THE LUCK OF THE IRISH
The heavens opened on Friday in Matabeleland, many people in the CBD and Hillside areas say this was the storm of the season. Go to the Morning Mirror website and see pics of the Twelfth Avenue bridge under water !! (Well go next week cos I have not put it up yet, gone fishing ....)
Sadly the Cancer Association's Music By Moonlight evening was washed out on the Friday and the Girls' College Blarney Brothers Saturday Musical evening was seriously under threat too !!
But with the luck of the Irish, the clouds cleared, the sodden ground dried just enough to allow for the erection of tents (Just in case) and those magical Irish men who have performed in Bulawayo so many times, took to the makeshift stage on the Girls' College sports field.
2010 was the 37th Anniversary of the Blarney Brothers!
The Blarney Brothers have been livening up Parties, Beerfests, Bar mitzvahs and other South African and Zimbabwean gala events with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary sing-along, dance-along hits.
The band has remained relatively unchanged over the years, and the current line-up comprises:
PAUL Mc ILROY - Keyboards, Banjo, Mandolin, Vocals
DAMIEN Mc ILROY - Guitar, Vocals
TONY FISHER - Bass, Violin, Vocals
It was indeed a coup de grace in reverse.
The community was suffering from three sad and sudden deaths and our spirits were at an all time low, nothing that a little bit of old Irish Blarney could not repair !!
As our revered President said, "none of us white Zimbabweans who were born in Zim are indigenous" ?..... "Even those of us whose parents and grand parents were born here are still settlers" ?? and although I heartily disagree with his .... there is a little bit of Irish in each and every one of us.
We danced and sang our sadness into a little black corner and many of those wonderful old Irish Ballads came flooding back.
Songs like "Galway Bay" ..... there was never a song like it and there never will be again !!
Of course when they sand "We all stand together" it made us realise just what steadfast community we are and will always be.
A community that has stood together for many decades and will continue to stand together for our country, our children and our commitment to justice and peace.
Sharon and Gary Fury and the Girls' College Fund raising team did an amazing job and they are to be commended on this spectacular event.
We lo forward to the next visit by the amazing Blarney Brothers.

ONANDI
WOMEN'S FESTIVAL
The Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo Chapter and several other stakeholders from Bulawayo, are organizing, for the third time, the ONANDI Women's Festival to commemorate the INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY under the theme 'EQUAL RIGHTS, EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND PROGRESS FOR ALL'. This festival will be an opportunity to celebrate womanhood and women's achievements in Zimbabwe. This festival will feature theatre performances and arts and crafts, a photography exhibition, music competition and performances and storytelling.
This festival is for women, by women and everybody is welcome.
The Festival received an AWARD at the Soroptimists International Conference in Cardiff in 2009 for the excellent activities for their International Women's Day Initiative.
The challenges and obstacles faced by women in Zimbabwe are extensive and severe. The increasing levels of violence against women, the high HIV/AIDS prevalence rates amongst young women, economic hardship and deprivation, lack of access to services and facilities and limited representation. However, in spite of all these barriers women are striving to support themselves and their families, fight for their rights and secure the future for the next generation. ONANDI wants to celebrate the substantial and often ignored contribution that Zimbabwean women make to society.
The ONANDI Festival will take place in the Bulawayo Small City Hall on Saturday 6th March 2010. The event will start with a march of women's organizations and the public starting at 9:00 from EGODINI to the Small City Hall.
Apart from theatre performances and other entertainment a number of grassroots women who made an impact on women's issues will be rewarded and honoured. The list is still open and if you have somebody to recommend you can send a nomination and short justification to contact@netconnect.co.zw.
The following female music groups have been identified to perform at the festival: Nkulumane High School Gospel Choir; New Life Ahead; Nketa Musasa Project; Simunye Simunye and Iyasa.
There will be competitions and prizes to be won such as T-shirts, radios, bags etc.
There will be stalls outside the small City Hall where women can sell their products. For more information please contact : Agnes Makoni - 011 709 027/ 09-889224
Getrude Ndebele - 0914 137 569/ 09-484433
The entrance is free.
You are invited to attend the event and participate actively for a successful Women's Day. Children and husbands are welcomed.
Come to have fun and win prizes!!!

and no questions asked for the return of my bowls bag but more importantly the bowling woods that were in the bag. Other than to a bowler these woods are of no use to anyone so please hand them in to any bowling club or let me have them back. If you leave a contact number I WILL reward you. There were numerous other bowling related items in the bag but it's the woods that I am particularly concerned about. The emblem on the four, 4 to 5 inch in diameter black woods, is a teddy bear which is a unique identifying mark. If you have any information to pass on please contact me, Roy, on (09)242210 or cell 011731695. I thank you in anticipation.
Gordon Geddes
Guardian angel to so many
Than you Gordon. You are a star !!
It is great to see the Bulawayo City Council embarking upon the repainting of street lines and parking zones.
However, please could the Council divert some of the funds they are using to purchase the very costly paint
to purchase globes for the many robots that are still not operating, or if they are, only one or two lights might
show. The Bulawayo motorist does not know the rule of "giving way to the right" and it seems that the bigger your
vehicle the more right you have to just cross the intersection without slowing down. More robot lights working will
cut down on a great deal of frustration and I am sure accidents.
Thank you. Helen Rorke.

7) BULAWAYO NEWS
INDIAN MYNAS
We have been asked to let you know that Indian Mynas have arrived in Bulawayo and have probably been here for a while unobserved. There have been sightings reported by two people this month, one of 4 birds and the other of 6 - both within City limits. The group of 6 were on the roof of the National Executor & Trust building in Josiah Tongogara Street between 11th & 12th Avenues.
Please read this poster from Geoff Lowe in Harare who is in charge of tracking the progress of these unwanted birds, and any assistance you can give us in locating them will be much appreciated.
The Common Myna (Indian Myna) Acridotheres tristis is native to India, central and southern Asia. Although introduced to parts of South Africa early last century they have only recently began a range expansion northwards and recently reached Zimbabwe.
The myna has been listed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) amongst the top 100 most invasive species in the world. Because of its aggressive nature and great adaptability to various habitats it has become a serious pest in the many parts of the world it has colonised.
Indian Mynas are very aggressive birds. They are known to evict other birds from their nests and may remove the eggs or chicks. They may also take over roosting places. Indian Mynas pose a danger to our indigenous birds especially those which use nest holes, such as starlings and barbets, which they will displace.
Although they generally prefer urban habitats they may be becoming adapted to survive in natural habitats. They may be seen in pairs or small groups, but where they are well established they will roost in very large numbers. They frequently forage on the ground and will eat fruit, insects, worms, seeds and household scraps. They nest in other birds' nests and also under the eves of buildings.
Indian Mynas spread rapidly. They are unwanted and we are advised to dispose of any we see if we can.
The range expansion into Zimbabwe and the impact on other bird species are being monitored. If you see this bird please could you provide the following information:
the date, time and place
the number of birds seen and
their behaviour, especially observed inter-actions with other birds.
Information may be sent to:
Julia Dupr e: by email dalia@netconnect.co.zw, by telephone 246269 or by hand to 12 Ilanda Gardens, Catherine Berry Drive, Ilanda, Bulawayo
or
Geoff Lowe: by email wildfire@mweb.co.zw or by fax to 04 332087.
Last weekend we went to Botswana and I don't know whether it is worth making mention, as a word of warning, that the border is no longer accepting old Pula notes and this goes for the bureau de change as well. We nearly had to turn back but were able to change US$ at a very unfavourable rate. It seems the new notes have the number at the bottom and not at the side. Old notes are only accepted at the bank of Botswana.
It is so difficult to keep up with changes everywhere at every touch and turn but maybe everyone here.is aware of this.
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Best wishes, Juliet and Charles
The Bulawayo community would like to wish the Reverend Noel Scott every happiness on his retirement to Ireland.

SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICE/FOOD FOR HOMES BULAWAYO
There seems to be some confusion over which charity runs what so I hope this will clear up any questions.
SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICE - Provides all the medical care for the pensioners in need, from 3 clinics a week to medication and ambulance. All medicines and services are provided from donations from the public. Contact Les Hunt 0913246082 or Isobel Gardiner 203102 at the office B7 coronation cottages.
FOOD FOR HOMES BULAWAYO - Provides food for the Retirement homes that are listed with us, total of 7. All the food is through donation from the public. Contact Les Hunt 0913246082
SOAP BULAWAYO - Provides food parcels for individuals living in their own homes and not a retirement home. All food is through donations from the public. Contact Dave Gills 0913284904
These 3 charities are totally independent charities with their own trustees and are not run or funded by BHN (Bulawayo Help Network).

Hope above information helps. I would appreciate some advice on what other channels I could try in Bulawayo. Is there any point in contacting the Police for e.g.? Is there a Town Hall where residents are obliged to register? Would it help to place an advert in a newspaper with wide circulation (the Chronicle was mentioned by a friend fro Zim).

please read this ....
In 2008 and 2009 figure work broke most of us in the accounting field. So, I have chosen instead to employ a Chartered Accountant who will maintain that branch of the company while I do a degree in Psychology and pursue a dream in Human Resources.
This however has only built up a database of over 200 unemployed professionals and un professionals alike, which is all too sad.
So, for the next three months I am offering these good people to you for US$20 to cover costs and only should a successful placement be made. My wish is to get them off my database and into gainful employment so they can feed and educate their children and have a better life here in Zimbabwe.
Their references have been checked thoroughly and I have personally interviewed them.
Please let them have your support. Thank you.

BATTERIES
The leading cause of battery failure and decay is a phenomenon called
sulphation. This is caused by the incomplete reconversion of lead sulphate
to sulphuric acid when a battery is charged. The sulphate gradually covers
the plates and the battery loses capacity until it no longer works. This
happens to all lead acid batteries and is the cause of about 80% of battery
failure. The situation is worse where a battery is stationary or is charged
incorrectly (inverter / boat / camping batteries). In the past it was
possible to add chemicals to the battery cells to remove the sulphate
deposits on the plates, with modern sealed batteries this is cannot be done.
It is however possible to dissolve the sulphate layer electronically with
technology developed and verified in USA.

EARLY DAYS AT HWANGE: Ted Davison, as most know, was the first warden of the newly proclaimed "Wankie Game Reserve", in 1928 and he served as the first warden for 33 years. In the foreward to Ted's marvelous book "WANKIE: The Story of a Great Game Reserve", he is described by Prime Minister Ian Smith as the person who "probably did more than anyone else in Rhodesia for the preservation and development of our wild game and the promotion of Wankie as one of the great tourist attractions of this world".
Connie Davison, Ted's wife has written some pages towards a book she hoped would be published but her writings were never published. Her son John in Pinetown, RSA, has a file of her typed pages and transcribes these for the WEZ newsletter from time to time. The first two episodes, "Pet's and "Camp Followers" were sent earlier as attachments to the newsletter, but can be resent on request.
(Note** The following paragraph was written by John Davison to accompany these episodes)
Although rightly so, Ted Davison's many years in Wankie stand as a fitting memorial to his single minded determination and love of the bush (along with a huge measure of tolerance from Connie his lifelong wife and companion), but it needs also to be recalled that after he left Main Camp he led the team of dedicated wildlife professionals and its first convoy of lorries down to and back from Imfulosi in KwaZulu Natal upon which eight White Rhino were translocated in the then longest road translocation ever of these wonderfull creatures back to Zimbabwe, four to Kyle and four to Matopas (Matobo). The species had been regionally extinct in Zimbabwe for over 90 years yet it is depicted on many widespread San ( Bushmen) rock paintings as well as being documented in hunters writings as being quite plentiful - even along the Dett Vlie where the Hwange Safari Lodge now stands. For Rhino of either species to once again become regionally extinct in Zimbabwe would be unthinkable and a huge indictment on conservationists the world over -John Davison.)
