PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO ECLIPSE FESTIVAL! You may be thinking that PAB has been a bit quiet recently. In one sense we have in that there have been no concerts since the New England Youth Ensemble at the beginning of August - but in another, not at all: we have been working on two major projects about which this letter brings preliminary information. One is a festival to surround the total eclipse of the sun on Wednesday 4 December. I need hardly say that there are major problems in promoting music in Zimbabwe at the moment which is why less than seven weeks away we are still unable to bring full details of what we propose. If all goes according to plan the line-up will include the Leonore Piano Trio from the United States, singers and an actress from Britain, a tenor from South Africa and, of course, Zimbabwean musicians including Jeanette Micklem, Pat Pearce, Cabby Stirling, James Martin, the Marden Singers and the Bulawayo Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra. Some things are certain: the Festival will begin on Sunday 1 December with the BPO's performance of Messiah in St.John's Cathedral. We intend that there will then be both daytime and evening concerts through to the following Saturday 7 December including violin, cello and piano recitals, performances by the piano trio, a concert of Czech chamber music, concerts by the singers, "Meet the Performers", a sundowner on Eclipse Day and more. Just how much depends primarily on whether the Leonore Trio get here! - and that in turn depends on whether they receive a grant from the Fund for US Artists at International Festivals. The signs are promising but - certainty still lies two weeks ahead! However, we thought you should know NOW that we plan a full week of music centered on the eclipse and hope that you will clear your diaries in anticipation of all our plans coming to fruition! LONDON CONCERT Our second major project is now firmly in place and we hope that some of you can be there - although we realise not too many of you since this particular concert will take place in London!... A whole group of musicians who've been to Zimbabwe (plus the Maggini Quartet who hope to one day) will give a fund-raising concert for us in London. In the event it might even be two since Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson hope to give a separate concert at the Wigmore Hall at a later stage. Graham couldn't do the chosen date and he particularly wanted to be involved, partly because he was born right here in Bulawayo - and, indeed, his mother and brother still live in Park Road. Anyway, the definite concert will take place on Wednesday 30 April at 7.30 in St.John's Smith Square when the programme and performers are provisionally:
Of course, if we don't sell most of the tickets for this, we may make very little so we hope that everyone in Zimbabwe with English contacts will spread the word there to help with the audience - and perhaps some can even help us find sponsorship either of the concert itself and/or of a reception afterwards, advertising and programme advertisements. We hope to have full booking details etc. by the end of the year - but you could make a booking with Air Zim now of course!... Further details of both events will follow shortly - and in the meantime please pass on this news, especially of our eclipse plans. as widely as possible. Warm musical wishes! If you plant goodness, You will reap friends. SOAP (SAVE OUR OLD AGE PENSIONERS) THE BULAWAYO NOMADS MADE AN INCREDIBLE DONATION TO S.O.A.P. Gene therapy may stop cancer spread A new type of gene therapy has the potential to stop breast cancer cells spreading around the body, scientists claim. It is hoped that a technique developed by scientists from the charity Cancer Research UK and King's College London will enable women with breast cancer to be treated before surgery. Blocking the ability of cancer cells to follow instructions to move may be an effective way of preventing the disease from spreading Dr Tony Ng has discovered that Cancer cells are held in place within the tumour, increasing the chances of a successful operation to remove the malignant tissue. Scientists grew cancer cells in the laboratory and tracked their movement in response to signals encouraging them to spread. Team leader Dr Tony Ng said: "One of the most distinctive features of a cancer cell is its ability to respond to chemical signals and begin to move through the tissues surrounding it. "Blocking the ability of cancer cells to follow instructions to move may be an effective way of preventing the disease from spreading." Fellow researcher Dr Peter Parker, of the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute, said: "In the laboratory the new system has been extremely successful at preventing cancer cells from moving around. "We now need to find the best way of getting the virus into tumours, so women with breast cancer could benefit. "The treatment might be particularly useful around
the time of surgery to remove a tumour, since this is a time when cancer
cells may break away from a tumour and spread around the body."

Sorry about this guys - yes afraid so - another appeal! In these days of Hyper-inflation I hate to ask for anything from people but I also know we have junk and old clothes etc in our cupboards, either, because we have grown out of them or lost weight - whatever they just don't look right anymore. Sometimes we just don't like certain items of clothing and they have been sitting in the cupboard for years or children's clothes that your kids have grown out of. This is an appeal for old clothes, blankets and in fact any item that you would like to throw out. Cups, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils and pots would also be welcome. I did put out an appeal some time ago to which some people gave generously. The reason for the renewed appeal is that THEY are at it again. Numerous families have recently had their houses burnt to the ground and literally lost everything because they are perceived by war vets, militia etc to have voted for the opposition or are known to be opposition supporters. This is truly disgusting that innocent Zimbabweans have to lose everything they possess because they choose to support another party. Please be assured any items collected will only go to genuine victims and will be shared out as fairly as possible. Dr Inge Boye has offered her surgery as a
collection/drop off point - Veterinary Surgery, 125a J Tongogara Street

FLAT NEEDED MOST URGENTLY MY MOM IS DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR A FLAT IN BULAWAYO. REIKI STRESS and TENSION? Back, neck, shoulders, muscular pains, headaches, nervous stomachs, etc…? The therapies I offer can help. All the therapies are gentle and relaxing, non invasive and are performed through clothing. BOWEN therapy consists of gentle movements, over specific key points, which release blocked energy, allowing maximum healing to take place. Bowen therapy is characterized by 2 min pauses between movements, giving the body time to respond. REIKI is a very subtle, but powerful form of natural healing. It induces deep relaxation and relieves stress and tension. Reiki is not a religion or belief system, and anyone can do it, providing they have been Initiated by a Reiki Master. BOWEN/REIKI Combination is the ultimate in Relaxation treatments. REFLEXOLOGY is a form of healing in which the feet are gently stimulated to promote natural healing. For any of the above, or Combination treatments, make an appointment with; SUE BRIDGEFORD (Reiki Master) UPMARKET HARARE HOUSE TO LET I have a house in Borrowdale Brooke which will be available for renting from 1.02.02.
