1) Editorial A LABOUR OF LOVE ... HeeHoo is doing "stock take" this weekend, a momentous occasion in every Zimbabwe company !! Some say there is not much point in taking stock cos someone already took it !! and it is always a tense and laborious process whichever way one looks at it. However I noticed that HeeHoo was reminiscing (rather laboriously I thought) on the good old days, when Charlie would bake chocolate cakes for stock take weekend...... Now there is no way on earth that I could even dream of emulating Charlie's chocolate cakes,....in fact it would be sacrilege to even try. So far I have avoided baking, it has been 18 months now since Charlie died, but I suppose my official period of mourning for my Best Friend has to end sometime. And so out came the cookery books, Charlie had his own cookery books but I avoided those with misty eyes . I used to bake, I mean I even taught Charlie to bake, but that was a long time ago. Fortunately HeeHoo and I are perpetually dieting and all the sproggets have left home, so the need to bake has passed and lets face it, in emergency its a lot easier to run down to Bertha at Farm Fresh or Jacqui at Marys and grab one of their delicious strawberry cheesecakes or black forest gâteaux !! Now I have a whole shelf full of cookery books. Cavalcade 1984 - Golden JUbilee from the Women's Zionist Council, the C.B.C. Fiftieth Jubilee, Shearly Cripps, Women's' Institute 1925 to 1995, The Blond Chicana Brides Mexican Cookbook, Cooking in Zimbabwe with the Rotary Anns of Bulawayo South, King George IV Memorial School recipe book, my dear departed Mums own hand written cookery book, Hearte a La Carte, loads of Delias, loads of Jaimie Olivers, my all time favourite which was the Lions Club of Marlborough with recipes from my Aunty Corynne Gardner, Mrs Beeton even !! (Remember take one turkey, stuff it with one duck, stuff that with one chicken etc ..... eeek !!!) It took me hours to get through the books especially the cake books, I could not find my specs but I could still see the pictures thank goodness. There was the train cake that I made for Gary for his fourth birthday, there was the Barbie Doll cake I made for Joanne's sixth birthday, there was the bride doll cake I made for Robyn ..... sob But I still could not find my specs to read the ingredients, so decided to avoid all cookery books altogether and take to the famous google cookery book. (Its easier to make the font bigger on the lap top than to seek endlessly for said spectacles !) I chose a chocolate brownie recipe that looked easy, it also featured a video for children ... aah this was the one, if kids can make brownies so can I ! Out with the apron, the scale that I expected Charlie to use but which needed at least a BSC in Scientific Instrumentation to work out, turned on the oven and just simply followed the instructions. Mmmmm chocolate brownies, my favourite, but oops HeeHoo is going to get furious that there is melted chocolate on my keyboard !! Hurriedly cleaning the keyboard I then beat the eggs, darn, now there's beaten egg and sugar all over the keyboard ..... maybe I should have used a recipe book after all. I always knew where my favourite banana brad recipe was by the smell of bananas emanating from the bookshelf so I should have been prepared..... Crisis over, keyboard fairly clean, (but if he ever asks me why I have chocolate in my keyboard I shall remind him about the time he had avocado in his watch !!) I made the font really big and put on the sound and placed the computer as far away as possible from the baking area to be sure to be sure !! Smooth shining chocolate brownie mixture safely poured into pan, oh this cooking is a breeze !! I now checked the oven but the temperature was a bit low, then I remembered Charlie's trick of sticking the broom between the two handles cos the door did not close properly, darn, looks like those little blighters have started to flop in the middle..... maybe I can put a bit more icing in the middle than on the sides, well, it will have to be quite a bit more icing .... A quick check of the e mails while little darlings browning happily, oops, forgot the timer, so perhaps a tad over cooked ? Nah ... they will be so busy counting stock, they will never notice that they should have been brownies and not very crisp choc chip cookies !! 2) Notices Help us clean up the park on Saturday 5th September. Meet at the fountain at 8 a.m. with your brooms, spades etc. Our members are at present going to hotels, Bulawayo Bottlers and Bakers Inns to see if they can sponsor the day for us to feed about 100 volunteers. Friday 11 September. Minkus: La Bayad re - Ballet Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. "La Bayad re (which may be translated as 'The Temple Dancer') finds Petipa at his peak and his invention throughout is constantly and engagingly fresh. Not only does he create dance movements that are graceful and sparklingly athletic for the principal dancers but the corps de ballet are given superb ensembles, like the spectacular Appearance of the Shades in Act II.. The dancing in this Covent Garden production is superlative with Altynai Asylmuratova ravishing as Nikiya and Darcey Bussell a particularly seductive Gamzatti. The corps de ballet are eye-catchingly graceful and elegantly precise. ' [The Penguin Guide] Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00, free to members. Friday 25 September: Verdi: Aïda Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.15 p.m. Verdi's famous opera will be shown in a sumptuous production from the Met with hundreds of extras (and several horses!) but, most important, wonderful singing. The cast includes Aprile Millo, Dolora Zajick (thrilling as Amneris!), Placido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes and the opera is conducted by James Levine. Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00, free to members. In association with the Alliance Fran aise de Bulawayo Tuesday 29 September. French Cello/Accordion Duo Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Fran ois SALQUE (violoncello) and Vincent PEIRANI (accordion) present a programme including The Song of the Birds (traditional Catalan melody); David Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody; Jocelyn Mienniel: Baikal; Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen; Samuel Strouk: Yiddish; Vincent Peirani: Suite; St phane Grappelli: Medley Booking at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music from Monday 14 September. Tickets: US$5.00/R40.00, free to members. Friday 9 October. Gilbert & Sullivan: Patience Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Patience is perhaps one of the less well-known G&S operas but the satire on Oscar Wilde is just as amusing today as it was more than a century ago. The aesthetic poet Bunthone loves Patience, the milkmaid, who rejects him but meanwhile he has captured the hearts of every other maiden in the village. When amorous army officers arrive to be spurned by these love-sick maidens and the idyllic poet Grosvenor proposes to Patience, all manner of Gilbertian complications ensue. This Australian Opera production is traditional in style and features the late Heather Begg as the cello-playing Lady Jane amongst "a cast that simply could not be bettered." Sydney Morning Herald] Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00, free to members. Tuesday 13 October. E-mail ikorro@vodamail.co.za FRIENDS OF HWANGE TRUST Saving Zimbabwe's largest National Park In partnership with Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe and The National Parks & Wildlife Management Authority Newsletter July 2009 To all those interested in Hwange National Park, alias Friends of Hwange As we near the end of July, we are well and truly into the dry season in Hwange National Park. Although we had a good rainy season, surface water in the South of the park dried up quickly, and the big game returned to the North of the park early this year. As a result there has been heavy demand on waterholes and pans in the Park since April, necessitating pumping of water from then. For those who have never visited Hwange in the dry season, or have not witnessed the desperation of animals during a drought, let me try to describe the scene at a waterhole that contains inadequate water. Highest up in the chain of animals are the elephants (of which Hwange has an estimated 20 thousand) which due to their size are able to dominate all available water at a pan and prevent any other animals from drinking. Elephants will stay around a pan that has water until their thirst is assuaged. If the pan has been totally depleted, and all that is available is the water coming out of the pipe supplying the pan, an elephant will stand with the end of his trunk over the pipe, and suck up every drop that comes out of the ground. As one animal takes his trunk away from the pipe to pour what he has collected down his throat, another will immediately take his place and there are all the while multiple trunks searching and feeling for each drop that might escape. Since a big bull elephant requires about 200 litres of water a day, the chaos reigning when multiple herds come in to a pan to drink is hard to describe, the scene is hugely upsetting to witness. It is bad enough to watch animals pushing and shoving, trampling on and screaming at one another around the water pipe, but worse still is when there is no water at all, when the drone of the Lister engine fades away, and hundreds of animals of all species stand patiently waiting for the engine to start up and if it doesn't, simply lie down and die where they stand. It is absolutely tragic to witness a large herd of buffalo walk in from many miles away to an empty pan. Desperately thirsty, their only option is to rest for a while, then unrewarded, trudge on to the next pan, a long distance away, in the faint hope of finding water. One of the most heart rending sights during the drought in 2005 was to watch the scene when an engine that had been silent for a time was re-supplied with fuel and was started up. Animals of all sizes and species started pouring out of the surrounding bush knowing that the key to their survival lay in the noise of that engine. At times when there is enough water available in the pans, there are none of these problems. Thus we, the trustees of FOH are determined that no matter what the odds, we cannot let these animals down. We will do whatever we can to keep them going until the onset of the rains in November. Due to the world recession, and the inability of our major donors from previous years being able to support us, we have had difficulty finding the necessary resources to keep pumping water to the pans. We have found ourselves appealing to anyone and everyone to support our cause by donating whatever they feel they can. However, if we are to avert a major disaster this year, and avoid the deaths of thousands of animals, there is still great need for adequate funds to see us through the next four months. Our major requirement is for diesel to run the Lister engines which are responsible for driving the mono pumps that supply water to the pans. Each engine uses about 500 litres of diesel a month, and one litre of diesel costs about USD 1. We try to supply water to 10 pans spread through the Northern section of Hwange, this gives an idea of our requirements. USD 20 will keep one pump running for 24 hours. Our five windmills do a wonderful job, and we are exploring ways to go more "green" and install more eco friendly systems, but at present these simply cannot keep up with the demand for water during the height of the dry season, and we are forced to use Lister engines. To this end, we are appealing for any donations at all to help us. Dave Dell has put together a photographic CD of Zimbabwe, photos of wildlife, birds and scenic Zim which he is selling for USD 20. Proceeds from the sale of the CD will go towards funds for FOH. The feedback we have had from people who have bought the CD so far has been tremendously positive and uplifting. Contact him on the above email address for details if you would like a CD. Since the withdrawal of the Zimbabwean local currency, and it's subsequent replacement with South African Rand and US dollars, problems associated with receiving monies into Zim have disappeared. We have thus set up a local bank account and are now able to accept donations directly into Zim. The Reconnection takes place in two sessions, each session lasting about 45 minutes. Sessions optimally take place on consecutive day. The Reconnection is a touch-free procedure. Clients lie on a massage table, fully clothed. Cost for the two-session Reconnection is R1800. Reconnective Healing allows for healings that are not just physical, mental or emotional but which go beyond that to bring you healing that includes the evolution of your very being and essence. A Reconnective Healing session usually lasts 30-45 minutes. Clients lie on a massage table, fully clothed. Reconnective Healing is a touch-free procedure. It is recommended that you experience a series of three sessions to adjust to the new healing frequencies. Cost for a Reconnective Healing session is $450. Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help. If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help. Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. --Martin Luther King, Jr "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931
