3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES I have read your message in this Morning Mirror and agree with you whole heartily. I also want to know how some suburbs get no load shedding and some very little and why the city centre does not have any, they are involved as much we are. You cannot get reply from them when you phone as they take the phones off, what happens in an emergency I dread to think.We you do get hold of them they say they have no power who fault is that?? I too feel sorry for the shop keepers at the supermarkets like Ascot the one in Paddonhurst has the same problem although I now hear they are using generators or inverters. but to me this is not the point, also some of my neighbours are doing the same but at the end of the day what is this costing them in fuel. ZESA will not fit this bill, surely they can come up with better schedule. tonight we have had no load shedding but yesterday we were off for 8 hours and tomorrow who knows. I hope that something will come right in the end. I will put my moans to the Paddonhurst Residents Committee on Sunday as we have a meeting. Take care Alison. I fully support your idea of making these alleged persons at Zesa more compliant with the wishes of the public at large, we need to know what they are trying to do, at times the power is turned off for a matter of minutes, and then turned on. This causes damage to our electrical domestic equipment. It appears they are a power unto themselves, as opposed to bringing power to the public. They need to be brought before a meeting of concerned citizens, and made to answer for their incompetence. I'm with you on this. Regards, Rob and Ron Hopkins I heartily endorse everything you wrote in the latest Morning Mirror re the load-shedding that we've had to endure. I think I am on the same grid as yourself and the past week has been horrendous to say the least. Last week Monday I had a cut of 7 1/2 hours, Tuesday was just over 5 hours, Wednesday was another 7 hours as was Thursday. Saturday the cut lasted over 7 hours and yesterday Sunday we had no power for 8 hours. On calling and enquiring from Zesa why certain areas do not have cuts or very seldom I am told a different story each time - that certain areas here in Kumalo are attached to the University, that others are on the hospital line. As to other areas I have been told they are on the Plumtree grid, or as in the case of Suburbs ( between Leopold Takawira and going right across to the golf course), that they are on the 15th Avenue line which affects that end of town. My son who lives in that area of Suburbs seldom has a cut and I can endorse this as I go there every Monday for dinner and when driving home the entire area of Suburbs is lit up until I reach Leopold Takawira and then it's total darkness. Other excuses I get are that there are problems at Hwange - if only the public was told the truth and as the paying public we are surely entitled to honest answers. It's about time that Zesa gave some correct information for a change instead of trying to side- swipe all enquires with a million and one excuses. We pay an untold fortune for their "services" and we just get constant aggravation and frustration. It is very unfair that certain areas get no cuts at all or very little. Why should some areas suffer more than others? On the subject of services, it's about time the Municipality fixed street lights - I've not had any in years and the potholes in most suburbs are a total disgrace. One used to drive all over the roads when drunk but now a sober person does the same thing to get from A to B. I wish I knew what the Municipality is doing with our monthly payments. Add us to anything. I thought it maybe an idea for Zesa to announce that the areas who have the most paid up customers will receive the most electricity!!! Thanks Louise I live in Morningside and also have constant power cuts - since Christmas we have cuts every day - some days twice a day and most times we are without power for 4 to 8 hours of the day. Some days we go as long as 12 to 14 hours without electricity. What really annoys me is the fact that although we are actually able to access electricity only a part of each day our bill does not reflect this lesser usage. Added to this is the fact that I have not received an account for at least the last 5 years and have to go into the Zesa offices, give them my reading and then make some sort of payment even though no one at Zesa can actually tell me what I owe. As for a print out - forget about that. The whole operation is a disgrace. Yvonne No doubt ZESA will probably not formally comment, at mines meetings in Harare recently it was put forward that: Kariba is capable of 750 Mw and is producing 740 Mw. Hwange is capable of 960 Mw and producing 90 Mw. Hwange 's system is very worn out and they need US$ 600M to get the whole place running again. Right now they are only fixing what breaks down to maintain the 90 MW they're producing. Bulawayo p/s is due to get some refurbishment by the Botswanans money. They currently produce power to the nation at 8 USc per Kilowatt Hour. Which is very cheap regionally. It is due to go up shortly. Out of interest, generating yr own power comes in at around 33 USc per Kw hr for industrial sized gen sets.! Without prejudice! I couldn't agree more, the power goes off at sometimes 3:30 in the morning, comes back around 10 am then it is off AGAIN (same day) by the time I get home. I last week we had no power from tuesday through wednesday evening, it came on and off at least 9 times (what is that doing to my fridge) it came back wednesday evening at 10:45 and was off again by the time we got up on thursday. Nothing thursday till 8:30pm off again friday till evening and same again saturday and sunday. I have had to re arrange domestic arrangements just so the ironing can be done, never mind the fact that we are basically unable to cook a decent meal as the power either comes on too late or isn't on long enough to cook anything! I really need a sea kayak, although as things are going, I will probably end up in a dug out! Your offer has given my flagging spirits some encouragement though. I thought the least of my problems in planning this trip would be the actual boat, but it is proving a huge headache. I have been offered a state of the art craft by Canoe and Kayaking World in Joburg, but that would only be on loan and for transporting it up to Harare, I have been quoted a cool £600, which is far too much for me. Then of course I would have to get it back afterward and the responsibility of bringing it back in one piece would add to the difficulties of the trip. Dare I ask you to put a little piece in your lovely newspaper for me? I am quite prepared to pay for a suitable craft, although as I will get a book out of it afterward - to go with my other three adventure books - I would prefer to be 'sponsored' with a boat by some company. I know that sounds stingy, but I can't bring the boat back here to the UK, so don't really want to fork out a lot of money for one. The ideal boat would be 15 - 17 foot with at least one watertight compartment. I still have three months to find something, but oh, the time is racing by at the moment. Across Bulawayo and around the world, there are many people who look back on their memories of the YfC Willow Park Camp with happy memories. Many of today's leaders, young men & women, who did their schooling in Bulawayo would remember their school's prefect's camps or leadership development weekends held the camp's shady grounds. Lots of girls [now young ladies] will recall the 'Just Say No' retreats. What about the youth clubs, Girls Brigade, church youth groups, and other associations that used the facility over the years? Remember the grueling 'adventure course' with its ropes to climb, wall to scale, obstacles to navigate and 'flying fox' across the dam? Or how about the cross-country-course and top-of-the-hill-run that left you with burning calf-muscles? A recent clean up of some of the dormitories/cabins revealed many names of past occupants and their year of attendance (plus the occasion message preserved for posterity), inscribed on the rafters... each still remains intact. Great times eh? Perhaps there are many parents who remember the stories told of the experiences their children after their return home from Willow park events, times which assisted in the development of the next generation. From the feedback we receive, whenever we encounter former Willow Park attendees, the times down amongst shade of the trees, around the camp fire and in the main hall hold special significance in their life. NOW, WILLOW PARK NEEDS YOUR HELP. Times change, social needs have different seasons and YfC's Sandra Jones Children's Village have now become the permanent occupants of the Willow Park site. Having expanded the work beyond their continuing rounds of school programs, youth clubs, public concerts, musicians' and leaders' training programs, YfC are now providing refuge to orphans, children rescued from crisis situations and girls in need of emergency accommodation. The suburban locations previously used to house these children have now become too small and in 2009 the decision was made to move from several homes to one centralized location where all could be cared for in a more efficient and economical manner. The Willow Park premises, however, could use some refurbishment, repair and extension and so we wish to make an appeal to ex-Willow Parkers in particular and the Bulawayo community at large for practical support and thus enable us to serve the growing need amongst the new generation of our city and region. The Sandra Jones Children's Village was named after the compassionate lady - known to many of you - who worked tirelessly for many years reaching out to needy children and youth in Bulawayo as a counsellor and child psychologist and died 18 months ago from cancer. It was her desire that any child that needed care, accommodation and love, should be able to find it...and if that meant establishing a centre to help provide for those needs, then she would do all she could to help get one under way. WHAT WE NEED As a gift-funded charity, we are continually in need of finance to meet the every-day needs of caring for the children. Practically: we require... Bedding - sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets, single and cot mattresses, etc Towels, face wash-cloths, bath soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes, etc Plates, bowls, plastic or metal mugs, knife/fork/spoon sets, etc Kitchenware, cooking pots, utensils, etc Tins/drums of paint, vinyl floor tiles, bags of cement, Gardening and general repair tools General items such: as 60w light bulbs, toilet rolls, washing machine-soap powder, brooms Other necessities for assisting food supplies such as: tins of baby formula, bags of chicken feed pellets, bags of mealie meal, etc HOW TO HELP At present we have 65-70 children in care but the demand is increasing on a weekly basis. WAYNE STANTON'S RECENT BRAIN TUMOR REMOVAL Many of you will have heard that Wayne Stanton recently underwent brain surgery to remove a tumor practically the size of a tennis ball. He has now been released from Milpark hospital, after a traumatic time in ICU. Thank you to everyone for you kind words and offers of help. Wayne is still in South Africa pending radium and chemotherapy treatment, due to commence mid February. And this is where family and friends would greatly appreciate your help. We are trying to raise the necessary funds to finance the next phase of treatment. Any contribution you are able to give, however small, would be appreciated enormously.
