For more information Phone (09) 286603 or 0772 933071" HOCKEY SNIPPETS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION OF ZIMBABWE The African Olympic Qualifier being played in Bulawayo is the second edition of this event as four years ago it was held in Nairobi, Kenya. At that event only the Zimbabwe women participated. This event coincides with the All Africa games, which this year is being held in Maputo, Mozambique. As hockey is not played in Mozambique the sport has not been included on the official programme of the 2011 Africa Games. 3 - The African Hockey Federation has issued the official invitation for the event in Bulawayo, and countries are now responding. Ghana is the first National Association to confirm and they will be sending both a men's and women's team to the tournament. 4 - The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe has confirmed the entry of both the men's and the women's National Hockey Teams. Selection has commenced, and training is well underway as these teams prepare. This will be the first major event for the men since 2003, and for the women since 2007. Both teams failed to make it to Ghana in 2009 for the Africa Cup of Nations. 5 - Representatives of the London 2012 Olympic Games will be visiting Bulawayo to show support for this qualification event. Meanwhile, at the Khumalo Hockey Stadium 1 - The new artificial pitch left Rotterdam, The Netherlands last week on schedule and is now on its way to Bulawayo. 2 - The old pitch has been removed from the playing surfaces of the Khumalo Hockey Stadium. 3 - The grounds have been significantly cleared in advance of preparations for the AOQ. The City of Bulawayo parks department have being very positive and have provided significant support, whilst a number of the local schools have likewise been sending assistance. 3) Roses And Raspberries ROSES A huge bunch of roses to the Musketeers Lodge for making my 60th birthday party a truly wonderful day. Moira took care of everything - from lovely table settings, to the flowers, the delicious food and of course the festive band. I combined my 'bash' with a Vintage and Classic Car Run and invited a few of my special friends from out of town - Vumba, Harare and Chiredzi - and all had a great time. Thank you all very much for everything and to those who gave me such lovely pressies - can't wait to open them all tomorrow - 28th June. Jenny Leach On my return journey home following yet another hectic day in Bulawayo this week, my positive thoughts dwelled on all the businesses in Bulawayo who take a pride in their premises - both the interior and exterior frontage; who keep the noise level inside their premises at a level to allow customers to think; and who employ staff who offer the customer a polite and efficient service. Your contribution towards making a trip to Bulawayo a pleasure instead of an ordeal is greatly appreciated. To the motorists who are courteous on our highways (in this instance - the Bulawayo/Gweru highway) and also remember to dip their headlights when on-coming vehicles dip theirs - you make traveling after a long day more pleasurable.
