Morning Mirror Edition 1164 - 13/10/2026 www.morningmirror.africanherd.com Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home - the Edith Duly Nursing home ++++ 1) WATCH DOG Bird observations in Zimbabwe by Ross G. Cooper, D.Phil. (rgcooper@hotmail.com) It doesn't take a lot of effort to take a walk down or cycle into the veld or vlei in your local area to observe bird life. You don't necessarily have to go to Monovale Wetlands, Mukuvisi Woodlands, Mare Dam, Lake Chivero or to the National Botanical Gardens to do so. A simple yet publishable study can be conducted voluntarily by deciding on a starting and ending point in the local greenbelt or field and pencil writing down records of all birds observed. The distance would have to be substantial in order to have meaningful results, but not exhaustive. Birds are a fine example of creatures which may indicate the health of a habitat, whether it is a wetland or along the length of a tributary of a known river, the banks of a dam or the grasslands of fields, etc. Even studies in large gardens are a great pastime. You see, I did exactly this starting from when my paternal grandfather Gordon T. Cooper encouraged me to go on walks with him in the vlei of Mabelreign, Harare to spot birds and write down their particular phenotypes, behaviours, feeding and so on. These later led to publications of articles thereon in popular peer-reviewed scientific journals. Bird spotting is a wonderful hobby. It's healthy to get out there into the outdoors. If you have a camera and binoculars, great. If not, don't worry - you can make observations by eye. Printable check lists of areas can be printed from eBird. I encourage you to take it up. If you wish to obtain a free copy of an example of a like study I completed and published, please kindly email me. Thank you. Ross. ++++ 2) EDITORIAL Back in the day, when I was a famous (haha) television personality, I co-presented a weekly quiz show with either Bob Nixon or Martin Lee - (Memory notoriously bad these days!!) It was a quiz where married couples would be tested on their compatibility, and still to this day occasionally, when I brush my teeth, I remember one of the amusing questions on the show. The question was 'as a married couple, where do you squeeze The top the middle or the bottom ' (Which immediately caused a lot of mirth), but the end of the question was 'of the toothpaste tube'.... Now why it comes to mind so often, is that HeeHoo is a notorious bottom squeezer, in fact he is an indiscriminate squeezer, of the toothpaste tube, and it vexes me daily!! I spend the first part of every morning trying to flatten out the tube, and encourage, persuade, beguile, the remaining toothpaste to hustle to the top of the mangled tube, by the cap! HeeHoo eventually bought me that book by Richard Carlson, called 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff' which is a book that teaches you how to keep the little things in life from driving you crazy.. It did not help. My darling Mother, bless her heart, was a Corporal in the WAAFS and after the war there was very little money. So she learned to be frugal. A pound of Holsum could last her six months, as for the toothpaste, well in those days they had aluminium (horrors) toothpaste tubes, and they would scrape them totally flat with the back of the toothbrush, until there was not one milligram left. Some thrifty Scottish fellow even invented an appliance you could roll onto your toothpaste tube and squeeze it to death, as they say!! Now my Son-In-Law should undoubtedly be equipped to give lessons in the correct way to squeeze a toothpaste tube. A very disciplined and meticulous military man, he always buys Arm and Hammer toothpaste wherever he is in the world, and his toothpaste tube is immaculate!! (He keeps it far away from the kids and our extravagant, indiscriminate squeezing daughter!!) There should be a Support Group for wives of haphazard toothpaste tube squeezers. ++++ 3) CONDOLENCES Darrell Kleinenberg Formerly D.S.K. Bulawayo, a much valued member of the Bulawayo Community. You were more than an aunt to me-you were another mother, a pillar of love, warmth, and constant comfort. Rejoining Mom so soon leaves a space in my life that can never be filled, but I take solace in knowing you two are together again, speaking about the flowers and re arranging those flower beds " your way" Thank you for every memory, every hug, every 2 am conversation, every message never ever missed and ALWAYS REPLIED, Thabk youbfor loving me so genuinely and deeply as you did. THURSDAY 15 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE DAMNED UNITED Set in 1960s and 1970s England, The Damned United tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Clough's doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football, Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds was perceived by many to represent a new aggressive and cynical style of football - anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of what in his mind were still Don's boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Clough's belligerence and brilliance over 44 days - and reviewers noted that you didn't need to be a football fan to love it. - The Damned United is perhaps the best film ever made about football, an incisive, warm and entertaining human drama about sport, class, community and family. [Telegraph] - You don't need to know anything about British sport to find this film utterly enthralling.. and in fact, it might help if you don't know anything about it, because then you can avoid getting caught up in the authenticity (or lack thereof) of the details and let the allegorical honesty of it wash over you. [Flick Filosopher] - The Damned United is fresh and intelligent, terrifically involving all the way through. [Guardian] - The rare sports movie that deals with - indeed positively relishes - humiliation and disappointment. [The New York Times] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. VICTORIA AND ABDUL Victoria & Abdul is a semi-sequel to Her Majesty Mrs.Brown and again stars Dame Judi Dench as Queen Victoria and is again a story largely based on fact. It opens in 1887 during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee when Abdul Karim, a young clerk from Agra is chosen to travel to England to present the Queen with a ceremonial coin. Trapped in the lonely monotony of her royal duties, an amused Victoria strikes up an unexpected friendship with Abdul and, as their bond deepens, she promotes him to her Munshi (spiritual guide and teacher) to instruct her in Urdu and the Quran. Their intense, devoted alliance sparks widespread outrage and xenophobic anxiety within the royal household, including her son Bertie (the future King Edward VII) and the Prime Minister, who scheme tirelessly to destroy the relationship. - Surprising, engaging, funny and poignant, this is a delightful film - and one to savour. [Urban Cinefile] - Watching Dame Judi is a sheer delight, indeed a privilege, and she is surrounded by a cast befitting her presence. Let the nay-sayers carp as they will: I thoroughly enjoyed Victoria & Abdul. leonardmaltin.com] - There's both pointed mischief and genuine emotion in abundance as this fascinating true story emerges from the shadows of history. [Radio Times] - Judi Dench can do no wrong, and playing Queen Victoria for the second time in the richly satisfying Victoria and Abdul is an acting lesson par excellence that proves how rapturous it is to watch this great artist do everything right. [The Observer] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE SLEEPING BEAUTY This Royal Ballet production of The Sleeping Beauty with Alina Cojacaru, Marianela Nuņez and Federico Bonelli also features students of the Royal Ballet School which was founded by Dame Ninette de Valois in 1926 and is celebrating its centenary with a series of events including performances at the Royal Opera House on 8, 9 & 10 October. This performance was part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Company in 2006 and is a superb tribute to The Royal Ballet's unique style and visual splendour. - This 2006 performance and recording of the Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty has achieved a level of popular success that it could almost be described as having reached cult status. The only issue to decide is whether it deserves this level of popular support. The short answer, in my opinion, is a resounding 'Yes'! Perfection, for my taste, has been achieved here [Amazon] - Alina Cojocaru's Aurora was the ballet's radiant centrepiece, charming, in control and filled with a palpable delight in every pretty step. [Times Online] - Bonelli is a dab hand at playing princely figures and did not disappoint. I especially admired the emotional quality he brought to Act II as a lonely prince looking for love. [On Dancing] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. DISTRICT 9 District 9 is a South African film largely shot in Johannesburg and Soweto and begins in 1982 when a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed 'The Prawns' appears over Johannesburg. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarised ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge, but during the operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his two new 'Prawn' friends.. - Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic. [Rotten Tomatoes] - A memorable, monstrous fable that's consistently gripping. [New York Daily News] - District 9 is the most exciting science fiction movie to come along in ages; definitely the most thrilling film of the summer; and quite possibly the best film I've seen all year. [The New York Observer] - Madly original, cheekily political, altogether exciting. [Entertainment Weekly] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. HIGH SOCIETY Cole Porter's celebrated musical High Society played a sold-out London season in the summer and is currently on a UK and Ireland tour so it seemed a good idea to show the film again, especially as it was released seventy years ago in 1956! It was Grace Kelly's final film before she retired from acting to marry Prince Rainier and features an iconic score by Cole Porter, including True Love, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Well, Did You Evah . Jazz legend Louis Armstrong also guest-stars as himself. Set in Newport, Rhode Island, Tracy Lord, a wealthy socialite (Grace Kelly) is preparing to marry a stuffy, dull businessman. Her plans are upended when her jazz-musician ex-husband, C.K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) returns to win her back, alongside an undercover tabloid reporter (Frank Sinatra) who also falls for her. - High Society should spell high finance business all over. It's a solid entertainment every minute of its footage. [Variety] - After opening with a calypso tune from the inimitable Louis Armstrong, High Society really has nowhere to go but down, yet somehow director Charles Walters manages to keep this Technicolor musical sparkling through the next 100 minutes. [BBC} - Wonderful entertainment. [The Guardian] - High Society doesn't just have a voice - it has a heart and a soul as well [ReelViews] Admission: $3.00 NOVEMBER (provisional) Thursday 5 November No film - Museum Arachnid Exhibition Opening Friday 6 November Concert including Brahms Symphony No. 1, first performed 4/11/1876 Thursday 12 November Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone [released: 16/11/Thursday 19 November Siver Streak [released 8 December 1976] Friday 20 November Les Trocaderos Thursday 26 November Charlotte Gray [released 28 December 2001] Saturday 28 November Academy Student Concert ++++ SPIT ROASTED MEAT We can do lamb, beef, pork or anything else you like.
