Did you register to vote, or did you check your name and details on the voter's roll? Have you turned 18 and registered? IF NOT, YOU CANNOT VOTE IN 2008!! Please, friends, make the effort to check your details, to register and to make sure that all your family, your workers, your friends and neighbours are REGISTERED TO VOTE in 2008. The 2008 election is critical. We can have a real, democratically elected government IF WE ALL VOTE. But we will not all be able to vote IF WE DO NOT REGISTER!! While the rules may change as a result of the Mbeki-led negotiations and other initiatives, this is not guaranteed. We may go into the next election under the present election rules. We could still WIN those elections if we are all registered and exercise our right to vote. But we will certainly NOT WIN if we are not able to vote. In the business world poor, low quality service soon gets punished and one can easily be sued for breech of contract. Surely there has to be accountability on the part of Zesa too? What's the possibility of 1. Companies claiming for loss of profits/ turnover 2. pro - rata the fixed charge according to how many hours in the month one actually had electricity. ..? With all the power cuts and each time switching gear is put back on line again under load there is very real possibility of the switch gear burning - soon there will be no switch gear left because if Zesa can't pay it's current bills it is unlikely they can replace imported switching gear too easily. The national exercise is expected to run until August 18, starting from 7am to 5pm in both rural and urban areas. Registrar-General Mr Tobaiwa Mudede told a Press conference in Harare yesterday that all persons aged 18 and above or those who have moved to other constituencies would be able to register as voters in their respective areas. Mr Mudede said details of the exercise would be published soon in the media and could also be accessed at the relevant district registration offices. "We are ready to conduct our countrywide mobile registration, which we conduct every year. "We will commence on June 18 until mid-August," he said. He said officers would be trained on Saturday and deployment would commence on Sunday. "The officers would be issuing birth certificates, identity documents as well as voter registration, inspection of the voters' roll, citizenship registration and restoration for those who lost it by default," he said. Every district, he said, would have at least three teams deployed to ensure accessibility by all. Those intending to register as voters are advised to take to the registration centres either a national registration card or a legible national registration waiting pass with a picture of the holder on it or a valid Zimbabwe passport. Mr Mudede said prospective voters are also expected to provide documentary evidence such as a birth certificate if they lost their passports or national identification cards. Those without birth certificates should bring two witnesses so that they can be issued with identification particulars. Driver's licences will not be accepted for voter registration. Those who were made "stateless" by the Citizenship Amendment Act Number 12 of 2003 after they failed to regularise their citizenship status and wishing to restore it, are required to bring their original birth certificates, original identity cards or a passport and, if married, their original marriage certificates. "The requirements would be followed and we appeal to the public to bring the relevant documents to our centres," he said. He urged voters to visit inspection centres to verify if their personal details were recorded correctly and cause corrections to be made where necessary. bazaar Mr Mudede also said metal identification cards were still valid and the public should not congest centres to acquire the new polythene identification cards. ++++ A friend of mine (Garden Park Pensioner) has for sale a number of interesting items in the dressmaking line - Machine bobbins and needles, scissors, imported buttons, laces and ribbons, sequins, buckles, etc - If anyone is interested, please phone her (June) on 230563 or me on 235235 for more info. +++++++ I AM CURRENTLY SEARCHING FOR A MATCHING DONOR FOR MY SON BUT ITS VERY COSTLY, & IT CAN ONLY BE DONE IN CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA, THE SPECIMEN IS TO BE (O POSITIVE) BUT THE PROBLEMS I AM FACING IS THE SAMPLE CAN ONLY BE TAKEN FROM HARARE, COST $9MILLION /PERSON THEN TO BE FLOWN TO CAPE TOWN AS SOON AS DONE COST ANOTHER R600/PERSON. As many receiving this will already know, we plan to create an audio-visual centre in memory of Derek Hudson at the Academy and we hope to open the first stage at the same time as we unveil a bust by Gill Kaufman that will keep Robert Sibson company in the foyer. Provisionally this is set for mid-October. I realise that now is hardly the best time to start fund-raising but there again when will be a good time?! We have decided at the Academy that we want to make an effort now, partly because we already have some sterling in donations and money that we have raised, partly because it's already eighteen months since Derek died and we would like to have something in place while his memory is still fresh. In brief we have a three-stage plan which is: · Stage 1: to convert the common room next to the library into an audio-visual room with facilities both for individual study and listening and small groups of up to 12-15 for talks, lessons, DVDs, etc. This will also involve the provision of proper black-out facilities and security - and we would also very much like to repaint the room! · Stage 2: to acquire a DVD projector and screen so that DVDs can be shown to larger groups in Room 25. Again black-out facilities will be required. · Stage 3: to make it possible to show DVDs in the Sibson Hall to a larger audience which would require another, larger screen and a projection point for the DVD player. We would also like to acquire a "snake" which would mean that any concerts requiring amplification, electronic instruments etc. could be plugged in directly to power in the control room. Taken together these plans will cost a good deal of money and not all of this will be possible in the short term but we hope that the first two stages can be achieved for no more than £2000 plus a certain amount of local currency (it's impossible to put a figure on the latter as it will change every day!) and our aim is to complete them by the end of this year. The Academy has considerable resources in the shape of a very well-stocked library which we plan to make much more accessible. We have been given several hundred audio tapes by Maureen Stewart as well as CDs by Maureen again and Avril Pinchen (sister of Keith whom some will remember), and we have received an anonymous donation of a small CD player. We already have video recorders and televisions but the latter are small and we don't have any other CD players and no DVD players at all. So the priorities are more CD players, a DVD player, a DVD projector and a large television. (It should be noted that the DVD operas shown in the last six months have been on borrowed projectors and we're very grateful to Rick Kriel and Fr.Nigel Johnson for making them available- but it's now time we tried to be self-sufficient! ) All of these items will be invaluable to the Academy - and to PAB as well. and I'm sure that the Principal of the Academy and the Chairman of PAB will be able to come to a mutually satisfactory arrangement about access to this equipment! A DVD projector would mean that we can show operas, concerts, musical films and more on a much more regular basis. So, in addition to paying tribute to the memory of someone who served Bulawayo's music so well for thirty years, there is a degree of self-interest involved! The Academy is now actively seeking support. It currently has about £500 earmarked for this project and we are appealing to all those who at any stage have had connections with the Academy for donations. And we are also asking all those who enjoy music in the Academy's hall to support us and - equally important! - to spread the word to all those who attended BPO concerts under Derek's baton as well as the many other events he organised. In recognition of this and of many years' co-operation with the BPO and the Academy, I hope that Performing Arts will be able to make a significant contribution to this appeal. Donations in either Zimbabwe dollars or foreign currency will be more than welcome: for the former cheques should be payable to the Zimbabwe Academy of Music and full details of what to do with foreign currency donations are available from either me or the Academy office. The Academy intends to have a separate donor's board commemorating this appeal, probably in Room 25.
