For millions of us wherever we are in the world, she is and always will be the "mother who gave birth to not only six children but also to a new Zimbabwe". She stood by her man and her family through what we can only imagine as terrifying, treacherous, dangerous and life-threatening years, committed in mind, body and spirit to the cause; namely getting out there and doing whatever it took to fight the good fight to bring hope, love, guidance and leadership to her countrymen and women. Saturday morning in Zimbabwe was somber. An underlying feeling of sadness mixed with anger at the injustice of it all. I spoke to some of you who were deeply upset and clearly the impact of this tragedy will be felt far and wide for a long, long time. As we go about our days I'm certain that the Tsvangirai family will be in our thoughts, and as such, we would do well to honor Susan's sacrifice by remembering that she dies a true heroine of Henry Olonga's "Our Zimbabwe", of our hearts and souls. She joins the sacrosanct list of those who will never be forgotten in the struggle for the promised land. With her legacy behind us, embedded within her birthright her qualities of love, patriotism, courage, humility and grace shall surely shore up our own strength and commitment to continue this long walk to freedom. Let her ultimate sacrifice remind us to look deeply and honestly into our own souls to ask the same question Susan's life answered with a resounding "Yes"; "In the evening of my life, I will look to the sunset. And the question I will ask, only God can answer; Was I brave and strong and true? Did I fill the world with love my whole life through?" We will not forget. We will not falter when called to make the sacrifices needed to make the difference so that at the end of our own lives we may look back and know that we did all we could, gave all we could and ultimately helped to spread the light which enveloped the darkness hanging over our beloved land. God Bless you, our Prime Minister, and the Tsvangirai children. Your loss is our loss. Your pain is felt throughout the world. You are not alone. You have never and will never walk alone. We pay tribute to a great lady, in our prayers, thoughts, and actions. We are so, so sorry. "The healing of evil can be accomplished only by the love of individuals. A willing sacrifice is required. I do not know how this occurs but I know that it does. I know that good people can deliberately allow themselves to be pierced by the evil of others - to be broken thereby yet somehow not broken - to even be killed in some sense and yet still survive and not succumb. Whenever this happens there is a slight shift in the balance of power in the world." - Dr. Scott Peck - Debbie J. ++++++ Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) Statement on International Women's Day, 8th March 2009 As the world, including Zimbabwe, commemorates International Women's Day, members of WOZA find little to celebrate. As organisations, both local and international, take the opportunity afforded by International Women's Day to speak out about the need for gender equality, respect for women's right and an end to violence, WOZA joins the chorus. Yet we understand that women in Zimbabwe, and Africa as a whole, need much more than rhetoric - they need action. And actions speak louder than words. The current situation of the ordinary woman in Zimbabwe is heartbreaking. She only lives until the age of 34 because the Mugabe regime killed a perfectly good health system. She can hardly access antiretroviral treatment and even if she does, the three meals a day she needs to take them with is impossible. She cannot put a full nutritious meal on the table for her family because Zimbabwe is no longer the breadbasket of Africa but its basket case. A mother is always preoccupied with a better future for her children so that she can dream about sitting in the shade and being looked after for a change. But the prospects for this have been thrown out of the window by the destruction of the education system by the present regime. Educating children was already a challenge previously but in 2008 it became a form of torture for parents. Teachers left, school buildings deteriorated, text and exercise books disappeared to be sold on the streets for exorbitant prices. Government did not even bother to buy chalk, and this burden, along with that of paying teachers, fell on the parents' shoulders. Zimbabwe, in the throes of a political and governance crisis, failed to safeguard the rights of children to an education and their right to a better future. The untold story of Zimbabwe is the impact of the crisis on the lives of our children - how these innocent souls will bear the terrible burden of our adult hatred and intolerance. On 9th March 2009, two WOZA leaders will be in the dock in Bulawayo Magistrate's Court facing a possible five years in prison for demanding political leaders allow free access to food aid for starving Zimbabweans. In the words of a police officer, this was a crime of 'exciting people'. In a justice system backlogged for years, with thousands of Zimbabweans in prison and unable to be fed or brought to court, the fact that this case has been prioritised is further proof that women human rights defenders continue to be harassed and intimidated merely for speaking out on behalf of their families. So a year after WOZA members were beaten and arrested in Bulawayo whilst commemorating International Women's Day, we still do not find anything in our hearts to celebrate. Instead we use this occasion to remind our leaders that actions speak louder than words. And to light a candle against the darkness so as to guide our steps on the road to a socially just Zimbabwe. WOZA will continue to demand bread and roses, a full enjoyment of all our social, economic, cultural and political rights and the social justice that will restore our dignity as women. By continuing to take the step forward, perhaps by the next International Women's Day, we will have something to celebrate. Mrs Susan Tsvangirai - WOZA mourns the loss of a mother to the nation Our troubled hearts are further burdened and saddened by the untimely death of Mrs Susan Tsvangirai. WOZA was looking forward to Susan being the mother to the nation that we have long waited for. We witnessed her dignity and strength in standing by the side of her husband during their 31 years of marriage and understand the unexpressed pain she must have endured watching her husband suffer at the hands of a brutal regime. We had hoped and prayed that she would enjoy a semblance of peace at his side as a mother of the nation. The loss of this mother of six and tower of strength to her husband is a shocking blow to the nation and all Zimbabwean women. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Prime Minister, their children who have lost their mother and rest of their family. May her soul rest in blessed peace at last. WOZA MOYA +++++++ Mayoral Musings revisited. Thank you so much for now 'officially' bestowing upon me the gracious title of Mayors of Parklands- I look forward to receiving my mayoral in due course. How well I remember the mayoral box at the large City Hall, as all the shows and pantomimes that you mentioned I actually participated in, being one of the dancers, names that come to mind are Vernon King, always the dame and absolutely hilarious, Binky Radstock and Geraldine Baron the babes in Babes in the Woods and a delightful leading lady called Isabel, her surname eludes me, but she had the most magnificent voice. One production, The White Horse Inn, had the first revolving stage ever in the then Rhodesia - real high technology - but it stuck a few times and there was much heaving and shoving to get it going again by the back stage staff - and if my memory serves me correctly it housed about 4 scenes, which if not moved to would have spelt disaster for the show, however it was all great fun and I loved every minute of it. The mayoral box and lounge were situated close to our dressing rooms, so we little girls, if we had nothing better to do, would 'spy' on all the dignitaries - lots of banter on the fashion of the day - fur capes, lots of sparkling jewelry and the like, such happy memories. Then after the show my sister and I would sit on the steps of the large City Hall with all our costumes waiting for our Dad to come and pick us up. We were always accompanied by Mr. Mathieson, who was the Caretaker of the City Halls, and would not leave us on our own, until our Dad arrived - if he took a little longer than normal, Mr. Mathieson would always teasingly threaten us with the 'Black Mariah' a big green Bedford police truck to take us home - imagine the relief when my Dad turned up!!! As we got a little older my mother allowed us to catch the last bus home, which would drop us right outside our home - the bus terminus in those days was housed in what is now the City Hall Car Park adjacent to the City Halls and do you recall that the building which up until recently housed the Art Gallery was in those days a huge vegetable market. Well there we go a few more memories to add to your archives Veronica. +++++++ 2) NOTICES Awaken your potential and live more awareness and understanding in your way of being who you really are. I recently moved to Brisbane, in July last year and knew that John and Jean were in Perth and had planned to try and visit Perth and contact them sometime, sooner rather than later. John was a great person, with an incredible sense of humour and showed and gave great camaraderie and support for his friends and especially those in Round Table. He was an integral part of BYO RT 3 in those years and when I joined in 1976. He was an Electrical Engineer with the Railways and the miniature Railway in Centenary Park, which was RT 3's biggest project, was very close to John's heart. Indeed, through Rhodesia Railways, John designed and built "Lady Morag", the Electric Engine, which was commissioned into the RT Railway service in Centenary Park in 1976. John is one of those people in life that you meet along the way and who make an everlasting impression. I am so sorry and John, my old Shamwari, I will raise a glass to you and remember the good times and the laughs. Hamba Gashle, and I trust that you are building a new railway in Heaven. I remember seeing Cliff Richard there, and going with my mom to see spiritualist Harry Edwards. But more enjoyable by far was the superb international pianist Peter Katin giving a Chopin recital, or my own wonderful piano teacher Henryk Mierowski playing Beethoven's 'Emperor' and Chopin's 2nd - both accompanied by Bulawayo's very own orchestra under the baton of that lovely man Derek Hudson. But one name leapt out at me and I was transported back almost forty years. Basic training, Llewellyn Barracks - that testing time in a young man's life when the comforts of home seem like a hazy and very distant dream. Sixpence Kinleyside was my hero. Although we never particularly knew each other, I admired him more than any other guy in the barracks - so much so that I can't really remember anyone else from our intake. Sixpence was the original Mr Cool. My abiding memory is from the chaos of early morning inspections. It never seemed like five minutes since the lights had gone out after last night's shine parades when they were back on again, and everyone started to get ready for the new day's six o' clock inspection. Everyone, that is, except Kinleyside. As all the rest of us fretted with bedpacks, nervously polished boots, boxed-off socks and vests...Kinleyside would be tucked up in his pit, seemingly dead to the world. As six o' clock drew ever nearer and panic stations seized all the rest of us, Kinleyside would have a leisurely stretch and a yawn, contemplate the mayhem around him and consider whether he had time for another forty winks. Morning after morning as I panicked along with all the others I would glance nervously at my hero and think he's never going to do it; he's leaving it too late this time. Then moving as if in slow motion Kinleyside would stir. To this day I don't know how he did it. But every morning without fail, as the barracks door swung open at six o' clock sharp to reveal Corporal Hunt looking like the proverbial grim reaper, Kinleyside would appear at the side of an immaculate bed, kit immaculately presented, aligned and displayed like all the rest of us. He was a bloody marvel. Later, when all the rest of us had started having to do guard duties, Kinleyside was getting himself excused to go play rugby for Llewellyn, or cricket or fencing or sailing or whatever... I forget what his relationship to Mayor Kinleyside was, and I never did know why he was called Sixpence (I think his real name was Ian). Our paths diverged after basic training, me to Chikurubi (It was an IntAf training school in those days), and I've no idea what became of him; but he still remains my all time hero of Llewellyn Barracks. +++++++ Here is a list of the most popular 7" single records in Rhodesia (by all artists, not just local ones) during the period 1965 to 1980, based on the length of time they spent on the retail record sales chart Lyons Maid Hits Of The Week (Radio 1 chart). VAN WYK Deutshland +++++++ 7) HARARE NEWS We are really wanting to keep the Resthaven complex in Rusape going, and at present our occupancy rate is hovering around 60%. Obviously, we are wanting to raise this figure, and I was wondering whether you knew of anyone who would want to move to Resthaven. I know that it sounds crazy, but in these difficult economic times, there may be people who cannot afford the rents in Hre. We are charging US$7 per month per cottage - water is free, but ZESA/Telone has to be paid for. We have a good doctor, and small private clinic, as well as dentist, vet etc. Although most supermarkets are basic, we have a new "dollar" shop which has opened and I think that this will go a long way to alleviating shopping blues in Rusape. Please also spread the word! Thank you. Just tell us when we will be welcome home +++++ INNOCENT VICTIMS is the story of how Meryl Harrison rescued thousands of animals stranded on farms during Zimbabwe's land invasions. In her sixties and with a heart condition, Meryl travelled with one or two young SPCA Inspectors and together they faced mobs of men who were often drugged or drunk and almost always armed with weapons ranging from sticks and stones to guns, knives and whips. Meryl drove thousands of kilometres to remote and abandoned farms; she and her colleagues went into "no-go areas" and faced war veterans, secret police, army and youth militia; they dismantled road barricades and went to places which even the Police said were dangerous and unsafe. There wasn't an animal too big, small, slippery or furry for Meryl and she rescued cats, dogs and goldfish. She and her team caught pigs, sheep, cows, goats and chickens. They saved horses and ponies, duikers and sable antelope and intervened on behalf of lions, hippos and ostriches. For some the heart of INNOCENT VICTIMS will be in Marmalade, the cat rescued from under the bath; for others it may be in Bokkie, the dog on Roy and Heather Bennett's farm who won an award for "/his exceptional bravery and loyalty to his owner and his family and his courageous action that saved their lives."/ Or maybe it will be the little un-named piglet which Meryl popped onto the floor of her truck while mobs of men raged, shouted and threatened all around her. All of the stories in /INNOCENT VICTIMS/ are the original first hand accounts taken from Meryl's personal diaries. Some of the rescues are gruesome and heartbreaking but others tell of great courage, ingenuity and joyous reunions. All tell of the extraordinary dedication and deep passion shown by one woman for the lives of many thousands of animals. /INNOCENT VICTIMS /is the story of an unsung and reluctant hero in Zimbabwe's darkest of times.
