LOVE LETTERS - WILL THEY BECOME EXTINCT ?

They are neatly stacked together chronologically in a Gold Cross Shoe Box, carefully placed inside carved wooden kist, tied in red velvet ribbon.
Neat cursive script addressed to Miss M. Morton, Rhodes House, Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia on the front of the envelope and on the back - from 72467 S/L M.R.Hill R.A. F. In Transit.
The first one is dated 29 February 1944 and the last one 27 February 1945. Then towards the back of the box there are several written to Squadron leader M. R. Hill 72467 with the address blocked out by an official sticker.
The sticker is penned in red and marked "Returned to sender on Air Ministry instructions from RAF Station Peterhead. "

Finally at the back of the Gold Cross shoe box is the telegram ...
"CABLE RECEIVED MICHAEL MISSING ON AIR OPERATION 12 MARCH LOVE -HILL"

One feels almost uncomfortable reading the tender utterances in these treasured epistles. Eager and excited talk of the wedding plans, whispers of love, but reducing to gestures of desperation and anguish when the letters were being returned. A lifetime of love and heartbreak in a shoe box, tied in a red ribbon.

There are photos too, not many in those halcyon World War II days, those charming sepia photos of men and women in stiff khaki serge with air force ribbons and medals festooning the breast. These simple words of utmost adoration, in a world torn apart by war, mean so much more than the trite phrases of today, a lonely vigil by just one of hundreds of thousands of men and women Missing In Action probably over the North Sea.

But this are so much more special in that the Miss M. Morton was my own precious Mum The roses did not last however, the handsome Squadron Leader had placed a standing order for a dozen red roses to be delivered to Rhodes House every Monday for the beautiful titan haired Miss Morton. They still came for many sad weeks after that terrible telegram...

Next to the Gold Cross shoe box is my own much smaller bundle of love letters from HeeHoo, also written in a war situation, but some forty years later. Some from J.O.C. Grapple, some from J.O.C. Hurricane. Possibly not so poignant and romantic, as call ups were six weeks in six weeks out in those days, thankfully without a tragic ending, but infinitely precious just the same.
As I tie the bundles reverently, I muse over this ancient and almost forgotten art of beautifully scripted hand-written letter writing.

Today one seldom puts pen to paper. It is so much easier to type, using e mails, Skype, Facebook and Twitter. Will ball point and fountain pens become an anachronism just like the feathered quill ? Sadly my own daughters will probably never have the secret pleasure of re-reading their own love letters, how does one re- read e-mails and text messages kept from thirty years ago ?
Modern love letters will undoubtedly disappear into starry eyed cyberspace never to be secretly read and re-read in a cocoon of rosy warmth, ever again.

Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo presents Aly Keita, Virtuoso Balafon Player from Mali
Tuesday 7th of September 2010
Robert Sibson Hall, Bulawayo Music Academy @ 7.00pm for 7.30pm
Tickets available at the Bulawayo Academy of Music and at the door for 5.00USD West African musician Aly Ke ta earned worldwide renown for his mastery of the balafon, a marimba-like instrument native to the region. The balafon is traditionally the instrument of the griot, or the oral historians and songsmiths of West Africa. Although the tradition lives on, it is not as a result of the griot that Ke ta became famous. Rather, it was due to his ability to take this millennium-old instrument into a modern musical context. Aly Keita was born in Mali into a family of musicians. There, he learnt how to make his own balafons and played them continually in order to excel. Aly hails from a famous musical family, the same that produced Salif Ke ta, one of West Africa's most treasured songwriters and musical talents. While rooted in tradition, Keita's Afro-pop, funk-fueled rhythm section and taste for complex jazz-oriented arrangements set him far apart from most balafonists.
Having been brought up in this challenging environment, Aly, as an adult relocated to Germany. Resettling in Germany proved to be very beneficial as his instrumental brilliance earned him opportunities to collaborate with jazz and world music legends such as, Trilok Gurtu and Joe Zawinul, among many others. Ke ta made his debut as a bandleader in 2008. The record, entitled Akwaba Inisene, turned heads across Europe. It debuted in the Top 20 on World Music Charts Europe. He has also participated in a number of projects together with Omar Sosa, Rhoda Scott, H.L demann, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Paco S ry, Karim Ziad, Jan Garbaret, Chander Sardjoe, L.Soubramania, Arto Touboyacyan, Etienne M'bapp , Linley Marthe, Mathew Garrison, Paulo Fr su...
With his impressive virtuosity, Aly develops spectacular and enchanting African polyphonies on his instrument with one thousand and one waves of his (two) magic hands !

ZIMBABWE A NATIONAL EMERGENCY (ZANE)
Dear Friend of Zimbabwe,
ZANE is a UK registered charity and has been in operation for eight years. ZANE targets three areas of need: PENSIONERS, EX SERVICEMEN, RE-BUILDING COMMUNITIES PENSIONERS Through rental support in old age homes ZANE has ensured that 34 of the 35 Old Age Homes in Zimbabwe are still functioning Zane provides rates and food supply to people in private homes Zane aims to provide medical support EX SERVICEMEN Zane distributes military grants from The Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services' League, US $ 400 000 was distributed last year to 600 beneficiaries RE-BUILDING COMMUNITIES Individuals with HIV and orphans are identified, treated, and rehabilitated Income generating projects and market gardening
FACTS
Spiraling costs inside Zimbabwe, the recession and a weakening of the pound means that ZANE can now only support 60% of the needs supported two years ago. Medical support is inadequate. No money has been lost to corruption in the last eight years Administration costs and expenses amount to 10% of the total amount we distribute. All recipients are screened - families are contacted before donations are given.
Tom Benyon Director of Zane writes:
In order to try and the raise the additional money we need, I am proposing to walk 450 miles from Edinburgh to London (well it looks downhill on the map!) starting on September 20th. We have already raised ?240K which may sound a lot of money, but the harsh reality is that it is only a couple of months support to people in Zimbabwe who have lost everything due to the collapse of the economy. I was told that anyone over the age of 60 who wakes in the morning and who is not hurting, must be dead. I propose to test that proposition to its ultimate! If you can sponsor me, please see the details of the walk on the ZANE website. You can sponsor on line. With all good wishes

Dear Suburbs Residents.
We have had 2 problems since our last newsletter three weeks ago.
Firstly, residents in Clarke Road were badly beaten up on a Friday evening. The Husband returned from Mass and was attacked in the driveway of their house. On hearing his shouts his wife went out to see what was happening and was also attacked, The son came out the house to find both his parents being attacked with crowbars and was also assaulted. The thieves got away with Laptop, Cellphones and money.

The second incident happened in Townsend Road, on a Wednesday evening. The man went outside at about 10.30 pm and found himself surrounded by 4 thieves. they marched him into the house. Called his family together and tied them up. Although the one robber had a gun no one was sure if it was a real gun or not.

The residents said the robbers were not at all professional, except for the tall one. The robbers got away with Laptop, cellphones and cash. If anyone has other incidents to report please let me have them information so I can put it in the next newsletter.
We are having the next Residents meeting on Wednesday 22nd September, starting at 5.45pm. Please note change of venue from BAC to..........
I have invited the Deputy Mayor the Honorable Councilor A Mpofu Refuse will be collected on Thursday 9th September. Thursday 7th October, Thursday 4th November and Thursday 9th December.
Please Note that we are appealing for donations as we have some expenses and only a few people have come forward. Even US$ 10.00 is better than nothing. Do any residents know where we can get our reflector vests Screen Printed at a reasonable rate? Important phone numbers

Life Coaching - Discover your game and play it!
The game of life is played on many fields - relationships, careers and personal growth. As a life coach, I can guide you to identify your goals, and motivate and support you to stay on top of your game. Don't expect a therapy session during life coaching, the process is different. Therapy deals with unresolved issues, while life coaching deals with where you are now, and where you want to be. A coach can be a powerful asset and partner in determining your life's course and staying on track. How can coaching benefit you? Develop self esteem Make positive life changes Improve and deepen your relationships Deal with fears and challenges Make positive progress towards your hopes, dreams and aspirations How does the process work? Solution-based question & answer sessions Sounding board and brainstorming sessions Identification of goals Techniques and tools to enable you to your own deeper insights Development of a personalized action plan The outcomes that clients most often attribute to their coaching are a higher level of self-awareness and self-confidence, a more balanced life, smarter goal-setting and lower stress levels. WARM HEART UGLY FACE
Do you remember queuing in the bank every day to draw your allowance that would buy half a loaf of bread ? Do you remember when our husbands would go off and "play golf" on Friday lunchtime just in case the police came to throw them into the cells for the weekend ? Do you remember staring at rows and rows of empty shelves and wondering what you were going to feed the family ? What short memories we all have ... Well thankfully Jerome Gardner has documented those crazy days and now his book " Warm Heart Ugly Face" is available. The story of a traumatic decade of hyperinflation and its debilitating consequences for the people of Zimbabwe.
People wishing to buy the book can either e-mail gardnerj@yoafrica.com or phone Bulawayo 75848 In Harare the contact details are Zfn, Cecil House, 2 Central Ave [cnr Second, opp NSSA, in front of Datvest] Telephone 0733016576 and speak to Fadzai Mhenyu

I am looking for the book by Jeannie Boggie called ''With husband and farm in Rhodesia'' Also does anyone have any info on the place called Soutpansberg in early days. There was such a place which is not now shown on any maps.

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!
it's about time something drastic was done ... we used to have nearly 50 in the Black Rhino Conservancy here near Kwe Kwe .... and now we have under 10 left ........

THAILAND - Bangkok Star - 18th August
A woman mourns over the body of her deceased husband after he had purchased apparently purposely contaminated Rhino horn on the open market in Bangkok. The source of the contamination is still to be verified but it is thought to be from a private game farm somewhere in southern Africa.
Officials in Thailand are frantic to identify the source, as the powdered horn is sold in minuscule amounts and they have no idea how much has already been distributed throughout Bangkok. Local hospitals are on standby for an unprecedented influx of new cases.

Officials are unable get information as the rhino horn dealers in Bangkok are being uncooperative. They neither want to be fingered as being the provider of the poisoned horn, not do they want to reveal their illegal international sources. It is believed that private game farm owners in southern Africa are colluding between themselves to distribute an effective poison that is harmless to the animals but harmful, or even fatal as in this case, to those that ingest the contaminated horn.

A game farm owner from the North West Province who obviously wishes to remain anonymous, has admitted to using the poison on 4 of his animals. Three of them have shown no side-effects whatsoever 2 months after the poison was injected into the horns. However the 4th rhino was slaughtered and de-horned on a remote part of his farm in the last week of July. When asked to comment on the death in Thailand from suspect poisoned rhino horn, he refused to be drawn into the morals of the farmers joint action. He said that there would be many more cases in the near future as he was personally aware of at least another 5 slaughters of contaminated rhinos in the North West Province alone.

Authorities in South Africa are unable to comment on the "poison" collusion among the game farm owners nor are they able to verify the source of the contaminated horn.
Despite the ethical furore the poisoning of rhino horn may trigger, to many of us this is what we've been waiting for - It's great news in a desperate fight - at last a positive way to fight back to help save the rhino, no matter how illegal - after all the poachers & the "Rhino Mafia" & corrupt politicians or official's acts are also very much illegal !! - all hell will break loose but always remember - " 'n boer maak 'n plan" - this one's desperate but terrific and will wake the Zim, Mozam, SA & Provincial Gov's & Authorities & those further north from their arrogant/corrupt slumbers !! The fight's really on - can't wait !! - Well done to the farmers & rhino owners !!
