 hours one evening sorting out problems! And roses to most of the Econet team for pleasant and helpful support and service generally.

But, raspberries to Econet for poor technical application, especially recently and particularly after I found that the cheaper 3G/Buddie had priority over the Wimax/4G and worked far better and more cheaply! It's very irritating, to put it mildly, to find that you are paying more and up-front for a service that is much less effective than the cheaper version (even if the back-up service is special)!
R.H.

A huge thank you to Mr Basil Steyn for the donation of a microscope to our clinic.

"From Shirley Pornes, Gweru Zimbabwe".
We are appealing to all you Animal lovers out there. I have been assisting the SPCA Gweru Branch on a Voluntary basis for +-4 years now. We receive animals in distress from abused pets to confiscated donkeys, goats and cattle to mention a few. The SPCA has a few good supporters I.e. Butchers, Bakeries (Who donate stale bread), Vegetable shops which donate cabbages, the SPCA is ever so grateful for the support, no matter how big or small as these unfortunate animals would certainly be in dire straight were it not for their undying support. The SPCA is finding it more and more difficult. We are appealing for donations of basically anything to assist these unfortunate animals I.e. Funds, Blankets, Foods, dip, carpets, old clothing, toys etc. The vet in Gweru Dr Gumbo has given me his endless support treating and operating on the animals, without him we'd be lost. We'd like to help him in return this appeal is a bit big but we in need of anaesthetic and materials for dogs and cats. We receive so many dogs with mange, we use the injection IVERMECTIN, and donations will be greatly appreciated. However big or small these will be sincerely appreciated. I am so deeply committed to these animals. It causes a lot of pain to see some of the cases brought in.
Thank you, Shirley.

"SPCA strive to assist animals that need very special care due to advancing age, illness and/or emotional trauma. These animals are many times overlooked as adoption candidates. Most potential adopters want a healthy, "easy" pet that requires normal care, but nature and life are not always so kind.
SPCA Gweru , assist most animals sight unseen, hence their medical history is a mystery. We are only able to help others when we have the financial means & caretakers available to do so. We continue to try to get each one adopted, which can be weeks, months, years and sometimes forever. Our independent caretakers are dedicated to providing the best quality of care and the most nurturing of environments. Our mission is for "All who enter, leave happy and as healthy as possible". In order to ensure that our goal is met, these special animals need long term management and financial assistance. Special food, medical bills, medications and lab tests can be very expensive. We need help in order to continue to help these caretakers, provide the best quality care possible. You may not be able to adopt one of these "special needs" pets, but any assistance you can give, financial or other, will not go unforgotten.
Please consider what you would need if you were in a similar helpless position. At this time of their lives, they are totally dependent upon the help of others in order to sustain a full and rewarding life. We need financial help to defray costly medical bills and special foods. Please let us all remember to help those creatures, who sadly fall by the wayside in the sea of endless homeless animals. They ALL deserve the best. Thank you and please remember that donations are greatly appreciated. Do something in your community to help, if you sincerely care because this is where the animals need us most, FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES!"
Today this minute countless numbers of innocent little animals are suffering dreadfully only "YOU" can make life a bit better for these unfortunate animals. Remember your pet is part of your family they need your love and support. Xx

APPEAL
72 year old Mr J is in desperate need of a hip replacement operation.
He lives in a retirement home in Bulawayo, has a small pension and still works part-time. Even selling his old car would not pay for the operation and would deprive him of much needed income. His family are unable to pay for this operation which is quoted at $9,910 of which medical aid will cover $4510 leaving a shortfall of $5,400.
Bulawayo Help Network alone is unable to raise this amount for one person and is appealing to your overstretched generosity for contributions.
Mr J is in great pain and often feels he can no longer go on. Can you help us, help him?

THE SEAN LABUSCAGNE CANCER TRUST
2012 CANCER CALENDAR - Support, Celebrate & Remember
In early 2011, THE SEAN LABUSCAGNE CANCER TRUST was created. The fight against cancer is never a short one and the mandate of the Trust is primarily to ensure that Sean succeeds in his particular battle but it also aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of cancer within our community and to show support to other families affected by the disease.
The Sean Labuscagne Cancer Trust is embarking on a 2012 Cancer Calendar which hopes to put a face (or should we say 'faces') to this disease by asking cancer sufferers, survivors and even those who have passed away, to be featured in the calendar under the month that represents their particular fight. Eg September = Lymphoma & Leukemia, Thyroid, Gynecologic, Uterine/Endometrial, Ovarian, Prostate & Childhood Cancers
SUPPORT - highlight your own struggle to lend support to other people who are also fighting.
CELEBRATE - give people hope by celebrating your victory.
REMEMBER - Honour a friend or family member that lost the battle but who is not forgotten.
We plan to hold a photo-shoot in September for everyone who is able to attend but will also accept photographs from those of you who live far away as well as old photographs of loved ones who have passed away and are being commemorated. We aim high and hope to have the calendar on sale throughout Zimbabwe as well as in Botswana, The UK, Australia ... basically anywhere and everywhere that there are Zimbabweans who have been affected by cancer and wish to participate and support.
Should you be interested please send your details : Name, contact number, email, type of cancer and status to one of the following : Ceri - 0712 621 723 Lin - 0772 269 338 Janine - 0772 417 931 Kirsty - 0712 630 591 suburbs@netconnect.co.zw lin@bullredfarming.com mommydell@gmail.com kirstyfl@mweb.co.zw

HELP REQUIRED
Can any one let us have some background information on Mabukuwene in Burnside. The National Trust of Zimbabwe (the owner) is wanting to revive this park for the enjoyment of Bulawayo residents. However we need to know more about the history of the place, the origin of the structures and any little titbits that will be included in our project profile and ultimately in a small historical display to be erected there. Who is operating the place? The Trust has no idea any more. Any comments much appreciated.

KHS Final Clean Up
The work at the Khumalo Hockey Stadium is moving forward at an unbelievable pace now. Both pitches have been completed now and the Zimbabwe Men's side has already had a practise match there at the weekend. The grandstand is being re-painted and refurbished, along with the kiosk, light towers, etc. It is heartwarming to see what has been achieved in a relatively short space of time and is testament to the hard work put in by Ministry of Public Works, City Council, the Bulawayo schools (CBC, Girls College, Petra, Whitestone, Falcon) and the many volunteers who had been helping out.
This coming weekend the Interprovincial Tournament is going to be held at the KHS, with the Zimbabwe schools and senior teams competing as well to get match practise. Games being on Saturday 27th. And then we have the AQO the following week from 2nd September.
Over the past couple of weeks we have had lots of contractors working at the stadium and there is the inevitable deposit of rubble and rubbish. A lot of rubbish as waste material left by the contractors has accumulated over the past two weeks so we need to go around and clean up the mess. Please could you come out to the stadium from 8am to 12pm on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August. I would like to see ALL hockey players there - as this stadium is for your benefit - and for the younger ones please drag your parents down too!!! You will need to bring bin bags, along with brooms, spades and if you can wheel barrows. If you can't come personally please at the very least donate your gardener for the morning. This will be a good opportunity to be part of this project and to see the work that has already been done.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing you down there.

LETTER FROM AUSTRALIA
I left Zimbabwe 8 years ago to go walk about in Australia, I have reached the horizon and all I can see in front of me is Zimbabwe.
I arrived in Australia with my eyes Partially shut, all I could see were pristine beaches manicured gardens, a police presence and the assurance of good health and schools.
My wonderful wife on the other hand had her eyes wide open, she quickly learned that you had to be careful you did not step on a syringe when walking on the beach, you spent all your free time tending the garden, the police were really there to curb very unsociable behavior, you had to have medical insurance that only covered Major issues no dental or optical and if you are not part of the legal fraternity the small print would be a mind field. On the other hand we must be grateful that every Australian has public medical aid, unfortunately if you have a problem you would have to wait for months to be seen by a specialist or many hours at emergency units, unless it was critical . With all due respects the schools leave a lot to be desired My eldest son who was privileged to be educated in Zimbabwe knew his time tables at the age of 8 he spoke, read and wrote perfect English, unfortunately my youngest son has not had the same success. Despite the resources the schools have including a teachers aid for every teacher my opinion is schools in Zimbabwe out strip any public school in Australia. And if you wanted to send your child to a private school as a better option where sport was offered as part of the curriculum, you would have to cancel Christmas, have three jobs and give up gardening on weekends. You would have to earn a good salary to be able to afford dining out regularly and fresh Fruit and Vegetables come at a cost Bananas sell for $15.00 a Kg This is so significant that some economists have blamed the increase in inflation on the cost of Bananas.
I am 53 I was given the opportunity to buy a business I am grateful to the wonderful people who gave me this opportunity, I figured that owning my own business would buy me freedom and the prospect of making more money. I must say that the business has been an overwhelming success however it has come at a cost I now work 60 hours a week I come home at the end of the day confronted with chores. I am not complaining as this is a labor of love, I Play golf once every 3 months I have been fishing twice since we arrived in Perth and no I have not sat on the side lines at a school rugby match because the school that my son attends does not offer competitive sport.
There is good and bad in every country, it's a tradeoff. I have no regrets coming to Australia. I am grateful for all that this country has given me and my family. I am grateful to the people who taught me what I know now that I would not have learned if I stayed. I sympathise with the people who Lived through the hardship and turmoil in Zimbabwe.
But one thing I know for certain we are coming home, the grass may be greener on the other side but remember, if it only rains once a year, it will get dry.
Regards
Sharif Jassat

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon:
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34- storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
