Voices From Our Glosious Past

He was a Beautiful chocolate Easter Bunny.

He was about six inches tall (thats about 9 centimeters those metricated amongst us !) He had a bright green jacket, red trousers and he was gamboling in a field of daisies !! He was encased in an elegant firm plastic case, the perfect gift for my niece for Easter Sunday.

BUT....... he cost $5230.00 !!

Now we are not poor by any stretch of the imagination, but my middle class up bringing forbade me to even contemplate his purchase. Translated into US dollars he was a veritable snip, translated in pound sterling, he was a giveaway I stood and argued with myself, but I still could not bring myself to buy him.

Would you have been able to buy him ? Why did I covert this stunning Easter Bunny so much ? How could I possibly justify spending over five thousand dollars on a chocolate Easter bunny which would be gone in four or five mouthfuls !!

I would have had to sneak him home and surreptitiously remove his price tag before my staff saw what he had cost !! And so I tenderly put him back on the supermarket shelf, cast an eye morosely at the empty bread shelf, and went out without an Easter gift for my niece.

Would you have been able to buy him ?

AGE HAS IT'S MOMENTS !!

I have had the very sad task of disposing of the property of three very special people in my life, and as sad as the tasks have been I have never ceased to be amazed at what some folk consider important. This is the "throw away age" no doubt about that, "if it's broken trash it and buy a new one " is the modern maxim, but the folk who lived through the Second World War would turn in their graves (?) if they could hear us say that.

He Who Must Be Obeyed Instantly, (you may notice that I have changed his title) has gone fishing, one of those Male Bonding Experiences that are so vital to the survival of men of a certain age group !!

So I embarked upon an exercise that has been nagging at me for a few months now, sorting out the bits and bobs of an old and very dear friend who died not so long ago.

Most of it was easy, OUT !!! There are always plenty of folk who will snap up anything and everything, so OUT it all went ....... ruthlessly ......

Furniture, clothing, capets and curtains all disposed of to worthy causes and worthy people, but then I was left with the clutter. Now every home has clutter I am the first to admit, I already feel sorry for the poor souls who have to dispose of my clutter one day, (hopefully in the not too distant future !!)

But there is after all, clutter and ...well...... clutter.

I mean, why does one have to keep a whole mayonnaise bottle full of old watch straps ?

All broken, all turning green with age, all totally useless, but there they were, someone's special treasures !!

Bottles after bottle of nails, screws and bolts, jars of washers of ever conceivable size and thickness, old spark plugs, old thermostats, old fuses, packets of plastic thingamajigs, bottles of rubber watchamacallits !!

An entire Havana cigar box full of springs and coils and twirlys !!

A beautiful meranti box full of patches and ratchets and rings !!

Nineteen broken clocks, fourteen broken watches, twenty three old gramophone needles, and countless odd pipes and poles and pipettes. !!

There was the dearest little tin named "Ayrton's heart Shape Bismuth indigestion Tablets " and these, it appears are "palatable and perfectly harmless and may be taken in the way of a sweetmeat " according to the instructions, but why keep a whole tin full of of useless tics, tacs and toes I ask you ?

Old aerials , old hinges, old bits of rubbish that you and I would have thrown out long ago.......

But.... I hesitate to say...... that I know exactly where the clutter collectors are coming from.

Anyone who is good with his hands and loves to fix, repair and mend, has clutter.

Cos how often do you need a little special two centimetre, oblong, 1 mm thingamajig which will be the perfect item to repair whatever it is that you are repairing ?

MORE VOICES FROM THE PAST

I am aghast with shame, I forgot so many fabulous Voices in the last edition of Morning Mirror, Dino reminded me of David Davies from LM Radio, who could forget him !!

My friend John McNeilage from Down Under remembered Evelyn Martin also from LM radio - " I remember clearly getting a birthday wish for my third birthday in their afternoon program four to five PM called Birthday Requests, my grandmother sent it and the song they played was "Green Eyes" those devastating  Green Eyes, the year was 1948, the article actually brought a tear to my eye. Do you remember we used to listen to Simon Templar alias The Saint every week without fail. Them were the days for sure !!!!!!! "

More quotes from aged folk like me -

From Colin H. "Thank you for Mirror 44.  What a wonderful ramble down memory lane!  I remember the voices of Esme Everard and David "Tiger" Davies who were Dj's on LM radio, and so many of the ones you mentioned too.  The kids these days don't know what they missed! "

Marian L. "I enjoyed your article on 'Voices' and have to tell you that I am under 50 and I remember Gerry Wilmot and LM Radio very well. "

...and "I wanted to remind you of Keith Kennedy, he did Lyons Maid Hits of the Week for years too.  My father always referred to him as Salisbury's Oldest Teenager."

From Stan H. "PS Forces Requests was MP3 sharp on a SUNDAY afternoon, starting off as 1 hour then 2 and by 1979 three hours each Sunday."

And of course loads of folk reminded me of Tony Bulling !! What a character !!

FAREWELLS

There have been so many special, precious, valuable people who have left Zimbabwe, so many stories, so many lives changed, shattered, perhaps improved due to our unique "Made in Zimbabwe" strange, ethereal, unreal situation.

You know them, I know them, you will miss them, I will miss them.

And I will miss Judy so much.

Judy Martin, nee Appleby.

A friend to many, many people in Zimbabwe. And Judy will be joining her one time Esigodini farmer husband Colin , in Capetown this month. Judy and I have known each other since the days of pigtails and ponytails.

Judy, you will be sorely missed. You and Colin were an integral part of the amazing close knit Esigodini community. You have worked for the community tirelessly all your adult life.

You have cared for the sick, ministered to the poor, nursed the infirm and nurtured the young.

You have always had a smile, never a frown, I have never heard you condemn, always compliment, never complain, always made light of your problems, which have been vast by anyone's standards.

Judy, my dearest friend, God Speed to you and Colin.

Zimbabwe will be the poorer for your leaving.

SMALLS

STRESS and TENSION?

Back, neck, shoulders, muscular pains, headaches, nervous stomachs, etc…? The therapies I offer can help. All the therapies are gentle and deeply relaxing, non invasive and are performed through clothing.

BOWEN therapy consists of gentle movements, over specific key points, which release blocked energy, allowing maximum healing to take place. Bowen therapy is characterized by 2 min pauses between movements, giving the body time to respond.

REIKI is a very subtle, but powerful form of natural healing. It induces deep relaxation and relieves stress and tension. Reiki is not a religion or belief system, and anyone can do it, providing they have been Initiated by a Reiki Master.

BOWEN/REIKI Combination is the ultimate in Relaxation treatments.

REFLEXOLOGY is a form of healing in which the feet are gently stimulated to promote natural healing.

For any of the above, or Combination treatments, make an appointment with;

HELPLINES

The Harare Helplines were very useful during elections last year, and have been re-activated for YOU and your friends, colleagues, and neighbours.

Two more landline numbers have been added to the Harare Helplines, which now serve the whole of Harare and indeed as much of the country as we can.

This service is provided on a voluntary basis by citizens who are concerned that, in the current volatile situation, other citizens may meet problems or require information which they will try to help with, or may have important information which they want to pass on to others.

Here are all the numbers : please print this out and put it next to your telephone, carry it in your diary or whatever...and pass this message on to spread the Helpline numbers far and wide. Thank you.

"BE ALERT STAY ALERT"

Fuel rip off - You have been fuelled - beware the conman- who offers you fuel at a price - gets your payment then leads you to an office/warehouse/home to collect the fuel and while you wait outside he disappears inside the property never to be seen again.

Window Security - The normal once upon a time more than adequate window burglar bars of round iron are no longer a deterrent to a determined burglar. The burglars now place a crowbar or motor car jack between the bars and prise them apart. It is surprising how small an opening a burglar can get through - 8 inches x 15 inches - 200mm x 400mm.

Ladies - don't walk around covered in jewelry or carrying a handbag especially a large one - you are just asking to have them forcefully taken from you.

HOUSE NEEDED TO RENT

Looking for a three bedroom house - must have a shower as my elderly Mum cannot get in or out of a bath and preferably no swimming pool - in Suburbs, Hillside, Ilanda, Malindela or anywhere else in the low density areas.

It needs to be secure for three dogs therefore fenced or walled. Double Staff quarters.

Change Skill

There is nothing more certain than that the world will continue to change.

Accepting and not resisting this, is the first and most important inner skill in this frenetically changing, modern world. Life tests us every day to see how well we have developed this ability. Equally, there is nothing more real than the inner space within each of us that never ever changes. We may change our thoughts, our feelings, even our sense of who we are, but we fail to visit the unchanging centre of our own self. The ability to be in this inner space, where our peace is found, when all around would prefer chaos and crisis, is the deepest spiritual change skill. It is the eye of the storm, it is the oasis in the desert, it is the place where peace is power. Call in today. You'll be surprised how much it can influence and change everything and everyone around you!

If you get a phone call on your mobile from any person, indicating that he is a company engineer, telling you that they are doing a check on your phone and that you must press #90 or 09# or any other number, END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT PRESSING ANY NUMBER. There is a fraud company on the go using a device, that once you have pressed #90 or 09#, they can access your SIM CARD and make calls from your hand phone at your expense.
