WINTER IN ZIMBABWE

In the Northern Hemisphere the glorious poinsettias are hothouse grown and they stand proudly on coffee tables, wrapped in ruby tissue, heralding the onset of Christmas.

In Zimbabwe the humble poinsettia is a glorious mass of blooms twenty feet tall, twenty feet wide, usually beaming profusely over the garden wall.

This year they are especially brilliant due to late heavy rains, and unlike other years, are not scraggly, lank and pale, but the blooms are thick and abundant in a canopy of crimson, scarlet and vermillion. The double poinsettia with the curly leaves is particularly breathtaking this year. And then there is the peachy poinsettia, a splash of apricot with daffodil yellow centres, heads held proudly in the crisp winter air, bobbing and bouncing happily as they peer over the garden walls expectantly.

The yellow poinsettia are hard to find and secretive this year, I have yet to see one, maybe they have all regressed to the dominant red, but not so the snowy white miniature poinsettias. These flowers were tiny, incandescent, artfully bundled together in a mass of perfumed profusion. At one stage early in the winter, they almost cast a luminous glow over the city, giving the suburbs a bridal look as of thousands of veils in the bright winter sun.

Another tree that quite takes one's breath away is the white flowering Ipomea or "Morning Glory Tree" It also looks like a giant flowering bride's bouquet, with long arching branches, draping right to the ground, festooned with giant white perfumed blossoms.

Our winters here are glorious, we have long cold crisp nights, and short warm toasty sunlit days. The sky today is smogless, unlike other winter cities. perhaps because the rains were so late that the sky is a brilliant turquoise, or perhaps a peacock blue ? The sky right now is so crisp and clear that it looks as though it would shatter if pierced.

Only very occasionally will it turn grey and dismal, then everyone throws up their hands in horror and heads for home, but these days are few and far between. The majority of our winter days are without doubt, Diamond Days.

Strangely enough this year is different, with those late heavy tans, the jacarandas, in mid July, are still laden with a deep layer of leaves of gold and green. By now they should have discarded their leaves, and today the gardeners stand around expectantly, knowing they should be sweeping, there is little else to do, the lawns are not growing, but there is nothing to sweep yet .. but wait . soon they will be cursing the myriads of tiny fallen leaves and their stems. The awe inspiring spring gardens that we so look forward to are not yet flowering. The ranunculus the cinererias, the sweet peas, the dahlias are still teasing us with their spring promise, but we relish the winters and are quite happy to wait and see.

Summers can be mean in Zim, we are not into air conditioning, we love our windows thrown open wide seeking a summer breeze, and so our cold winters are a very special relief. Mind you I say cold, our Texas visitors, quite used to snow in winter and temperatures of over 105 degrees in summer, laughed at us and pointedly came dressed in their short shirt sleeves while we were snug in our winter woolies !

Jack Frost has been around here and there, his icy fingers have taken the choice plants, the coleus are brown and bedraggled, the begonias look tired and wan. But many plants including the lawn, love to be burnt and they make darn sure they come back twice as beautiful once winter is over. "I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show".

Andrew Wyeth

Beethoven: Fidelio [with supper interval]
Beethoven's only opera will be shown in a production from the Glyndebourne Festival which received a four- star top recommendation from the Penguin Guide: "It is good to have as consummate an actress as Elisabeth S'derstr'm as Leonore in this vintage Glyndebourne account of Fidelio, recorded in 1979. Bernard Haitink conducts a powerful performance with Kurt Appelgren a superb Rocco, Elizabeth Gale a sweet Marzelline and Anton de Ridder an unstrained Florestan... John Bury's sets for Peter Hall's production vividly capture the atmosphere of the Napoleonic period. A clear first choice on DVD." Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

Thursday 5 August at 7.00 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
Film: Gosford Park
"Gosford Park", directed by Robert Altman, features an all- star cast including Eileen Atkins, Helen Mirren, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Alan Bates, Stephen Fry, Michael Gambon and Derek Jacobi. It was voted Best British Film of the Year and was described by the Daily Mail as "an instant classic", the Mirror as "a triumph" and the Telegraph as "brilliant". "It is November 1932. Gosford Park is the magnificent country estate to which Sir William McCordle and his wife, Lady Sylvia, gather relations and friends for a weekend shooting party. As the guests assemble in the gilded drawing rooms above, their personal maids and valets swell the ranks of the house servants in the teeming kitchen and corridors below-stairs. But all is not as it seems: neither amongst the bejewelled guests lunching and dining at their enormous leisure, nor in the attic bedrooms and stark work places where the servants labour for the comfort of their employers. Part comedy of manners, part mystery, the film is finally a moving portrait of events that bridge generations, class, sex, tragic personal history - and culminate in a murder. Or is it two murders?."

Friday 6 August at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
Gounod: Romeo et Juliette [with supper interval].
Sir Charles Mackerras, who died on 14 July, "teases the romantic beauty from Gounod's score, which has been much admired since its first performance in 1867. In this recording the youthful Roberto Alagna as Romeo and Leontina Vaduva as Juliet lead an excellent cast in a touching portrayal of Shakespeare's story of impossible love."

3) Roses And Raspberries
I would like to send my son a bunch of roses for personally trying to fix all the potholes in Kent Road in Hillside..
The Rs.

I would like to comment on the raspberry recently given to Great Zimbabwe in the Morning Mirror. I spent two days there last week and I was pleasantly impressed with the upgrade in the upkeep and presentation of the site since I started visiting it regularly two years ago in the course of my work, both as a professional archaeologist and tour guide. The grass and other vegetation at the site had been cut back, firebreaks cleared all around the site, remarkably little litter was in evidence and I saw workers busy clearing away what there was by the end of the day. Even the dirt roads around the site had been repaired. I even had the experience of watching museum employees (in new uniforms) carrying out a detailed inspection of the walls, checking for bulges and splits as a prelude to more serious conservation efforts; the staff in general are all friendly and helpful. Compared to previous visits this was an enjoyable surprise.

National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) receives very little money from government to assist in its wide-ranging responsibility as custodian of all of Zimbabwe's cultural heritage and has to generate additional income to support its activities, mainly from entrance fees. I agree that the entrance fee of $5 at Great Zimbabwe is a little excessive (especially since you don't get anything complementary like a map or brochure as in South Africa or elsewhere) but unlike many other sites I regularly visit in Zimbabwe, you can actually see your money being spent on upkeep. Additionally the entrance fee lasts you the whole day - even if you go out for lunch and return later in the day. Compare this to Victoria Falls where $5 gets you a single entry that expires as you walk through the turnstile. That's a real rip-off, courtesy of National Parks by the way!

Paul Hubbard

A DVD projector and PA system are available. There is a coffee shop at the Academy which offers catering facilities and there is also parking space within the grounds and a security guard on duty.
Full details available from the Academy - tel: 60684 / 67195 E-mail: zam@gatorzw.co.uk

Academy Closure
The Zimbabwe Academy of Music wishes to make it plain that it remains open and functioning as normal. The notice and stories carried in the newspapers were the result of a misunderstanding and delayed action on the part of the Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education.
The Academy is registered with the Ministry of Education, Sport, the Arts and Culture and offers tuition in music to the equivalent of O level and occasionally with Grade 8 students the equivalent of A level. As it does not offer degrees or certificates pertaining in any way to higher education, it does not need to be registered with the Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education.
The Academy assumed that the issue had been resolved several months ago but apparently the Ministry has not yet updated its records to take account of this, hence the announcements that appeared in the press on 11 & 13 July.

Every year at this time of the year in a 'sometimes sunny' Marlborough in UK we have our Jazz Festival when the various pubs, churches, marquees on various open spaces and the town hall become home to several different groups and bands playing a variety of jazz from gospel singers to funky jazz fusion. We always seek out a bit of Africa to enjoy !! Last year we saw a great Zimbabwe cappella group called Umdumo Wesizwe all the way from Makokoba and we were unanimous that we shouldn't miss them again. Hence, we entered our grand St. Mary's church at the end of the High Street and squeezed in amongst the 'congregation' and sat in awe as we were entertained by our very own Zimbabweans. I felt so very proud of them - all come from humble beginnings . They are obviously very disciplined to have achieved what they have and they did these slick, energetic tip-toe dance routines which were mesmerising with their harmonies. So, once again felt quite emotional, and so proud to be a Zimbabwean!!! Another thing we remarked on was that they had a warmth and happiness about them that was so refreshing and despite the energetic routines their faces showed such calmness. As you can imagine my emotions played with me shedding the odd tear one minute and rejoicing with them the next and a good half an hour reminiscing!!! Oh Africa!!!

With a recent trip to the Northern Territory and school holidays just finishing I have got a little slack and behind (more of that later) with my emails. I have finally read your last MM about your visit to the jeans department. It rang so many bells having looked for a new pair of jeans last week. I have become totally slack in the behind and have been advised by a friend to try the men's department for pants as men have smaller bums. Mine (bum that is) left its place of abode many years ago and ladies jeans are made for those with curves in the right places.

I had become quite used to hipsters and being short waisted found them quite good but they are now showing up the middle aged spread rather badly, catching me just in the wrong place. Loose winter sweaters help but I will have to do something before summer. Something I find interesting is that the granddaughters won't wear anything around their waist. If I hike up their skirts to waist level they immediately pull them down to their hips.

Jenny W. - Oz

from 1970-1978 I have lived in Johannesburg for 8 years with my family, My husband was originally from Zimbabwe-3 generations of parents and grandparents and a large family that was living in Bulawayo , as well as Salisbury in those years. My mother in law was an avid gardener , we often talked about her plants in her beautiful garden. I am a gardener myself.

In one of our visits to Bulawayo, I remember being taken to a beautiful park , as we were walking, I took one small leaf of a succulent plant which was growing in a large area and interested me. I brought it to Johannesburg and cultivated it, it grew into a plant. In 1978 we left S.A. to return to the U.S.A. I brought a leaf of that plant and two small branches of a ginger bush plant given to me by my mother in law, she said it grew at the Matopos.

The cuttings were hidden in a wet napkin in my son's toy suitcase, we stopped in England, Italy, Israel and finally San Diego, Ca. At every stop I would unwrap the cuttings and put them in a dish of a sort with a little water.

Years later I found out the succulent plant's name is an African Kalanchoe which is still growing very well in my back yard and has lots of healthy babies, the Ginger Bush is doing well too, in fact, my son is growing them as well in Los Angeles where he lives.

All these years I did'nt remember the name of the park where I picked that leaf from and couldn't find out, but I always remembered the black swans which left a hugh impression on me, and how important it was for my kid's grandparent to take us there. This morning I read a poem about Rhodesia in an email I received from my sister in law who lives in L.A., that's where I saw the name "Centenary Park", I looked it up on the internet, and read your article-story from '2009 about the park it mentions the black and white swans, and then I knew , that's the name of the park. I can tell my son now where his plant comes from, Centenary Park.

Femina Garments
Corporate Wear Re-Call Femina Garments would like to notify any customers who have purchased our latest Corporate Wear Range in Navy and Black that we are issuing a re-call on the pencil skirts (style number 6069), four panel skirts (style number 6071) and slacks (style number 3273). We bought what we believed was a very high quality suiting from one of our regular suppliers and in good faith produced our latest corporate range. We have become aware of a problem with some of the fabric which results in a kind of shredding of the fabric along the seam. Please contact Anne Bonett at Femina Garments at 465571/81 or e-mail at feminasales@netconnect.co.zw to make an appointment to facilitate this exchange. We thank you for your support over the years and once again apologize for any inconvenience caused. At Femina Garments we pride ourselves on the high quality of our workmanship and materials used and assure you that we will do our best to rectify this problem.
Sincerely, JA Bonett Managing Director

Homeland by Michelle Frost

Within my soul, within my mind,
There lies a place I cannot find.
Home of my heart. Land of my birth.
Smoke-coloured stone and flame-coloured earth.
Electric skies. Shivering heat.
Blood-red clay beneath my feet.
At night when finally alone,
I close my eyes - and I am home.
I kneel and touch the blood-warm sand
And feel the pulse beneath my hand
Of an ancient life too old to name,
In an ancient land too wild to tame.
How can I show you what I feel?
How can I make this essence real?
I search for words in dumb frustration
To try and form some explanation,
But how can heart and soul be caught
In one-dimensional written thought?
If love and longing are a "fire"
And Man "consumed" by his desire,
Then this love is no simple flame
That mortal thought can hold or tame.
As deep within the earth's own core
The love of home burns evermore.
But what is home? I hear them say,
This never was yours anyway.
You have no birthright to this place,
Descendant from another race.
An immigrant? A pioneer?
You are no longer welcome here.
Whoever said that love made sense?
"I love" is an "imperfect" tense.
To love in vain has been Man's fate
From history to present date.
I have no grounds for dispensation,
I know I have no home or Nation.
For just one moment in the night
I am complete, my soul takes flight.
For just one moment. then it's gone
And I am once again undone.
Never complete. Never whole.
White skin and an African soul.
