CHERRY MISTMAS!

EXTRACT FROM THE AUSTRALIAN ETIQUETTE HANDBOOK

  1. Never take a beer to a job interview.

  2. Always identify people in your yard before shooting them.

  3. It's tacky to take an esky to church.

  4. If you have to vacuum the bed, it's time to change the sheets.

  5. Even if you're certain you're included in the will, it's rude to take the trailer to the funeral home.

Dining Out:

  1. When decanting wine from the box, tilt the paper cup and pour slowly so as not to "bruise" the wine.

  2. If drinking directly from the bottle, hold it with only one hand.

Entertaining in Your Home:

  1. A centrepiece for the table should never be anything prepared by a taxidermist.

  2. Don't allow the dog to eat at the table, no matter how good his manners.

Personal Hygiene:

  1. While ears need to be cleaned regularly, this should be done in private, using one's OWN ute keys.

  2. Even if you live alone, deodorant isn't a waste of money.

  3. Use of toiletries can only delay bathing a few days.

  4. Dirt and grease under the fingernails is a no-no, as it detracts from a woman's jewelry and alters the taste of finger foods.

Dating (Outside the Family):

  1. Always offer to bait your date's hook, especially on the first date.

  2. Be assertive. Let her know you're interested: "I've been wanting to go out with you since I read that stuff on the dunny door two years ago."

  3. Establish with her parents what time she's expected back. Some will say 10:00 PM, others might say "Monday." If the latter is the answer, it's the man's responsibility to get her to school on time.

Theatre Etiquette:

  1. Crying babies should be taken to the lobby and picked up after the movie ends.

  2. Refrain from talking to characters on the screen. Tests have proven they can't hear you.

Weddings:

  1. Livestock is a poor choice for a wedding gift.

  2. Kissing the bride for more than five seconds may get you shot.

  3. For the groom, at least, rent a tux. A track suit with a cummerbund and a clean football jumper can create a tacky appearance.

  4. Though uncomfortable, say "yes" to socks and shoes for the occasion.

Driving Etiquette:

  1. Dim your headlights for approaching vehicles, even if the gun's loaded and the roo's in sight.

  2. When approaching a round-about, the vehicle with the largest tyres doesn't always have the right of way.

  3. Never tow another car using panty hose and duct tape.

  4. When sending your wife down the road with a petrol can, it's impolite to ask her to bring back beer, too.

Marden Singers and Rotary in Support Of Zimbabwean Musicians Present

HANDEL’S MESSIAH

This famous and popular oratorio is planned for Wednesday 27th November 2002 at 7.30 pm at Mary Magdalene Church – Avondale and on Friday 29th November 2002 at 7.30 pm at Nazareth House Chapel in Harare

In celebration of the eclipse, Mardens will be joining the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in a performance of the Messiah as an opening to their Festival week on Sunday 1st December 2002 at St John’s Cathedral at 5.30pm.

Our guest star at all performances will be the popular and accomplished South African Tenor, Delwynne Windell who will also give a recital in Bulawayo on Monday 2nd December 2002.

For us, the Messiah is a great occasion and a preparation for Christmas and we are very honoured to be supported by all Rotarians of Zimbabwe. Ticket sales will be at Greatermans (Harare) and Meikles (Bulawayo) and at the door. There will be guarded parking.

Rotary and the “PolioPlus” Worldwide have pledged to eradicate Polio throughout the world and have launched a one off fund raising campaign, dubbed, ‘Fulfilling Our Promise’ (to the children of the world) to bridge the ‘funding gap’. Rotary has pledged to raise US$80 million. This will be matched 4 to 1 by several major donors, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in order to meet the total of US$400 million required. Every Z$55.00 raised in Zimbabwe is recognized as US$1.00 by Rotary. Proceeds from the Messiah will go towards this worthy cause.

THE CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The British Government runs a worldwide scholarship scheme called the Chevening Scholarship Programme. Each year this programme offers over 2,000 talented young professionals, in their early to mid career, the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK, usually for a period of between 3 and 12 months. We offer a number of awards to Zimbabweans (usually about ten people are selected each academic year).

This programme is advertised widely in the press but here are details of this year's scheme, to pass on to anyone who you think might be interested. The competition is tough, but we are always keen to encourage applications from high calibre candidates. We are also hoping that more women will apply. In the past we have received fewer applications from women than men and this has been reflected in the scholarships we have offered. We will not be operating a quota system but we do wish to encourage applications from female candidates.

Anyone interested can find further details on the High Commission website, www.britainzw.org, or on the Chevening website, www.chevening.com, which covers the worldwide programme. The deadline for applications is 30 November.

An Old Lady's Poem

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
What are you thinking when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.....

Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill....
Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse; you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters, who love one another.

A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

At twenty-five now, I have young of my own,
Who need me to guide and a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,
But my man's beside me to see I don't mourn.
At fifty once more, babies play round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;
I look at the future, I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman. and nature is cruel;
Tis jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I'm loving and living life over again.

I think of the years -all too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, nurses, open and see, ..,
Not a crabby old woman; look closer ...see ME!!

Dogs at your gate - Warning

Please forward the following warning to all on your address list:

Our friendly "neighbours" have a new strategy for getting our attention and our goods. They are placing dogs at the gates to homes during the night hours, these dogs will howl, wake you up, begging you to go down to the gate and find out what is causing their pain. Should you do this you will be met by a group of thugs who will help you dispose of your belongings.

They are also holding dogs down on the road and will try to flag you down (in the middle of the day) and should you decide to be of assistance, you will be dispossessed of your vehicle (at the very least!)

PLEASE TAKE THIS WARNING SERIOUSLY

Pickle Jars Wanted

You may not know it, but ZimGlass in Gweru have burnt out their furnace, which is very bad news for those of us who use their products. I have been unable to get hold of 125ml sauce bottles for almost 5 months now, as well as the 250ml pickle jar. They've just run out of the 125 ml screw cap bottle (the little garlic size) and the standard 375ml pickle bottle. We're faced with closing up the pickle business or making a new plan to get bottles. Here's my plan. Most households throw their bottles away most schools need extra funding I'd like to see a recycling project with the schools gathering CLEAN used jam/pickle/sauce bottles and me paying the school for them. Everyone wins. What do you think? Please put it to your school fund raising boards/council whatever and come back to me. and any odd sized or shaped bottles. I put this in because in the past when we have taken recycled bottles, these types have been a problem Please come back to me ASAP if you can help. Initially I'm proposing $10 a bottle (CLEAN) with it's lid Hope you can help

Using The Word "God"

CBS will be forced to discontinue "Touched by an Angel" for using the word God in every program. Madeline Murray O'Hare, an atheist, successfully managed to eliminate the use of Bible reading from public schools a few years ago. Now her organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission( FCC) in Washington, DC. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America.

They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand!

If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped. This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools! You as a Christian can help! We are praying for at least 1 million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country.

As Christians we must unite on this. Please don't take this lightly. We ignored this lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Now, please sign your name at the bottom.

Don't delete anything, just go to the next number and type your name. Please do not sign jointly, such as Mr. & Mrs. Each person should sign his/her own name. Please e-mail this to everyone you know, and help us defeat this organization and keep the right to our freedom of religion. When you get to 1000, please e mail back to Lisa Norman:

FAREWELL

We pay tribute and say farewell to the following wonderful Bulawayo Folk

MEL MARILLIER

It is with regret that I am leaving Zimbabwe (hopefully temporarily) and heading for the UK, due to family commitments and the economic situation prevailing here.

andreachris@rhodes2.freeserve.co.uk

This is the address of my daughter and her husband, where I will be starting off in the UK.

COLIN MARTIN

Colin will be leaving Bulawayo in December and Judy will follow at some time in the future.

Colin was born in Bulawayo and being 4th generation Rhodesian it is another sad scenario him being forced to leave. His maternal g. grandfather who was an engineer worked for Pauling on the railway line from the Congo (our family came on that line from Leopoldville) and helped build the Vic. Falls bridge. His wife being the first white woman to walk across the bridge after completion.

Colin farmed at Esigodini for 33 years having bought the farm at the age of 24 and commuted to work at the bank for 2 years and then Internal Affairs for 10 1/2 yrs.

In the small Esigodini Community in this time he was Club chairman, Treasurer, Church Treasurer, Farmers association chairman, ICA chairman and tennis chairman and treasurer.

When chased off the farm had to sell all livestock including pedigree Brahman stud, commercial herd, sheep and goats and left behind a beautiful home and garden.

Since had a report that the entire orchard and garden now dead! He uplifted a lot of his special plants and bulbs and many thanks go to our numerous kind friends who have looked after them.

Also grateful thanks to our friends who stored furniture and equipment for months.

During this period of stay in Esigodini (Essexvale) met and made wonderful friends who are now scattered around the world.

Colin leaves to open his antique shop in Cape Town and hopes we will all meet up again under happier circumstances and wishes everyone well.

God Speed to a Wonderful man.

CONDOLENCES

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Nic Bakker (formerly of Maison Nic)
