FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS

Those with a love for books will always remember the Christian Vigne Bookshop and library in Bulawayo. The new Vigne Bookshop is in Fife Street and 13th Ave and the old one was in Fife Street, I think, but I stand to be corrected, where Brooks Fabrics (now Chippys) used to be.

Oh how well I remember the smell of that place. The divine smell of old books mingled with the fragrance of fresh percolated coffee ..

I can still smell it today when I pick up and old book.

The books were carefully covered in plastic and as time wore on and books became harder to come by, they would be pretty old and frail but still as delectable.

For a paltry sum of a few pence one could borrow a book for a week or two and life was never dull. No telly in those days, no computers, no DVDs, just a book and a spare afternoon from school, or by torchlight under the bed clothes when Mother had turned off the lights !!

The new books were hired out at slightly more than the old ones, and you could take them for less time, but they had every single book a girl or boy could possibly wish for. All the Enid Blytons - the Adventure series, the Secret Seven Series, the Famous Five Series, The Hardy Boys , Just William and the Nancy Drews... ooohhhh drool !!

How well I remember the River of Adventure, The Mountain of Adventure and the Valley of Adventure. In those very books our love for excitement, adventure, outdoors, justice and freedom were born. Thank goodness Mother firmly persuaded us to avoid the Mills and Boon section !!

As we grew older Christian Vigne was still there, as we grew past the Blytons and grew into the Barbara Cartlands, the Arthur Haileys, the Barbara Taylor Bradfords, Irving Wallace, Robert Ludlum and Wilbur Smith. As time passed and the love of reading remained even with the advent of the electronic age we read avidly the Jonathan Kellermans and Patricia Cornwells.

One could browse for hours seeking a favourite book, sip on a delicious cup of coffee and tuck into a giant piece of chocolate cake, curl up on an armchair and read, and life was blissful in the extreme.

We have a vast library at home, jammed full of every conceivable type of book. HeeHoo's tastes are more eclectic than mine, as a child he read Gerald Durrell instead of Enid Blyton and these days he reads very odd books such as those tomes about William Churchill by William Manchester, and scary books by Phillip Gourevitch.

Sadly today things have changed in the Kriel household and books are a thing of the past.

HeeHoo being the gadget king, now reads on his Kindle or his i pad and insists that I do the same, but somehow those new fangled toys of his just don't smell the same as those ancient old books from the Christian Vigne Library !!

Jill and Brian Tiller took over the Christian Vigne library some years ago, now called simple Vigne Bookshop, they moved down further along Fife Street, but they are still there, still with that lovely "old bookish" smell and still looking after all your library and stationary needs !!

When I went to Baines School , the games houses were ( I think ) : Churchill , Mountbatten , Roosevelt , Smuts ... obviously , named after FAMOUS men . Does anyone know the story behind the Eveline houses ? And Milton " Old boys " have been very quiet about mentioning that school's games houses ? how many ? what were they named after ?

LOST FROG EXPEDITION.
As promised I am sending you a run down on the "Lost Frog" expedition, this was sponsored by an American Organization, and was comprised of Don Broadley, Bernard Mapangapanga and myself from Bulawayo. A South African team was made up of Professor L. Dupreez, Mike Cummings, Werner Conradie, covering the following Institutes, National Museums Of Zimbabwe, University of Orange Free State, University of Potchestroom, Port Elizabeth Museum.

Our tasks were to find three species of long lost frogs, these being Pro-Breviceps (Probreviceps rhodesianus Poynton and Broadley, 1967- Arthroleptis troglodytes Poynton, 1963 and Arthroleptis xenodactyloides Hewitt, 1933, it is sad to report that none were located, however the South African team appeared to find a number of new Tadpole species( To be verified) and a new Stream Frog (to be verified) they were also able to locate a new species of Berg Adder (still to be verified).
Artesian gold miners (Gold Panners) are causing irreparable damage to the river systems, the Pungwe is silted, and is running brown, as a result the frogs I am afraid are possibly going extinct, this being the general consensus of all members on the expedition. It is sad also to report that the Samango monkeys in the Stapleford area are no longer there, and the Crowned eagle has also departed, the Crowned eagle preys on Samango monkeys. We were also aware of large scale mining conducted by Chinese, and Russian Organisations.

May I please make a plea to your reading public to be on the lookout for frogs of all kinds this coming rainy season, which I hope will be a good one. As you are aware I am particularly interested in the Giant Bullfrogs, which now appear to be seriously threatened, but it is possible that all the frogs and toads are now under threat. May I appeal to all readers to contact me on Byo 258147 if they become aware of tadpoles and frogs, I will come out and inspect them, and if they are in a position of threat I will move them to a more suitable site.
My email address is robron@yoafrica.com .

We were trying to set up a life line with Zimbabwean Authors to help get their work published. I have since moved to UK, and although I do keep in touch with some of the Authors, there is one author I am desperately looking for: John Weeks, he wrote the book The Golden Spiderweb. He was based in Harare on the outskirts on farmland. I would really like to get in touch with him and if anyone knows of his whereabouts I would be most grateful. Many thanks for your time.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?
Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help. If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help. Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls?
If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
Please contact ColRose Consultants and ask to speak to Colin. Cell: 091 2 353 817 e-mail: colrose@yoafrica.co.zw

WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER 1/10
We are now well into summer and have had quite a few days of 35oC temperatures. We can expect a lot more heat before the rains start in early November but we may be lucky with some early falls in late October. The long range rain forecast is for a normal start to the season and reasonable rains in the 3 month forecast period. The Jacaranda flowers are starting to carpet the roads and every one is looking forward to that first magical fall of real rain.

What To Do in October.
Keeping up with your watering is the most pressing problem in most gardens. Watering in the evenings will be up to 50% more effective then your daytime watering. Individual deep soakings are much better then frequent light waterings. Weeds are appearing quickly now and should come out whilst they are still small. They will rob your soils of water and fertilizer, whilst giving you nothing in return.
The summer pests are also on their way and particularly prevalent at the moment are aphids. I have seen a lot of citrus leaves coming into the nursery and all have the twisted and curled up signs of a severe aphid attack. Soapy water will not work with this type of bad infestation and you would best be served by using a systemic pesticide like DIMETHOATE @ 1ml /lt. Also busy now are the Rose beetles and tip wilters on your roses. They can be killed by hand but the Dimethoate will give you 2-3 weeks of protection, as it is a systemic pesticide.
Start spraying your roses from now on. You should try to spray an insecticide every 2 weeks and a fungicide every two weeks. You can some times mix the two but not all chemicals are compatible. Read your labels.
Azaleas can be pruned back once they have finished flowering as can you Jasmine creepers and Banksias roses. If you did not cut back your Bougainvillea's in the winter look at getting them cut back quite hard now before they get into another summers worth of growth.
Lawns can be badly disfigured by crickets as they make yellow patches of dead grass. Controlling them with well-diluted surf or dishwashing liquid does produce a very quick reaction but do remember to collect them up and put boiling water on them to humanely kill them. If not they will recover and go back into their holes. Alternatively mix a green label product like MALATHION 50 at 1 ml / lt and pour that down their holes.
Clean out your gutters and check your down pipes before the rains to ensure you do have rain water backing up into you roof.

Eco/Enviro Notes
As an Eco/ Enviro Warrior you should be aware of some of the disciplines that you will need to be successful. This is a long-term project and you will need a lot of patience.
There are very few quick fire solutions as most of the options revolve around 3,6 and 12 month routines practiced over several years before you start seeing significant results.
You will need to walk and look at your plants on a daily basis to catch pest and disease problems at the very earliest stages, when then can be dealt with by common eco- friendly methods i.e. soapy water, hand picking, dabbing with meths on an ear bud.
To build a poor soil up to a good level of health and fertility will take at least 5 years. This will entail putting compost or manure on the beds, to a depth of 50 mm, at least twice a year. You will need to get to know who are the good bugs and who are the bad ones. You should also get to know the ones who you will just have to learn to live with i.e. the ants. (More on them later) The start point for your eco-garden is getting enough quantities of compost/manure for all your beds, twice a year. A well run eco-garden will in time produce more compost then it can use in a year.
I will deal with how to make good compost in the next News Letter.

What to Plant
Flower Gardens. Ageratum, Alyssum, Arctotis, Candytuft, Cockscomb, Coleus, Cosmos, Gazing, Helichrysum , Larkspur, Lobelia. Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Pansy, Salvia, Statice, Sun flowers, Summer Petunias ( much smaller flowers) Verbena, Zinnias. Vegetable Gardens. Beans, Beetroot, Butternut, Chili's, Egg Fruit, Maize, Melons, Pumpkins, Radish, Sweetcorn, Tomato, Watermelons.
Herbs. Basil, Celery, Chives, Coriander, Dill, Parsley, Sage, Tarragon, Thyme In The Nursery
We are expecting more stock of the new Mulberry Ice Berg towards the end of the month. There are is a small stock of export grade Amaryllis bulbs, with double flower shoots, in two colours at this stage :- Apple Blossom and Dragon Red. The is a good stock of Fever trees and Albizzias. There will also be a few more Yellow Clivias for sale before the end of October. The Summer Petunias are coming in now. They have much smaller flowers then the winter ones and can take the summer storms as they recover almost over night.
There are more of the special Duranta's coming in soon and these will include Sheena's Gold, Gold Mine and Sapphire. These are good colourful plants that are Bulawayo hardy and very showy. Pembroke has some large Pony Tail palms in pots that make an excellent display plant.

FAQ'S
What should I do about my Daisy Bush??
Daisy Bushes are usually planted out in autumn and look wonderful through out winter. Once the warm weather comes in the bushes start to grow faster and get bigger and very straggly. By the height of summer they tend to fall over and split their stems and look terrible.
It is at this stage that we take our next seasons cuttings and discard the mother plant. To get more life out of your Daisy Bush do not be afraid to cut it back strongly and you will be amazed at how it comes back again. Fertilise these cut back plants with some general fertilizer as they are very hungry feeders and there will not be much in the soil after they have been draining it for several months.
Happy Gardening
Dave
