Half of the population has already been incarcerated for various spurious reasons and the other half looks destined for the same treatment, so we thought a few hints on how to "dress during detention" would go down really well ..... if you are interested in viewing our range do let me know !! While still on the prison theme, one of the most humbling experiences in my life was being with my 20 cell mates when they began to pray during one of the long interminable mornings. One lady would start a prayer and talk unabated for a long time, and when she had finished one of the others would take up prayer duty, and they were all kind enough to speak in English so that I could understand what they were saying. Prayer is universal all over the world but their prayers were different in many ways... Not once did they ask God for anything ! They thanked Him copiously for their simple blessings, for their families, their children, their meagre homes and belongings, they thanked Him in fact for everything they had, which believe me, was not very much, and as I said ... never once asked Him for anything... How sad I feel for my Countrymen these cold winter days, for those who spend time in prison for nothing at all, for those who live on pavements or in ditches, for those activists who are running for their very lives, for who have been hurt or maimed or killed. Across the Border, where millions have fled for safety and employment, life is just as tough, since the Xenophobia attacks began earlier this month. Totally incapable of staying out of trouble, last week while we were in Johannesburg SheHoo Must Sing and I went with our Bodyguard Adam aka "Heehoo Must Tease" - to visit Alexandra and Ramaposa townships. We were actually chasing down Morgan Tsvangirai who was visiting the Xenophobic trouble spots and being blond we did not think there might be problem with two blonds in a Zim registered car !! The cops soon spotted us and guided us to the safety of a nearby refugee camp in a church where hundreds of displaced "foreigners" were being housed and fed, very reminiscent of Murambatsvina in our own country.... Now our Bodyguard is fluent in Ndebele and pretty soon we were surrounded by dozens of Zimbabweans with their own particular sad horrendous tales. The BodyGuard's Mum got out her little black book and in no time at all we had pages of names of Zimbabweans, living ...... nay...existing in Johannesburg, but with abounding trades and talents that need to be publicised. Most of these folk were degreed having qualified as doctors, accountants, chemists and lawyers, but because of visa and work permit problems were reduced to working as labourers to make ends meet. If you need a good carpenter, painter, brick layer, domestic worker, seamstress, electrician , motor mechanic, sales rep or anybody honest and hard working, I have numerous names and phone numbers. e mail me on magskriel@mac. com +++++++ 2) NOTICES Homes In Zimbabwe A date for your diary! 9th October 7 p.m. Peter Godwin lectures at the Royal Geographical Society London. We have sourced in SA and already paid for all the materials required - approx R180,000 We now await the sourcing of the new gauges required Arrangements are already in place to move these materials from Durban to Bulawayo A committee is in place to organise the "demolition" of the present cremator in preparation for the professional cremator (from SA) who will carry out the actual building of the new one, and work begins next week. A technician will do the final commissioning and provide details of operational procedures. A trust is being formed not only to control present expenditure, but also to provide funds for the ongoing maintenance and operations of the cremator If you would like further information please contact Kathy Booysen (Datvest), our treasurer, with financial queries or myself - she will certainly be able to answer your questions whilst I will "try my best"! Thank you all for your support - we just never know how soon we may need this facility!! Neil Todd.(Act Chairman)lifts Ph: 243336 Mail:neiltodd@gatorzw. com +++++++ LIFE AFTER THE FESTIVAL PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO We have plenty of music lined up for you in June but life after the Festival has been considerably complicated by ZESA! - though, before moving on to that, I should thank ZESA for their co-operation during the Festival. As you may have noticed, there were virtually no power cuts for its entire duration, just a short one early on Saturday morning which was evidently an error! We are very grateful. However, it would seem that the load-shedding schedules have been revised and the Academy's periods without power completely altered. I'm hoping for written confirmation (has anyone got hold of a copy of the revised listings?) but have been told verbally that the Academy is now scheduled for morning cuts on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays with the afternoon/evening cuts on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. This, of course, has a decided impact on the DVD evenings as the projector cannot be powered by an inverter so we shall have to change completely the days on which we show DVDs. In addition the Academy has other hall bookings for June so it's not possible to bring The Merry Widow forward by 24 hours which means we will have to postpone it to the following Friday, 13 June. There are other complications too and, until in particular we have some certainty of the ZESA schedules, the following can only be a provisional summary of the events we are planning for June: Thursday 5 June at 5.15 p.m. Mahler: Symphony No.8 Monday 9 June at 5.00 p.m. Academy Concert: Natascha Muller & Amy Wawn Thursday 12 June at 1.10 p.m. Leonard Bernstein discusses Das Lied von der Erde Friday 13 June at 6.30 p.m. Lehar: The Merry Widow Thursday 19 June at 5.15 p.m. Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde Thursday 26 June at 1.10 p.m. Four Ways to Say Farewell: Leonard Bernstein discusses Mahler's Ninth Symphony Friday 27 June at 5.30 p.m. Rimsky-Korsakov: Sadko Thursday 3 July at 5.15 p.m. Mahler: Symphony No.9 All events in June are in the Robert Sibson Hall. Some details: STUDENT CONCERT Two of the Academy's most promising students will be taking piano exams shortly, Natascha Muller Grade 6 and Amy Wawn Grade 7, and they will play all their exam pieces in a short concert on Monday 9 June at 5.00 p.m. - so come and support Bulawayo's rising talent! No entry charge though donations will not be refused... OPERAS Two very different operas in June - and both with supper intervals! Lehar's The Merry Widow on FRIDAY 13 JUNE is too well-known to need any introduction and receives a sumptuous staging from the Zurich Opera with at least one surprise - on this occasion, the male septet lamenting the difficulties of dealing with women is countered by a female septet detailing the fairer sex's problems with men! Two weeks later on FRIDAY 27 JUNE, there will be a novelty in the shape of Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov who died a hundred years ago on 20 June 1908, so this will represent an appropriate centenary tribute. Although best remembered for Scheherazade, the Capriccio espagnol and other orchestral works, Rimsky was primarily an operatic composer with fifteen to his credit. Sadko is one of the finest and Robert Layton has written that "for this listener, at least, the finest of the Rimsky-Korsakov operas bring to life a world of magic and mystery, and Sadko in particular with its fairy-tale atmosphere exhibits an imagination and innocence that are quite special." It tells an exotic tale of the sea-faring adventures of the legendary minstrel Sadko and Valery Gergiev directs a huge cast in a truly spectacular staging from the Kirov Opera including an under-sea ballet and all manner of delights. "A shimmering fairy tale of an opera.. lovely tunes to beguile the ear" [Amazon.com] . Tickets for both operas: $20 000 000.00. Programmes will be available in advance at the Academy and there will be a supper interval at both operas. MAHLER The Mahler cycle continues on Thursday 5 June with the vast Eighth Symphony which calls for eight soloists, boys' chorus [the Vienna Boys Choir on this occasion], adult choruses and huge orchestra. Two weeks later on Thursday 19 June, in the strongest contrast comes Das Lied von der Erde, the song-symphony considered by many to be Mahler's greatest work. Admission: $10 000 000.00 LUNCHTIME TALKS These will be given by Leonard Bernstein in June! He recorded introductions to Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde and the Ninth Symphony so we'll show these prior to the performances. Wednesday lunchtimes are another power cut problem at the Academy so, to be on the safe side, these lunchtime DVDs will be shown on Thursdays, not Wednesdays - so Thursday 12 & 26 June. Admission: $5 000 000.00 More to come in July including, we hope, on Monday 14 July the Drakensberg Boys Choir - so mark the date down now! Best wishes as always, MICHAEL BULLIVANT ++++++++ Tour de Falcon - Sunday 6 July. 56 km cycle ride for the whole family - individual social, individual elite, scholars and teams of four. Researchers now point out that giving people a compliment activates the same reward center in the brain as paying them cash! "We found that these seemingly different kinds of rewards -- a good reputation versus money -- are biologically coded by the same neural structure, the striatum," said Dr. Norihiro Sadato in Japan.
