THE BEND OVER BAZAAR

My crazy friend Margot dragged me off to the "Bend Over Bazaar" on Sunday !! Aptly named as there are no shelves or counters, but the goods are spread over the floor and one needs to "bend over" to inspect them !

Most third world countries have these fascinating markets where bargains abound.

HeeHoo was most disapproving needless to say, as a businessman, I suppose he has his sound reasons. No one is really sure from whence where these gigantic piles of clothes emanate .... are they containers of clothes sent to the country by caring but misguided charitable organizations ? Are they containers of clothes off-loaded on to third world countries by giant corporate clothing chains ?

HeeHoo insists this is one of the reasons why our local clothing manufacturers can no longer survive, and while I can see his logic, I can also see that the populace is so much better dressed now than they were before the emergence of these designer garment fests.

Donning sun glasses and an old hat so none of the industrialists could spot me, I sallied forth to see why the rag trade was suffering (or at least that was my excuse to HeeHoo, who is no fool and knew exactly what I was up to !!)

Sundays are quite peaceful at the Bazaar, Saturdays however are a nightmare. The atmosphere is carnival and festive with shop keepers bellowing out their bargain prices and a vivid description of their wares.

Everything from shoes to belts to purses, some laid neatly in rows and on hangers, but mostly just giant colorful mountains of clothing. Some of the "shops" have the protection of a colourful gazebo but most of them sit in the blazing sun all weekend to sell their wares.

One can find all sorts of clothing, jerseys, blouses, jeans and dresses. There is a vague semblance of order, the vast piles of vestments are divided into groups so if you are looking for blouses, they are in one great untidy mound.

Margot has a flair for fashion and the locals know her well, wherever she goes, those with de rigueur know she has spotted a bargain, and sharp eyed fashion conscious women follow her faithfully.

At first I was rather prissily picking up a skirt or a top rather hesitantly, wondering who on earth had worn this before ??

Margot would politely pull a couple of likely bargains over her clothes to show me what they looked like, although she is several sizes smaller than I, so I could get an idea of the informal purchasing procedure.

No changing rooms here, no mirrors and hooks to hang ones handbag !! If one needs privacy, a couple of helpful shop keepers would dump their babies on the ground and form a change room with their towels. All the while peering over the top of the "change rooms", clucking their approval at ones choice of clothing !!

But after a while, I too was squatting amongst the vestments quite unashamedly, tugging and pulling garments out from the bottom of the giant appalachian apparel mounds.

Wow, such bargains !! A beautiful Indian cambric caftan for a dollar, out of season cashmere jerseys two for a dollar !! A seersucker top from Kashmir ......

No haggling here, take it or leave it "my dalinck "

Ooops apologies to our struggling industrialists, you understand of course I did this only for journalistic reasons !!

PAB AND THE ACADEMY

WAGNER: TANNHAUSER
Friday 17 September at 6.30 p.m.in the Robert Sibson Hall 6.30 p.m. [with supper interval] 'Wagner's passionate opera about a medieval minstrel torn between the temptations of sacred and profane love is seen here in one of the most gorgeous and gloriously romantic productions in the Met's repertory' [New York Times]. 'A distinguished cast is headed by Richard Cassily who was perhaps the leading exponent of Tannhäuser at the time with Eva Marton as a radiant Elizabeth and Tatiana Troyanos a musically and dramatically stunning Venus. The evening's brightest star, however, was arguably James Levine whose grasp of the score was all-encompassing, bringing out all the incidental beauties while keeping it moving.' [Richard Eviden]. Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

DRUMS OF PEACE

The classic BBC dramatisation of Tolstoy's epic story of love and loss set against the background of the Napoleonic Wars begins on Thursday 23 September. Anthony Hopkins heads the cast as the soul-searching Pierre Bezuhov (a role for which he won that year's Best Actor BAFTA) and Morag Hood is the beautiful and impulsive Natasha Rostov. Alan Dobie is the dour but heroic Prince Andrei Bolkonsky and David Swift is Napoleon, whose decision to invade Russia in 1812 has far-reaching consequences for Pierre and the Rostov and Bolkonsky families. The principal aim of this twenty-part serial (to be shown over seven weeks at the Academy) was to transfer the rich characterisation and incident from the novel to fifteen hours of television drama and it boasts superb acting, award-winning design and breath-taking battle sequences involving thousands which were filmed in the former Yugoslavia Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 or $15.00 / R110.00 the series [Free to Red Carpet members only. There will be an opportunity to pay for the first session, then pay the balance for the season ticket if you'd like to make sure you want to see the whole series by watching the first episodes without commitment to the rest!]
ADAM: GISELLE
Friday 1 October at 7.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall [with supper interval].
'Perhaps the most celebrated ballet of the Romantic era, Adam's Giselle is the dramatic story of a peasant girl whose betrayal by her aristocratic lover causes her to go mad before dying and returning as a ghost. Featuring the fabulous Alina Cojocaru in the title role and Johan Kobborg as a torn Count Albrecht, Peter Wright's sparkling production and John Macfarlane's pastoral designs create an opulent feast for the eyes.' Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
N.B.CHANGE OF DATE
Wednesday 6 October at 7.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
A mesmerising Swedish film with subtitles of the best- selling thriller featuring the unconventional heroine Lisbeth Salander, the enigmatic, delinquent and dangerous security specialist. The plot concerns Henrik Vanger, a Swedish industrialist tormented by the loss of a child decades earlier who is convinced that a member of the family has committed the murder. Salander together with journalist Mikael Blomkvist delves deep into the Vangers' past to discover the truth but someone else wants the past to remain a secret and will go to any lengths to keep it that way... If you've read the book, you'll know you want to see the film - and, if you haven't, rest assured it's one of the classiest and most thrilling films you've seen in a long while! Zimbabwe is at a crossroads! A beautiful nation with great potential and many God-g iven promises, yet a nation still struggling for justice and peace and where the poor continue to suffer. The call is ringing out to return to God, unite and help the rural poor by training them to farm in a profitable and sustainable way.

Solution-based question & answer sessions Sounding board and brainstorming sessions Identification of goals Techniques and tools to enable you to your own deeper insights Development of a personalized action plan The outcomes that clients most often attribute to their coaching are a higher level of self-awareness and self-confidence, a more balanced life, smarter goal-setting and lower stress levels. WARM HEART UGLY FACE

Do you remember queuing in the bank every day to draw your allowance that would buy half a loaf of bread ? Do you remember when our husbands would go off and "play golf" on Friday lunchtime just in case the police came to throw them into the cells for the weekend ? Do you remember staring at rows and rows of empty shelves and wondering what you were going to feed the family ?

What short memories we all have .....

Well thankfully Jerome Gardner has documented those crazy days and now his book " Warm Heart Ugly Face" is available. The story of a traumatic decade of hyperinflation and its debilitating consequences for the people of Zimbabwe. People wishing to buy the book can either e-mail gardnerj@yoafrica.com or phone Bulawayo 75848 In Harare the contact details are Zfn, Cecil House, 2 Central Ave [cnr Second, opp NSSA, in front of Datvest] Telephone 0733016576 and speak to Fadzai Mhenyu

Econet Wireless is changing its prefix number from 091 to 077, with effect from October 2. This change is in line with global regulations on numbering set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Only the first three digits of the current number will change - from 091 to 077. The other seven digits remain the same.

To allow a smooth changeover to the new 077 number, our customers will be able to make calls to Econet numbers using both the current 091 and new 077 codes until November 2. However, after this period, a call to an Econet number will only be possible by using the new 077 prefix.

It is important to note that the changes are part of worldwide changes being led by the ITU, the agency of the UN which regulates ICTs. The changes will set new standards in numbering. Over the next few weeks, we will be running a media campaign to alert our customers to the changes. You can contribute to this by informing your own acquaintances as to this new plan.

21) Seeking Friends

I am trying to get hold of the swimming record for PATRICIA CLEMINSHAW - about year 1965 or thereabouts. Her daughters are my God daughters and the eldest now lives in Sydney and her daughter in turn is turning into a star swimmer like Pat was.

Pat's parents and I were very good friends and Pat spent her holidays with us and so on...she has since died (about 3 years ago) very young and suddenly, so her daughters keep picking my brains as to her life when young - now Paula has asked what I know about her swimming records.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.

Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography. Please contact ColRose Consultants and ask to speak to Colin. Cell: 091 2 353 817 e-mail: colrose@yoafrica.co.zw

RHODESIANs WITH THE SADF

John Redfern Writes:-

The Pretoria Branch of the Flame Lily Foundation (FLF) will hold a memorial service for Rhodesians who lost their lives in service of their country in the chapel alongside the Voortrekker Monument on 14 November 2010.

After the service, we plan to also lay wreaths at the SADF Wall of Remembrance nearby, where the names of several Rhodesians are inscribed. Family or friends of Rhodesians who died on active service with the SADF are invited to participate.

On 6 September 1979, en route to the assault on the Frelimo Brigade Headquarters at Mapai, a Puma helicopter of the SAAF carrying members of 1 Commando Rhodesian Light Infantry and Rhodesian Engineers was shot down by a lone Frelimo soldier armed with an RPG-7 rocket launcher, killing all seventeen men on board. Due to the intensity of the battle and the fierceness of the anti-aircraft fire, the bodies could not be recovered, and were left behind in Mozambique.

The names of the SAAF crew of the Puma, Captain Paul Velleman, Lieutenant Nigel Osborne and Sergeant Dick Retief, are inscribed on the SADF Wall of Remembrance at the Voortrekker Monument grounds outside Pretoria. The Rhodesians who died alongside them are recorded in the Rhodesian Rolls of Honour, which will be on display in the Voortrekker Monument's chapel on 14 November this year.

In 1980, a number of Rhodesians joined the SADF. Many were deployed in a combat role in South West Africa, Angola and Mozambique. Some lost their lives alongside their South African colleagues. The FLF would like to lay a wreath at the SADF Wall of Remembrance on 14 November, in memory of our former countrymen who laid down their lives for their country of adoption.

Although we have identified some of the Rhodesians whose names appear on the SADF Wall, some are not known to us.

We appeal to anyone who knows of a Rhodesian who died while on active service with the SADF from 1980, to please let us have the name and, if possible, date of death.

WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER 1/ 09
We seem to have gone from Winter to Summer and almost missed Spring. It is unusual to see the first Jacaranda flowers along with the red Lucky Bean flowers. The Syringas are now also in bloom along with the Petreas, Banksias and the Brunfelsias. The scents in ones garden on these warm evenings are just too delightful.

WHAT TO DO IN SEPTEMBER
Soil temperatures have come up to 15oC+ and most of your summer plantings of seeds and seedlings can be put in from now on.
September's main work is to get all your planting work done so that everything is producing or productive by November and in time for the Christmas period. Now that the heat is back watering becomes an important garden routine. Most plants need about 50mm of water a week. This is usually split into two waterings. Many gardeners are not sure how to measure their sprinkler irrigation. An easy way is to put out an old floor polish tin in the spray area. These tins are usually 25mm deep and it is an easy way to see when you have completed a cycle. As a guide line the average impact or irrigation sprinkler need about4-6 hours to put down 20-30mm. The metal rose sprays can put down 50mm in 20-30 minutes and need to be moved frequently if you are not to waste water. A deep soaking is far better for your plants then multiple light waterings. Aphids will start to appear from now on and can damage the new tips if they build up in numbers. Soapy water will deal with small infestations or you can use a green label product like Malathion 50/ Aphid Kill. You can now start doing your first cuttings of the new season. As your deciduous fruit starts to get to pea size you can start to spray for fruit worms with Lebaycid. Dahlia bulbs can be split and planted out now. Mulching of your roses, fruit trees and special plants with compost or old leaves will help with water retention in the coming hot period.

ECO & ENVIRO

These two buzzwords are used a great deal these days and particularly by gardeners. Much of what is put out is confusing and in many cases counter-productive. In the coming News Letters I will try to give you a better insight into how to garden in a sustainable and beneficial way. Much of what is put out is really 'boutique eco/enviro 'and it capitalize on peoples desire to do the right thing but rarely delivers the desired results. As an example you hear that fertilizers are 'bad' and you must go organic. Is using Single Super phosphate or Urea fertilizers gardening organically or in-organically? Both products are mined from the ground and milled to a size that can be used in your garden. Our soils are chronically short of phosphate and nitrogen and we need to take advantage of whatever nature gives us. Makes you think?

IN THE NURSERY'S

We have recently received some very good value Pony Tail Palms. These come in decorative pots and there are also some excellent bigger plants for a special feature in your garden. These are a very hardy and attractive plants. We are also expecting to get in some of the new 'Mulberry Ice Berg' rose. It is the same floribunda type that we know but the flowers are a deep purple. The summer petunias will also be coming in from now on. They have much smaller flowers then the large flowered 'cascade ' types and can withstand the heavy summer rains that tend to flatten the big flowered varieties.

FAQ'S

We are always being asked about Busy Lizzies or Impatiens and why there are none available. For nearly 3 years now there has been a virus that has killed off just about every plant in the whole of the sub-continent. Until the seed companies develop a virus resistant variety we will not see these colourful plants in our gardens for some time to come.
