I can almost feel myself losing weight.... by writing this down..... I've seen two shows lately that went on and on about how mid-life is a great time for women. Just last week Oprah had a whole show on how great menopause will be.... phuleeeeeeeze! I've had a few thoughts of my own and would like to share them with you. Whether you are pushing 40, 50, 60 (or maybe even just pushing your luck)you'll probably relate. Mid-life is when the growth of hair on our legs slows down. This gives us plenty of time to care for our newly acquired moustache. In mid-life women no longer have upper arms, we have wingspans. We are no longer women in sleeveless shirts, we are flying squirrels in drag. Mid-life is when you can stand naked in front of a mirror and you can see your rear without turning around. Mid-life is when you go for a mammogram and you realise that this is the only time someone will ask you to appear topless. Mid-life is when you want to grab every firm young lovely in a tube top and scream, "Listen honey, even the Roman empire fell and those will too." Mid-life brings wisdom to know that life throws us curves and we're sitting on our biggest ones. Mid-life is when you look at your-know-it-all, beeper-wearing teenager and think: "For this I have stretch marks?" In mid-life your memory starts to go. In fact the only thing we can retain is water. Mid-life means that you become more reflective...You start pondering the "big" questions. What is life? Why am I here? How much Healthy Choice ice cream can I eat before it's no longer a ! healthy choice? But mid-life also brings with it an appreciation for what is important. We realise that breasts sag, hips expand and chins double, but our loved ones make the journey worthwhile. Would any of you trade the knowledge that you have! now for the body you had way back when? Maybe our bodies simply have to expand to hold all the wisdom and love we've acquired. That's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it! Read this out to four women and you will lose two pounds. Send this to all the women you know (or ever knew), and you will lose 10 pounds. If you delete this message, you will gain 10 pounds immediately. If you find yourself in an out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly ...............this number 112 can be dialled even while the keypad is locked. Try it out. 2) Locked the keys in the car? Your car has remote keys? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, call someone at homer on your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button on your spare keys, holding it near the phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the boot). 3) Hidden Battery power Imagine your cell battery is very low, and your expecting an important call and you don't have a charger. Nokia phones come with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged again when you charge your phone next. +++++ REPORT-BACK ON SPECIAL 'BRIDGE CENTENARIAN' TRAIN TO VICTORIA FALLS Thanks to the advertisements which were aired on the Morning Mirror we achieved the number of passengers needed to run the special train to Victoria Falls on the 9th September, 2005. We had passengers from various parts of South Africa who had read about the proposed trip in the South African Sunday Times and a number from Harare as well as Bulawayo. The trip started late on Friday 9th September and we found that NRZ had added not an inconsiderable number of coaches to the original train for staff who would attend the Ceremony. We were hauled by the newly overhauled 15th Class 416 steam loco but on reaching Mpopoma a diesel was added. We reached Dete at daybreak where the steam engine was coaled and watered and we continued with the Diesel and the steam engine. At Thomson Junction we shed the diesel and had a 14A class steam loco added to the 15th class for the remainder of the trip. All was going well until we reached Matetsi where the 15th Class was due to take on water but, alas there was none and the spare water tank could not be connected to that engine. Then the problems started as the brave little 14A had to struggle with all the gradients unaided. It was about 2.30 p.m. at that stage and when passengers and crew realised how the engine was sliding in its efforts people got off to put sand and stones on the track to assist traction. It took 6 hours for us to get from Thomson Junction to Victoria Falls! On arrival we were taken by bus to Sprayview Hotel where everything was ready to receive us and passengers were soon in their rooms. After a fantastic night's sleep all were up bright and early to board the train again to be taken to the Bridge for the ceremony. We were invited by the Provincial Governor from Livingstone to go over the border so enjoyed the special meal prepared by our catering staff in our dining cars at Livingstone station. We hope that this little ceremony may have helped relations between Victoria Falls and Livingstone. We then returned to Victoria Falls where some of our passengers were booked on boat trips and others took the opportunity to see the Falls which are very low. Our South African guests were taken aback when required to pay R70 per head to see the Falls. Our train was due to depart just after the overnight but we were just an hour late. We thundered off in to the night with a diesel and the 14A working. The 15th Class was hauled dead! We made good time to Thomson Junction and then on to Gwayi Siding where we arrived at 7.30 a.m. but found we had run out of diesel! We had passengers on board who needed to be back in Bulawayo by mid-day so had to radio through for transport to take them as there was no chance of achieving that on the train. Two twin cabs were sent for them by the NRZ and the rest of us waited and viewed our surroundings, a small trading store which had 4 small tins of pilchards in chilli sauce on its shelves, and a lady who tended her vegetable garden, a lady who placed a flattened cardboard box on the ground for her two youngsters, a little group of young boys playing but precious little else and teak loaded for transportation. Eventually another diesel arrived from Dete to help us complete the journey. It must have been a very strange sight, a long train which included one dead steam loco and one dead diesel, one working steam engine and one live diesel. We had to be sure the commuter train was out of the way, which delayed us further, before completing the journey in to Bulawayo station where we arrived at about 7.30 in the evening. It was indeed a memorable trip and we can just be thankful that we arrived safely at our destination in both directions. We noticed at Sawmills a board saying the overnight had been cancelled and many passenger trains have been cancelled since through lack of fuel . The tourist train Shongololo was at Victoria Falls and the Manager was advised that he needed to source his own fuel for the return to SA. I guess we wont be seeing that train in this country for a while. Our catering staff did a sterling job even producing an extra meal when it became obvious that we were going to be very late. All passengers regarded the trip as an 'adventure' and took it in very good part. There was little we, as the Friends of the Bulawayo Railway Museum, could do about events, we were entirely in the hands of the NRZ. All in all, apart from the time keeping the trip was certainly one to remember. Hosted by Celebrity Subscription Concerts and Performing Arts Bulawayo, he will perform at the Harry Margolis Hall in Harare on Saturday October 1 (4pm) and in the Robert Sibson Hall in Bulawayo on Tuesday October 4 (7.30pm). The programme will include works from Mendelssohn (Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, Opus 36/1), Prokofiev (three movements from Romeo and Juliet and Sonata number 4 opus 29) and Chopin (Sonata number 3 in B Minor, opus 58). He was formerly known as Daniel Hill, but has assumed his mothers family name, de Borah, as there is another pianist called Daniel Hill on the active musical scene. Born in Melbourne, Mr de Borah started his musical education at the age of six with his mother, later studying at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and the St Petersburg State Conservatory in Russia. He graduated with honours from St Petersburg last year and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he is now studying as a post-graduate with Tatyana Sarkissova. Earlier this year he was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust in London. He has performed widely in Australia, Europe and Russia and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra. +++++++ One of the most successful theatrical productions ever staged in Zimbabwe is about to make a return appearance at Harares Reps Theatre, where Godspell opens this week for a fortnights run. The musical play was first staged in 1974, when it played to packed houses for five weeks and became Reps biggest box office hit. It was a record-breaker that also broke barriers, featuring black and white cast members joyously interacting on stage at a time when racial barriers were still in place. A repeat show took place in 1980 and similar success was enjoyed at that time. Now Godspell is back, directed by veteran actor Mike Lanchester and starring a cast made up of a mix of new and known talent. The play opens on Thursday (September 29) with a preview on Wednesday (September 28) and will run through to Saturday October 15. The new version features the same abundance of fun and great songs, but has a moderately updated staging and score. Mr Lanchester has assembled a crew and cast that do justice to the exuberance and style of the show, which was first staged to massive acclaim in Londons West End and New Yorks Broadway in the early 1970s and had a film version in 1973 that met with surprisingly little box office success. On stage in Reps will be known actors such as Zane E Lucas (best known for his performances in a range of productions from Over The Edge) and three graduates of recent Reps productions who are also members of Zimbabwes first boy band, 5Star: Patrick Barrett (Jesus Christ Superstar, Boy Band Blockbusters); David Bvumbe (Boy Band Blockbusters and Broadway Hits and Musical Bits) and Josh Ansley (Boy Band Blockbusters). Another young cast member, Ndakudwa Mazhude, had his stage debut in Broadway Hits and Musical Bits two months ago, while Aaron Ziwande was also in 2004s Jesus Christ Superstar.. Newcomers to Reps include Larry Ndoro, who hosted ZTVs This Life in 2003, Chiyedza Nyahuye and Chati Tinago. Musical direction is coming from seasoned performer Paul Shephard, whose recent Reps contributions included The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and Boy Band Blockbusters. He has assembled a musical ensemble that appears on stage for most of the show, providing the music for the wide number of song and dance numbers that are the core of the production. Choreography is from Jonas Sande, a member of the original Tumbuka group, while well-known Reps stalwarts like Linda Hyde, Pat Lucas and Michael Laban are involved in backstage operations. We believe this will again be a popular show and we look forward to introducing the joy and delight of Godspell to a whole new generation, said Mr Lanchester, who has directed plays at other venues but for whom this is a Reps directoral debut. He was adjudicator for the 2004 and 2005 schools drama festivals and has been an actor for more than 25 years, winning Best Actor awards at Reps in 2002 and 2004. ends ++++ ARE you going away over the Christmas / New Year Period? My apologies for the delay. The last few months have been very busy as the situation in Zimbabwe deteriorates and our Senior Citizens are finding it harder and harder. Firstly I would like to thank all those that have donated either funds or in kind to the Trust, especially The Farm House and Agri Centre in Chiredzi. Also Robert & Sheila Harrop who very kindly gave up their 70th birthday presents in lieu of cash for the fund, thank you! It is people like you that keep us going. All these donations go a long way in helping, so everyone please remember no matter what the donation it all counts! Now as to where all these donations are being utilised: 1. EMRAS Ambulance service. We have most of the Old age Homes and Centres covered now which is approximately 200 people, and have moved on to the individuals that are in private residence. At the present moment we have 32 on our individual ambulance emergency list. We have had 3 call outs in the last week alone and these call outs cost the Trust ZW$ 600 000 a call! Thank you to EMRAS and their staff for their continued support, efficiency and helpfulness. 2. BOC gases: Due to Railmed (one of the main medical aids for our Senior Citizens) not being able to refill medical oxygen bottles anymore, which are critical to many people, we have come to an agreement with BOC Gases and are now able to assist with medical oxygen. Thank you to BOC Gases. The big expense is the bottles, if anyone can assist with these it would be greatly appreciated. 3. Prescription & Non-prescription drugs: We have had a wonderful offer from Dubai for prescription drugs. Dr Jackie Stone is able to assist us with prescriptions and we have already received two prescriptions for our Senior Citizens. Thank you to Dr Stone and all the generous people in Dubai who helped make it happen. Also thank you to Fawcett Security for their offer of the overnight bag to transport the drugs from Harare to Bulawayo. We have also been in contact with the SCI blue bag project. They send non-prescription drugs with hunters travelling to Africa on safari. To all the Safari operators if you could please mention this to your clients it would be a great help. If they would like to assist they can contact Allyson at SCI on the following email address: ABarreras@safariclub.org , and she will pass a blue bag onto them which we will happily collect from the airport or from the Safari Operators office. The Trust has been given a donation of brufen and aspirin, which was desperately needed, as brufen especially, is very hard to come by and many of our Senior Citizens require it. Thank you Nula for sourcing these for us. A thank you to Datlabs for the donation off cough syrup which was a godsend during the winter months. 4. Data Base: Our data base is growing by the day and we have 279 registered so far. Not all of these require help but at least we now know of them so assistance can be given if needed. The Trust feels it is very important to record the number of Senior Citizens in Bulawayo and eventually throughout Zimbabwe so it is an ongoing exercise. Anyone needing a medical questionnaire to complete please contact either myself on 011-630204 or Doreen on 091-273103. 5. Other: Mrs Murphy was successfully sent to RSA for treatment and is now home where she will continue with her treatment, thank you to all those that assisted both financially and in kind. She sends her heartfelt thanks to you all. We have had call for assistance with glasses, two of which the Trust has been able to help source new glasses, which were gratefully received by the recipients. Thank you to the Staff of McMinn for their assistance. FUND RAISERS COMING UP TO MARK IN YOUR DIARIES! 1. African Halloween 29th October 2005 5-30 till late, cash bar available. Her name is Mrs. Margaret Anne Fox. Briefly her cancer started as a wart like growth on the side of her nose in 1999. After three unsuccessful treatments she was referred to a skin specialist who diagnosed it as cancer. She was referred to Harare for treatment, which due to the machine breaking down, took three months instead of six weeks (all this time the cancer was raging). The operation refused to heal and she was further referred to specialists in South Africa. The family managed to raise the first R75 000.00 which was required, but the red tape delayed the process for another three months. By the time Mrs. Fox arrived in South Africa the cancer was so far advanced that extensive surgery was required resulting in her losing her nose and most of her face (this is the furthest medical practitioners have gone in medical history with this type of cancer). Mrs. Fox and her family now find themselves faced with an enormous medical bill (R75 000.00) for which they have already received a final demand. This amount is dependant on Reserve Bank granting them the forex they require to change the medical aid award. There is still prosthetic and orthodontic work as well as reviews to follow and the charges for these are not included in the above figure. Mr. Fox is a pensioner and is in the process of selling his car and anything else he can think of to try and raise the difference. There is a trust fund which was established in South Africa. If there are any well wishers out there who feel they may be able to help in any way please contact us as follows:- Mr. Brian Fox Tel 09 286642 Cell 091418154 or email Mr. Fox at bfox@mweb.co.zw Any time +++++++ DOES ANYBODY HAVE A COTTAGE IN A SECURE GARDEN AND IS WILLING TO LET IT OUT TO A VERY YOUNG 62 YEAR OLD GRAN.
