POWER CUT BLUES

I know there are probably more people in the world without power, than those who have 
the luxury of power, but I suppose it all "boils" down to what you are used to.

Young people can see in the dark, cats can see in the dark, but Wannabe Twenty One Year 
Olds have problems when it comes to seeing in the dark !!

HeeHoo is a wonderful provider and has made sure life is not too difficult by providing a 
generator and an inverter, so I am not really complaining I promise you.....

However there are certain downsides to all these gadgets and gizmos.... Our generator has 
a switch to turn it on, but my friend Lynn dislocates her shoulder every time there is a 
power cut as she has the pull- start variety !!

And of course with diesel running at ZW$60,000.00 a litre, one has to be slightly 
circumspect as to how long one can afford to run the generator at any rate.

The worst thing one can do is to nod off during a power cut, cos the minute the power 
comes back every light in the house comes full on and wakes you up with the fright of a 
lifetime. 

And to nod off when you haven't gone through the generator turning off rigamarole, is 
even worse. HeeHoo spent a chilly half hour last night during a particularly long power cut 
when the gate would not open, the phones were not ringing, SheHoo was fast asleep and 
her cell phone was attached to the inverted, but the inverter had gone dead as the power 
had been cut for such a long time... et-cetera etcetera etcetera !

Being Friday night he was in no condition to climb over the gate, and who could be 
absolutely certain that the electric fence would not come alive in the midst of this delicate 
manoeuvre!!!

Applying one's mascara is one delicate task I have not managed to master in the dark. By 
torch light the shadows flummox one totally and sometimes result in black smears on the 
nose.... 

Eyeliner is even more troublesome, even if one has lived with one's eyes for over half a 
century, for some bizarre reason it is still difficult to find one's lids in the dark !!

However help is at hand with the daily morning hairdo I gather, as some ingenious soul 
has invented a hairdryer that can be plugged into the lighter in the car. !! Oooh, that could 
cause a lot or irksome situations in early morning rush hour traffic I would imagine !!

Dressing in the dark makes colour co-ordination impossible, rule of thumb, never ever 
buy the same shoes in different colours or you could the subject of much mirth at the 
theatre !!

Second rule of thumb, always make sure the generator is full of diesel, as pouring diesel 
into the tiny opening in the dark is well nigh impossible. Our generator must have been 
designed by a man I am sure or the fuel aperture would be considerably larger....

Of course the very worst thing about the power cuts is those "friends" who proclaim loudly 
"Oh I never have power cuts ".... This is tantamount to immediate and total social 
ostracisation .... and could result in serious bodily injury if it continues... .

Oh well, the lights have gone out yet again, the fifth time this week, I have more bruises 
on my shins than shins these days...and the strange thing is that my electricity bill just 
keeps getting higher and higher ! "Load shedding" they call it , I ask you with tears in my 
eyes !! 

Buts that's not all, we are getting "water shedding" as from tomorrow they tell me, that will 
be loads and loads of fun....

BULAWAYO CITY COUNCIL YESTERDAY DE=COMMISSIONED THE SECOND OF THE CITY'S 
DAMS - UMZIMNGWANE DAM. THIS WILL SEE THE INTRODUCTION OF EIGHT HOUR WATER 
CUTS IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS, EASTERN AND SOUTHERN SUBURBS WILL GO WITHOUT 
WATER FOR EIGHT HOURS ON SCHEDULED DAYS, WHILE WESTERN SUBURBS WILL GO 
WITHOUT WATER FOR UP TO FOUR HOURS DAILY.

LOWER NCEMA IS EXPECTED TO BE DE-COMMISSIONED IN AUGUST AND INYANKUNI IN 
OCTOBER. INZISA IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE WATER UNTIL THE NEXT RAINY SEASON, BUT 
THE CAPACITY IS CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF THE CITY.

PAB presents a DVD of Puccini's "Turandot" at the Bulawayo Club on Friday 15 June at 6.00 
p.m.

"Turandot" was Puccini's last opera and is, of course, the home of "Nessun dorma". It 
contains a lot more glorious music in Puccini's typical style as well as something very 
different in the exotic Chinese influences and this is a truly spectacular production from 
the Met in New York directed by Franco Zeffirelli with Eva Marton as Turandot and Placido 
Domingo as Calaf.

The lounge bar will be open from 5.15 and the opera begins at 6.00. Dinner will be 
between Acts II and III and will be a full three-course meal. The cost is $300 000 per head 
including snacks beforehand and coffee afterwards. There will be a cash bar and the usual 
signing facilities for members.

Ticket-programmes with cast list and full synopsis of the story are on sale at the Club and 
the Academy. Club members may sign for the whole evening on the night but bookings 
should be confirmed by 1.00 P.M. on Thursday 14 June - either book at the Club or send

YOUTH IN CONCERT DVD

As many of you may remember, the Youth Concert back in March was filmed and it is now 
available on DVD. The rough edit was showing in the foyer at a subsequent concert and 
aroused a good deal of interest. The disc is now available and is a high quality production 
with a full colour jacket, etc. (I decided not to send it with this to keep the size down!) 
Copies are available from the Academy office at a special price of $200 000 until the end 
of the week ... less than £2.00 in real money! (I know we don't earn real money but things 
like this involve imported components and the price really is very reasonable!)

TURANDOT

A DVD of Puccini's Turandot will be shown at the Bulawayo Club on FRIDAY 15 JUNE 
beginning at 6.00 P.M. The lounge bar will be open from 5.15. Dinner will be a full three-
course meal consisting of soup, sweet and sour pork (we thought it appropriate for an

WE HAVE BEEN CENSORED !! And I Don't Like It!

The play The Good President will be showing at the Bulawayo Theatre from the 13th to the 
16th of June. On Wednesday to Friday 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm whilst on Saturday the play 
will be showing at 2: 00 pm, 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm. It is 50min long and is followed with a 
discussion. The writer Cont Mhlanga is the moderator and takes questions from the 
audience about the play as well.

The team has been going through a process of marketing the play, but we have been 
censored at the state controlled media and I don't like it!

Earlier, this week, we intended to place an advertisement in the Chronicle, Sunday News 
and Umthunywa in Bulawayo, all brands of Zimpapers. Our advert was refused unless I 
agreed that it be censored. The same advert ran uncensored in the private media because 
there was nothing worth censoring in the first place. Removed where the seven dialogue 
lines extracted from the script. And I don't like it!

I welcome to be edited, but I don't want to be censored, especially on some funny 
grounds that the policy of the public media in Zimbabwe is to protect the President. Yes 
the advert was censored on grounds that they are PROTECTING THE PRESIDENT. And I 
don't like It.

On one hand I respect the right of the media house to censor advert content, but I how 
ever don't like the reason given for doing that. Yes I don't like it!

How are my seven lines in my script harmful to the President? Does this qualify my 
conclusion then that the President does not know what the majority of us are saying about 
the current situation we are in because some one is protecting him to hear and listed to 
what we have to say? When he speaks down to us, the same papers don't protect us to 
listen to what he has to say? When we speak back to him through the same paper it 
protects him to listen to us. I don't like It!

Could this be the reason why 27 years after independence the country has no private daily 
papers, no private radio channels, no private TV channels? To protect the President from 
listening to us! I don't like It! 

How does a public listed company in the stock exchange become a state controlled 
company whose policy is not to protect national interests but just to protect the President? 
I don't like It.

Those who lived during the days of the Rhodesian Front will be instantly reminded of the 
days when there was heavy censorship of any news to do with the war. The editors ended 
up leaving the spaces blank to show that their stories had been censored. It is ironical that 
the same people who fought against such practices are perpetrating the same offences. I 
don't like It!

Theatre is a means of expressing people's opinions about government policies and it is 
surely very strange to be censored for expressing one's opinions whilst the constitution is 
always for freedom of expression. The right to freedom of expression can only be taken 
away if it infringes on other people's rights. I would like to maintain that telling the head 
of State, how one feels about governance issues can never be infringing on his rights. All 
things being equal a President is elected by the people hence he should be accountable to 
the people. If a President is afraid of people's opinions, to the point that he has to be 
protected by the public media and even by making sure that there is no private electronic 
media in the country that one leads, then either the people censoring on behalf of the 
President have a problem or the President has a problem and for me when my country of 
birth is run by people who have problems then I don't like It!

How are public opinions supposed to get to the President if the public media censors the 
people. Where will the public sphere take place? Where will we Zimbabweans talk?


The Government has spun a great web of fear, very worrying as national elections are 
around the corner. As we have been distributing flyers all over the city of Bulawayo, the 
top question that came from the public was, if we come and watched the play, will we not 
be beaten by the police in the auditorium? In one hotel at the city centre we got several 
calls from the staff the following day that we should come and remove our flyers as state 
security agents where asking too many questions or else they would get beaten up. This 
degree of public fear is not good for any government record in the world.

The Government has presented itself to the people as being capable of great state violence 
if people express their opinions over governance issues.

I Don't Like It!!

If you are in Bulawayo don't be afraid. Come and watch the play. If you are far from 
Bulawayo please inform some one you know, about The Good President. Tickets are only Z

On a recent visit to the MOTH shrine in the Matopos, I noticed with regret that this sacred 
place was in a shockingly neglected condition, and that the ashes of the ex-servicemen 
were spilling onto the ground. Perhaps something has been done since my visit, but if not, 
the MOTH organisation, or the relatives of those remembered there, should try to ensure 
that the grounds are tidied up and the ashes of their loved ones are allowed to rest with 
dignity.

If your metal window frames are warped, bent, or the hinges are hinges seized, and your 
windows don't close properly, you can contact Monarch Steel, who have a window service 
team! They will come to your house armed with appropriate tools, and in no time at all will 
have your windows closing again. Their charges are reasonable almost to the point of 
disbelief, they work with minimum disruption, and they got all the windows in our house 
closing properly within the space of two hours. Prior to this, some of our windows had 
gaps of up to 2" between the window and the frame. I can absolutely recommend them!
