1) Editorial A VERY SPECIAL BOOK ! On a visit to Knysna last week, I came across a copy of Alan Hardy's book "A History of Theatre, Ballet and Orchestra in Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe 1890 -1980" It was a gift to his ex Zimbabwean friend Eric Fryett. What a joy it was to read, with a foreword by none other than Mr. Theatre Geoffrey Atkins himself. Strangely enough the very first theatrical performance in Rhodesia was presented in 1869 by Thomas Baines - the amazing artist who depicted so beautifully some of the very first paintings of the Victoria Falls. A Mr. Susman brought the first piano into the country in 1892 and the following year The Salisbury Musical and Dramatic Society was formed. Alan Hardy's book encapsulates a magnificent ninety years of drama, music and dance and even lists the first theatrical performances many of which were undertaken at the Empire Theatre in Bulawayo and the Market Hall in Salisbury. There are many delightful photographs of old places and old performers, some of whom were household names to all of us Oldies!! Names came flooding back to me as I read on - Mary Morgan Davies, Allan Brittain, Bob Nixon, Marion Port. Some of these fine entertainers have since died but many still live on, and some even still in Zimbabwe! I saw Pat Schmullian at the airport the other day; she was an amazingly talented actress and was as bright and as sprightly as ever ! There are excellent photographs of Frank Allanthwaite, Barbara Sher, Sonia Hattin, Terry Buchan, John Bardo and Norman Mactaggert and on the dancing side Alan has included some great pics of Val Lonstein and his own wife Judy hardy. Stuart Goakes and Brian Meikle are there too as well as Barbara Illingworth and Tony Bulling, Maureen Dyer, Peter Corbishly, There is also a complete list of productions of the Bulawayo Theatre Club dating back to 1937 including "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" which was produced by my very own dad - Reginald Hardy! This excellent little book features the names of many of the talented players and producers with names like Joan and John Hopcroft, Diana Isaacs, Peter Lewis, Ray Knibbs, and Andy Turnbull. Of course I have left out loads of important names of exceptionally talented people and for this I apologise. Of course I have totally omitted the Salisbury Repertory Players, the Courtald Theatre and the Gatooma and Gwelo Theatres, the Fort Victoria Theatre and the ZICSO Theatre but I am open to invitations to do an article about those amazing people and places too if required!! As for Ballet and The Philharmonic Orchestras? Well that's for another day..... Thank you for this extraordinary book Alan Hardy now in Australia with his exquisite wife and ballerina - Judy Hardy. 2) Notices CRICKET COACHING CLINIC Matthew Townshend and Heath Streak will be holding a pre-season cricket clinic with 3 current National players for ages 7-14 years. 3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES There are still some wonderfully kind people in this world, especially so in Zimbabwe. A few weeks ago, I went shopping at the Hillside Shopping Centre. When I went to pay for my purchases, I felt for my wallet in my back pocket and it was missing. It seems it had been stolen out of the pocket as I walked around the corner. There was nothing to be done - it was gone! More than two weeks later I received a message that my wallet had been found, quite a long way away, near Moray School. Mrs. Siwela of Safeguard Security, who works for Haggi Rand had, that morning, stepped on this black wallet while walking to work. Fearing a booby trap, she dealt with it very carefully, and soon found that there were only cards inside identifying it as mine. She phoned my home address and was told by my housekeeper where I was working, and she contacted me. Within half an hour I had recovered my wallet with driving licence, ID, and numerous cards all intact. Only cash was missing - what a surprise! That lady, Mrs. Siwela, and other people at Haggi Rand had taken great trouble to find me and ensure that my wallet was returned to me. Thank you all very much indeed. A bouquet indeed for people who showed kindness, consideration and honesty. Peter Rollason
4) CONGRATULATIONS GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY SUDDENS---KLUCKOW Barry Suddens and Cherith Kluckow were married in Livingstone on 15 August 1959 at the Presbyterian Church and then lived in Bulawayo from 1966 until moving to Australia a few years ago. Blessed with two children Michael and Lindsay. Michael and his wife Emma live in Harare with their children Amy,Peter, James and Rebekah. Lindsay and her husband Wayne Smith now live in Australia with their children Kirsty (married to Bradley Hannah),Kevin,Michael,Steven and Daniel. Please forgive our late notice and if you have already heard our terrible news, we hope you will understand our shock and grief at her sudden death. Although we were so very proud of her phenomenal fight against lymphoma cancer, on Wednesday she woke up in terrible pain. She was taken to her doctor where she was admitted and it was discovered the cancer was back. Mum was "comfortable" on Friday but confused and drowsy and she slipped away peacefully. Father John saw Mum on Thursday night and gave her last rites. We have planned a full requiem mass for her here in Bloemfontein on Thursday 20 August at 2pm. She was the most remarkable woman, mother, wife and friend who touched so many lives and left an indelible imprint which will stay with us all forever. We know how special all of you were to Sheena and how much your friendship and prayers meant to her. It is the month of August, on the shores of the Black Sea . It is raining, and the little town looks totally deserted. It is tough times, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. Suddenly, a rich tourist comes to town. He enters the only hotel, lays a 100 Euro note on the reception counter, and goes to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one. The hotel proprietor takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to the butcher. The Butcher takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the supplier of his feed and fuel. The supplier of feed and fuel takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to the town's prostitute that in these hard times, gave her "services" on credit. The hooker runs to the hotel, and pays off her debt with the 100 Euro note to the hotel proprietor to pay for the rooms that she rented when she brought her clients there. The hotel proprietor then lays the 100 Euro note back on the counter so that the rich tourist will not suspect anything. At that moment, the rich tourist comes down after inspecting the rooms, and takes his 100 Euro note, after saying that he did not like any of the rooms, and leaves town. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now without debt, and looks to the future with a lot of optimism. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly how the World is doing business and barely surviving today.
