THROWING A BIT OF LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT
I know the folk over in Hillside and Burnside are going to hate me for this but I just wanted to let them know just how delightful it has been to have POWER for the last eleven days in a row !!
Yes, power, twenty four seven, day and night, all day, every day !! YEEEHAAAA !!
For the last week at least..... Prior to that we were the worst affected I am sure, being the oldest most established suburb, we were the easiest to switch off, and so we received the brunt of the power cuts, but then one of our residents, who shall remain nameless, got his molars into ZESA, and hey presto !!
Eureka !!!! Eureka !! Eureka !!
It has been all the more amazing because HeeHoo went off to watch the rugby over the weekend and I was sure, positive, convinced, that we would have our normal power cuts, and that without him, in the dark for hours and hours, I would be a bag of nerves, a quivering mass of pulsating jelly !!
It's not that I am nervous (well maybe just a bit) but I really do not like the dark. I like the quiet, I enjoy being on my own, but I do not like the dark and being on my own in the dark, is not very zesty!!
HeeHoo has made sure that we are self sufficient without power from ZESA, we have generators, inverters, more re-chargeable "maglites" than the White House possibly, but its a purely state of mind.
But in fact the description of "nervous" could be boiled down to "sheer unmitigated terror".
I also manifests in my pooches, surely a Great Dane, a Pointer and a Jack Russell collectively, should garner that "pack" instinct and look after Mum, but no, its the "tail between the legs, hang dog special" every single time !!
Eventually the only sane solution is to put them to bed, and face the problem, which usually does not last too long unless there is a real breakdown,thank goodness. Well, "not too long" is known to be anything from five hours to nine hours ....
But we do feel for those folks on the other side of the Matsheumhlope, I can assure you. In fact we feel so bad ever time we turn on a light switch, or use the hair dryer, or boil the kettle, that we are contemplating going on a solidarity "Power Strike".... You know similar to a hunger strike ? A sympathy strike in keeping with our new found Unity approach !!
Yes siree, I have broached it with several of my Suburban fellow tea drinkers and they all told me to get lost !!
But thank you ZESA, for a week of glorious First World Life !!

We recently went to a party and met up with a few ex Zimbos your readers may remember, including our daughters Wendy and Sally with husbands Mike and Henry, Ross Craig, Lara Tredgold, Karen and Mike Wilson, Fred and Jen Shiels, Sarah and Jono Armstrong were also there. They are working very hard running a Post Office cum store, starting work at 4.30am with the arrival of the newspapers and closing at 6pm, seven days a week! Jono's Mum Eileen is also living near them at Bexhill-on-Sea.

Wagner: Siegfried Acts II and III
Friday 17 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a

Siegfried has many of the elements of legendary tales throughout the ages,
tasks, riddles and supernatural messages. The guileless hero who has never
known fear, having re-forged Notung, slays Fafner as he guards the horde of
gold, takes the Ring and Tarnhelm, encounters Wotan and shatters his spear
before he finally passes through the magic fire to awaken Brünnhilde from
her enchanted sleep. All this is thrillingly depicted in the Met's
production and is fully matched by the glorious singing of Hildegard Behrens
as Brünnhilde, James Morris as Wotan and Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegfried
himself.

The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra
Monday 27 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra is one of the most remarkable stories in
recent music, a youth orchestra of international standard made up largely of
street children. Sir Simon Rattle has called the system that produced it
"the most important thing happening in classical music anywhere in the word"
, and this DVD of a Salzburg Festival concert features Beethoven's Triple
Concerto and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition when the orchestra is
expanded to monster proportions with 14 double-basses and the rest to match!
In the Triple Concerto, Martha Argerich, no less, is the pianist with the
Capu on bothers, Renaud and Gautier, the violinist and cellist. The concert
is preceded by a documentary, School of Listening, which features the
orchestra in a rehearsal of Mahler's First Symphony.
Elizabeth French (piano)
Tuesday 28 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Elizabeth is currently spending a month teaching and assisting at the
Academy. She completed an M.Mus. at the Royal Academy of Music, having
earlier received a first class honours degree in music from Durham
University. She was awarded the Frederic Jackson Memorial Prize on entry to
the Academy and became the Meaker Fellow for the year 2005/6. Other awards
include the title "Montreal International Music Camp Young Artist of the
Year" in 2001. She has performed widely as both soloist and accompanist and
has also recorded for the Channel 4 series Arrows of Desire. We're very
privileged to have her at the Academy and I should add that she travelled
to Zimbabwe at her own expense for which we are enormously grateful. Her
recital will be a highlight of the week and the very generous programme is
as follows: William Matthias: Toccata alla Danza (1961); Haydn: Sonata in A
flat major, Hob.XVI/46; Leonard Bernstein: Touches (1981/83); Mendelssohn:
Rondo Capriccioso, Op.14; Chopin: Berceuse; Prokofiev: Sonata No.3 in A
minor, Op.28; Beethoven: 32 Variations in C minor, WoO80; York Bowen:
Sonatina in C major, Op.144

The Peggy Morris Choral Competition
Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 9.00 a.m.
Peggy Morris was very involved in choral music in schools and elsewhere for
many years in Zambia and thereafter for a shorter time in Harare. Her
daughter now lives in Bulawayo and she and her family have funded this
competition, which will be an annual event at the Academy, in Peggy's
memory. This year 15 schools have entered. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Student Concert & Whitestone School
Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
A short concert by a range of Academy students will be followed by extracts
from the recent Whitestone production of "The Phantom Express" with Andrew
Lloyd Webber's music. Bring your supper and enjoy it before.

Just thought that you would like to know....
A huge raspberry to the ZRP Traffic Section who constantly harass any
member of the driving public who does not have red reflectors, white
reflectors etc. on their crs. Well members of the driving public take note
of this....
On the morning of Wednesday 8th July 2009 I noted a ZRP car (No. ZRP 4120)
driving into the Traffic section grounds at the Drill Hall with all of the
following defects :- No red reflectors, No white reflectors, No brake
lights, No working tail lights, they were non existent and broken, and to
top it all off all the Members of the ZRP in the car had no seat belts on.
WOW......and they have the cheek to stop us and extort money out of the
public for no rhyme or reason. ZRP get your own cars in order before
pouncing on the members of the public.

The City of Bulawayo must have the most valuable real estate in the world, in their wisdom they have valued my business property in the CBD area at US$1 500 000.00 (the value for insurance purposes is $200 000.00) and based on these charges they expect rates in the sum of US$500.43 a road levy of US$299.72 and various other charges amounting to just over $1 100.00 per month.
We pay vehicle license fees, why should we pay a road levy, no road works have been done in our area for at least 4 years, the bins are not emptied and we take our rubbish to the City dump and pay Council fees for the privilege of doing so.
Z.E.S.A. was forced by the Minister to reduce their charges and the Council should be forced to reduce their charges.
We the business community should boycott all Council charges until a reasonable tariff is agreed with us.

POLICE yesterday announced new deposits for fines for those wishing to plead
guilty to minor offences and wishing to avoid a court appearance.
The new deposit fines are with immediate effect. Chief police spokesperson
Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena, warned that for some
offences repeat offenders would have to appear in court, and could not
simply pay a deposit fine at a police station. First offenders for the
listed offences have the option of appearing in court, if they wish to plead
not guilty or if they wish to bring forward mitigating evidence for a lower
fine. Before the release of this schedule, some police officers were
applying the US$20 fine indiscriminately.

Sadly our AGM, although widely publicised and canvassed, did not atract even one member of the public. If a question was asked "What do you think would be the most challenging but rewarding task to undertake in beleaguered Zimbabwe"? The answer would undoubtedly be "running a Frail Care Geriatric Home".
There must be hundreds of Bulawayo citizens who have elderly parents who will one day need a peaceful, caring home in which to pass their final years of their lives. And yet no one will come forward.
The present Trustees have served the Home for so many years now that they are in fact ready for a suite at the Edith Duly Nursing Home themselves. !!
So come on all caring concerned citizens of Bulawayo ... WE NEED YOUR HELP... we just cannot do it alone.
Come and make a difference to society. Don't just sit at home and complain about the lack of facilities in the city. Come and help rebuild them, if you are going to stay here, come and make a difference.

On behalf of thousands of Rhodesians/Zimbabweans, I thank you for your writings and your efforts, which give hope and inspiration and humour (often wry and often at your own expense) to so many of us.
In this week's edition, 7/07/09, you brought back many memories of some of our favourite TV personalities, as well as describe the joy of English - Language and Literature - which Paddy Vickery stirred up in you.
I relate that to one of my own English teachers at School in Salisbury (yes, I'm also from 'Bambazonke'), Mrs. Pauline Skyrme-Jones, who I'm sure some of your readers will have known.

What a joy going down memory lane with you this week. I remember all the announcers you mentioned. Remember Ken jackson's 'Armchair Safari' and also his April Fool joke with the Ming Vase? James Thrush was always so very English and correct and Peter Rollason so believable. Like you I just loved Alport - didn't he speak beautifully (?) and the choirs he introduced were magical. Ah the good old bad old days! Bliss!

passed away peacefully in Marondera on the 13th July after a short
illness.
We should be grateful if you would let folk know that our dear sister Vivienne Bancroft passed away at the Edith Duly Nursing Home on Tuesday evening (14th July). She will be sadly missed by Tish and Clive, Tony and Joan, Mike and Jill, Margaret and Derek and the whole family. A memorial service will be held for her at the Riverside Anglican Church on Tuesday 21st July at 3.30 p.m.

David and Jenny Coltart and family are mourning the loss of David's dear mother who died this morning after a brave fight against cancer. She was a truly remarkable woman.

Inge Normann, a long time resident of Garden Park, passed away peacefully in her sleep on 10/07/09 aged 97. Inge will be sadly missed by all her friends. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
Thanks for all the communication,but is it possible that you pass our sincere Condolences to Rev. Jabulani Mudenda who lost his dear Mother, Maina Mudenda, on Wednesday at around 1125hrs in Binga Hospital. The old lady was laid to rest on Saturday morning. We pray that the children be comforted by God and may gogo Mudenda's soul rest in internal peace.
