1) Editorial

SPELLING !!

I think I am a pretty hot speller, although my Sister In Law in Oz would not agree I am sure.

Suz would go through the Mirror with a fine tooth comb and sends me the list of spelling mistakes, except that now she is the mother of three and certainly does not have time!! But just look at her pedigree, she used to play scrabble with Zimbabwe's finest !!

My WORST is going through the Mirror once complied, with my spell check on. For one thing, I can make the fonts as big as I can for the "old eyes" you know, but the spell check refuses to take a bigger font (Must have a word with those Mac Geeks)

It is amazing how many common spelling mistakes we all have, and I am just as guilty as the next person, even in spite of the endeavours of my favourite English teacher Paddy Vickery !!

Now just have a look at this list of the most common spelling errors ? How many do you mess up on ? Come on fess up ? Well I battle with quite a few.

Oh me oh my, it does not matter how many times my spell checker corrects my spelling, I still spell quite a few of the same words incorrectly.

And although I beg and plead with my advertisers "Please run a spell check on your adverts" Some do not do it !!

But I must give credit where credit is due. The one and only person I never ever have to run a spell check on is my dear friend Michael Bullivant.

Chairman of the Academy of Music, Chairman of Performing Arts Bulawayo, Milton Senior master for many years, Michael never ever makes a spelling error. He sends me screeds of stuff for Morning Mirror - wonderful dissertations on his amazing musical concoctions.

We must have, for a tiny city the size of a hairball, the most progressive musical society in the Southern hemisphere.

Now would you even DARE to run a spell check on something like this ???

"Natalya Bessmertnova is a charmingly graceful heroine and she's well partnered by her elegant Knight, Yuri Vasyuchenko, but it is the villainous Sheik, sinisterly portrayed by Gedminas Taranda, who steals the show...Undoubtedly this is the Bolshoi at their peak, and the orchestral playing is first class, as is the recording. Tuesday 16 June : Luis Alberto Llaneza.(baritone), Jeanette Micklem (piano) Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.

Luis Alberto Llaneza is on his first visit to Zimbabwe. "Born in 1964 in Turon, he studied at the University of Oviedo, did repertoire training with Gyuiar Prender in Budapest and attended master classes with Alfredo Kraus and Victoria de los Angeles. The emphasis of his repertoire lies with Spanish music and encompasses classical and chamber music as well an extensive coverage of the Zarzuela genre. His many performances have taken him to all countries in Western as well as Eastern Europe, the United States and South America. The composer Manuel Garcia Morante has written many songs especially for him, celebrating for instance the lyrical work of Fernando Garcia Lorca, with a world premiere in Prague in 1996. Luis lectures on vocal music at various universities, gives master classes at European and American Conservatories and is involved in Musicological Research."

I just scan through the spell checklist, knowing full well that I have never ever managed to catch Michael out !

He is a Thespian after all. He used to write a column in the Chronicle, I think called "Thespian" in the days of yore and HeeHoo and I would read it, not understanding a single word, and gaze in ardent admiration at his command of the English language and also at the words he could find.

Michael can find words that you and I lesser mortals have never ever heard of. It so fascinated HeeHoo that he now gets a daily "Word" from Meriam Webster which he delights in sending me.

The last one he sent was embonpoint \ahng-bohng-PWANG (the "ng" is never pronounced, but the vowels are nasalized)\ noun : plumpness of person : stoutness

Now I took this rather personally and went running for two days and on a diet for three, but the feeling wore off when I got his next word which was obnubilate \ahb-NOO-buh-layt\ verb

There is not much one can do about that sort of word !! I doubt if even Michael or my sister in law would know what obnubilate means for Pete's sake !!

I sometimes think that I have caught Michael out with his spelling but alas no, he has a Stiff Upper Lip British dictionary on his lowly computer while I have a superior Apple with a USA dictionary, so my glee is always short lived.

Just you wait Enry Iggins, I will catch you out one day !!

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
Many thanks to the kind person who arranged for the clearing up of the SILVER QUEEN MEMORIAL. You are a star! I have gathered a number of interesting pictures of the aircraft and its demise. If you are interested please contact me on estate@hillsidedams.com or leave a message at the Hillside Dams office or at the National Museum.

We are pleased to announce that the entry fees to all MUSEUMS sites has been halved for locals as from 15 June 2009. PLEASE support us and come along. We want to prove to the financial department that their parastatal rates are unsustainable and effectively drive off visitors. It will be for one month only and hopefully if we academics prove our case it will be extended. This entry fee applies to the Natural History Museum, the Khami World Heritage Site and the entry for the combined MUSEUMS sites in the Matobo Hills (not Parks).

We are hoping to revive the HISTORICAL BUILDINGS COMMITTEE for Bulawayo and are looking to bring in people to discuss the many features and associated personalities of our cityscape. It will cover not just the really old buildings nor just the heart of the city. Rather it is important we document every aspect of this great city and all who have lived here and shape this country's destiny. If you are interested in joining us or just have suggestions and material and/or memories of relevance please contact me. Ultimately we want to develop a booklet and urban trail.

Dear Morning Mirror,

We all accept that power cuts are an inevitable part of our lives at the moment. But do they have to be so unevenly and so unfairly distributed? Suburbs is a perfect example: north of Takawira Avenue we get them six days out of seven; cross Takawira and no power cuts for weeks at a time. Similarly whilst enduring cuts of up to eight hours at home because, we're told, power is critically short, at my place of work on the Hillside Road there have been no power cuts for two weeks and very few indeed in two months. Why? And, for that matter, why should the centre of town be completely exempt except when there are faults? It's reasonable not to impose daytime cuts on shops and businesses but why can that area not take its share of the evening cuts?

Can the Mirror perhaps get an explanation from ZESA? We reluctantly accept the necessity of what is euphemistically known as load-shedding cuts but they should be evenly distributed across the whole city. The way the cuts are currently being implemented brings to mind the words of the maltreated schoolboy down the ages, "it's not fair!".

Just to let you know, I took your advice and loaded my 3-ton truck with garden and household refuse and went to Khami Road to off-load, only to be told that I could not off-load there. I had to go to the municipal dump in Richmond. I was advised by the person on duty at that time there would be no charge. After traveling some 20 km to the Richmond City Dump (and 20km back), I was rudely "greeted" by a dump official, telling me to "go and pay first". After me explaining to him that I was instructed to come and dump here, free of charge, I got no joy out of him! I then went up to their so-called office and saw the so-called supervisor, who also refused first of all to take garden refuse (telling me it was a sanitary dump), but if I paid him US $9 I could dump!! After explaining the situation to him and I had no US $ on me, I asked them if I should go and dump it in the bush?! His reply was - "ahh, it is all up to you!!" So, needless to say....!!

Paula Dakin, one of our up & coming riders, has been invited to compete in the FEI (Equestrian) World Challenge to be held later in the year in Santiago, Chile. Paula's invitation comes on the strength of her winning the Zimbabwe competition & coming 3rd in the zonal competition. She competed against riders from the Southern African region; some 60 odd competitors.Paula will compete on borrowed horses, as will all the finalists. Paula has been a stalwart of the local branch of the Horse Society & competes on a regular basis all round the country, & in South Africa. Paula is the first Bulawayan to have achieved this honour!

"Please could someone from the motor racing club let us know what is happening with the race track. I see that part of it has been ripped up for repairs, but it has been standing like that for over a year now. What is going on??? We haven't had any form of racing or drags for a long time and everyone is missing it!!! I understand that a Mr Craig Goby was doing the repairs initially, is he is still doing it?? Is he going to finish it??? What is happening??? Is there going to be a 3 Hour Endurance race this year, as last year it was not held, very disappointing!!! So please guys, get the track going again, can't wait any longer.

Daphne Elizabeth Feldman (nee Fredman)
On the 11 June 1960, Daphne joined Abraham Feldman (Sonny) in marriage. On 11 June 2008, their wedding anniversary, Daphne again joined her late husband Sonny, this time in spirit - "No greater Love!". Daphne was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. For all those who knew her and loved her, light a candle this Thursday 11 June in honour of her memory.

Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewellry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way. Tel 69814, shop hours 9am -12pm and 2pm - 4pm except Monday mornings, and last Saturday of the month 9am - 10.45am
Thank you for keeping our shop going. Why not pop in and browse. We have brand new ballet and tap shoes size 7 and bottles of coloured bath salts and bath salts and soap in packs . We have an urgent appeal from our kennels for old newspapers.

Caesar has filled our home with joy and delight for the past nine years that he has been with us. He has sparkling eyes and a wonderful spirit, he is immediately loved by all who meet him. As we are leaving for an extended period we need to find him a new loving home.

Two Special Requests for St Francis

There is a child at St Francis who needed a computer to help with school work (he has used one before) - & someone has VERY kindly donated one for him. But now he needs a printer, preferably one that does not use very expensive ink cartridges. He can then print out his school work, and write letters to all the people who have donated books, jigsaw puzzles, paints etc to him.
Secondly, the Home needs a colour TV. The 3 rooms where the children spend time during the day each have a colour TV, which gives them sound & colour even if they do not understand what they are seeing. But the TV in the day room of the younger children is black & white. They can only get ZTV but if it is in colour that is a great help. Very many thanks for all the interest shown in St Francis.

Do you think you could help these people that lost everything through a Zesa fault at one of the poles next to their houses. On the Net or the Morning Mirror?
Both families need food, clothes and footwear. I thought if a company or whoever could supply 2 large strong tents and maybe 2 smaller ones for them to stay in. And also for help to try and rebuild their homes. All that is left is walls, I don't know how bad they are. They will need food for a while I think. There must be some way we can help them. We will see what we get from the church on Sunday, and maybe some food. Martha please put this on the morning mirror!!
