We were free to roam around the car, play in the back seat and the front seats, no mandatory age for children in the front seat. Even those plastic baby seats we used in those days, without any restraints at all, could be propped up on the front seat facing forwards!! The family would set forth on holiday at Margate, in the VW Combi and the entire back area, the underneath lined with suitcases, was turned into a giant play area and bed. Not a seat belt in sight. Holiday journeys to the coast were convivial, we could play cards, hangman, I Spy and monopoly even, depending on the road surface!! Nowadays the entire family is locked down totally, unable to move a muscle. Standard instructions these days, start with the words 'Buckle Up' and 'Seatbelt Police' are appointed in the family SUV!! The poor baby is the worst off, or is it 'best off'. Some maternity hospitals will not allow the new born infant out of the building without the correct infant seat inspection. Baby seats are as important as shopping for the family sedan and incredible models are introduced every year, pink for girls, blue for boys, all marketed for the utmost safety standards and comfort. And not only that, the car seat has to be changed every few years to fit the size and weight of the infant. Babies and children world wide are totally inured to spending countless hours locked up solidly and safely. Sleeping is no problem, ergonomically designed for head and neck protection, these modern baby seats are Ferraris on demand, guaranteed to withstand hundreds of tons of force protection in case of disaster. No more romping around, standing on the back seats making faces at other motorists, it's only us Oldies who remember the excitement and freedom of a family car journey in the Old Morry, without any restraints. But thank goodness for the car seats and seat belts which have saved countless lives, ever since they were made mandatory in the eighties. ++++ 3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages Lynne Hunt My dearest sister Lynne went to join our Saviour on Friday 28th August after a battle so courageously fought. Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to my beautiful sister, an aunt of many, a mum and grandmother. It is so hard to find the words for a loss that feels so deep and so impossible to accept. Your suffering is now over and although we are left here with hearts full of sorrow and longing, I find comfort in imagining you reunited with Mum and Dad. What a beautiful homecoming that must have been - three souls together again, surrounded by love and peace. You leave behind so many precious memories, so much love, and a space in our lives that can never be filled. You were not just my sister; you were part of my heart, part of my life, and part of so many of my happiest memories. I will miss you more than words could ever say. I will miss your voice, your presence, your laughter, and simply knowing you were there . Your love will remain with us forever. You will live on in our hearts, in our memories, and in every little moment that reminds us of you. This performance was presented in St.Paul's Cathedral in 1997 as part of the celebrations of the Cathedral's 300th anniversary and conducted by the late Sir Andrew Davis. MusicWeb International wrote that 'This committed performance of Elgar's masterpiece is worthy of the music and of the noble building in which it was given.' - Davis commands a monumental and profound performance, at turns terrifying, noble, and warmly personal. His absolute mastery over the large ensemble in the rolling, reverberant acoustics of St. Paul's Cathedral is an impressive technical accomplishment.
