JUST TRYING TO BE USEFUL AND FRUGAL !!

HeeHoo despatched me to obtain new windscreen wipers for his motoring piece this week. I was humbled as it is after all his favourite car, (which he generally only allows me to drive when it needs fuel,) and it is vast, it must be the longest car in the world!

His exact words were "ask Ryan at Mercedes Tristar to order me some new wipers please dearest". However I was just trying to be useful (and frugal) and decided to go the cheaper and less bothersome route... Now HeeHoo's favourite motoring piece is fairly ancient but much loved. Beautifully maintained with a shiny walnut dashboard and fittings and leather seats and interior, I never really feel quite up to the task of being allowed to drive this elegant vehicle.

I parked tentatively outside a well known motor spares shop, quite forgetting that it is "a jungle out there".. As I emerged from the car, rather regally I thought, knees together nicely just like Princess Diana, I was almost bowled over by a furry of touts.

One virtually snatched the windscreen wiper from my hand and told me rather furtively that he had the exact one at his "shop" round the corner. I was overwhelmed with horror as I was suddenly surrounded by a group of glowering, gesticulating men. Hanging on to my handbag, I suddenly gathered courage and snatched back my wiper and fled towards the shop with an equally angry plethora of fellows in hot pursuit.

Fortunately the security guard spotted my discomfort and rushed at the mob brandishing his rhino hide shambok in a most stylish Kung Fu Fashion.

Having purchased the correct size wipers with relative ease, my next dilemma was how to face the angry lynch mob outside the shop. I was no longer a potential customer so the security guard had lost interest in me, so I tucked myself almost under the armpit of a bulky fellow shopper and scurried out.

The touts spotted me instantly and were inflamed that I had ignored their offer of cheaper wipers that had "fallen off the back of a truck". So they pursued me to HeeHoo's car belligerently offering their assistance to fit the wipers. My courage evaporated again as I lost control of my new purchase to one of the mob, and shot into the safety of the vehicle locking the doors. The main tout and an apprentice tout began to haul on HeeHoo's windscreen wipers in a most indelicate fashion, and to my horror the old were off and the new were on in a flash.

I handed a dollar bill through a tiny slit in the window and fled, quivering in my shoes as I thought of what HeeHoo would have to say at my rash actions.

Discretion however is the better part of valor and so I "forgot" to mention the incident to the great man in question. It was only the next day, when I was charged with the task of refueling THE CAR when the wrath of God descended on my head in the form of a serious thunderstorm, that I remembered my indiscretions.

One of our dramatic, wonderful, glorious thunderstorms began in ernest and I turned the windscreen wipers full on to cope with the gigantic volumes of water drenching the windscreen.

Suddenly the left hand wiper blade (the one that was fitted by the apprentice tout,) flew off its holder and impaled itself in the calf of a passing cyclist with the speed of one of William Tells arrows !!

Mortified I stopped the car and tended the cyclist, and then soaking wet and shivering in trepidation, I retrieved my wiper and drove straight to where HeeHoo had instructed me in the first place, safe into the tender arms of Ryan from Mercedes Tristar !!

PROPOSED QUIZ QUESTIONS SESSIONS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND ANYBODY ELSE INTERESTED.
In March this year a quiz questions session took place in the beautiful surroundings of the Hillside Dams Conservancy.
Following this I got the idea to try and organise some more of these events and I put a write-up in the Morning Mirror calling for contact persons at the various senior citizens' complexes. Unfortunately nothing much transpired and being a senior citizen myself I lack the means and the energy to call on these places myself.
I therefore now appeal to JUNIOR residents living close to any complexes to act as go-between to keep contact with me (e-mail) and the old folk. Please let me have your particulars !!! (Don't worry about ID number or your tax reference.......) I have discovered a very attractive and suitable place in Pembroke Place in Hillside not far off the Matopos Road. Entry will be free and the restaurant there will provide tea/coffee to pensioners (only) at subsidised prices.
The provisional date for the proposed session is Tuesday 16th November. (It will have to be a week-day away from the busy week-end). Time 10 - 12 am. Directions to Pembroke Place are as follows: From town proceed on the Matopos Road towards Cresta Churchill, turn left into either Pembroke Road of Napier Avenue and follow to the end of the road. Anybody is welcome to attend. The more the merrier, whatever age. It would be appreciated if younger people with vacant seats in their cars would give lifts to seniors without transport. Now I am signing off and am going to wait and see what happens.
Yours, Dick Wisselo (a.k.a. Wiseowls) e-mail : wiseowls@gatorzw.com

TALES OF BEATRIX POTTER & WINTER DREAMS
Friday 26 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.- with a supper interval. Five of Beatrix Potter's most famous and delightful tales come to life in this colourful and imaginative interpretation with "guest appearances" of characters from other tales. John Lanchbery used Victorian themes to form the basis of a wonderfully tuneful score and the brilliant choreography was created by Sir Frederick Ashton (who appears as Mrs.Tiggywinkle!) and danced by members of the Royal Ballet. In strong contrast, "Winter Dreams" is an undisputed masterpiece by Kenneth Macmillan to piano music by Tchaikovsky and Russian folk music for guitar ensemble. Based on Chekhov's "Three Sisters", it reveals the intricate relationship of the characters trapped in the stultifying atmosphere of a Russian provincial town at the turn of the 20th century. Darcey Bussell dances Masha, the sister married to a boring, worthy schoolmaster (Anthony Dowell), and drawn into an affair with the dashing Colonel Vershinin, danced with passionate intensity and thrilling virtuosity by Irek Mukhamedov. Admission: $3.00 / R20.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

3) Roses And Raspberries
Please could you give a raspberry to the ZBC licensing officers who have been so unpleasant to the elderly folk at Garden Park. Over the age of 75 it is not necessary to buy a licence from ZBC. My Mother-in- Law had a difficult time and despite telling the Officer that she didn't have to have a licence he demanded to see her I'd and then issued her with a fine notice when she didn't produce it immediately. This necessitated a visit to the Police Station to clear the matter up ... and a rose to the Z.R.P. who were very charming and dealt with my in-laws in a very sympathetic manner.

Whilst I am writing can you also please give a very big rose to the "diggers" who are working so hard digging trenches for the new fibre optic cables. They worked so hard in our road and dug a perfectly straight line for the new fibre optic cables - it was so impressive to see them work. They then replaced our brick driveway so beautifully you would never know it had been disturbed.

Yes ... they dug through the TelOne line that supplies all the houses but that allows me to give a big rose bouquet to TelOne who responded so quickly and pleasantly and managed to restore our lines in two days!

4) Congratulations

WARM HEART UGLY FACE
Do you remember queuing in the bank every day to draw your allowance that would buy half a loaf of bread ? Do you remember when our husbands would go off and "play golf" on Friday lunchtime just in case the police came to throw them into the cells for the weekend ?
Do you remember staring at rows and rows of empty shelves and wondering what you were going to feed the family ?
What short memories we all have ...
Well thankfully Jerome Gardner has documented those crazy days and now his book " Warm Heart Ugly Face" is available. The story of a traumatic decade of hyperinflation and its debilitating consequences for the people of Zimbabwe.
People wishing to buy the book can either e-mail gardnerj@yoafrica.com or phone Bulawayo 75848 In Harare the contact details are Zfn, Cecil House, 2 Central Ave [cnr Second, opp NSSA, in front of Datvest] Telephone 0733016576 and speak to Fadzai Mhenyu. Place your order with Exclusive Books in SA.

9) Gossip Column

I just had to thank you for the article on "AFRICAN RAIN"
I have always been a person who absolutely loves the rain. What I miss the most about living in Cape Town is all the pomp and ceremony ie the thunder and lightning, that goes with a good thunder storm, and the sun that shows its smiling face straight afterwards. There was always much warning and plenty time to get your washing off the line, close the windows, get home from a walk, whatever. Here in Cape Town, it just falls out the sky completely unannounced. We were here 2 years before I heard any thunder. It was so conspicuous by its absence !! It brought back such pleasant memories for me !! Soak up this African pleasure. You won't know how much you will miss it, until you don't have it anymore !!

"Christmas is coming - the geese are getting fat,
Please put a penny in the old man's hat.
If you haven't got a penny then a farthing will do.
If you haven't got a farthing, then God Bless You."

Available at $10 from Peter himself (tel; 240517), Hillside Pharmacy or the Zimbabwe Academy of Music.

Hi, if there are any fellow Zimbabweans on holiday in Britain, who would like a free " walk around

SERVICES OFFER
Does anyone have loads of slide photographs that are stored away as their projector machine is out of order or you just don't know what to do with them as noone actually pulls them out to look at them anymore. To make life a lot simpler you can now put all your slides onto your computer and have them all saved onto disk or your computer instead of lugging out those boxes of slides to see photo's of the "old days". And what's even better is you don't have to do this all yourself, I can be of service for all the retrieving and inputting of all your slides. I have a high quality specific scanner from England for this type of scanning. As this is a very lengthy process and time consuming my charges are tiered to suit your needs. They go as follows:
Up to 500 slides U$300.00 Up to 750 slides U$450.00 Up to 1000 slides U$600.00 THIS IS A CHARGE OF 0.60cents per slide/photo, on my previous charge which was a promotional/opening special it was 0.40cents per slide/photo. I am still cheaper than any other, eg other services charge U$2.00 per slide/photo. However, I am always open to negotiations. Anything more than that we will have to discuss before making arrangements, if you would like to enquire about anything else to do with this service please don't hesitate to contact me anytime. WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER 1/11
We have had our first rains but the season only really gets going from mid -Nov. The initial rains will bring relief to all the shallow rooted plants but more deep rooted plants, like roses and your fruit trees, will need a deeper soaking. As a guideline 25mm of rain will last your garden about a week before you start needing to water again.
What are we doing with our rainwater? A medium size house say 30 mtsx 30 mts will give you a roof area of nearly 1000 sq mts. A good fall of rain, say 25mm, would generate 25,000 litres of run off or 55 days of water on your ration. If you had 5 big 5,000 liter water tanks you would fill them all in one go. All the houses in the 50;s and 60's had water tanks under the gutters. Some thing to think about considering Bulawayo's perennials water woes.

WHAT TO DO IN NOVEMBER
November is the last month for getting you garden ready before Christmas. Any thing you plant now will still have time to grow for the holidays. Dead head all you flowers. Once a plant starts to set seed it has completed its mission. By deadheading weekly you will extend your flowering season dramatically. Lift your winter bulbs and let them dry off before storing them away for the summer. Check your power lines and see if you have any branches touching them. See if you can cut them back or if you think you cannot cope call Zesa. Slugs and snails will be out in full force with the rains. They can be very destructive in your garden and need to be controlled before they start breeding the next generation. Weed you lawns whilst the weeds are still small and manageable. Feed your roses on a monthly basis. You should be carrying out a monthly rose insecticide spraying and a monthly fungicide spraying at this stage. Feed your pot plants. If your orchids are over their flowering you can look at cleaning them up and re-potting them. Whilst you can still remember which areas had too much sun in October think about planting a new tree for more shade in the future.

ECO/ENVIRO
I have had only two takers to come and see compost making in action and would like a few more before setting up a demonstration on a Saturday morning. I have been trying a number of herbal and eco-friendly insecticide options over the years and I must admit that I have been disappointed in the results. Until I find some effective options to give you I want to tell you what I do to balance the environment with effective control. I first look at the problem.
Once I have assessed the problem I look for the most environmentally friendly control option. . Lady Birds can control a small infestation of aphids A bad infestation of scale needs a stronger remedy. If I can get away with Jeyes fluid or soapy water I will do so. Usually I look to see which of the Green label chemicals will do the job. If a Green label cannot do it I will see what Orange labels will work. Occasionally I go to a Red label in the case of a bad infestation. Once a year or so I might need to use a Purple label chemical. All the chemicals need to be handled correctly, use the correct dosage, spray only the problem areas and spray at dusk so you do not kill other species.
Used responsibly I have no problem using commercial pesticides. As an example of gross stupidity I had a mother ask me about a remedy for black ants in her babies bedroom. I suggested baby powder. Its 100% safe, eco/enviro friendly and its your child you are dealing with. I saw her a week later and asked her if she had solved the problem. Yup - she went to a Pest Control company and got a Red label chemical which has Chlordane in it. ( Its banned all over the world as it is very carcinogenic). She then poured it neat along the wall in the baby's room!
I was flabbergasted. I asked her if the baby became very restless and if she had an unexplained headache? She was quite surprised that I knew this. It is the abuse of chemicals that is a much bigger problem then the correct and sensible use of pesticides. I know that effective herbal options are coming onto the market and I will keep you posted.

FAQ'S In October
Rose beetles are back in season and I prefer to spray with a systemic insecticide like Dimethoate. You spray once in the late evening and the ingredients are absorbed into the plant and remain active for 3 weeks. ( So you do not have to keep spraying) Spray the soil below the roses as the beetles often burrow in to the soil during the daytime. Mealy bug is also becoming a problem. You will see small white fluffy insects appearing on your plants and they will eventually cover the whole plant. A Green label product like Malathion 50 will clean them up quickly though you may have to spray again after 3 weeks to catch the new hatchlings.
