2) Notices PERFORMING ARTS AND THE ACADEMY CD LIBRARY The Academy CD library is open with immediate effect. There are currently around 500 CDs available but we intend to add to the stock on a regular basis. There is a $10.00 registration fee and discs may then be borrowed at $1.00 per two discs. (The registration fee is a standard charge which applies to anyone enrolling at the Academy so, if you're a registered student, then it is already paid!) The library will initially be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.00 a.m.to 4.00 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9.00 a.m.to 11.00 a.m. We intend to open the whole library to members over the next few weeks - there is a substantial collection of cassettes, a vast library of LPs for those who can still play them, several hundred books on music, a substantial collection of miniature scores and a truly amazing amount of sheet music. SOUND AND LIGHT The Academy is offering a new course on theatre, conference and function lighting and also on sound reinforcement, recording and radio/TV applications. The course will be run by Ian Chatterton and Peter Rollason and starts on Friday 29 January. It will last for 12 weeks and the cost, payable in advance, is $100.00 which will cover all hand-outs, etc.. There is no provision for casual entries, it's the whole course or nothing! The sessions will all be held at the Academy and start promptly at 3.30 p.m., finishing at 5.00 p.m. Places are limited, so book now at the Academy office. This is a wonderful opportunity, especially for young people, so do take advantage of it. COFFEE SHOP The Coffee Shop is open on weekdays from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and on Saturday mornings to early afternoon. We hope you will give it your support - Michael Bullivant says he has sampled the baguettes, toasted sandwiches, wraps and cheese cake and can thoroughly recommend them all! LESSONS The Academy is, of course, first and foremost there to teach music and there are currently vacancies for piano, guitar, flute, clarinet and voice. Please contact the office (60684/67195) for full details if you're interested - we're happy to take students from six upwards and adult students are always welcome! As well as the weekly lesson, fees cover regular theory classes and there is no charge for using library music. RIGOLETTO Friday 15 January at 6.30 p.m. Carriages: 10.00 pm. Verdi's famous opera in a lavish production from the Met conducted by James Levine with Cornell McNeil as Rigoletto, Ileana Cotrubas Gilda and Placido Domingo the Duke. "Everything made for a superb musical performance' [New York Post]. Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 Dinner will be available to order as usual. LUNCHTIME TALKS Thursday 14 January at 1.10 p.m. Lunchtime Talks resume on a weekly basis on Thursday 14 January at 1.10 p.m. when Michael Bullivant will begin a series on "The Symphony after Beethoven". This will be a follow-up to the previous series which attempted to answer the question "What is a symphony?" and will look at how Beethoven's Nine irrevocably changed a composer's approach to a symphony. Further talks will examine specific works in more detail and alternate with Peter Rollason's programmes. BLEAK HOUSE Monday 18, Thursday 21 and Monday 25 January at 7.00 p.m. The outstanding BBC production of Bleak House will be shown again (by popular request!) in three parts; the first will finish at around 10.15, Parts 2 & 3 at c.9.45. "A wonderfully rich piece of television." [The Evening Standard] "A cast that was uniformly impressive... All in all, the prospect of spending further episodes in this company feels not only enticing but entirely thrilling." [Daily Telegraph] "BBC One's Bleak House adaptation is a masterpiece." [The Observer] "... this glorious adaptation transforms soap opera into art." [The Times] Admission: $7.00 / R50.00 for the series, $3.00 / R25.00 individual evenings RETURN OF THE FIREBIRD Friday 29 January at 6.30 p.m. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Return of the Firebird includes three ballets, Scheherazade, The Firebird and Petrushka, all first seen in Paris a hundred years ago. "This indispensable DVD offers re-creations of three key Diaghilev productions from the peak of the Ballets Russes with choreography, d cor and costumes as near as possible to the original staging.... very spectacular indeed, the presentation vividly and colourfully handled, but what makes this so enjoyable is the excitement and overt eroticism of the dancing itself." PROTECTED SPECIES For the public's information, the Matobo Conservation Society has made an extract from the National Parks and Wildlife Act 14/75 in respect of protected species. We especially bring this to your member's attention as it has been observed that vendors in Bulawayo are offering for sale Orchids, Cycads, Treeferns, Flamelilys and other protected species. We have also observed the use of club moss and ferns in hanging baskets. These plants have been illegally removed from their natural environment, and this practice threatens our natural heritage. Members of the Public should inform the Police, National Parks or the Matobo Conservation Society if they come across any of these illicit dealers - and you should not buy from them! I was delighted to see you have reprinted my poem in the latest edition of the Mirror. I see someone has the taken the liberty of a few minor alterations to the original and added a final couple of lines. Kindly thank the person concerned, I feel it has improved the original text. J.A. Sturges.(Sam) 7A) GOSSIP COLUMN Whilst ruminating on the past, during one of the quieter moments of this Festive Season, I had chance to recall some of the fun times in the build up to Christmas, in my early Bulawayo years. A special event over this period was the Christmas Cheer Show, put on by the RTV Studios in Montrose, in aid of the Mayors Christmas Cheer Fund. That was TV worth watching, they were proper marathons of epic proportion. I think the show commenced somewhere around eight or nine o' clock of an evening and carried through to four in the morning, with good old Bulawayo contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars in pledges. It was marvelous to witness Bulawayo's celebrities drop their inhibitions in a good cause, Sonia Hattin with her 'Tea for one', routine was always a favourite, others like Tony Bulling, Ken Jackson, Reg Salisbury, Roy Brassington, to name a few, would offer excerpts of amusement amidst the more accomplished pieces from the show biz world. People such as Des and Dawn Lindberg, Mike Westcott and Rick Rickards, Garth Styles and Johnny Boyse, Jimmy McGroaty, Four Jacks and a Jill and even one year I remember Eddie Calvert and his 'Golden Trumpet' chipped in with Roses of Picardy. Mags I'm sure you must also have been a part of some of the shows? Amazing to see the money come rolling in and for the time (early 70's?) amounts of between 10 and 100 Dollars where not unusual from private citizens, the big-bangers like Bulawayo Bottlers would then come in towards the end with their pledges of a thousand and more, it was a great place to be and I'm sure just as generous now. I wonder too, does the younger set still keep up the tradition of wending their way to the Matopos to watch the sunrise over Rhodes Grave, with the lone piper playing on New Years morning? Stirring stuff, keep it up Bulawayo! Regards, Colin Flemming 8) GWERU AND HARARE NEWS Please Help......Can anyone advise me if there is somewhere in Harare where we can store our Motor Vehicle for 4 - 8 weeks from March next year. It will do what some call turning to sugar. In reality honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call "crystallizing".. When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey container in the hot water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in the honey. Cinnamon and Honey Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases. Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists: HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins. ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.. BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder. CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol. COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses. UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root. GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that if Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas. IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial and viral diseases. INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals. INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ' Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu. LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old. PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root. SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections. WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet. CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day. FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible.. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week. BAD BREATH: People of South America , first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day. HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it! YOUR GARDEN IN JANUARY - With the rainy season in full swing, gardeners returning from holiday this month will find that a large number of weeds will have germinated and grown swiftly, and a real effort must be made to get this problem under control before the weeds set seed. Annual weed can be hoed off, whilst perennial weeds (those with a persistent root-stock) will have to be removed by digging them out by the roots. After hoeing, don't water for 24 hours so that the weeds will be killed through lack of moisture. - January, whilst your garden is growing strongly, is a good time to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your garden. Are there areas that need attention, as there could be any number of reasons why there is nothing of interest. There may be a lack of colour, too much repetition, or a poor choice of plants. Look to replacing old and tired plants with vigorous new ones. Before you plant any new plants, improve the soil by digging in compost, superphosphate and general fertiliser. Newly planted trees and larger shrubs should be staked to prevent the roots being disturbed by wind and summer storms. - Now that the trees in your garden are in full leaf, there will be patches of deep shade developing. Take a look around, and if you see plants beneath trees that are no longer producing flowers and have grown tall and spindly, this is an indication that the plants either need to be moved to another place, or that the tree has to have some branches thinned to allowed more sunlight through to the plants. -Whilst on the subject of pruning branches, take a look at shrubs and vigorous climbers, which may also be adversely affecting their neighbours. Start by removing one or two lower branches, in stage3s, on a sunny day, so that you can see an immediate effect and not remove too much. You may also have to thin out a few higher branches so that light can filter through. - Avoid pruning shrubs that are forming buds for autumn and winter flowering, as you will lose out on the floral display in months to come. What To Do In The Garden This Month - Keep the garden neat and tidy by mowing the lawn, trimming the edges and removing weeds and old flowers. - Trim evergreen hedges sloping slightly inwards so that the sunlight and rain can reach the roots. - Allow light into the garden by removing lower branches on trees. - Lightly prune roses to encourage a good autumn flush. Fertilise and spread compost round bases, keeping away from stems. - Check the underside of leaves of roses, fuchsias, hydrangeas and dahlias for red spider mite, and spray if necessary. - Continue to check for lily borers and caterpillars on amaryllis, crinum, nerine and clivias. - Keep a vigilant eye out for lawn caterpillars. - Poinsettias will remain more compact and will produce more, slightly smaller flowers in winter, if the branches are shortened by a third. - Fertilise, then water deeply, shrubs, perennials and bulbs that flower at this time and dead-head to extend flowering. - Don't neglect indoor plants whilst you are fertilising and watering. - Water fruit trees thoroughly once a week if there has been no rain. Remove any fallen fruit and bury it to keep fruit fly infestation down. What To Sow And Plant Alyssum, cleome, cosmos, dianthus, lobelia, ,marigold, nasturtium, penstemon, salvia, verbena and vinca. Vegetables - beans, beets, brinjals, cabbages, celery, cucumbers, marrows, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, radish, sweetcorn and tomatoes. Use the talents you possess - for the woods would be a very silent place if no birds sang except for the best. --Henry Van Dyke With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable. --Thomas Foxwell Buxton Don't be afraid your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin. --Grace Hanse
