The legendary Bulawayo B.A.C. Bar has burnt down !!
Bulawayo's Favourite Watering Hole - the Bulawayo Athletic Club Members Bar and Billiard
room burnt down last weekend in Bulawayo.
Residents living close to Bulawayo Athletic Club in 12th Avenue Bulawayo on Sunday night,
were horrified to see a bright glow emanating from the centre of the club buildings.
Although the fire was attended to by the Bulawayo fire Brigade, a large part of this historic
club was destroyed by the fire which was believed to have been started by an electrical
fault.
Over 100 years of Athletic events have taken place at this club, one of the very first sports
clubs in Bulawayo formed in 1894. The Club has for a century offered cricket, tennis,
bowls, squash and billiards and was a significant venue for many international sporting
events.
The cosy members bar was totally destroyed, as was the delightful snooker room with two
magnificent full size billiard tables, although the cocktail bar was saved, as was the
Walkden Hall, the squash courts, the changing rooms and the familiar veranda from
whence countless friendly and not so friendly cricket matches have been supported for
over one hundred years !!
Sadly an enormous amount of stock from the bar was destroyed in the blaze and the
sound of bottles exploding could be heard from afar.
Now this is crisis material with many loyal BAC regulars who will be most unhappy not to
be able to prop themselves up in their favourite corner, and order copious quantities of
Castle Pilsener from Neville the worlds best barman for the past 37 years !!
BAC Chairman - Trevor Williams and the committee have resolved to do their best to get
the club up and running again as soon as possible, in spite of the awful economic climate
in Zimbabwe.
The club is hoping to start a small web site for BAC in the hope that ex BAC stalwarts
worldwide might dig deep to help rebuild this historic portion of Bulawayo's sporting
history.
enquiries e mail Peter (Salty) Ward:- prward@netconnect.co.zw

MOUNTAIN BARBIES
The Bulawayo Mountain Barbies are Monica Midlane Frances Randall Carole Davies &
Michelle Keefe.
We continue the story ----
Off to the Matopos .... a gaggle of sun-screened, chatting, hatted and happy Steel Matopas
Magnolias! The routes are varied and the weather gorgeous and as Martin Sanderson does
with his Grade 6's on Camp, it becomes a rule that at the top of every "gomo" there is at
least a minute of absolute quietness - the silence is deafening and we are humbled in such
majesty. The sad reality is that it has taken us climbing a mountain in another country to
appreciate and explore what is right on our doorstep and with every single hike and climb,
we have sat at the top in awe. Mesmerised, stunned and moved at the same time. There
have been times where there have even been a few tears as we sit and quietly contemplate
the future of our beloved country and appreciate what we do have as opposed to winging
about what we don't have. Even the most agnostic person cannot deny that in this special
place - one is closer to God.
The picnic at the top of the Gomo varies - freshly baked crunchies from the farmers wife,
dried fruit and pumpkin seeds from the health fanatic, salami, dry wors and biltong from
the Atkins Advocate, the packet of lobels biscuits from the Mom in a Rush, and rich
creamy carrot cake from the Domestic Goddess who makes Nigella squirm! The next
challenge as part of the "training" was the Trans Matopas, organised by Des and Gavin
Stephens - The Gomo Gurus of Matopas.
Up and down huge dwalas with views that took oiur breath away and through shaded and
dappled woods and forests that many do not even know exist. Gavins knowledge of the
Matopas is incredible and we listened like awe-struck school children as he patiently
explained plants, rock formations, ancient river paths and San and Bantu folklore. Lunch
on the second day was spent with the other teams in a fantastic cave. Their eyes bulged
as we set up our "picnic" lunch, the food continually bursting forth out of our back packs.
Of course we shared our feast, our maternal conscience not comfortable as they sat with
their humble sandwich! The cave became a spa as we freshened up with our wet-wipes,
brushed and redid our hair, reapplied sun-block and lip ice, trimmed and filed a pesky
toenail, changed out of shorts that had unfortunately split causing great hilarity, and we
generally just felt like girls again!
It was an unforgettable weekend in a magical place like nowhere else in the world and we
all agreed that we would do it again in a heartbeat! As excited as we are about climbing
Kilimanjaro in less than a month, it was a unanimous vote that the Trans Matopas is a
unique experience in itself and a truly memorable part of our "training!".
Part 3 to follow next week.
++++++++++++ +++++++++ ++
2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH
I thought people should be aware of what seems to be occurring with these water cuts.
When the water comes back into the pipes, a lot of air comes through with with the water
upon the initial opening of a tap.
Apparently the water meter WHIZZES round then, and of course, it looks like we are using
far more than our allocation of water,
and being charged for it. One of these days, we'll be cut off and it won't be our fault !!
I spoke to a friend who's husband is in the water engineering, pump supply business, and
she advised that if you turn each
tap on SLOWLY when you need it, not so much air comes through, and then hopefully, the
meter won't go round so fast!
Have other people had this experience? What are your thoughts?
I hope someone in the City Council reads this, but can they fix the problem????
Best regards
Carol Warren

VALENTINE MUGATSA IS A MOST TALENTED ARTIST AND THE NATIONAL GALLERY WILL BE
HOLDING AN EXHIBITION OF HIS WORK AT THE GALLERY COMMENCING 30 AUGUST 2007.
I AM THE PROUD OWNER OF AN ORIGINAL "VALENTINE MUGATSA" MYSELF AND I HOPE YOU
WILL TRY AND GET TO THIS EXHIBITION ... DON;T MISS THIS ONE
M.K.
" For most of us, life is a continuous struggle. Day in day out we toil and spin just to
make ends meet. All that remains are strings of hope; we continue to hope against hope.
Maybe there is brilliance ahead of us...
In this exhibition, I have tried to highlight some of the activities that people do in
their daily lives. I have also tried to comment on various aspects of the society; how people
effect or are affected by the conditions they find themselves in. The depiction of the road
in most of my paintings is symbolic of all the ups and downs that we face in our daily
struggles.
This exhibition aims to encourage people to continue working very hard and help
each other re-string the broken strings of hope. "

Last Friday we had the absolute pleasure of coming in from the farm to watch our little
granddaughter perform in the 50th presentation of Curtain Call.
We were so blown away by the whole thing and want to thank and congratulate all those
involved in getting the programme off the ground, and to the dancers who enthralled us
with their efforts, and for bringing down those three amazing dancers from Harare. The
talent available in our beloved city, across the board is something to be proud of.
With all the negatives around it was a breath of fresh air to spend two hours or so without,
once thinking of the madness around us.
Well done to the folk of Bulawayo, you are amazing and unique, I like to think that the rest
of the country must envy us sometimes. The battles might seem insurmountable, but with
luck and lots of faith and huge doses of Bulawayo heart, things will come right.
Charlie and Val Ross.

I have discovered your site recently and spend some time on it. I am flabbergasted in how
you get all this accomplished.
I used to live in Paddonhurst, 5 Hellet Rd
My father Nicholas Katsambas worked for the RR and was known as Nick the Greek, he was
good friend with Frank Noble, Insurance Agent whom I believe was retiring in Spain.
Somehow across your site I came across a Frank who wants his kilts returned, Uncle Frank
as I called him played the bagpipes really good. Is this the same person, if so my dad
would be thrilled to hear from him. Alas, my mother Anastasia Katsambas has passed
away but if anyone remembers the Greeks, Katsambas Family I would love to hear from
them.

13) TIDBITS
Tidbits
Of late I have read many poems, comments, querying thoughts put on paper with regard
to what is happening to our country and its people. Surely we already have the answers to
all these questions if we look to our Father in Heaven. His Word is an infinite source of
information. May I humbly share what I believe is the problem with our beautiful world and
the land we love so much.
In Deuteromony 11 v 1 the Lord has said. " Love the Lord your god and keep his
requirements, His decrees, His laws and commands ALWAYS."
v13 reads. "So if you faithfully OBEY the commands I am giving you today-to love the
Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul-then I will send
rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains , so that you may gather in
your grain, new wine and oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will
eat and be satisfied."
V 16 continues "Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and
bow down to them."
V 26 says. "See I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse----- the blessing
if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; the curse if
you disobey the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command
you today by following other gods, which you have not known.
When each of us takes a few serious moments to contemplate the true position of our own
lives in relation to the Word of God, it is not difficult to see for ourselves the areas we fall
short of the commands of God. Rom 3 v 23.
Those who want to study further, look at Chap 28. The curses are upon the unbeliever, the
non compliant disobedient. These we do not judge but encourage them to turn in
obedience to God.
May serious Christians take time to pray for the people of this country. Without God this
country will never prosper. Without prayer the Lord will not bring to pass the prophesies
that he has spoken to prosper Zimbabwe and its people. SALVATION in every way.
For those who think that the Lord Almighty is NOT your God to obey, may you be
enlightened to understand that, with the advent of all the natural disasters spoken about
by Jesus in Mathew in Ch 24, at present escalating in frequency, there is little time to
procrastinate. Now is the time for our people to turn and be healed. 2 Cor 6 v 2.
The Lord Bless you.
V.C.D.

Highest Denomination
The world's highest denomination note is Hungary 100 Million B-Pengo *, issued in 1946.
That's 100,000,000, 000,000,000, 000 Pengo. It was worth about U.S. $0.20 in 1946.
Hungary also printed a 1 Milliard B-Pengo *(1,000,000, 000,000,000, 000,000 Pengo) note
in 1946. Overtaken by inflation, it was never issued.
* The European number system differs from the American system for denominations above
one million:
European 1 milliard = American 1 billion (1,000,000,000) , and
European 1 billion = American 1 trillion (1,000,000,000, 000).
Thus a B-Pengo or 1 Billion Pengo is really American 1 Trillion Pengo.
Lowest Denomination
The lowest fractional note is Fiji 1 penny, issued in 1942. The old penny, being 1/240 of a
pound, is a lower denomination than other fractional notes based on 1/100th of a basic
monetary unit.
No Denomination
The notes with no denomination - Tatarstan issued a series of currency checks without
any denomination printed.
Most Zeros
The note with the most zeros is a Yugoslavia 500,000,000, 000 Dinara, issued in 1993
with 11 zeros.
