Who the heck was Dante ? It was one of life's enchanted orchestral moments .... We heard it every few kilometers, it was not consistent but very strange and very loud.... at first we thought, with dread ... that there was something wrong with the car ... and we were all alone on the very quiet BeitBridge to Bulawayo road, it was after all, 5 a.m. and we had been up since two am, so nervously we tried to pretend it was not happening. The border crossing had been particularly stressful, we had thought that arriving at the Beitbridge border post at 2.30 in the morning, would ensure we avoided the endless queues, but we were seriously mistaken. There were literally dozens of buses and the silent line of border crossers wound its way for hundreds of meters nearly to the gate !! HeeHoo is a Patient Man and whilst I fretted, fumed and sat fed-up in the car, he stood stoically in the line in the pitch dark outside the customs and immigration hall. Eventually, curiosity got the better of my bad temper and I wandered off to investigate and chat with the populace. I had my camera, as always, but was too nervous to take pictures of the horrendous mishmash at the border post. There were people sleeping in every nook and cranny, blankets spread out in full view of the "authorities" . Every pavement was covered in goods, chattels and a seething mass of humanity, it is after all, a 24 hour border post, and people have 24 hour needs. However it was amazingly quiet, we Zimbos are an exceptionally peaceful people except for the likes of me, and apart from the occasional murmur when the queue jumpers were just too brazen, conversation was limited and it was quite cool, thank goodness. Beitbridge at midday is hell on earth, but as the dawn broke, it had an appeal all of its own.....but I could almost smell the cholera boiling under the surface of it all .... Previously on Morning Mirror I have made a point of being positive about Zim for the sake of the few tourists who might possibly still come and visit our beleaguered country, but right at the moment I am ashamed of my country and I would not want you to see just how dreadfully it has deteriorated. If the world does not help us somehow, there is going to be an humanitarian tragedy of hideous proportions. We got through in record time, only two whole hours ... this very week HeeHoo met some folk at the airport, they were flying back home instead of driving, because their cross border trip had taken ten hours !! It is actually not the Zim side that is the problem, it is the SA side "going slow in solidarity with their Zimbabwe brothers" I hope not, because one could develop cholera just standing in that line for so jolly long !!! Do us a favor, we are hungry, that's why we are crossing the border in such vast numbers, there is nothing, nothing, nothing to eat in Zimbabwe, at least nothing we can afford, as we have no money to buy it with !! Anyhow, back to that strange noise, it was like a continuous, deafening, harsh, singing sound. Whenever we heard it, we would open the window to listen, but the strange sound would suddenly retreat into the distance. Maybe the wheel was rubbing on something ? Maybe the engine was about to seize, maybe the canopy of the truck that we were driving, (packed full of essential staple foods for the 75 elderly residents of the Edith Duly Nursing Home,) was lifting somehow, and making this strange, discordant harshness ? Eventually we could ignore it no more. We stopped, got out, and the sound hit us like a brick wall. It was shrill, screeching, massive, unending ..... a cacophony of gigantic proportions, it was on one side of the road only, although the sound echoed on the other, absolutely deafening. It was of course, the call of the Christmas Beetle, the African Cicada, Albanycada albigera ...... It is a sound so familiar to all of us Africans but we had never ever heard it so loud and so unending. Beitbridge had just received its first rains, tinges of green were creeping through the packed hard earth, early-bird goats were tugging frantically at the first real food they had seen in many months, and the Cicadas were multiplying by their millions, by the second.... What an amazing sound, we stood in awed silence devouring the most poignant of all African sounds, memorizing each sacred minute, savouring the cool ethereal dampness of a land so beautiful and yet so desolate, so deserted, so incredibly sad. The sun was still way down on the horizon but it was already scorching, another day had started in Zimbabwe, where body and soul has to fight every moment of every day to stay alive. Dante's Inferno has nothing on life in Zim at this moment in time. "Abandon hope all ye who enter here", but Hark ! Hark at the Christmas Beetles, all is not lost .... another day is dawning ..... There are far worse things in the world than border queues and no food, we have found that out in a big way just recently. 'Tis but a blimp on life's curved ball and we will survive it, we all know that .... it is just a matter of time. +++++++ 2) NOTICES WATCH OUT FOR Carols by Candlelight Tuesday 9 December ROTARY SPONSORED ++++++ FETE........ PAB presents the Lyric Piano Trio [Cape Town] Thursday 4 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Booking at the Academy from Thursday 20 November. Tickets free to subscribers; price to non-members US$1.00 or equivalent. The year's live music ends with a very special concert. Many will remember the outstanding recital by cellist Peter Martens last year and he now returns as part of a piano trio whose other members are his wife Suzanne (violin) and Elna van der Merwe (piano). They're offering a big programme of outstanding music:Haydn: Piano Trio in G major - "Gypsy Rondo"; Ravel: Piano Trio in A minor; Brahms: Piano Trio No.1 in B major PAB and the Academy - Puccini: Turandot Friday 5 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Turandot was Puccini's last opera and is, of course, the home of Nessun dorma but it contains a lot more glorious music in Puccini's typical style as well as something very different in the exotic Chinese influences. This is a truly spectacular production from the Met in New York directed by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by James Levine with Eva Marton as Turandot and Placido Domingo as Calaf. PAB and the Academy - Karajan conducts Richard Strauss Monday 8 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation The second in the series features Strauss's self-portrait, "A Hero's Life", with virtuoso use of a vast orchestra in Karajan's last recording of the work made only a year before death in 1989. The programme will also include "Don Juan" in a performance conducted by Sir Georg Solti which will act as a curtain-raiser to the "Orchestra!" series to be shown in the first term 2009. PAB and the Academy - Something for Christmas Wednesday 10 December in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. Admission by donation In the last lunchtime talk of 2008, Peter Rollason & Michael Bullivant present a choice of Christmas music. PAB and the Academy - Handel's Messiah Friday 12 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Admission by donation A performance of Handel's oratorio recorded in the Pieterskerk, Leiden in the Netherlands by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge and the Brandenburg Consort conducted by Stephen Cleobury with soloists Lynne Dawson (soprano), Hillary Summers (alto), John Mark Ainsley (tenor) and Alastair Miles (bass). PAB and the Academy - Karajan conducts Richard Strauss Monday 15 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation The last of the series features "An Alpine Symphony" which was Strauss's last and longest symphonic poem. On one level it is a fifty-minute depiction of the ascent of an Alpine peak, at another an allegory of life scored with immense resource for an orchestra of over 120 players. PAB and the Academy - A Christmas Carol: Ballet Friday 19 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 8.00 p.m. "A Christmas Carol", premiered by the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992 and described as "an opulent mixture of ballet, musical and theatre", is closely based on Dickens' story and has a score by Carl Davis that incorporates many well-known carols. The production toured Britain, meeting with great success, and was even presented in China. The reviews were full of praise with the Guardian writing of "unassailable magic, the heartstrings are truly plucked" whilst the Daily Express recommended the ballet as "perfect Christmas entertainment" . There will be a supper interval from 6.30, i.e. BEFORE the performance but after the "Planet Earth" DVDs. PAB and the Academy - Puccini: La Boh me Tuesday 23 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. There will be a supper interval. The Puccini series ends with "La Boh me" on the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth on 23 December 1858 - and, as the first two acts of the opera are set on Christmas Eve, it is even more appropriate to show it at this time! Based on Zeffirelli's spectacular production from La Scala Milan, this DVD version is conducted by Herbert von Karajan, "second to none as a Puccini interpreter, pointing the great emotional climaxes unerringly", and features "Mirella Freni as a meltingly beautiful Mimi and the underrated Gianni Raimondi as a forthright Rodolfo with a ringing, unrestrained tenor". Medical aid arranged for it and also for the B & B to collect me from airport, transport me to hospital and collect, and to stay as and when necessary. It was a very well organised set up and as I see that quite a few Zimbos are going to Jhb for hospital treatment, thought you might like to advertise the set up for others who have no family in Jhb to call on. The accommodation is close to Milpark and Diedre caters for medical clients only and their family if necessary. Because we had been so depressed about being unable to afford any sort of a celebration, I had sent e-mails to family and friends around the world asking them, please, for a deluge of greeting cards to brighten the event for us. we now know that at least 17 people in Canada, the USA, England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa sent us cards, dating from early August to mid-September - all airmail. NOT ONE OF THESE CARDS HAS BEEN RECEIVED - not one!!!! Can you even begin to imagine how heartbreaking this is to us, not only because of the trouble family and friends went to to righten our anniversary, but also it is a very sad indictment on the Zimbabwean postal services. A postmistress at a London post office told my daughter that it was useless sending greeting cards to Zimbabwe as staff in the postal services there (Zim) opened all such cards as they hoped to find money (forex!) in them. ISNT THIS A SAD SITUATION... .. It may be worth advising your many readers that even Christmas cards might suffer the same fate, and to advise their friends and family not to waste their money. Oher mail gets thru - eventually; a weekly news magazine posted from London takes up to 6 weeks to arrive - airmail!! Its great to read the news when its already old hat... Keep up your wonderful work, and especially at Edith Duly. Love Alan and Julia DITCHBURN +++++++ Hi all, Just a note on whats happened here. Boycott the vendors. Just take the time and go past the trade fair entrance that goes to the Casino from about 8;00am to 10;00am and look at the river that flows in that open space. The vendors are washing plastic bags in the river and putting their produce in them, Tomatoes, cauliflower, brockly ect; and then selling it to you, THAT IS BAD. all the sanitary lanes are disgusting and they are used as toilets, the city council has given up on trying to keep Byo clean I think or they don't have the money to do what's needed, and now the rain is here all that flows in to the river that runs though town. (Think before you buy or don't buy from them) Fruit and vedg can be contaminated, All your veg must be washed and cooked thougherly, no more taking a carrot out of the bag and eating it at work before taking it home to the wife, fruit must be washed and pealed for example an Apple even use soap and rinse it well, another tip take a teaspoon of alginate and put it in you toilets and cisterns and in your plug holes and drains, if you have a water tank that feeds the house put a table spoon in 5000 lts, I was also told that in your washing up after eating just a pinch of alginate in the water will help keep bacteria at bay, If you have any TIPS to help this problem please pass it on. I love this city and I have never seen it as bad, because I never look hard enough, Cholera is no joke and if we can keep our homes clean we stand a chance. We need to clean our town, I suggest $1.00us per family paid to an accountant that looks after the money and get someone to clear the sanitary lanes? It will take months, but it's a start. someone was repairing pot holes to prevent tyre and car damage. now we need to sort out the town. What next? Keep clean Neville +++++++ Roses to the lovely ladies at Multi Choice who always bend over backwards to help you and treat their customers like very special people - not easy to find at the moment +++++ general info for folk wanting to visit Moz!! On a trip to Mozambique recently, we found: The drive from Byo to Mutare, via Chivu - Nyazura, good road. Via Machipanda border post. ...The border going out easy! Have rand with you in small bills to pay for road tax, third party insurance. Obey speed limits!! Fines are tough! Shop at the Pick and Pay in Chimoio before going further into Moz. The prices there better than Francistown (to compare!). If one is going to any sort of Lodge, take a supply of your own favourite foods, snacks and drinks!! A lot cheaper than shops in Inhassoro or Vilancoulos! ! The tills all have the ability to take US$, Rand or Mets and dispense change in Mets. No calculators to do exchange rates needed! The till does the exchange rate calculation automatically! ! (hmm wonder why we don't have them here??!!) Exchange rate 24 Mets :1US$ A delightful Motel 8 kms the other side of Chimoio called 'Milpark' on Beira rd.. It is fairly newly built...outstanding ! very modern Air con'd rooms, good food, freindly service and good price! Beira...disgustingl y filthy delapidated old town....nothing of its former glory left now! The sea dirty brown! Not a decent lodge or lodgings in the whole area! Inhassoro... .awesome! We stayed at Dugongs Lodge owned by a couple of our very own Bulawayo businessmen and run by a Bulawayo couple! A great tribute to what the matabeleland folk can do! The lodge ..awesome, right on the beach, the catering and management oustanding, Very nice 5 bedded self catering thatched 'A' frames or more upmarket aircon'd lodges also self catered. They can and will cater for you if you wish.....'n the seafood is GOOD and cheap too! The beach clean, the locals freindly and not 'in your face'....best holiday venue we've been to in 10 years! The sea every colour of blue you can imagine! The lodges have fridges and 2 plate cookers. FULL ZESA!!!! Budget on around US$120 per day per couple...accommodat ion, food and drinks (fairly conservative but certainly having enough!) Not including fuel or extra activities! Drive down to Vilancoulos 80 k's to snorkel for the day...it's more expensive to stay there! the shops there also rather expensive! Drive up the beach at low tide (get a permit!) to BD - 35 k's and surf fish off the Point..good fun and productive! take umbrellas ...no shade there at all! Lodge has boats for hire with crew. Go by boat and snorkel or fish off Paradise Island!! Coming back...don't buy charcoal until you have crossed back over the Save river bridge...you get fined for "no permits"! Do buy lotsa cashew nuts on the road. Expect to pay around 150 - 200 Mets for a kg bag! The border returning... .a real pain like beitbridge! Hundreds of people trying to clear and walk across...jam packed with vehicles.most likely looks worse tha it actually is...touts charge anything up to US100 to 'clear you through in minutes'.... bargain with them They do get the job done although it is nerve wracking to give your passports to a stranger! Don't pay until you are at the boom and 'cleared'! Total distance travelled +/- 2400 km's. To Inhassoro and back with no other riding around! Fuel cost in Chimoio was 36.5 mets a Liter. In Inhassoro, 42 mets a liter. ( Fuel cheaper in Byo if you can carry it with you!) Going in and out via Espungabera and on the dirt road. Whilst it is marginally shorter - though not quicker, the dirt road has its own hazards and the 'ferry' across the Save River is an experience for the patient...I am told! enjoy! Esme V. After overcoming breast cancer two years ago, she was recently diagnosed with cancer in her spine and unexpectedly went into a coma on October 25th. In her last days she was surrounded by her family and those who had come to love her here in Hermanus. The last hour of her life was truly magical. She suddenly became aware of us and everything we were saying, we held her and told her how special she was and how much we loved her. We passed on to her all the greetings and messages we have received from around the world and there is no doubt that she was aware of what we were saying and received all of your love. The final moments were peaceful and beautiful. We are grateful that this has happened so quickly and that she was spared any further suffering. Be obsessed about washing your hands with soap and drinking clean water. 3. Be aware of the symptoms - extremely watery, white diarrhoea. 4. Curing cholera is very simple: REHYDRATION using Oral rehydration solution, sugar and salt solution immediately. 5. Failure to observe the rule of rehydration immediately can result in severe dehydration and death. CAUSES - Cholera is caused by a bacteria. Not a virus. The bacteria is called Vibrio cholerae. - The main routes of faecal-oral transmission are through: o Not washing your hands with soap after the toilet or touching an infected person, o consuming contaminated water, o and eating contaminated food that is not cooked properly. SYMPTOMS - Once infected, a person can develop the symptoms within hours (but usually 2-3 days). The symptoms are extremely watery diarrhoea that is white in colour, like the colour of water from cooking rice. - However, 80% of people who are infected with the bacteria either do not show any symptoms at all or only get mild normal diarrhoea. - Cholera diarrhoea is painless. There are no cramps or other pain like other types of diarrhoea. - Cholera does not cause blood in the faeces. - There is no fever associated with cholera. - Vomiting is common. - Severe cholera can cause you to lose massive volumes of fluids (severe dehydration) in hours, which means that if rehydration does not take place quick enough, severe illness and death can occur. It is possible to lose from 10 to 20 litres per day. All of that must be replaced of course. Such severe dehydration will require medical rehydration using intravenous rehydration. - If you think you have the symptoms, go to your nearest health centre. Immediately. Even if it is 4 o'clock in the morning. - Cholera does not cause death. Severe dehydration causes death. RESPONSE - There is no reason at all that anyone should die of cholera, as it is a very easy disease to cure. - Simply it requires consumption of lots of ORS/Sugar and Salt Solution. - Once you think you have the symptoms mentioned above you should begin to consume a lot of ORS/Sugar and Salt Solution. - Sugar and Salt Solution is made as follows 6 teaspoons of sugar, and half a teaspoon of salt in a 750ml container. - Go to your nearest health facility. PREVENTION - Be obsessed about washing your hands. After BABY (defecating) , after shaking hands with people, after visits to the hospital or Cholera Treatment Centers, etc. This sounds obvious, but surprisingly we become very lazy at this. - Contaminated water is a major cause of getting cholera. Treatment of water is effective with chlorine or boiling for a minimum of one minute. If you're not sure its clean....DON'T DRINK IT. - For the duration of the outbreak do not consume market food that is uncooked or not cooked properly. This includes foods that have water sprinkled on them. Fruits that can be peeled such as bananas, oranges, etc are fine but remember to wash your hands with soap before peeling them. - Like most diarrhoeal bacterias, you can carry the bacteria for up to several weeks after being infected without being affected. It is important to always be careful - Aquatabs can be use to disinfect water. When using aquatabs: - Put one table into 20-25 litres of water and cover the container. - Wait for 30 minutes for the table to dissolve before drinking the water - Never swallow the tablet- it must dissolve in 20-25 litres of water - Note: Aquatabs are not for treating diarrhoea. The only disinfect water. ++++++++++++ + Looking for!! I am looking for a tread mill that is in good condition.
