FIFTY SHADES OF GREEN

HeeHoo and I have had a fifty year long disagreement over a particular shade of green. He calls it blue I call it green. There are obviously colours of blue that we do agree on, but those shades of turquoise, emerald, sea green, are very challenging. He feels he is right, (not only because he normally is), but because he is a paint and fabric colour chemist and he 'knows his colours'!! I on the other hand, tell him that my inner soul can differentiate between greens and blues!!

Colour occupies a unique place in the average person's worldview. On one hand, colour is intrinsically subjective. We all experience different emotions when we look at various colours. But on the other hand, colour is inherently tied to physics and mathematics. Every colour occupies a specific numerical wavelength apparently...

Blue is possibly the colour we see most of all around us in nature, but some scientists believe that the colour blue couldn't be seen by the earliest humans. In fact, at first, it is thought that they could only see black, white, red, and only after some time, yellow and green. In fact blue is the first colour that was synthetically made. Egyptian blue is was made 2000 years ago BC and was made by crushing and combining limestone, sand, and a mineral that contains copper.

Some suggest that the poet Homer alluded to this in his epic poem the Odyssey, with his description of the sea as being 'wine red.'

Blue affects mood, emotion and behaviour Blue is most often used in spaces where people need to rest because it makes us feel relaxed and calm.
Green of course is the next colour that we are most familiar with, but it's not even really a colour Green is only a primary colour of light and the only way to create green from scratch is to mix blue and yellow.

The first colours used by humans came from natural pigments like red ochre and yellow ochre, which were derived from iron-rich soil and clay and used in prehistoric cave paintings over 50,000 years ago. Our earliest examples of the colour red come from cave paintings which date back to 16,500 B.C.
The history of purple dates back to the bronze age. Around the 14th century BCE, the city of Tyre began producing a distinctly beautiful dye. Tyrians would create this dye from a few different shellfish found in the region. But even a small quantity of purple dye would call for thousands of shellfish to use as an ingredient.

It's said that 10,000 shellfish were needed to make even 1 gram of purple dye. At one point we have historical records showing that the dye was valued at three times its weight in gold. And pre-dyed wool was priced at about the same as its equivalent weight in gold. This means that purple dyed wool was quite literally worth its weight in gold.

Here in Zimbabwe we are so blessed with colours, our summers are vibrant in blues, greens, reds and every conceivable shade from natures palette. Walking yesterday I was mesmerised by the purple carpets that the Jacaranda trees were dropping. If the Phoenicians could do it thousands of years ago, why can't we gather these beautiful buds and make our own pigment from them

Then in Winter we flourish under the striking golds, reds, browns, tawny, mustard and ochres of the dry veld.

For centuries, European artists used a brown pigment known as 'mummy brown' or 'Egyptian brown,' made by grinding up material taken from mummified human and animal remains. Recipes varied, but some called for mummy material - including flesh, bones, wrappings, or substances scraped from inside the body - to be ground with a nut oil. The resulting warm, translucent brown was particularly useful for painting shadows, flesh tones, and glazes.

Mummies were also once sold as medicine.
Long before European artists painted with mummies, patients swallowed them. . By the 12th century, powdered mummy was being sold in Europe as a treatment for bruises, bleeding, and numerous other ailments. Demand eventually inspired counterfeiters to pass off recently deceased people as ancient mummies. Suspicions that mummy medicine could spread plague helped discredit the medicine thank goodness.

But back to my preamble, the new shirt I bought for HeeHoo, is it blue or is it green

THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. DISTRICT 9
District 9 is a South African film largely shot in Johannesburg and Soweto and begins in 1982 when a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed 'The Prawns' appears over Johannesburg. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarised ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge, but during the operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his two new 'Prawn' friends..
- Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- A memorable, monstrous fable that's consistently gripping. [New York Daily News]
- District 9 is the most exciting science fiction movie to come along in ages; definitely the most thrilling film of the summer; and quite possibly the best film I've seen all year. [The New York Observer]
- Madly original, cheekily political, altogether exciting. [Entertainment Weekly]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. HIGH SOCIETY
Cole Porter's celebrated musical High Society played a sold-out London season in the summer and is currently on a UK and Ireland tour so it seemed a good idea to show the film again, especially as it was released seventy years ago in 1956! It was Grace Kelly's final film before she retired from acting to marry Prince Rainier and features an iconic score by Cole Porter, including True Love, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Well, Did You Evah . Jazz legend Louis Armstrong also guest-stars as himself.
Set in Newport, Rhode Island, Tracy Lord, a wealthy socialite (Grace Kelly) is preparing to marry a stuffy, dull businessman. Her plans are upended when her jazz-musician ex-husband, C.K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) returns to win her back, alongside an undercover tabloid reporter (Frank Sinatra) who also falls for her.
- High Society should spell high finance business all over. It's a solid entertainment every minute of its footage. [Variety]
- After opening with a calypso tune from the inimitable Louis Armstrong, High Society really has nowhere to go but down, yet somehow director Charles Walters manages to keep this Technicolor musical sparkling through the next 100 minutes. [BBC}
- Wonderful entertainment. [The Guardian]
- High Society doesn't just have a voice - it has a heart and a soul as well [ReelViews]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 5 NOVEMBER AT 5.30 P.M. MUSEUM EXHIBITION
There's no film on Thursday 5 November as a new exhibition will be opening at the Natural History Museum that evening which many film regulars will be attending and we hope more might wish to join them!
The Arachnid Department at the Natural History Museum is one of the Museum's newer departments, having been established in 1983, twenty years after the Museum opened. With very little information previously available on these fascinating and important animals in the upstairs Invertebrate Gallery, four new display cases have been developed to introduce visitors to the remarkable diversity of arachnids found in Zimbabwe.
The displays feature scorpions, solifuges (Geri muglins), ticks, whipspiders and spiders. They also include centipedes and millipedes (tshongololos) which, although not arachnids, are important members of Zimbabwe's invertebrate fauna. The new displays aim to highlight the incredible diversity and ecological importance of these often misunderstood animals, while encouraging greater interest in Zimbabwe's rich arachnid fauna. The museum hopes the displays will inspire visitors to look more closely at the fascinating world of arachnids and other invertebrates around us.

FRIDAY 6 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. CONCERT: MUSIC BY BRAHMS
Brahms took around twenty years to complete his First Symphony (from roughly 1855 to 1876). This extreme delay was driven by his intense perfectionism and his anxiety about writing a symphony that could measure up to Beethoven's standard. As Brahms famously noted to a friend, 'You have no idea what it feels like to have such a giant marching behind you all the time.' The work was finally first performed on 4 November 1876, in Karlsruhe when it was famously hailed by Hans von Bulow as 'Beethoven's Tenth'. The symphony stands as one of the most significant orchestral masterpieces of the Romantic era and a monumental triumph over the intimidating legacy of Beethoven.
To celebrate the anniversary, it will be shown in a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein. Also in the programme will be the Variations on a Theme of Haydn and the Violin Concerto, the latter composed two years after the symphony's premiere. Gidon Kremer is the soloist and again the Vienna Philharmonic is conducted by Bernstein.
- Why watch, as well as listen to, a symphony Well, if the film direction is good, it can make you believe you are at the concert. It can highlight contributions from particular instruments. Most of all, it can clarify the conductor's approach to the music and interaction with the orchestra. Here Bernstein conducts without score, on a podium but with no music stand as a barrier between himself and the orchestra. At various times he inspires, encourages, makes stabbing gestures, blandishes, has a reverie, luxuriates, has a long sigh, leaps, pouts and dances. Also he clearly loves, and has insight to offer regarding, every bar. Was there ever a conductor who expended so much physical and emotional energy [MusicWeb International]

- This is the true Romantic Brahms filled with power, beauty, depth, and emotion. Bernstein really has delivered to us a knockout performance of the first symphony.
- Kremer displays clarity and precision of articulation with a firm grip on the massive first movement of the concerto. [Gramophone]
- This is not romantic mush but rather serene beauty; a truly wonderful piece of music... There is great forward momentum in the music and the concerto concludes with a suitably fine Finale. [Good- Music-Guide.com]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 12 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
The Eagle Has Landed was released fifty years ago in 1976, curiously enough on Christmas Day in certain countries. Oberst Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine), a German parachute unit commander has been court-martialled for trying to help a Jewish girl escape, is offered an assignment to go to England and abduct Prime Minister Winston Churchill. A small unit of German commandos drops into a quiet Norfolk village disguised as Polish soldiers to attempt the seemingly impossible assignment..
- A good old-fashioned adventure movie that is so stuffed with robust incidents and characters that you can relax and enjoy it without worrying whether it actually happened or even whether it's plausible. [The New York Times]
- Crafted with meticulous precision and infinite patience, the film unfolds like a good novel, with compelling exposition eventually giving way to thrilling action. [Film Frenzy]
- Filled with the kind of surprises and reversals which are at the nub of all good suspense stories. [Variety]
- It is hardly plausible, but it's fun to see so many acting favourites (as well as Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland, there's also Robert Duvall, Larry Hagman, Jenny Agutter, Anthony Quayle and Donald Pleasence as Himmler) among the watermills and blooms of Norfolk. [The Times, Apr 11, 2024]
- All in all, a belter of a film. [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00

National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo Lines Up Three Exhibitions and Public Engagements
By Silenkosi Moyo, Deputy Director, National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.
Art lovers in Bulawayo can look forward to a stimulating end to the year as the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo prepares to host three solo exhibitions exploring personal narratives, identity, belonging and the experiences that connect people across borders.
The exhibition programme opens on 19 November 2026 with A Mayor's Memoir, a solo exhibition by Tinotenda Marcus Mutanga. Inkaba, a solo exhibition by Torah Nkomo, follows, opening on 26 November. The programme continues into December with Always Connected, a solo exhibition by Jamie Stambolie Nelson, opening on 15 December and exploring the experiences of Zimbabweans living abroad.

The three exhibitions offer audiences opportunities to engage with different artistic perspectives and reflect on the stories, relationships and experiences that shape contemporary life.
Mutanga's A Mayor's Memoir opens the programme, inviting audiences to encounter the artist's work and consider the ideas and personal narratives the exhibition suggests. On 26 November, Nkomo presents Inkaba, a title associated with origins, roots and connection. The exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect on identity, belonging and the ties that link individuals to their communities and cultural heritage. An entry fee of $2.00 applies to attend this exhibition.

December brings a different perspective with Nelson's Always Connected. Exploring the experiences of Zimbabweans living abroad, the exhibition considers the relationship between migration, home and belonging. For many Zimbabweans living outside the country, maintaining connections with family, culture and community remains an important part of their lives. The exhibition brings these experiences into focus, opening space for conversations about distance, identity and what it means to remain connected to home.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a masterclass and a Bulawayo Conversation artist talk during the same week, extending the programme beyond the gallery walls. These engagements will provide opportunities for artists, students, emerging creatives and members of the public to interact with Nelson, exchange ideas and engage more closely with the themes and experiences informing the exhibition. Further details on the dates and times of these activities will be announced by the Gallery.

Through exhibitions and public programmes, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo continues to create opportunities for artists to share their work, develop their practice and engage with diverse audiences. The upcoming programme reflects the Gallery's commitment to presenting contemporary visual arts while encouraging meaningful conversations around culture, identity and lived experience.
Members of the public, artists, students and cultural enthusiasts are invited to visit the Gallery and take part in these upcoming events.

Bird observations in Zimbabwe by Ross G. Cooper, D.Phil. (rgcooper@hotmail.com)

It doesn't take a lot of effort to take a walk down or cycle into the veld or vlei in your local area to observe bird life. You don't necessarily have to go to Monovale Wetlands, Mukuvisi Woodlands, Mare Dam, Lake Chivero or to the National Botanical Gardens to do so. A simple yet publishable study can be conducted voluntarily by deciding on a starting and ending point in the local greenbelt or field and pencil writing down records of all birds observed. The distance would have to be substantial in order to have meaningful results, but not exhaustive. Birds are a fine example of creatures which may indicate the health of a habitat, whether it is a wetland or along the length of a tributary of a known river, the banks of a dam or the grasslands of fields, etc.

Even studies in large gardens are a great pastime. You see, I did exactly this starting from when my paternal grandfather Gordon T. Cooper encouraged me to go on walks with him in the vlei of Mabelreign, Harare to spot birds and write down their particular phenotypes, behaviours, feeding and so on. These later led to publications of articles thereon in popular peer-reviewed scientific journals. Bird spotting is a wonderful hobby. It's healthy to get out there into the outdoors. If you have a camera and binoculars, great. If not, don't worry - you can make observations by eye. Printable check lists of areas can be printed from eBird. I encourage you to take it up. If you wish to obtain a free copy of an example of a like study I completed and published, please kindly email me. Thank you. Ross.

Zimbabwe is abundant in impressive plants and geology. Try and take a walk and collect fallen seed pods or seeds from fruits picked off native trees. Also select a few rocks and stones. Dig up some soil. Take these back home and cultivate the seeds in clay pots or old plastic containers. Ensure you chop up dried grass or leaf mulch and insert it in the bases thereof. Water them often, if necessary, using used bath and dish water. After a while you'll observe germinations and if you carefully prune the resultant plant and tend it with lots of patience, you can create a magnificent bonsai. Around the edge of the pot, you may lay down the stones collected in the bush thus creating a natural artificial display that may last many years. Whether you have a garden or not, such creations are the pride and joy of many households and make excellent displays on windowsills.

Amateur botany in Zimbabwe
by
Ross G. Cooper, D.Phil., rgcooper@hotmail.com

Botany can be an interesting hobby. Take a walk through the veld or fields in your area and observe the flora. Amongst the tall, waving yellowed grass you'll observe small colourful wild flowers growing on creepers clinging to sturdy stems. Others poking through the tassels have bright orange petals. Wild aloes and their spiky stems conceal white, red or yellow flowers. Tree blossoms may include those of indigenous msasa, mopane, mutamba, mukonde, munhondo, muunga, mukwa, mutiti, marula, muzhanje, etc. or introduced species including jacaranda, flame tree or flamboyant. Pick some and press them in between sheets of newspaper weighted down with books or bricks until dry.

Create an album of dried pressed flora with notes including common and binomial names, the place of collection and date. An ordinary school exercise book will do. Of course, don't disturb protected native species like the flame lily. Take photos of your identified plants or sketch them and write penciled notes on their surrounding ecology including its state of health and/or threats it is facing. Practice makes perfect, so try and get out there, when you have some time, and become a budding environmental botanist.
