1) Editorial STARLIGHT CLASSICS I will always remember going to a concert in Fort Worth Texas. It was a country rock concert and the audience comprised a very wide range of people. As it was our first Texas concert, we arrived early and found our "posse" quite near the front, spread our blanket, erected our chairs and as we were third worlders, worked out a roster of who would stay and guard the picnic things. But no one else stayed. Blankets were spread, items were placed in an orderly fashion, no ones blanket encroached on his neighbors, it was all extremely civilized, and the concert-goers then went off en masses to enjoy the peripheral activities before the show started !! Good gracious said Brother In Law David, come on y'all and lets get some doughnuts and a corn- dog, no one steals in Texas !! The other amazing thing that always stuck in my mind, was that, once the evening's festivities were over, there was not one tin can, not one packet or plastic bag, not one crumb, left on the lawn, it was as if no one had ever been there that night ..... Well last Saturday we went to the Johannesburg Country Club with our dear friend Matt, and although we went in a tiny bit of fear and trepidation to our first rock concert in "Big Bad Jozie" to our utter delight, was an almost exact replica of the Texan concert! Thousands of people spread their blankets, erected their chairs, and picnicked under the stars on a perfect spring night. Starlight Classics, hosted annually for Rand Merchant Bank guests and staff, this year featured the Drakensburg Boys Choir, The Joburg Symphony Orchestra, Johnny Clegg amongst an incredible array of South African Talent. It was a superb evening, conducted by choirmaster Richard Cock it featured talent before the much anticipated World Cup next year. One of the most amazing parts of the show were the "Twenty Tenors" some of them ex Drakensburg Boys, but what a hit they will be in 2010, and of course there was that incredibly talented pair Judith Septum & @ZwaiBala on stage. Wow, visitors to South Africa next year for the soccer will have some excellent safe and secure treats in store for them I can promise if last night's magical experience was anything to go by. And still talking Twenty Ten, I certainly hope Zimbabwe will get some of the rub off from the World Cup. We live there, we feel safe there, we love our country and would love to show you the sights and sounds of real Africa. We can give you lists of safe, secure hotels, Safari Lodges, Bush Camps, tours and travel guides, where you will experience the real raw Africa that still exists in Zimbabwe. I am planning an edition of the Mirror with the names and e mail addresses of all the places we know to be good value, with good food, and people who genuinely care about your comfort and safety. E mail me on magskriel@mac.com for your conducted tour around Zim next year for the World Cup Soccer and make sure you include Zimbabwe in your World Cup package. 2) Notices HAIR RAISING STORIES !! HOW COULD I FORGET ALAIN AND ETHNE WOOLFE ? I am a Bulawayo girl living in Manila, and I love all the memories you share with us. I used to go to the hairdressers at Meikles, Alain and Ethne Wolf, and would emerge braindead from their own home-cooked hair lacquer. Boy, it was sterek ! Roy Brassington did my hair in a bubbly Hepburn style for my wedding to Mike Davies at the Methodist Church, Main Street When I tell my Philippino hairdressers this they are mystified. And Dickie Arbiter, the cute radio dj , went back to England to become The Queen's press secretary for many years, now retired. Today I spent a morning at a brand spanking new Hospital having tests done on the old decaying bod, with state of the art machines that go ping. I remember how our sensible and clever docs would pull down the lower eyelid to check for anaemia, give the knee cap a brisk tap with a hammer, and there you were - fighting fit. Now my youngest boy, Ben, who was born at the Mater Dei, has given us a bonny wee grandson in Sydney, Australia. His name is Luca Ben. I have a son in Eshowe, KwaZulu, and a daughter in Edinburgh. I love reading your news. Keep up the good work. Until 'they' reduce that $500 visa charge I'm afraid you wont be seeing us back home for a long time.Strength to your arm, Missis. Best wishes, Liz Davies, on a warm wet monsoon night. We've had over 200 mls of rain in a week. Liz Davies lizallegra@yahoo.co.uk WHAT ABOUT SUE AND MARA FROM SALON JACARANDA ? OOPS HOW COULD WE POSSIBLY FORGET THEM ? MARA WAS MARRIED TO MIKE YATES OF TELEVISION FAME My friend Sue and I, both Salon Jacaranda hairdresser trainees with Alain D. Woolf, thoroughly enjoyed your hair article. It brought back many fond memories! I used to do Joy Cameron-Dow's hair and nails free of charge in exchange of TV advertising. Joy introduced me to Mike Yeates on a blind date. By the way Mike survived his massive heart attack, he's back at work near our daughter Carol Lynn in Wales. Jill is doing fine and their son Michael growing up into a bright handsome young man. Our 3 daughters are all in the UK and I'll be going to see them next month on my way to my International Jenkins Staff Teacher training in fine art in Berlin. I have converted my art studio into a self-catering flat (see attached) and I'm even willing to throw in a free oil painting class for stays of one week or more. We are located in the Cumberland Plateau of the Appalachian Mountain Range one and a half hours from Knoxville and 2 and a half hours from Nashville in Tennessee. Airport transfers can be arranged if required. Mara Yeates-Trumbo Cadisama@earthlink.net Subject: Information for Seminar on "No Disease is incurable" by Dr. Michelle Strydom. DEAR FRIENDS I would like to ask you all to take a moment to read this letter. To read it with open eyes and hearts. Please understand that this is not to scare you but to create an awareness of Cancer. Cancer is a disease that affects all creeds, nations, ages and genders. Most people are afraid to talk about Cancer, to acknowledge it and to accept it. I have met seven beautiful women recently, all of whom have survived cancer! They are women you would meet in the street and never know they had cancer. They all claim the right of being survivors not victims! Each and every one of them have fought the hardest battle in their lives, and have beaten cancer! Yes they each have their own story to tell, each completely different, but with the same ending.........'I am a SURVIVOR!' Do I feel sorry for these women? Yes I do but then again on the other hand I feel a sense of joy for them as they won the battle. There are millions of people (men, women and children) in this world, who have fought the battle, and sadly lost, however there are millions more fighting the battle and who will win! As we all know October is the month for Breast Cancer awareness, and to celebrate the Strength, the positive thinking and the battles won, and for this reason we are having a Bulawayo Mastectomy Cancer Awareness Month. To be able to raise funds to assist those who are less fortunate than us. Your donations would be gratefully appreciated as this would help the Mastectomy Ladies to continue with their counseling and support, to all in need of it. Our fundraising events include, volleyball, tennis and golf all held at the Bulawayo Country Club, followed by a beautiful Halloween dinner dance at the end of October. As mentioned earlier all the funds will go towards the Bulawayo Mastectomy Support Group. If you wish to assist in any way please do not hesitate to contact myself on 474905 or 011 638 962 or 023 666 777. Thanking you on behalf of the Bulawayo Mastectomy Support Group. The sets and costumes are so lavish that the unveiling of the Triumphal Scene in Act II prompts enthusiastic applause. Placido Domingo sings superbly throughout, a believable hero, and Aprile Millo's poise as well as her power are impressive, not least in the Nile Scene. Dolora Zajick is a vibrant, powerful Amneris and Sherrill Milnes is a magnificent Amonasro. Luxury casting brings Paata Burchuladze as Ramfis and Levine is in his element, drawing warm and dramatic playing from his formidable team." [The Penguin Guide] Tickets: US$3.00/R25.00, free to members. Dinner is available to order, details from the Academy. In association with the Alliance Fran aise de Bulawayo Tuesday 29 September. French Cello/Accordion Duo Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. 'Fran ois Salque is a major personality in the worlds of the cello and chamber music and the young accordionist Vincent Peirani has already appeared throughout the world with many of the great figures of jazz. Their sensibility, their creativity and their exceptional virtuosity have been recognised by a number of international awards. This concert will be an invitation to a journey in the world of improvisation and of music without frontiers, personal and staggering, inspired by different traditions.' The programme will include: The Song of the Birds (traditional Catalan melody); David Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody; Jocelyn Mienniel: Baikal; Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen; Samuel Strouk: Yiddish; Vincent Peirani: Suite; St phane Grappelli: Medley Booking at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music from Monday 14 September. Tickets: US$5.00/R40.00, free to members. Friday 9 October. Gilbert & Sullivan: Patience Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Patience is perhaps one of the less well-known G&S operas but the satire on Oscar Wilde is just as amusing today as it was more than a century ago. The aesthetic poet Bunthone loves Patience, the milkmaid, who rejects him but meanwhile he has captured the hearts of every other maiden in the village. When amorous army officers arrive to be spurned by these love-sick maidens and the idyllic poet Grosvenor proposes to Patience, all manner of Gilbertian complications ensue. This Australian Opera production is traditional in style and features the late Heather Begg as the cello-playing Lady Jane amongst "a cast that simply could not be bettered." WARNING / ALERT - DOGS TO ZIMBABWE On Tuesday 01 September, Christine Kuch of the National Council received a telephone call around 09h10 from a female who didn't give her name but said she was enquiring on behalf of a friend of hers how to get hold of guard dogs to send them to Zimbabwe. The woman said she was phoning on behalf of a very good friend of hers who was setting up a new business sending guard dogs across the border. It was a difficult call in that the aim was to obtain as much information as possible whilst not scaring the caller off. She would not - absolutely not - give the name of the person or company/business. She repeated it was a close friend and said she would ask him to phone us which predictably has not happened. When pushed as to why the person would not contact the SPCA directly but was working via herself, a third party, she told me he was a very busy man. The best we can do is to send out an alert and ask once again (local newspapers, your newsletter) that people do not give dogs away. We note web sites with dogs 'looking for a good home' including so-called welfare web sites doing so. Please ask everyone to be aware that individuals on the lookout for dogs are not transparent, do deceive people and there are no comebacks once animals have been handed over. Please revisit our media statement on www.nspca.co.za under MEDIA RELEASES entitled 'Giveaway pets' for recent warnings that dogs are being taken to Zimbabwe for use as breeders or hunting dogs. With kind regards Chris Kuch 7) BULAWAYO NEWS WHITESTONE SCHOOL Please note that we have at long last been able to update our Website. Take a look - www.whitestoneschool.co.zw I loved your account of the old times, basically on the farm our equivalent of junk food was about a mile walk to the veggie garden (that was where the borehole happened to be!!!!) to scout around for a ripe tomato or cucumber, Other than that we walked through the bush with the staff's children and were taught about all sorts of wild fruit the favourite of course being 'snot apples' I do remember when I was a teenager (65 on Friday last week so a long time ago) the first packet of crisps we ate them with great excitement in the 'Ford fairlane" on the way back to the farm 60kms away. They were so greasy and yuk it has taken me the best part of 50 years to be able to eat plain salted crisps without feeling billous!!!!!!! It really was a stress free life and we survived very well without all the privileges of today. My Dad as was the case in those days sprayed everything with DDT and we all 6 of us have reached and passed 60 ???? Now they boffins freak with the mention of such dreadful chemicals. maybe the junk food is the problem. Thanks for all you do to keep us updated and amused, Love to you all Jean and Tony Clarke PARK PROGRESS LAST SATURDAY hey had a small cleanup around the fountain area weeding and raking up leaves as well as trimming some overgrown shrubs on the theatre side. We believe a Byo (or Matabeleland) Welsh Society was formed in 1894 or thereabouts but don't know how long it existed or if it is still in existence. A name that has cropped up in Martin's research is a Desmond Johnson as having had something to do with such a Society. But, we cannot trace him. Do you know anything about a Welsh Society in Bulawayo, now or in the past? A thought is that Paddy Vickery might know. I don't have contact details for Paddy but Judy thought that, as you and Paddy are close, you might be able to get in touch with her on the subject. As a guide, I am sending to you separately an attachment of Martin's findings from his internet research. Incidentally, I have been in touch with Jane Morris of AmaBooks, Byo, who is mentioned in the findings but she knows nothing about the Byo Welsh Scty and neither does the Pioneer Society in Byo who she consulted. Similarly, the Historical Society in Harare (Mike Kimberley of Honey & Blankenberg) knows nothing, and there is no record of anything Welsh (let alone a Byo Welsh Scty) at the National Archives. I would be grateful for any information you may have. If you need them, my Harare tel. nos are 252572 and 790217. We expect carers to look after our clients with the same compassion as they would a member of their own family by helping them perform the activities of daily living. The degree of care depends very much on individual circumstances and carers are given detailed information before agreeing to accept a position. The daily rate ranges between £65.00 and £95.00 and travel expenses are paid by the client. Before being registered as carers with our agency applicants are required to undergo a 5 day in- house induction and training course supported by an in-house ongoing training programme advising carers on all aspects of the job within the confines of the client's home. We provide round the clock support and guidance should any problems arise whilst on an assignment. Requirements are:- British/EU Passport or Right ofAbode/Ancestral Visa Qualities needed:- Caring relies on your attitude and ability to be compassionate, patient and understanding. Certain qualities make a better carer, ie. Flexibility, cheerfulness and a good sense of humour. If you don't, you're hurting yourself and your email buddies. By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with www.snopes.com http://www.snopes.com and/or www.truthorfiction.com http://www.truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Advice from Snopes.com Very important! 1) Any time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck, good luck, you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it, or whatever, it almost always has an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and E-Mails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' E-Mail addresses to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus ....that's E-mail tracking and they're playing on our conscience. These people don't care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease - "how would you feel if that was your child"....E-mail Tracking!!! Ignore them and don't participate! 2) Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of E-Mail is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers - - to validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes. You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the future! If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of E-Mail, now you know why you get so much SPAM! Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound!...or make you feel guilty if you don't!...it's all about getting email addresses - nothing more! You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT! Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, you are helping the spammers get rich! Let's don't make it easy for them! Also: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to White House, Congress or any other organization - i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you're just helping the Email trackers. Please read the full story here: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.asp http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.asp Also, when forwarding mail, delete the senders name and e-mail address before forwarding. Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures. --John F. Kennedy Don't be content in your life just to do no wrong. Be prepared every day to try and do some good. - -Sir Nicolas Winton We have a calling. We are the people who know what we need. What we need surrounds us. What we need is each other. And when we act together, we will find Our Way. --John McKnight
