1) Editorial
Other people's memories .... Here are my own memories as a child: My father was a very good shot - rifles mainly - and he had a good collection of his own when we were little. On Saturday mornings, he'd be up at about 4 a.m. don himself a hunting hat from his collection in the passage, and go off to bag a kudu or impala to make biltong. Nothing would be wasted of these animals in those days - someone would always want the skin, we got venison galore, food for our staff, some for our dogs, he kept the good looking horns, and made tables, using the horns as legs. He made the tables himself, and they came out beautiful, with their lovely smoked glass tops and copper edges. And everyone knew my dad's biltong, I'm sure. Of course the weaponry and ammunition were freely available at T.J. Otte Gunsmiths. Those were the days when there were no serious restrictions with firearms. Around the corner from T.J. Otte's was a sweet shop. My dad used to take my sister and myself there, we'd chose sweets for ourselves, and then he'd do his own purchases. From time to time when he was working in his garage, at our home in the Suburbs, he'd say ' Carol, look behind that tin of paint', and there would be a little jar of sweeties 'left behind by the mice', for us. Every Friday afternoon we'd go for 'Tea in Town' - my ran, my mom, my sister and myself. We'd either go to Haddons or Meikles. We'd have milkshakes and cake, and we'd know everyone else in the room too, in those days. It was a real meeting place - my god-mother, Edna Byrne, who used to teach KG 1 at Hillside School - remember her? would often join us too. In 1963, at the age of 3/4, I went to 'Little People's Nursery School', which was just down the road from us in the Suburbs. I remember my first day there - I arrived in my favourite red corduroy trousers, walked through the little pedestrian gate, and slipped in the mud, so being filthy all day - good impression. Then later, Hillary Levy persuaded me to climb to the top of the jungle gym with her, and needless to say, I fell, giving myself a lovely black eye. All that on my first day - an accident waiting to happen. OK, I challenge anyone to come up with memories of when they were younger than that.
