And the 67th Annual Mining Conference held at the Elephant Hills Safari Lodge brought home to me just how special this country still is. Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and it is and always will be magical and breathtaking. The Victoria Falls village has had a major facelift. There are Tourist Police to look after the tourists and they do their job diligently and efficiently. The hotels are not crowded but Tourism seems to be on the increase again thank goodness. The shops are stocked with a delightful selection of good quality curios and Zimbabwean Objects d'art. There are bikes for hire, or beach buggies or trail bikes and go carts for the rough roads. The Elephant Hills Hotel is absolutely striking, the decor cleverly incorporates the essence and mystery of Africa and yet remains regal, cool and imposing. Instead of massed arrangements of flowers, which would have to be imported at great cost from other centres, the hotel uses beautiful soapstone carvings of hippo ponds with tastefully arranged bamboo shoots nestling in the water. How subtle and original and artful !! The service is impeccable, the waiters are friendly and attentive to one's smallest need and yet discreet and highly trained. The food was excellent. We had a full on sit down banquet the first night for the 120 delegates to the conference, served with acceptable local wines or imported wines at a price !! The next night we had a true African experience - the Bush Dinner, served under the stars surrounded by braziers to keep away the cold, with the tables beautifully laid and an excellent array of local and traditional dishes. Marimbas played and young ebony skinned maidens kept us entertained while we feasted from tables laden with macimbi, mazondo, braised sable, fried capenta and sadza and relish. Of course there was plenty of steak and chicken and salad too for the less adventurous tourist ! The logistics of serving over a hundred people under the stars and the brilliant full moon, in the magical African bush must be seen to be believed. A sundowner cruise on the might Zambesi River brought back all those memories of days gone by when life was lazy and less stressful. Elephant, hippo, crocodile and bush buck were apparent and the boat crew kept us entertained with gin slings and river anecdotes. A morning jog on the golf course was however the "piece de resistance" Bushbuck, duiker, waterbuck and warthog were everywhere, watching me with their deep onyx eyes, suspicious yet unafraid. Those minute mesh spider webs were everywhere glistening with silver dew, hopeful of an early morning ant snack. It made jogging difficult as one tried hard not to stand on the diamond patterns. Hornbills mewed like babies, vultures soared lazily in the thermals overhead as if trying to compete with the helicopters and microlites which forged backwards and forwards ferrying tourists eager to get an aerial view of the mighty Victoria Falls. Back in the sumptuous conference rooms, mining matters were discussed heatedly, but all this seemed very far removed from the real things in life at the Victoria Falls hamlet. Beauty, majesty, rivers and massive trees that all meet in harmony at the foot of one of the most amazing sights that Mother Nature has ever produced and it is all here to be found in Zimbabwe at the Victoria Falls. ++++++++ NOTICES BULAWAYO FLORAL GROUP - Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th June 2006 at 2.30pm in the Church of Ascension Hall. Telephone 217972 e-mail; hospice@gator.zw.com Dear Fellow Citizen This year we celebrate our Silver Anniversary; it has been 25 years since The Bulawayo Island Hospice Service opened its' doors to every citizen, whatever age, creed or ethnic background in this fine City of ours. Throughout these years we have watched our service grow to where we now have 3 full-time well qualified nurses and a back up team of caregivers, bereavement counsellors and administration staff assisting them. In April alone we cared for 56 patients and 14 of them were new referrals. It is a highly valued service which enables our relations, colleagues and friends, who are now so seriously ill that they would normally be in hospital, to be nursed at home surrounded by their families and all those things that we hold so precious in our lives. We give our patients dignity and, being Bulawayo, practically demonstrate our love and support for them when they truly need it the most. Suffice to say, with confidence, that there is not one member of our community who has not known at least one patient who has been helped by Hospice. Hospice is a free service and we kept afloat and even expanded in the first 20 years, but then the battle began to keep up the same high level of service. I don't need to spell out the drastic effects of inflation! It has been a crippling blow to us all but somehow we kept our cars fuelled (now increasingly decrepit so needing regular repairs), paid our staff and administration costs and supplied the drugs and dressings required. But in January this year we had eaten so heavily into our capital, despite cutting down our costs in every way, that we were faced with closure within 2 months. So we appealed to various companies for a monthly contribution towards the nurses salaries and, being Bulawayo, the response was immediate...many of these companies themselves facing hard times. Since that appeal our costs have again doubled and I am now appealing to all of you people out there who can afford a monthly contribution to step forward. We desperately need to know that our running costs will be covered each month, if Hospice is to continue to serve our people in the way to which we have all become accustomed. Further, each one of our volunteer committee members, is themselves already working a full day in another capacity, so we are looking for someone to take on the role of Administrator in the Hospice Office. This will be a salaried position and mornings only and we would prefer applicants to have a working knowledge of book-keeping combined with a dedication to our cause, particularly we hope in chasing up all those of you out there who really would like to help us keep alive but need a bit of a nudge! Please Bulawayo, you have never let us down! You may contact us as above and I also give my details. Thanks Mags, already a great supporter of Hospice, for your generous publication of this urgent appeal Yours in Hospice Jeannie Pritchard. Organised in association with Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo and The Art Grove Coffee Shop, the fair aims at bringing together artists, crafters and creative designers. This strategic partnership has resulted in a make-over of the previous art and craft fair, that has been a traditional feature in the calendar of the National Gallery in Bulawayo for many years. No doubt the Regional Director of the Gallery, Addelis Sibutha is very pleased, having stated, 'This fair is a wonderful blend of old and new art and craft exhibitors.' At least 75 artists and crafters are participating as exhibitors, the variety of which is as wide as Bulawayo's streets. The selection includes fine art, basketry, Ndebele beadwork, jewellery, home décor, linens, stone and metal sculptures, pottery and much more. Also included amongst the exhibitors is a home produce section, providing home made jams, pickles, samoosas, cakes, French pancakes, etc. Visitors to the fair will also be able to enjoy the ‘Living Art' exhibition of selected paintings and ceramics. 'This event will create a platform for artists to meet, market their pieces and network', said Sibutha. The two day fair will kick off with a Cocktail Evening on Friday 26th May at 6.00pm, featuring a live band performance by Bulawayo's Cassim band. Also included on Friday night, will be an official opening, after which buyers and collectors of art and craft will have opportunity to shop amidst a tranquil atmosphere. Tickets for the Cocktail Evening can be purchased in advance for $500,000 from Fiona Lapham at The Art Grove Coffee Shop, based at the National Gallery in Bulawayo. The second day, Saturday 27th May, will be a family day for the general public, where additional entertainment, including a puppet show, 'Casper and Gogo', by German born Ki Bhebhe and Story Time by Jane Morris of Amabooks, can be enjoyed by young and old. Tickets can be purchased at the door. $50,000 for adults and $20,000 for children under 12 years. Fiona Lapham, one of the directors of The Art Grove Coffee Shop, has contributed creatively to giving the fair a new look and new lease on life. 'My participation was mainly to help promote the artists and crafters and to encourage the community to visit the National Gallery and enjoy a new and innovative interpretation of an art and craft fair in the historic setting of the National Gallery,' said Lapham. Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo, who are responsible for promoting foreign and local culture, see their partnership in the organisation of the fair as an opportunity to promote artistic talent within Bulawayo and the region. One of the main objectives of the fair, according to Fabien Invernizzi, Director of Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo, is to resuscitate appreciation of art and craft in Bulawayo. 'The whole idea of the fair is to celebrate talent of every kind', said Invernizzi. 'There is no doubt that Bulawayo has a large number of talented people, who may not be aware of the immense opportunities to network and market their goods and the fair aims at doing that - bringing artists and crafters together.' 'In addition, the fair will give opportunity for the public to meet the artists and crafters at work,' said Sibutha, who is also the President of Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo. This event will definitely be a highlight on your social calendar, so be sure to support the artists and crafters by purchasing tickets early for the Friday night Cocktail Evening, 26th May and take the family to enjoy the festivities on Saturday the 27th May. First a game fence was erected around the entire area. And then game was imported to make it a wildlife paradise. Birds and trees were closely and lovingly observed and recorded. (Lists available on request) Two dams were put in and eight boreholes provide an abundance of water. With the JSCB, roads were plotted and pressed all around the farm. An adventure playground was soon erected next to one of the dams and five wooded cottages went up among the syringas, sleeping up to twenty-two children comfortably. Shadreck, trained in survival in the bush, absailing and scuba diving, sent periodically to America to keep up to date with bush management, came to teach the kids. And thus we discovered the heart of the Green family. To create perfection and help children Next five luxury chalets were built hidden individually amongst the syringa trees. A main dining room, entertainments area and viewing platform graces a prominent kopje nearby overlooking one of the dams. A perfect place to observe the birds, animals and trees at dusk or first light, in peaceful solitude. The entertainments area boasts the cleanest, brightest kitchen I have ever seen and what really proves it's worth is the chef. A great guy with a sense of humour and an equally impressive history. Spending nine years at Nesbit Castle in Bulawayo, he has learnt all the tricks and specialises in wild game dishes from which the farm is self sufficient. With business in mind a fully equipped conference centre went up where groups of school children or business men can gather for a refreshingly soothing environment. Finally just to mention the rest of the buildings on the farm. A little away from everything nestles the Greens very sweet three bedroom house and separate games room in shady hide away garden, a little overgrown at the moment, but full of promise. There are two separate rooms for Shadreck and super cook. And finally somewhere on the farm, over rivers and dales, is the old farm house and stables which have been neglected over time and made us think of how much sweat and tears and love went into the building of this vibrant place. Especially for diabetes. New research in Japan shows that a chuckle helps the body process blood sugar. A study of type 2 diabetes -- the most common form of the disease -- found that laughter was linked to lower blood sugar levels after a meal. Here are some details about hyper-inflation and some infamous instances in other countries: * ARGENTINA: After decades of being a case study in ruinous inflation, Argentina returned to single-digit yearly price rises in August 1993. Just four years previously hyper-inflation was tripling prices in a month. President Carlos Menem recalled that when he took office inflation was running at around 5,000 percent a year. The austral, the currency at the time of his predecessor, had gone from being worth more than $1 to 690 per dollar. * BRAZIL: Fleeing from hyper-inflation in March 1990, Brazil's new government introduced one of history's most draconian monetary reforms and froze more than 100 billion dollars of individuals' and companies' money. Inflation had reached a record monthly rate of nearly 73 percent the month before. In July 1994 President Itamar Franco and Economy Minister Rubens Ricupero made a multibillion-dollar switch from the cruzeiro real to the dollar-backed real to drop monthly inflation from 47 percent to the low single digits. * GERMANY: Inflation is still a dirty word in Germany, where in the 1920s a wheelbarrow full of money was needed to pay for a loaf of bread. The Weimar government, saddled with a $33 billion reparation bill responded by printing money at a furious hyper-inflationary pace. In 1922, the highest denomination was 50,000 mark. By 1923, The highest value banknote issued by the Weimar government's Reichsbank had a face value of 100 billion marks. During the worst times, one U.S. dollar was equal to 80 billion marks. * YUGOSLAVIA: The economy of rump Yugoslavia, comprising Serbia and Montenegro, collapsed following the disintegration of former Yugoslavia's single market in 1991. Like many inflations, however, Yugoslavia's had its origins in a budget deficit which was covered by printing money. The country went through a period of hyper-inflation and subsequent currency reforms from 1989 to 1994. Yugoslavia suffered hyper- inflation of over one billion percent in 1993. In December 1993, the cost of living rose 2,839 times from November, and over 6,000 billion times from early in the year. On the foreign currency black market, the only one that counted in rump Yugoslavia, $1 fetched on one day 3,000 billion dinars, up from 1,100 billion the day before.
