I suppose there is never an ideal time for a power cut. It doesn't matter what time of day or night it is a darn nuisance. Sometimes more s than others obviously but one must try and see the funny side of it all or one might just find a length of flex and contemplate all sorts of bad thoughts. Perhaps the worst time for a power cut is when one is happily ensconced in the bath with a good book but without a candle and a box of matches. Perhaps the second worst time is when there is a quiche in the oven for the "Drinking Club with the Bridge Problem Girls." Then of course there is the power cut that occurs when one is heading for ones favourite hair stylist/dentist/podiatrist (for an appointment that one has waited for for three months) and the electric gate will not open !! The Ex-Farmers Wives undoubtedly have the edge over the townies in the power cut stakes, because they grew up with tilly lamps and generators and I am sure the Farmers Wives who now live in town, must chortle at the sight of some of us during this particularly baneful aspect of life in the Third World. Picture Yours Truly when the lights go out. Totally night blind, stumbling for the torch, shins bleeding, knee bruised, I eventually get hold of and light a candle, and head for the garage where the generator lives in tandem with the doggies. It aint easy manoeuvring the dogs beds, the bikes the dogs water bowl and the dogs dinner without mishap. It takes Seven steps to turn on this blessed nosy air pollution machine, and all seven steps are carefully annotated but not easy to ready by candlelight. Picture the delight when on step number seven the diesel engine splutters into life and then picture the panic when it runs out of diesel seven seconds after touchdown !! Now the diesel lives in the shed at the bottom of the garden, and so a sortie must be made, via candlelight to find the torch which is always mysteriously missing. Diesel secured after thirty minutes of fumbling, shoes drenched in fuel, woolies reeking (diesel has a horrid habit of impermeating everything within a hundred miles, and hey presto we have lights just in time for the power to come back on again !! Now power cuts are irritating to say the least but what about those folk who actually have to make a living ? I think here of my dear friend Colin who has to teach "Corel-draw by Candlelight" my friend Maureen who teaches "Maths by Matches" Spare a thought for the lovely lasses at Platinum who have to undertake "Platinum by Paraffin " !! Think of those stalwart folk in Chimanimani who run sawmills - absolutely no way on Gods earth to run a sawmill without Getsi !! Industrialists, Colleges, Schools and businesses are all taking incredible strain. Our electrical appliances are going down the tube literally with the power surges, on and off (more off than on !!) Businesses have no orders as their switchboards cannot operate, technologically advanced businesses are totally hamstrung as the internet servers are not working for the best part of the day. The CBD seems to be particularly hard hit and there is chaos in town daily as the traffic lights do not work, banks have no power so folk got no money !! Supermarket managers have taken to taking their costly produce home with them as freezer failure is resulting in hideous financial losses, and it takes a brave shopper to buy produce that might possibly have frozen and thawed several times in the space of a week !! Me !! I stick to tinned and fresh food these days, tummies have been behaving badly all over town, and those sausages in the freezer look pretty suspect if you ask me !! ++++ NOTICES Christian Motivational Speaker available by appointment only to address your functions and meetings for associations, clubs, business organisations, and churches. Hatchings was chosen by Professor Anthony Chennells in the Times Literary Supplement as his choice of the most significant book to have come out of Africa. .eneath the scurrility, this is a profoundly romantic novel. It tells of a touching love story between a young white couple who are saved from the prevailing Philistinism and corruption by two things ? a love of English literature and a love of the Matopos.?Terence Ranger in The Zimbabwean Review ++++++ APPEAL TO SAVE OUR COELACANTH Did you know that Bulawayo has its very own Coelacanth at the Natural History Museum ? Do you know what a Coelacanth is? It is a prehistoric fish once thought to have been extinct for millions of years, until in 1938 a live specimen was caught near East London in South Africa. The Coelacanth currently in our museum came from the Comoros in 1978. This fish has been described as a 'living fossil' and is very rare; most Museums around the world only having plaster casts or fibreglass models. We have the real deal: a preserved Coelacanth literally in the flesh! Unfortunately the original tank it was displayed in was damaged and for the last 15 years or so our precious specimen has been tucked away in the basement. The temporary tank in which the Coelacanth is presently housed is rusting and it is possible that should nothing be done that the Coelacanth itself may deteriorate. Our museum is fortunate to have qualified and capable staff. It also has a suitable display tank to re-home the Coelacanth. However to successfully preserve and display this fish approximately 400 litres of Isopropyl Alcohol is required. The cost of this is around $400 million dollars. Whilst one could argue that this isn't our problem ?surely some of our tax dollars could be used ? ?we all know the reality is sadly different. National Museums and Monuments are underfunded and if we don't save OUR Coelacanth, nobody else will. I am appealing to the public: please help to put our Coelacanth back on display. If you can help please contact Lara Knight at servair@mweb.co.zw or telephone 241151. A little from many will go a long way. +++++++ Available in Bulawayo from the National Gallery, Induna Arts, New Dimensions or email amabooks@gatorzw.co.uk ++++++++ Charlie Trollope Trust Fund. As you are aware Charlie's recovery process is going to be a very long and slow one. He is currently in the UCT Private Hospital Neurological Rehab Unit in Cape Town . The family are confident with the care he is getting there and would obviously like to keep him there for as long as necessary, given that he is in need of constant high care and is not in a position to be moved. His Medical aid provider is currently taking care of most of the bills but there is a limit to this. In order that we can try and limit any further stress on Theresa and the family, we have established a Trust Fund at Slabbert, Venter, Yanoutsos Incorporated which will be administered jointly by (Anton Slabbert who is the senior partner and Graham George). The Trust Fund will only be used to cover the expenses that will be incurred in assisting the Trollope family through the difficult times ahead. Such expenses would include, but not be limited to, all forms of medical cover, rehabilitation, travel costs, living expenses and the like. All donations may be paid to the following account:- Standard Bank Fish Hoek Branch Sort code 03-60-09 Account number 072 128 542 Beneficiary - Slabbert, Venter, Yanoutsos Inc - Trust Account Noted under reference - Charles Trollope. All deposits must be accompanied by an email which is to be sent to the attorneys at anton@svy.co.za or fax number 27-21-762 5802 and copied to Graham on gsgeo@iafrica.com or fax 27-21-7010184 stating the following:- Quote I ........... confirm having deposited the sum of R......... into your Trust account for value date ......... and authorise that the funds only be released for the specific benefit of Mr Charles Trollope and family to cover medical and related expenses during his recovery as duly instructed by Graham George. Unquote In the event that the funds are not required by Charlie or the family, any monies that remain will be refunded to all donors prorate to their contribution. Needless to say you will have full access to information as to how the funds are used. Whatever contribution you make will be greatly appreciated and we can assure you that it will be a huge relief to Theresa knowing that she does not have to worry about the financial aspect of this tragedy and that she can focus her efforts on Charlie's rehab and recovery. Our sincere thanks in advance for your kind contribution Brendan Beaumont and Graham George +++++ MOMS, do your children know HOW to study? studi-tec millennium provides a comprehensive "how to study" programme to address the areas your child(ren) struggles with when it comes to tests, and that time dreaded time of year - exams! Our children are constantly reminded to study more and more, and, to apply themselves more fully. But the real problem is, do they know how to study? Generally, they are given a few organisational tips, and most are unaware study techniques can make a significant difference in terms of time, understanding, memory and retention, effective preparation etc Most pupils are familiar with repetitious parrot-type learning, or reading through huge volumes of work in the hope of remembering it, and, as a result, are often bored and demotivated with such inefficient methods. The five most common problems pupils struggle with are: 1. de-motivation 2. huge volumes of work 3. inefficient reading skills to cope with large volumes of work 4. Parrot-type learning with insufficient insight and understanding 5. Under-achievement in relation to ability. studi-tec millennium seeks to address these areas offering a comprehensive, practical programme covering more than ten skills crucial for revision and examinations. Skills and techniques are covered in: - Maths: effective recording of maths model examples, terms and errors. - Monitoring: self-assessment, goal-setting, progress, re- establishing aims, feedback. - Reading: scanning, skimming, comprehensive, critical - Listening: differentiating, understanding, identifying main ideas and key words - Textbook: identifying essentials, main ideas, keywords and problem areas - Note-making: comprehensive format aiding understanding, problem areas and revision - Formulating: structuring facts for essays and special assignments - Research: familiarisation with library systems - Memorisation: mnemonics and memory aids to help long-term memory, the role of music - Examinations: preparation, technique, hints, attitude, language - Motivation: thought patterns, attitude, self-worth and self- esteem, positive affirmation, relaxation techniques Our aim is to equip pupils with effective skills to help them become the independent, achieving learners they need to be. Whether your child is under-achieving or already attaining high marks but needs to better them yet for vocational choices, studi-tec will assist your child to be more effective in his/her revision, cutting down on study time and more importantly, to face exams prepared and with confidence. This well-researched, educationally sound "how to study" programme will equip your children for the demands and pressures to succeed in school life. The course is practical, realistic and easy to apply with the tutor having very much a hands-on approach, showing step by step the process of successful studying, how to study in a way that provides hope, "works" and is effective. Our children are invaluable and high school performance determines choice of vocation and requires healthy self-esteem to face the challenges of adult life. The course is open to pupils from Grade 7 upwards, although Form 3's are targeted. It is NOT too late for pupils already in their "O" level year and these techniques can and are used in tertiary education. COURSE INFO: Two courses will be held in Harare, one the last week of term and the second, immediately after the long weekend. In Bulawayo, the course will be held the last week of the school holiday, from Tuesday - Saturday ie AUGUST 29 - SEPTEMBER 2 every morning from 9.OOam - 1.00pm. The programme consists of 16 hours tuition and a package of 60 pages, which is worked through, is included. Here was a man known to many, who had done so much good and now he was gone. Throughout the Drought Relief programme in 1992/93 he gave generously of his time, he supported the programme and made it possible for all to know how successful it was by sponsoring a time slot when the programme was closed down by the 'powers that be'. For as long as I can remember Ralph supported the children on Radio One's breakfast show when I was on air in the mornings. .Boxes of records came in to me weekly to give away to deserving children and if I ran out I only had to pick up the phone and Ralph would ensure more would be on the way. Ralph Glover was a wonderful, generous, caring person who always had a kind word for everyone. He came through adversity with a smile and was quick to laugh. TELEPHONE 252140 OR 091 357 926 ++++++ Peroxide I want to share this with you, which was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana: "I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little ol' bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don't tell you about peroxide, or they would lose thousands of dollars. 1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe or shower.) No more canker sores and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash. 2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. 3. Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. 4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. 5. I had fungus on my feet for years - until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. 6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine, but was healed by soaking in peroxide. 7. Put two capfuls into a douche to prevent yeast infections. I had chronic yeast infections until I tried this once or twice a week. 8. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. 9. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your nose into a tissue. 10. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly. 11. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it's not a drastic change. 12. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections. 13. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary 14. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors with, there is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this. 15. Gargle with hydrogen peroxide, put drops in the ear and nose to end colds, flu, chronic sinusitis (including polyps], and infections. 16. Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralise chemicals. 17. Disinfect your dishwasher or refrigerator. 18. Use it on trees and plants as a natural fungicide, insecticide, and as a weed killer. 19. Clean with hydrogen peroxide when your house becomes a biohazard after its invaded by toxic mould, such as those with water damage. Hydrogen Peroxide is described as an effective anti-viral, Antibacterial, and anti-fungal, and can be used for anthrax decontamination. This sort of supports the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide, don't you think? Also: your body makes hydrogen peroxide to fight infection which must be present for our immune system to function correctly. White blood cells are known as Leukocytes. A sub-class of Leukocytes called Neutrophils produce hydrogen peroxide as the first line of defence against toxins, parasites, bacteria, viruses and yeast. Simply put, it is the oxygenation of the body. Sickness and tumours are generally oxygen-hating growths which thrive oxygen-poor bodies. Throughout the world hydrogen peroxide is used instead of chlorine as a safer and eco-friendly municipal water purifier. Some use H2O2 in pools and spas. "Dr. Edward C. Rosenow, author of 450 published medical papers and associate at the Mayo Clinic for over 60 years . . . proved [more than] 70 years ago (1914) that bacteria could be found consistently in the lymph nodes that drain joints (J.A.M.A., April 11, 1914). He was probably the first scientist to postulate that H2O2 would help arthritis because of its ability to supply oxygen to oxygen-hating organisms causing arthritis (Streptococcus viridans)." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ TIDBITS Courtesy Passions in Poetry http://www.netpoets.com/ The Gift Of Friends by Karin Schaefer There are days when bubbling from us comes the innocent child within, who giggles at the little things and wears a silly grin. There are days when melancholy comes to visit for a while; the mind feels tired, the body weak; we have no strength to smile. There are days when joy abundant grabs a hold of you and me; wraps us up in all it's splendor, lifts us up and sets us free. There are days when sorrow wraps us in its cloak of grief and fear, 'till our hearts ache to the breaking, 'till our eyes can't shed a tear. There are days when love bestows us with its wonderment and light; with its beauty and its mystery, its power and its might. And there are days when life rewards us and seems to make amends by granting us a marvellous gift, the precious gift of Friends. copyright (c) Karin Schaefer This poem is sent courtesy of Passions in Poetry.
