REMEMBER YOUR CHILDHOOD ?

Let's reminisce my friends.

I thank God that I had such a wonderful childhood in such a beautiful country.. Close your eyes... and go back in time...............

When milk and newspaper were delivered to your back door. Doctors would be too happy to visit you at home at 2 am, not only that they became personal friends. Petrol cost 4/3d a gallon. The "hot dog stall" near Bogies clock in Gwelo served the best burgers in town.

I'm talking about the time of Drive In cinema's, Hide and Seek in the park or the dark. The garage down the road, the Gremlin, Palace Cinema. Mom dropped you for morning matinee for 1/3d of Tarzan, Batman and Robin and swapping comics too. And Nicks Café, Mermaids Pool, Dandy & Beano annuals, French skipping, swimming till your feet went wrinkly, Jumping the river, building a swing from a piece of rope tied to a tree, tennis on the street or picnics in the backyard when Guy Fawks was cool. The smell of suntan lotion, hot tar and Mazoe Orange Juice. Dandy bubble gum for a cent, an ice cream from the Dairy Den on the corner. How about CARLO and Stingers, open gates and snakey snakey with an old tyre tube and a piece of string. or stingers and catties. WOW

Wait, can you still remember........... When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere, and your mother made you "dress up" for the trip. A million mozzie bites and peeling skin in Summer, Sticky fingers and sand in and on everything. Wag 'n bikkies, Hitting the Bezant tin & climbing trees. Walking or riding your bike to school & friend's houses - no matter what the weather and playing in puddles Playing in the Makabuzi was such fun, but the 21 Bilharzia injections which followed were no joke. Running till you were out of breath laughing so hard that your stomach hurt. Jumping on the bed..... pillow fights, spinning around, getting dizzy.. falling down. Huga bugs and Hoola hoops. Being tired from playing marbs and french cricket.....

Remember that? A piece of card in the spokes held by a clothes peg transformed any bike into a motorcycle.Three speeds and dynamos just to have lights.

Man o' man what a life

I'm not finished just yet..............

Can you still taste and smell........ Eating raw jelly or Tree-Top from the packet, Ice lollies and banana splits, Eating Willard's Peanut Butter on the fattest slice of fresh Lobel's bread? Fresh cream Doughnuts from Bake 'n Take after church on a Sunday. Boiling tins of Condensed milk to make caramel and coconut ice- took hours! Roast Beef on Sundays and Ox Tail too.

Remember when...............

There were two types of takkies - Tommies and North Stars, and the only time you wore them at school, was for "PT". Wearing shoes with the toe caps cut off was accepted by all. Slip slops to wear were just a ball and veld skoens for your best dress How hard you tried to swop your hostel sandwich for a day Skie's (day scholars) lunch...no luck The skin on the boiled milk at the hostel?

It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends; Nobody owned a pedigree dog. 25 pence was decent pocket money and Sixpence, would fetch you from school on his bike and you would ride the bar or the carrier, and hang on for dear life through the bush paths home. When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for 5 cents and feel lucky. When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there.

Remember when............. It was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb or make 10 cents appear from behind your ear? When it was considered a great privilege and very unusual to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant or in a proper hotel or even better, Haddon & Sly, or - Meikles.

Remember when............ Any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or get him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. When being sent to the head mistress's or masters office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of muggings, drugs, gangs, aids etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat... and some of us are still afraid of them!!!

Didn't that feel good just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that?!!!!

Remember when................ Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo." Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Ninger!" Or revulsion was just 'Siss Man'! or ompie pompie lekker stompie "A race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money was handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly", The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a 'BIC' pen / paw paw branch pea shooter or an eraser catapulted by a 30cm ruler, or the catapult made from golf ball elastic twisted on your leg to shoot bits of orange peels. Taking drugs meant chewing on 'Cafenol' chewable vitamins or Cod Liver Oil...(yuk).

Colcom Ham, Flings, Corn Curls, Chicken Flings, Willard's Chips, rock-hard marshmallow Easter eggs and best of all .....kudu biltong from Uncle Scotty's farm Coke were considered basic nutritional requirements (and don't forget Tomango Tomato Sauce) and Hubbly Bubbly. Coke top collections got you plastic animals Elephants and sable, baboons and hyenas.

Good times were always had at the following places - any evening of the week... The Blue Gardenia / The Gremlin / The Yellow Orchid / Fritz in Byo / across the Border at Maria's, or Merna Brown's place, or Machipanda, and don't forget the Little Swallow. Hiking in the Chimanimani's the Vumba and Troutbek or trips to Kariba, Wankie, Lake Kyle or Vic falls, strip roads to Zimbabwe ruins. Game parks were the best Wankie, Chirundu, Gona Re zhou,.Matopos,Bumi and all.

And what about an afternoon at the following places... Matopos Hotel /Rhodes grave/ Mazoe Hotel / Mermaids Pool / Aloe Park / Hot Springs / Lake Mac/ Rusape Dam, Pie and Gravy in Meikles Umtali on a Sat morning with the mates. Mixed grill at Helen's Umtali for 7/6d.

Window shopping at night without fear of being harmed; Skills and courage were discovered because of a "truth or dare" Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

Remember when................ Jacaranda's, Flame Lilies, Kaffir booms and Msasas's bloomed Afternoon tropical Thunder storms rained cat and dogs, The smell of first rains and the Flying ants that followed by the zillion.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!!!!

There have been enquiries from people in Zimbabwe about the healing techniques of Journeywork and about holding workshops on this subject here. The Journey South Africa team is keen to bring this work to Zimbabwe and are offering workshops (detailed below) in June.

For those of you who have not read the book The Journey by Brandon Bays, this work is about healing at a cellular level. Brandon cured herself of cancer in this way and has taken the work global. You can read up on this amazing work on the website www.thejourney.com. It's a series of guided visualizations that promote the release of peptides that have been stored in the cell memories in the body which predispose us to disease and illness.

The workshops will run as follows :-

The Journey Intensive 6th and 7th June R1850
Advanced Skills 8th June R1195
(or package deal for both workshops R2795)
Liberating Kids' Shining Potential 9th June R1195

THE SIREN AGAIN

As a child I was reminded every morning, 'that's the Railway Hooter, hurry up you will be late for school"!! My parents were employed at the Railways and unless it has been changed this is a "Steam Hooter" at the Railway Workshops, it is not a siren. The school children who you see these days drifting into school at all times, can now start setting their watches or Cell phones! By the regular hooter, a part of Bulawayo's history. If the wind is strong you may not always hear it go off.

Margaret Davidson

I'm writing to tell you that I have a longer memory than the people who have so far talked about the Bulawayo Siren.

In 1963 I was 4 years old, and we lived in the Suburbs, and every morning Esther used to walk me down to Little Peoples' Nursery School in Heyman Road.

I remember hearing the siren even in those days, and we rose out of bed on the first siren, then we were eating breakfast by the second sound, and by half past seven we were walking down the hill to the school. My mom told me that the Rhodesian Railways siren was a good clock to go by.

Married and living again in the Suburbs until we left, I loved to hear my little-girl days 'clock' telling me what time it was once again, because it guided my husband and I into the day too.
Yet another memory for the books.
Be of good cheer,
Carol MacKenzie.

A few weeks ago I read about you asking people to help with the clean up and Bulawayo and I thought back to our few months in Bulawayo at the end of last year when people were dumping everywhere. I was horrified by the mess on my morning walks.

WELL I have been in India for a month and poverty and squalor is something I had never imagined. It is horrendous. I am sure you can imagine what it is like in a country with billions of people. People, filth and smell everywhere.

So it is brilliant today to read that you had a successful clean up in Bulawayo. And I hope that people continue to keep it clean as I have seen first hand the don't care attitude here.

Thanks for continually keeping us up to date with our home town.

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
Alan and Jill Pugh would like to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks to those extremely kind souls who donated so generously to Alan's recent medical expenses. How blessed we are to live in Bulawayo amongst such kind family, friends - and truly good people like the incredibly generous "old friend at Falcon" who wished to remain anonymous.
And a special word of thanks must go to the big hearted volunteers at Helpline. What great work you do! Alan is now home and in good spirits.
THANK YOU!
With much love from all the Pughs.

Rosemarie's Rescue

A sad little story with a happy ending involving those ubiquitous empty cans that we have come to hate so much.

In the ZITF grounds Rosemarie came across a group of crows hovering over a very tired but still cheeky leguaan with his head neatly caught in a Coca Cola can.

Many people are superstitious and afraid of these amazing mesozoic creatures but Rosemarie approached it slowly and cautiously, watching out for its fearsome tail, and gently took hold of the can.
It slipped off easily, leguaans do not have the necessary forward action with their feet that would have been able to remove the can unaided.
The poor creature had been in this predicament for some time obviously but as soon as he had regained his composure, he scrabbled off with the posse of crows in noisy pursuit.
Hopefully all ended well as Rosemarie went to look for him some hours later and he had gone off to the places where leguaans go, when they do not have ugly cans over their heads.
Thank you to a caring citizen and shame on that person who threw the can on the ground.

Operation of Hope Volunteer, Mari Mora

LAKE FOREST - In less than two weeks Operation of Hope volunteers have fixed the faces of 70 children.

The Lake Forest-based nonprofit - an all-volunteer medical team that donates surgeries to children in developing countries born with facial deformities - is back at work in Zimbabwe.

Since early May the 12-person team - including founder Dr. Joseph Clawson, a retired ear, nose and throat specialist - repaired 36 cleft lips, 33 cleft palates and started reconstructive work on the face of a child blown apart by a landmine. Volunteers come from Orange County, Malibu, Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Texas.
Late last week in Harare, Zimbabwe the group worked on a cleft-lip baby named Apologize. "His mother came to the hospital on a day when it rained so hard that it looked like the rain was sideways," Jennifer Trubenbach wrote in an email from Africa. "She told us these are the tears we have cried to God for the help to our babies. Thank you for God's answer to prayer in coming here to help the people of Zimbabwe.'"

In the last 20 years, Operation of Hope has fixed the facial deformities of nearly 2,000 children worldwide. The nonprofit recently received $50,000 from actor Hugh Jackman following a donation contest he held on his official Twitter profile. The actor became familiar with the nonprofit's work after presenting a People Magazine Heroes Award to Jennifer Trubenbach, the group's executive director.

Trubenbach was selected for the award after she and her family mortgaged their home to help pay surgery for Beloved Jefeti, a Zimbabwean boy who lost half his face after a landmine blew up.
The 18-year-old's surgery is the organization's most recent success story. His facial reconstruction has drawn world-wide attention.
Beloved was 10 and living in rural Zimbabwe when he found a land mine in his grandmother's yard and, thinking it was a transistor radio, he put it in his mouth for better reception. It blew up. Zimbabwean doctors tried to put the lower half of his face back together using a piece of his own stomach tissue. The results were not good.
Then one day in the fall of 2006, Operation of Hope came to his village with promises of medical miracles. Beloved, then 15, asked if they could fix his face. They did.

Blessing, a 17-year-old Zimbabwe boy, had also suffered a similar fate. Operation of Hope's surgery made it possible for him to stop carrying a crusty dust cloth on his chest to wipe drool from his mouth.
When his surgery was over he told Trubenbach that he wanted to be a facial reconstructive surgeon one day.
Operation of Hope gave him a new laptop with educational software.
"He touched it over and over saying, 'What a nice machine, what a nice machine,'" Trubenbach said. "He told us of a story if his dog getting hit by a car and him sewing him up using fishing line. He has charmed the hearts of all of us on the team."

I have AN AMAZING ANIMAL story to tell you and I thought you may want to place it in Morning Mirror. This happened here in Bulawayo on Mother's Day.
I had rescued a puppy one night 6 months ago off the street. She was very thin, covered in ticks and fleas but oh , so friendly.

I informed SPCA ,who suggested I should keep her as they had no parvo to give her and she could become infected in a kennel environment. That same night now, 12am by the time I reached home I bathed, dried, powdered and fed her.She curled up in my arms and went to sleep totally exhausted.

On Monday I took her to see Doc Roberts for a checkup and jabs. Well, no one was quite sure what she was a mixture of as she certainly is not a pretty dog, however, Doc Roberts being the great man he is, gave her some dignity by saying that he thought she had" pointer" in her. Well home I came with my "pointer" and low and behold that evening on going for our pre bedtime walk she "pointed" at a frog. I was delighted.!!!!! On leaving the vet clinic the lady in reception, now knowing about her being rescued, said that Sammy, my"pointers" name, would protect me with her life. I live alone and Sammy together with my 4 other adopted and rescued dogs, all sleep in the house more for their protection from poisoning than for my protection.

Mother's day was looming and I dreaded celebrating without my two sons, however,my very dear friend Nix's daughter Lauren, invited me to be her "mom" for the day so I felt great. Little knowing what a wonderful surprise Sammy was going to present me with on Mother's Day. Mother's Day arrives and I find my entire bed covered in rose petals. Not on the floor or anywhere else in the house. Only on my bed. and a white rose petal sticking out of Sammy's mouth!!!! They were from Sammy. She had gone to the lounge and taken them out of a large bowl I had them floating in and had "brought me a bouquet" for Mother's Day.

She is now quite a big dog, spotted like a "pointer", "pointer" sized, however, her head in nothing like a "pointer"!!! It suffices to say that only a mother could love her and that I do. Daily she brightens up my life with more amazing surprises, sometimes not so nice!!!!And, yes she certainly is very protective .

I want to say to all of you out there in this wonderful country of ours is "please give a little time to appreciate and love our four legged friends " They ask for so little and love so unconditionally..

I just thought i'd share something of regional importance with you and hopefully with your fearless approach to such issues, a change can be made -

I was taking a drive in the High density areas two weeks ago and i saw some workers installing water tanks for the communities on behalf of a Non Governmental Organisation, a very good gesture considering our erratic supplies!

However, when my inquisitive nature took over, i stopped to assess their workmanship and to my utter dismay i found that the tanks are being connected to the mains but before the meter!
My question is this - who pays the bill?
Please can the City fathers look into this issue and respond accordingly.
Kind regards,
June Ashburn (Miss)

RHODESIAN TEA SET
I was wondering if you would be able to assist me with some information? I am in search of a tea service/tea set (3 piece set) ceramic usually in pale blue or green with a metal cover (sort of a tea cosy) every Rhodesian household seemed to have a set. I would be most grateful if you could assist me with a name brand or perhaps where I could obtain a set.

Thank you & have a super day!

Ross G. Cooper releases a unique autobiography, which reveals his perspectives on the poignant issues in the country's transition from a British colony to an independent, one-party state.
This unique autobiography describes the life of a white Zimbabwean growing up in Rhodesia, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and subsequently after the attainment of independence on 18th April 1980, in Zimbabwe, and, thereafter, his move and settling in the UK. It provides a comfortable, quick read and is not meant to be an exhaustive, family, historical or political account. Instead, it was born from a desire to reveal and elucidate the perspectives and truth of poignant issues in the country's transition from a British colony to an independent, one-party state. This book gives an insight into the build up to the political and economic anarchy that has thrown Zimbabwe into a financial abyss and that transformed the bread basket of Africa - a one time flourishing country into a land ravaged by hunger, disease and poverty. Highly Recommended!

HILLSIDE DAMS CONSERVANCY

Dear Friends

It was wonderful to see the large numbers of people who came to the Dams last weekend and public holiday. We are truly encouraged by the continuing great response to the initiative. Nearly 2000 people came over the three days!

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr & Mrs P. Gee and Mr & Mrs M. van Blerk for coming up with several bins for the Conservancy.

Now people will have little excuse for leaving litter scattered around. Thanks also to the Stewart Family for the donation of a childrens' swing. That little play area is very popular with our younger citizens.

Should anyone have any more bins (however battered) please contact me on estate@hillsidedams.com - we can collect.

We want to start work on reviving the old Trim Track. If any one is able to assist with advice on what to include, where and why please let us know. Any memories of the old track would also be helpful so we can start piecing it together.
Best regards
Rob

PROPERTY INVESTMENT IN AUSTRALIA

Craig & Karin Bailey (formerly from Bulawayo), have been involved in property investment in Australia with Brisbane-based company, Wealth Acceleration Group (WAG), since 2002. They found property to be such a great investment vehicle that they recently opened a Toowoomba branch of Wealth Acceleration Group so that they too can offer WAG's hugely successful wealth creation strategies to people locally, throughout Australia, and to investors in southern Africa.

- Did you know that unlike the USA & the UK, Australia currently has a shortage of 200 000 homes? Therefore due to basic economics, there is a huge demand for property in Australia that will continue to push prices up. As a result property experts expect properties to boom in 2010 and 2011.

- Did you know that houses in Australia have doubled in value every 7-10 years for the past 100 years. Through wars, wage concerns, the oil crisis of the 1970s, capital gains tax, high interest rates, low inflation and the introduction of GST - all arguments against properties increasing in value over the past 5 decades - properties doubled in value every 10 years.
- Above that, real data figures from 1978 in Brisbane show an average annual growth rate of 10%. And this growth compounds each year.
We work on the basis of LEVERAGE - holding as much appreciating asset with as little money as possible -, COMPOUND and TIME. We also manage your cash flow to ensure that you have the money needed to pay your bills on your property. And we give investors advice and back up service.
If you are interested in investing in property in Australia, whether you're in Australia or in southern Africa, contact us and we'll give you the information that you need to start investing. Our website is also filled with excellent information.

Investors outside Australia:
- Did you know that property investment helps toward your immigration requirements for Australia?
- We can get you a 70% loan with Australian banks.
- We have a way to structure 2 properties for you in such a way that they cost you nothing! Too good to be true? Contact me and I'll tell you how.
- If you don't have a lot of capital, you can do a joint venture with 12% returns.

15) SITUATIONS VACANT/ WANTED

I am a 40 year old lady who is seeking rewarding MORNINGS ONLY employment. I have an Executive Secretarial Diploma from Speciss College (1986). Certificates, references and C.V. are available to view. My employment history involves many years experience as a top flight legal secretary. The nature of this work is such that a high degree of competency, accuracy and intelligence is required. I am able to work with little or no supervision and am well presented. I have experience in Word Perfect (and the like), Excel, Internet and Email and am able to assimilate new programmes easily. I would be interested in P.A. work or helping to run a small business concern or department within a larger Company. Although I have no training or experience per se in a managerial capacity, I have developed skills that would be useful in that area and feel I have leadership potential. I also have approximately 5 years experience in Sales and Marketing but would wish to apply that knowledge in a non-selling capacity such as training, product promotion etc, as opposed to being out in the field. My strengths involve dealing with people from all walks of life. I commit happily and I believe in compassion, integrity and ethics.

I feel I am a team player and always try to maintain a balanced approach to life together with a sense of humour! I am a philosopher at heart and enjoy working with and helping people. I thrive in a busy office environment and work efficiently under reasonable pressure.

I look forward to hearing from interested prospective employers.
Please contact Mrs Caroline Turnbull on 244587 or 091 2 747 291.

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.
What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and then, the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931 - 2005
