A visit to Gauteng in South Africa is an experience not to be missed, especially if one's vehicle boasts Zimbabwe registration plates !! Visiting Zimbabweans in Joburg can be identified quite easily because their mouths hand open awkwardly in a kind of looney grin, a cross between that of Disney's Pluto the dog with his tongue hanging out, and the inane leer of that hyena in The Lion King, I forget momentarily what his name is ..... was it perchance "Ed" ? All these wonderful goods on the shelves for sale ? Oh my goodness, oh my goodness ...... My sister in law cannot get over how excited I get about the smallest things, things which actually irritate the locals, but which give me immense joy. Bread, hot fresh, soft sliced bread, sitting in aromatic mountains on the shop shelves !! Zimbabwe bread is usually baked at home or purloined from the back door of the bakery (sans anything even remotely resembling a plastic bag ) where queues stretch as far as the eye can see. Milk, rows and rows of icy white containers and actually purchased in a supermarket !! Zimbabwe supermarkets have not had milk for many months now, rather go with your container to an unhygienic alley and decant your litre into an old mazoe bottle (a very very very old mazoe bottle as mazoe left our shelves six months ago !!) Oh the joy of visiting a service station and saying "fill er up !!" with a flourish !! In Zimbabwe one keeps one's fuel in a 44 gallon drum in the store room and one measures it with a wooden stick to see that it does not "evaporate" and then decants it gingerly (do not spill a drop please Sebastian( who is my faithful retainer) !!) it is liquid gold and very very desirable !! OMG And while you are at it Seb, check the oil and water, (the last time I had my oil and water checked at a garage was about five years ago !) And the radio, oh the glorious multitudes of channels, all worth listening too, lovely music, brilliant diction, excellent commercials, how I miss a good old fashioned radio show ..... Yesterday I went to the butchery section in a Cresta supermarket. .. (tongue lolling out a la Pluto ) ..... I fondled the meat lovingly, vacuum packed beautifully in clean strong hygienic packaging.. pink and beckoning... .. The last time I bought meat in Zim it arrived in a bloody lump in a second hand fertiliser bag, on the back of an open truck ..... I waved aside the flies and repacked the meat into used second hand Spar carrier bags, sucking the air out through a straw, a kind of Zimbabwean vacuum speciality of which the rest of the first world is totally unaware !! I gaze in awe at the "roller meal" the staple diet of 99% of Zimbabweans. Packaged neatly on S.A. supermarket shelves, in military rows. I shudder as I remember my last roller meal purchase in Zimbabwe. I was summoned secretively by "Under Cover Brother" who met me on the street corner, we drove together in chatty silence to an abandoned house in Killarney Bulawayo, where a sixty KG bag of "maize meal" was hoisted into my truck, courtesy of the Zimbabwe National Army !! Much much changing of crisp new $750 thousand Zimbabwe dollars was undertaken, and after tasting said "maize meal" with a practised tongue to establish it was not sand, I sailed off happily with my bounty, leaving "Under Cover Brother" happily arguing with RSM Moyo about the booty !! But back to a Zimbabwean in Gauteng in Zim registered number plates .... I am an instant hit at every service station, every parking area, every single intersection! ! Waves, smiles, thumbs up, the open handed MDC wave..... I get an aching face and an aching arm, as I greet the hundreds of thousands of Zimbabwean exiles who live in Johannesburg and who are thrilled to see a Zim number plate and a friendly face from "home".. After making excited small talk about whereabouts we are all from, and talking about the sad sad situation back home, my final spiel is always "Come home in March and vote" your country needs you like never before !! ++++++++++++ 2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH Compared with Harare, Bulawayo rain is more imperative for different reasons and is actually about 65% of Harare's annual precipitation. In the second week of December one of our dams went from 2% to 60% and, just before Christmas, we had received nearly 60% of our annual rainfall (14 inchces/350mm) and we had received reservoir in-flows of three times of the whole of the previous year (25 inches/ 625mm). Rivers were flowing, green grass flourished and everything was soggy. If the rain had stopped then, we would have experienced one of our driest years since records began in 1897. This goes to show that it is not the amount of rain that necessarily fills our dams, but how rain falls. Last December was the 7th wettest since the century before last and was the wettest in 30 years. If the rain continues at this rate, we will receive a projected total of over 50 inches, 208% of normal. What this story tells us is that our patience and resolve has been tested to the limit and it also shows us that we must never give up and always have hope and faith. From a position of absolute despair, and in a relatively short time, we have triumphed in terms of the availability of water for this thirsty city and its people, defying the pessimists. SS ++++++ "I am sure many of us in Bulawayo have had our power supply negatively affected recently by the recent heavy rains, and more particularly the accompanying storms, which have caused many faults on the lines. (Please do not misunderstand - I am not complaining about the wonderful rains!). Those of us resident in Fortunes Gate / Matsheumhlope area have been affected very badly, with loss of power for a couple of weeks over the Christmas period and various other significant faults developing since late November. In all, we have not had a single uninterrupted day of power since 26 November. I am sure we were not the only ones, however. In my dealings with ZEDC, I learned a few things which I thought I should pass on. We are all aware that ZESA / ZEDC are extremely short of resources. We residents of Bulawayo should not underestimate this problem. At any one time, Bulawayo east has no more than 7 electricians available, of which maybe two or three are on duty at any one time. There are no more than two, at best three, old, dilapidated vans servicing the entire Bulawayo east area. There are very few major spares available. ZEDC is regularly out of fuel, and many of us, I am sure, have had the privilege of delivering our 5 litres of petrol to the Lobengula Street depot. Importantly, those few people available to do an incredibly demanding job are severely overworked. They are working long shifts (up to 14 hours) under very stressful conditions. Anyone who has tried to phone the control centre or faults lines will confirm the very high demand for faults rectification services. We are also all fully aware that our country's generation capacity is limited (I understand that Kariba is now temporarily down, the cause for the current bout of severe load shedding), as are our imports. Therefore, the last thing we all need is outages caused by faults. One of the major causes of faults over the past few weeks has been trees or branches of trees falling on wet power lines, causing shorts, and worse still, line breakages. In many instances these trees are inside peoples' yards, and under the residents' direct responsibility. I understand that there was a time when ZESA / ZEDC were responsible for trimming those trees and clearing the lines of all branches. Given the stretched resources of ZEDC, I am sure we all appreciate that this is not going to happen and probably never will again. ZEDC has eight petrol driven chain saws at Lobengula Street, all of which are broken and out service. There are no resources to have them repaired (Any volunteers?) . I recently watched a repair team chop down a fairly large gum tree impeding a power line with nothing more than one panga, and offered a small saw which only helped a little. We can all complain about misdirected resources, corruption, poor infrastructure etc., none of which will help. I am convinced, based on my (considerable) experience in dealing with ZEDC over the past two months, that there are many individuals within that organisation who are honest, hard working and committed to delivering a decent service. Unfortunately, they are unable to do so for lack of resources available to them. Therefore, three things. Can we give the ZEDC staff that are "on the ground" our support wherever possible? Complaining, without action, even if the complaint is valid, will not help. Do something to help get your power supply restored - offer transport / fuel willingly. Secondly, and more importantly, if you have trees, branches etc. in your area which have the potential to damage the line or cause a problem, sort them out. Get your neighbours involved and remove defaulting trees etc. Even if they are not your direct responsibility, you will get involved unwillingly when those trees cause a fault on your line or circuit. On more than one occasion, ZEDC officials have asked me to speak to my neighbours and neighbourhood about trees, as they are the major cause of many problems. Thirdly, please report anything you see that may cause a problem. Do not assume that if you lose power it is caused by load shedding, especially if it is raining and / or windy. At the moment, loss of power may well be caused by a fault. If you are unable to get through to the faults / control centre lines, go to Halco House (office entrance) and they will help you to contact faults directly. For those who are unaware, the faults / control centre numbers are 290890/1/2 or 011 615 128. It is difficult to get through, but please persevere. Thank you. Iain Sheasby, Fortunes Gate." ++++++++++++ + 3) NOTICES PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO The main purpose of this newsletter is to bring you more details of the first concert of 2008. However, there are quite a few events coming up in the next two weeks, three of them this week so perhaps I should begin with a diary! Wednesday 16 January at 1.10 Mahler, A Personal Introduction: Michael Bullivant Friday 18 January at 5.30 Harmony for Humanity 1 - at the National Gallery Saturday 19 January at 2.00 Harmony for Humanity 2 - at Mpopoma High School And then: Wednesday 23 January at 5.30 DVD: Mahler: Symphony No.1 + Mahler in Rehearsal Wednesday 30 January at 1.10 Piano Nonsense: Peter Rollason Thursday 31 January at 7.30 Cristina Granero (flute) & Yuki Matsushima (piano) Taking the last first, this concert has been arranged in association with the Spanish Embassy and details are as follows: CRISTINA GRANERO (FLUTE) & YUKI MATSUSHIMA (PIANO) Robert Sibson Hall 7.30 p.m. on Thursday 31 January Booking opens at the Academy on Wednesday 16 January Tickets: $2 000 000.00 - but free to subscribers Cristina Granero was born in Jodar (Spain) and is a graduate of the Conservatory in Granada. She then went to London where she studied at the Trinity College of Music with Wissam Boustany (who will be well remembered here) and at the Royal College of Music with Paul Edmund-Davies. Currently she is studying at the Musik Hochschule in Cologne with Professor Robert Winn. From 1998 to 2001 she was a member of the Youth Orchestra of Andalusia and she has worked with several Spanish orchestras. In 2001 she received the Honours Diploma in the International Music Competition of Zaragoza, in 2003 she won the second prize in the soloist category in the Arjau competition in Barcelona and in 2005 she obtained first prize at the Juventudes Musicales Competition. Yuki Matsushima was born in Mie, Japan. She studied at the Mitsue Nozue School of Music and subsequently at the Mushahino School of Music under Noriko Rwanda in Tokyo before going on to take a post-graduate course at the Trinity College of Music with Penelope Roskell. She is currently studying in London with the pianist Yonty Solomon - whom some of you might remember playing for us more than twenty years ago! We don't have full programme details yet but it will include the Fantasy on Themes from Carmen by Francois Borne as well as works by Ian Clarke, Krzysztof Zgraja, Salvador Brotons and Andre Jolivet. None of these are exactly household names but I hope this won't prevent your coming to what I'm sure will be a splendid start to our year. We have been trying to persuade the Spanish Embassy to bring their musicians to Bulawayo as well as Harare for some time and hope that this opportunity to work with them in organising a major recital will be the first of many. A good audience will be an encouragement to them to send more musicians to Bulawayo in the future, so do try to support us! A note for subscribers: since booking for all concerts is now at the Academy, we've decided to do away with membership cards this year - they're probably a nuisance to you, quite a few always seem to get lost and we think they're no longer really necessary. There will be an up-to-date list of members with the booking plan and your name will simply be ticked off when you book. I hope this will run smoothly - and I should be close at hand if it doesn't! Although this will be our first Sibson Hall concert, there are two prior to that, as already announced, but perhaps a reminder is in order: HARMONY FOR HUMANITY In conjunction with the U.S.Embassy and in memory of Daniel Pearl, the Academy is presenting two hour-long concerts compered by Albert Nyathi and featuring students and other local performers. The first is on Friday 18 January at the National Gallery at 5.30 p.m. and the second Saturday 19 January at Mpopoma High School at 2.00 p.m. The recently arrived American Ambassador should be present at both concerts. There is no admission charge but donations will be welcome! The performers will include Susan Moyo (guitar and voice), Brian Hartman (guitar), Nathaniel Ngwenya (guitar), Savannah Plaskitt (violin), Christopher Mkhize (recorder), Lauren Meikle (flute), Shirley Jerrard (oboe), Rosemary Green (piano), Jill Wild (piano), the ZAM Marimba Band, the Pasichigare Mbira Ensemble, Mkande Mbakumba Drum and Dance and the Afro Jazz Guitar Trio. And another reminder! ILLUSTRATED LUNCHTIME TALKS AND EARLY EVENING DVDS There will be a series of illustrated talks and DVDs at the Academy every Wednesday alternating between lunchtime and early evening. Lunchtime talks will initially be by Peter Rollason or myself (but, we hope, others in due course) under the general heading of "Having Fun with Music" and all will include plenty of music as well as talk whilst the early evening DVDs will feature the whole cycle of Mahler Symphonies during the first and second terms. The January sessions begin with an introduction to Mahler this coming Wednesday, 16 January at 1.10. Several people have told me they know little about him or his music and would like some background so I thought I'd try to fill in some of it and give my own experience of Mahler to whose music I've been devoted for not far short of fifty years - I discovered him as a schoolboy in his centenary year of 1960! The symphonies will all be conducted by Leonard Bernstein, mainly with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Admission for the whole of the first term (five talks and five DVDs) will be $3 000 000.00 and single sessions $300 000.00 in January but rising each month. All proceeds from the talks and DVDs will go to the Hudson Fund. Talks will be in Room 25, DVDs in the Sibson Hall. Subscriptions are still welcome at the Academy but the rate is now subject to increase so hurry if you want to qualify for the $10 000 000 special offer! The subscription will cover the DVD opera evenings but NOT the lunchtime talks and Mahler symphonies which are an Academy promotion. And one last thing! By popular demand, the next DVD opera on 16 February will include a supper interval so will begin at 6.30 and not 7.30 as previously announced! Perhaps a diary for February to end: Wednesday 6 February at 5.30 Mahler: Symphony No.2 Wednesday 13 February at 1.10 Having Fun with Music Thursday 14 February at 6.00 : Deon Marcus (piano) - a Valentine's Day Concert Saturday 16 February at 6.30 : Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore Wednesday 20 February at 5.30 Mahler: Symphony No.3 Tuesday 26 February at 7.30 : Jan Novotny (piano) Wednesday 27 February at 1.10 Having Fun with Music Best wishes as always, Michael Bullivant +++++++ PRH is a School of Education and of Psychology for adult growth and self development. They were driving a white Toyota Cressida and they flashed me to pull off The road. Which I did but something said this is not quite right On of the guys jumped out of the passenger seat and appeared to be talking On a radio attached to his jacket lapel. The guy who jumped out was dressed in some type of uniform. I made sure the car was locked and only rolled down the window and inch or two. He asked me to exit and I refused asking to see his badge. That's when I noticed it said "Tourist Police: I asked what a tourist police was and what he wanted. He said he was searching for drugs. He started to walk around the car and It was at this point that my wife pointed out that the number plate was partially covered. If you look at some of the police official police vehicles they now have a corruption hot line printed on them. Because of the fifteen road blocks we were subjected to on our way in we decided to write it down. So when he came back to the window I told him that I was cooling this line to verify his Existence. He then graciously told me that he could see that we were not carrying drugs and hastily jumped in the vehicle and drove off. My absolute dream would be to be able to return home to Bulawayo with all the family together again instead of being spread far and wide all over the world. I never cease to be amazed at how everyone is coping with the hardships that you are all facing. I take my hat off to you all. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year and we will continue to pray that 2008 is going to be a good one. With very best wishes. The loofahs used in the soaps, grow wild off the tender clinging vine - the luffa aegyptiaca - in the lowveld and the Zambezi Valley. They are handpicked by villagers who live in these remote areas, and are delivered to us from as far as 500kms by various modes of transport. The loofahs are then sun dried, peeled, washed, de-seeded and dried again. Hand selection takes place in selecting the correct size loofah to fit the mould. The soap is made using high percentages of natural oils which are poured over each loofah. We wait for the soaps to set and then each is individually removed from the mould and trimmed and polished by hand. The wrapping and packing process takes place by hand. We believe that this is what makes our product so unique - you really have a piece of Africa in your hands. Enjoy our products they are naturally a part of Africa. At present the range consists of: - Loofah Soaps Glycerin Soaps Exotic Bath Soaks Sugar Bath Cubes Endangered Guest Soaps Not forgetting our unique Earthchild Eau de Parfum Which come in six exciting African inspired fragrances - Zambezi Wild Berry - Zambezi Rain Forest - Marula and Jojoba Oil - Baobab and Tea Tree Oil - Rose Oil and Apricot -----soon to be replaced by African Love flower. - Savannah Aloe afearthworks@ mweb.co.zw ++++++ Overnight Accommodation FRANCISTOWN MODERN Cottage in Private Garden Kitchen + Bathroom Air-Conditioned Self Catering Secure with Electric Fence CONTACT Johan Cloete 00 267-72-101460 Riana Cloete 00 267-71-428565 ++++++ ROSE VALLEY BUTCHERY PHONE 78619 OR 0912861535 TO PLACE YOUR ORDER.. My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .....she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognised, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNISING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognise the symptoms of a stroke Now doctors say a bystander can recognise a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is CROOKED if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved. ++++++ "Let it never be asked of any of us - what did we do when we knew another was oppressed" - Nelson Mandela -
