1) Editorial A HAIRBRUSH AWAY FROM SANITY ! A girl always has time to think when a girl is drying her hair !! After all it is a daily chore with my fine hair, and it is only during power cuts that I have to resort to yesterday's hair !! During an idle moment, I worked out that I must have spent three thousand nine hundred and thirty three hours recurring drying my hair during my life time !! Hair always plays a big part in a Girl's life ....... Mum had fiery red hair like her sister Corynne and the Morton twins were always noticeable at Chaplin School and in the various towns where Grandfather "Stomp" Morton was Mine Manager. Mum taught me a thing or two about hair i.e. hair brushes need to be washed every Sunday !! (Yawn) That must go into the Jilly Cooper Look Alike Book I am writing called "Life's Too Short!) But remember in THOSE days, we did not wash out hair every day, we probably washed it just once a week. When I was young Mother would go to the hairdresser every week on a Friday, come rain or shine ! The only time she had her hair washed was by the stylist and she would spend an euphoric hour reading women's magazines under the hair dryer (remember those awful hooded jobs that blew holes in your scalp and burnt your hairline !!) Eeek. The very worst were those hair rollers, they were actually metal as we were born before plastic was invented I think. !! The stylist (who was also your greatest friend and indeed confidant ) would take a giant spike and stick it through one of the tiny holes in each roller, normally straight into the scalp !! One always had to mindful of one's stylist as she /he had many items of torture at their disposal if not showered with chocloates and gifts ! Those perm rollers and lotion was a killer, that bathing cap with holes in that they used to use to prepare highlights was an excruciating weapon and they would burn, believe me they would burn - those nasty metal rollers. We did not have one of the nifty hand-held hair dryers used nowadays, if one did not go to the hairdresser, one put ones' own rollers in laboriously, although it was generally a two person affair, and then one would sit in the sun and wait for the hair to dry... Now that is just like watching paint dry, but then life was a lot more relaxed in those days. Mum bought me an actual HOOD dryer for my sixteenth birthday, but it had a wobbly pole which made it lean to the side, so a stiff neck always ensued after those laborious hair drying sessions. Hair styles have changed much over my particular many years ... being on TV a lot, I had to attend the hair dresser a lot, and two of my dearest friends were Roy and Raymond Brassington, who also became famous in those days and who could style a mean hair style !! My worst style was not the Dusty Springfield style nor the Cher style but that Audrey Hepburn style where one carried around a giant bouquet of curls on the top of ones head. That was painful, all those pins and clips stuck into your head, sometimes a "hairpiece" (today called an "extension" ) would be stuck in for more volume, and that hair style had to last one for a number of days. My friend Avril would wrap toilet paper round her curls on retiring to bed,but she was not married in those days ! Each curl was individually and with great intricacy curled and fixed securely enough to even withstand a rock and roll session !! Those hair extensions were a bit dodgy, if it was real human hair, whose hair was it once upon a time ?? They did not have imitation hair in those days .... Unfortunately we did not inherit Mum's beautiful red mop, and dull mousey brown is easy to match ! I remember with great fondness Darryl McNeilage who was one of the top stylists, the beautiful Pia, and Yvonne from Mona Lis aamongst many great and colourful characters. Another awful product of the good old bad old days was hair spray "Lacquer" it was disgusting, the smell could anesthetize one for hours but it sure "Stuck like crazy" nothing, not even a tornado, could unstick those curls once "lacquer" had been liberally applied. We went through some torrid hair experiences like the "teazing" or back combing stage .... now this particular cult would result in your hair taking on a torpedo shape, a la Helen whogeemaflab, it was great for small people, as with a teazed hairdo and those platform shoes we used to wear, we could aspire to greater heights quite successfully. ! But back to washing the hair brushes, every week on a Sunday (yawn) Mother would carefully and painfully remove every single loose hair from the hair brush and then carefully and painfully, take the clump of hair out to the garden "to help the birds make their nests " ... HeeHoo has his favourite hairbrush that he values inordinately. It is plastic with stiff bristles and although I have bought him brushes from all over the world, nothing quite satisfies his head of hair like his old plastic brush. It is so old and has actually broken into three pieces and I have to hide it from the chambermaid if we stay in a posh hotel...... But life was easy in those days, a girl probably only had one brush and one comb - nowadays one has to have several round brushes in different sizes and if one's hair is washed every single day, surely the brushes do not need to be washed every Sunday Mother Dear ?? 2) Notices People of Bulawayo It's time to say Thank You On 16 May 09 over 1000 people gathered together to clean our city The City Of Kings The day was a day of unity and pride, when our citizens of all ages toiled to clean, sweep and remove the rubbish choking our streets. Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. Friday 11 September. Minkus: La Bayad re - Ballet Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. "La Bayad re ('The Temple Dancer') finds Petipa at his peak and his invention throughout is constantly and engagingly fresh. Not only does he create dance movements that are graceful and sparklingly athletic for the principal dancers but the corps de ballet are given superb ensembles, like the spectacular Appearance of the Shades in Act II.. The dancing in this Covent Garden production is superlative with Altynai Asylmuratova ravishing as Nikiya and Darcey Bussell a particularly seductive Gamzatti. The corps de ballet are eye-catchingly graceful and elegantly precise.' [The Penguin Guide] Mikhail Baryshnikov commented on the Act II Kingdom of Shades scene that it is "one of the great, if not the greatest, classical works in the history of ballet. It is Petipa's idea of life in the beyond... Poetically it is unmatched in the classical repertory." Admission: US$3.00 / R25.00. Free to members. Dinner is available to order and, as the ballet takes place "in the India of legend", to complement it there will be an Indian menu for the evening: chicken skewers (chicken breast marinated in tumeric and lemon and herb)'; chicken curry and rice, served with Indian condiments (tomato and onion salsa, cucumber and yoghurt salsa and, of course, a chilli salsa for those who like it hot); fresh fruit salad and ice-cream. Cost US$10.00, bookings to the Academy (60684/67195) or to music@gatorzw.co.uk no later than lunchtime on Thursday 10 September. Thursday 17 September : Lunchtime Talk Richard Hartnack: Tchaikovsky - 1. Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. Thursday 24 September : Lunchtime Talk Peter Rollason. Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. Friday 25 September: Verdi: A da Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.15 p.m. "Recorded live at the Met in October 1988, James Levine's powerful and starrily cast DVD brings a grandly traditional staging.. The sets and costumes are so lavish that the unveiling of the Triumphal Scene in Act II prompts enthusiastic applause. Placido Domingo sings superbly throughout, a believable hero, and Aprile Millo's poise as well as her power are impressive, not least in the Nile Scene. Dolora Zajick is a vibrant, powerful Amneris and Sherrill Milnes is a magnificent Amonasro. Luxury casting brings Paata Burchuladze as Ramfis and Levine is in his element, drawing warm and dramatic playing from his formidable team." [The Penguin Guide] Tickets: US$3.00/R25.00, free to members. Dinner is available to order, details from the Academy nearer the time. In association with the Alliance Fran aise de Bulawayo Tuesday 29 September. French Cello/Accordion Duo Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. 'Fran ois Salque is a major personality in the worlds of the cello and chamber music and the young accordionist Vincent Peirani has already appeared throughout the world with many of the great figures of jazz. Their sensibility, their creativity and their exceptional virtuosity have been recognised by a number of international awards. This concert will be an invitation to a journey in the world of improvisation and of music without frontiers, personal and staggering, inspired by different traditions.' The programme will include: The Song of the Birds (traditional Catalan melody); David Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody; Jocelyn Mienniel: Baikal; Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen; Samuel Strouk: Yiddish; Vincent Peirani: Suite; St phane Grappelli: Medley Booking at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music from Monday 14 September. Tickets: US$5.00/R40.00, free to members. Friday 9 October. Gilbert & Sullivan: Patience Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Patience is perhaps one of the less well-known G&S operas but the satire on Oscar Wilde is just as amusing today as it was more than a century ago. The aesthetic poet Bunthone loves Patience, the milkmaid, who rejects him but meanwhile he has captured the hearts of every other maiden in the village. When amorous army officers arrive to be spurned by these love-sick maidens and the idyllic poet Grosvenor proposes to Patience, all manner of Gilbertian complications ensue. This Australian Opera production is traditional in style and features the late Heather Begg as the cello-playing Lady Jane amongst "a cast that simply could not be bettered." [Sydney Morning Herald] Tickets: US$3.00/R25.00, free to members. Dinner is available to order, details from the Academy nearer the time. Tuesday 13 October. Coady Green (piano) Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Coady Green will be well remembered in Bulawayo for his appearances in last year's festival and we are delighted to welcome him back with a very generous programme that includes: Beethoven: Fantasy Op 77; Schubert: Sonata A major D664; Liszt: Pens e des morts, Miserere apr s Palestrina and Fun railles; Haydn: Adagio in F major, Hob.XVII:9 and Variations in F minor, Hob XVII:6; Mendelssohn: Three Etudes Op 104b; Carl Vine: Piano Sonata No.1 Booking at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music from Monday 28 September. I have within the last month had the misfortune to attend the Emergency Ward at Mater Dei on two occassions; once in the very very early hours of the morning and the other about 7 am. On both occassions with an acute asthma attack. The treatment and attention I received from the duty doctors and emergency staff was outstanding on each time. On the second visit Sister Zulu was on duty. I fully agree with JANE'S comments. Unlike JANE, I was hospitalised on both occassions direct from the emergency ward. The service, attention, care, and professionalism from the nursing staff was outstanding. They can only be congratulated. Mater Dei also has to be one of the cleanest hospitals I have ever seen. There seem to be too many people who think that medical services are only available in South Africa. Keep it up Mater Dei. Peter Wood ROSES TO MERILYN WHO TAKES HER TRUCK EVERY WEEKEND, AND WITH A GANG OF VOLUNTEERS, CLEANS UP THE SHOPPING CENTRES AND UGLY AREAS IN THE DOUGLASDALE, HILLSIDE AND BURNSIDE AREAS. THANK YOU MERILYN FROM THE CITIZENS OF BULAWAYO The Lions Club of Matopos wishes to thank everyone who participated at their Spring Fair. We hope you enjoyed yourselves. Whilst the buying public was a bit thin on the ground it seems that the general concensus is that we all try again. We will certainly look into this and at ways to improve things. Also many thanks for all Toys for Joy donations.Especially to Jackie who has sent a parcel from across the ocean. God Bless you all. 'Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree' Quotation from a poem by Joyce Kilmer 1888 - 1918 IN THE DEMISE OF TREES They've felled at least eighteen trees near us. Trees in their prime Flowering time Providing birds, wasps and bees With nectar from the flowering trees. When at their best At time of nest A time of need With fledglings to feed. The glossy starlings have left us Red-winged and wattled too. No longer their fluting cries greet us As round and about they flew. Utterly confused and dejected They fled to pastures new. Who is to pay for this destruction The instigators of this crime? Surely those who made their complaints Who aired their views without thought And left us all distraught. Not us, who had no say Who were given no chance to say nay. Sticky shoes indeed! Carpets ruined! Surely shoes left at entrance door Left no mark on any floor. For such a short time those flowers bloom. Why cause their doom When they supply such bounty To bright sunbirds jeweled beauty. In summer's heat trees gave abundant shade Flowers beneath them never fade. They gave us oxygen, gave their share To our life-giving, necessary air. And now when summer's hottest heat Upon those flats relentless beat Fans will be the order of the day (Hopefully no cuts. No buts !) And residents will pay More for electricity Why your simplicity? Can't you look ahead To the hot days instead. All your flowers will fade Plants wither and die A sigh! A drought is predicted this season All the more reason For El Nino's on its way. New plantings will battle to survive the heat And its relentless beat. Water scarce? The desert's on its way? You've aided its' cause Without pause. A little more thought and application Would save a nasty situation. And why at this time when money is tight Expediting our plight. This most unnecessary expense It just does not make any sense. What more can we say Good day. The deed is done. We're overcome In every way. But wait! The trees will have their revenge For their roots will decompose and decay And white ants underground have full sway. The ground level will subside. And cracks open wide. Far more than is evident today For it's been known before That in drought years of yore The water table fell Ground sub-sided pell-mell. Cracks in houses became worse Demanding greater strain on the purse. So why didn't you think of these taxes Before applying your axes? We will forever miss those trees And the breezes disturbing their leaves. Their silhouettes against the evening sky Those delicate tracery of lines. God's work of beauty defines To the human eye. Oh why, why, why Did you deprive Their need to survive? They could still be alive Dear God, why? And now please clean up this mess And save us further from distress Adding to our consternation At this needless desolation. T.H. Despite accepting 2009 subs Prosperity has failed to pay out many of its Zimbabwean members' legitimate claims. This has not only resulted in many people being left significantly out of pocket but also being black-listed with SA medical institutions - and therefore UNABLE to register on other medical aid schemes! A group of Zimbabwean members have decided to do something about it. We are not going to let them get away with what amounts to daylight robbery and we are therefore going public with our grievances (in several different ways). Please could anyone who has a Prosperity story that they would like to tell send a SHORT SUMMARY to the email address below. Or please just send the following (to add to our growing list!): Member name, Membership number, Amount paid in subs for 2009, and total amount owed by Prosperity, i.e the amount Prosperity agreed is owing by them. Please send your information urgently to cards@africansally.co.zw WELL DONE PAULA DAKIN Paula Dakin, one of our up & coming riders, has been invited to compete in the FEI (Equestrian) World Challenge to be held later in the year in Santiago, Chile. Paula's invitation comes on the strength of her winning the Zimbabwe competition & coming 3rd in the zonal competition. She competed against riders from the Southern African region; some 60 odd competitors.Paula will compete on borrowed horses, as will all the finalists. Paula has been a stalwart of the local branch of the Horse Society & competes on a regular basis all round the country, & in South Africa. Paula is the first Bulawayan to have achieved this honour! Well done Paula FUND RAISING NEEDED THOUGH BY SOME KIND EQUESTRIAN LOVERS PAULAS BACKGROUND I was born in Bulawayo, and went to school at Whitestone and Girls College. I started riding when I was 13 years old at Greyville Equestrian Centre with the late Vivian Vassilieff. My parents purchased my first pony from her called Miss Minx, and I went to my first Pony Club show with this pony and came home with four trophies. I completed all my Pony Club tests and passed my 'A' test in 02; I was the last candidate to do this exam in Zimbabwe. This test was extensive, being tested by a vet and other officials. I then left Greyville and went to Balenci Park which was run by Cindy Gaines-Burrill, I must have been 16 years old at the time. I then purchased my first 'horse' called Ballynakill, and then I got The Wineman, who I still have to this day. The Wineman won me many trophies; my first big win was in 01 when we won 'Horse of the Year' here in Bulawayo. He also won again in 03. In 05 The Wineman won National Champion in Harare, and also Most Points at Nationals the same year. My other horse 'Legionnaire' won 'Horse of the Year' in 07 and 09, and also won National Champion in 06 and 08, he also won most points 06 & 08. The Wineman and Legionnaire and also American Dry have all won trophies at Trade Fair, Horse of the Year shows. Legionnaire won the Victor Ludorum at Easter Festival Johannesburg, in 08 in his grade. I have ridden in the team at the Easter Festival in Johannesburg for the past three years, the first year we won, the second year came third and this year we won again. I have ridden in Lusaka, Gaborone, Johannesburg and Nairobi. I went to ride in Kenya in 06 and rode 4 different horses, I went with two other Zimbabwe girls, and we had a great time and all came home with rosettes. My horse Legionnaire and I won my place to go to Santiago de Chile in November this year to ride in the World FEI show jumping finals. FEI stands for Federation Equestrian International. This is a once in a lifetime achievement for me. I have to date raised my airfare, my trainer Penny Crockarts airfare, the hotel costs and am still trying to raise everyday living money, about US$1000. I would appreciate any assistance towards my final target. The Bass fishing has come on at Mayfair dam and at Mananda dam in the last few weeks, with the spawning unfortunately the Bass are the targets, Please guy's limit your catch, these fish need to bread, with the water levels dropping Bass have a hard enough time making nests that will succeed, without us plucking them off the nest, CATCH AND RELEASE. The Bream will start to feed now that the warmer weather is moving in and believe me there are going to be very big Nilo's caught this year, Remember after the first rain's the Rendali's will be out and the flying ant hunt is on, the Barbel fishing was also good at Mananda, As Joe and Vic Ireland caught good Bass and Barbel in the B.L.T.C monthly this last weekend. Cheers Neville Ford I am a PhD student of English linguistics at university of Zurich, Switzerland. In my thesis I want to investigate the variety of English spoken by white Zimbabweans (Rhodesians). I am particularly interested in white Zimbabweans who have relocated to Britain. I was wondering if you could advise me where I could contact the members of the white Zimbabwean community living in Britain. I would like to carry out interviews with them focusing on the variety of English spoken by them and include the findings into my PhD thesis. I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice in this matter, or point me in the right direction. Assumptions told me I should look for this important (to me) Nursing Home on a list of - first - Bulawayo Hospitals...and then - second - on a list of Zimbabwean Nursing Homes/Hospitals. All to no avail. Apparently I was not born! Leastways not in a Sister Roux nursing home (hospital). And subsequently I have searched everywhere for some mention of the nursing home or even Sister Roux herself. Mystery? How can it be. But then this was Rhodesia then, and Zimbabwe now so I guess anything is possible. Not wanting to give up, I searched and then someone suggested I contact your group, your newspaper and...more importantly YOU. Can you shed any light on the missing Sister Roux, the missing Sister Roux Nursing Home and, any records, photographs etc of the disappearing centre. CARAVAN WANTED - GOOD CONDITION TEL : 2428 / 76394 CELL : 0912896752 19) TIDBITS MEETING OF ABUZ ACTION COMMITTEE (CHAIRMAN T.SCHULTZ AND CEO L.MLILO) WITH TRAFFIC CO-ORDINATOR SUPERINTENDENT S.DUBE AND TRAFFIC PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER SERGEANT NKALA AT SOUTHAMPTON HOUSE ON THURSDAY 27 AUGUST 08 AT 2PM. CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS-ROBOTS NOT WORKING Supt Dube was advised that some ABUZ members were fined for proceeding through robots that were not working. We raised a concern about the difficulty experienced by motorists in determining if robots at an intersection are working in all directions. There are instances where robots work in one direction only. This is dangerous and is a recipe for a serious accident; it would also be difficult to apportion blame. Cognizance was taken, that the current situation is caused by ZESA load-shedding, faults, and City Councils inability to currently maintain the robots. In view of this, we suggested that we approach the City Council to switch off robots at intersections where only some lights are working, and to erect signs stating 'robots not working' This should be maintained until City Council can afford to repair the same. Supt Dube supported this suggestion Supt Dube confirms the following. Where robots are not working, the public should treat this intersection as a controlled one, and as such they must approach the intersection with care and proceed to give way to traffic on their right. It is noted that many Zimbabwean motorists are adopting the South African road rule, where motorist at the intersection first, have the right of way. This is not correct, and is in contravention Zimbabwean road traffic laws. Please take note of this. Traffic details should not fine or detain any body, if they follow the foregoing. Supt Dube will advise his staff of the same. SPOT FINES. Supt Dube does not agree with the statement contained in the recent Jag Alert circulated to ABUZ members which stated there is no such thing as spot fines. He states that spot fines are indeed legal. However it was pointed out to him that some of the traffic details are not acting in accordance with laid down procedure. For avoidance of doubt, Superintendent Dube has confirmed the following to be the correct procedure: For minor traffic offences that do not require Court proceedings and attract a fine only. If you are stopped by the traffic police on suspicion that you have violated a minor traffic law, as referred to above, the police detail is entitled to invite you to pay a spot fine there and then. If you agree that you have violated the traffic law or if you do not want to go to the bother of appearing in Court, you may pay this spot fine. However you have a right to not to pay the spot fine for reasons that might include the fact that you do not have the cash on you. In instances such as this, the traffic detail is obliged to issue you with a Form 265. This form will allow you to pay the fine within seven days of receipt of the same or you can opt to defend yourself in Court. 'The choice is yours' The traffic detail does not have the right to intimidate you in any manner. The traffic detail does not have the right to arrest you, should you opt to go to Court, or if you wish to pay Cont/ Page 2 the fine within the stipulated period. IN-BUILT REFLECTORS. Under the National Schedule of Traffic Deposit Fines, failure to display a red rear reflector and or a white front reflector (all 35mm in diameter), attracts a fine of USD 10 for each offence. Modern cars have built in reflectors and therefore do comply with the law. Supt Dube concurred that there is a need to educate his officers on this issue. COMMUNICATIION It has been agreed that there is an ongoing need to for constructive communications between the police and the public. ABUZ will endeavor to support the initiative and so will Supt Dube. It has also been agreed that if any of ABUZ members feel they are being treated unfairly and unlawfully, in the context of the issues raised herein, then they should immediately phone Lucky on his land line or cell phone. He will in turn contact Supt Dube or his second in charge, they have promised to look into the matter there and then and to take whatever action is required.
